tv   New Day  CNN  October 24, 2016 4:00am-5:01am PDT

4:00 am
suddenly are all walkingi away. what the heck, what took you so long? kurdish forces closing in on mosul. now just five miles from the occupied city. >> it is absolutely essential that we destroy isil. >> they're booby trapping doors and windows and deadly, deadly business. >> this is "new day" with chris cuomo and alisyn camerota. the 2016 race entering the final stretch. hillary clinton and donald trump set to deliver closing arguments to voters as they storm the battleground states over the next two weeks. a new national poll. this shows clinton at this point with a double-digit lead. the trump campaign acknowledges they are behind and zeroing in on must-win florida. >> meantime, clinton intensifying her charge into red states and starting to focus on
4:01 am
her transition team 15 days from the big day, election day. we have it all covered. let's begin with jeff. good morning. >> good morning, chris. hillary clinton is heading to new hampshire today. for the third straight day she is visiting the battleground state that has a competitive. she is trying to help democrats win control of the senate. this morning we are also learning she is looking ahead and taking more steps to plan her transition into the presiden presidency. a two-week fight to the finish. it's time for closing arguments. hillary clinton striking an optimistic note. >> i want to be the president for every american. democrats, republicans, independents. people who vote for me. people who vote against me. because we've got to bring this country together. >> reporter: donald trump less so. >> are we glad that i started? are we having -- i'll let you
4:02 am
know on the evening of november 8th whether i'm glad. >> reporter: with 15 days to go, trump no longer talking about when he wins but if. >> if we win on november 8th, we are going to fix our rigged system. it's a rigged, broken, corrupt system. >> some people are sore losers and, you know, we just, we just have to keep going. >> reporter: a wild weekend with trump visiting gettysburg for an unusual gettysburg address. overshadowing the plan for his first 100 days in office by pledging to sue the women accusing him of inappropriate behavior. >> every woman lied when they came forward to hurt my campaign. total fabrication. all of these liars will be sued after the election is over. >> reporter: trump campaign manager kellyanne conway bluntly acknowledging the uphill climb. >> we were behind one, three, four points in the swing states. our advantage is that donald
4:03 am
trump will continue to take the case directly to the people. >> reporter: trump undermining that acknowledgment. >> investors business daily, the most accurate poll from the last election and the two elections before that, just announced that we are leading nationally by two points. numbers are looking phenomenal in florida. don't believe the media. >> reporter: but a new abc news national poll shows trump trailing clinton by 12 points. meantime, cnn has learned that clinton is moving beyond trump and turning her attention towards her transition to the presidency. a democrat close to clinton saying she's not being arrogant, she's being diligent. clinton is sizing up candidates for white house chief of staff. one top conattetender, ron klai all this obama visiting nevada, one of the battlegrounds.
4:04 am
>> you are not for him, you're kind of for him. what the heck. >> reporter: continuing a three-day swing through florida today. fighting for the 29 electoral votes he needs to stay viable. clinton is heading there tomorrow in hopes of blocking that path. she's also multi-tasking and increasingly planning her transition. i'm also told she already started reaching out to old allies on capitol hill, including republicans whose help she will need if she wins. her team talk about any of this publicly with one adviser telling me, first, she has to win. >> good point. that is a very excellent point, jeff. thank you very much for all of that. let's discuss it with our cnn political commentators. van jones and jeffrey lord a trump supporter. gentlemen, good to see you both this morning. >> good morning. >> jeffrey, let me start with you with your energy that abounds there. both candidates are making their closing arguments as you heard jeff say and donald trump the
4:05 am
system is rigged against the little guy and i'm going to drain the swamp of corruption in washington. do you think that that message is what will help him close the gap in the next two weeks? >> it's a great message. that is the problem here. i mean, this is why donald trump is the nominee of the republican party in the first place. this, i think, was part of the energy behind the bernie sanders campaign. a lot of americans that feel very differently that the entire system is rigged to the benefit of a group of ruling class elites of both parties, i might add. donald trump is carrying that message. absolutely. >> so, jeffrey, just quickly, you think that will be enough for him to close the gap and win? >> well, he should tie it all in together. i mean, trade and illegal immigration and work through these issues that he's been discussing for months and months and months. tie it altogether and make that the closing argument, yes. >> van, what is hillary clinton's closing argument in a
4:06 am
sentence or two over the next two weeks of why she should be elected. what is different? how will the country change under her? >> i want to say about what mr. lord just said, that is a good message, but you don't have a good messenger. and the problem that you've got going forward now is that people have made up their mind about both candidates. people say both candidates are very flawed. but they think that you have one who's flawed and one that is unfit to govern. unfit to be president. so, what hillary clinton is going to be doing going forward is basically trying to continue to point out that she does have actual plans and policies that will make things better. frankly, most voters don't listen to all that stuff. they both give long speeches. what you get are just these little snippets. for instance, donald trump gave a great speech in gettysburg over the weekend. it was substantive and it was clear. i didn't agree with it. but it was meaty and it was there and then throws this line suing women and that's all we talk about. we have a messenger who
4:07 am
continues to step on his own message. i'm so glad, frankly, that donald trump keeps doing stuff. had that speech been heard, he might have picked up three or four points. >> i bet you're glad that he keeps stepping on his message. because hillary clinton's message is that the other guy is unfit. you're saying then that that is enough. >> where we are now give on the fact that donald trump has managed to slip on every banana peel and every stairway all summer and all fall. luckily she does have really good policies and really good ideas but, frankly, nobody is listening to that any more. donald trump has made himself and he has gone from trumpzilla to trump -- >> this is anecdotal to be sure. saturday i took a break from cnn
4:08 am
and plopped my mother in the car and drove out to the countryside to get a pumpkin for halloween. i can only tell you, this place is littered with trump signs. everywhere i looked. i saw exactly one hillary clinton sign. you know, i'm seeing these polls as we all are but i'm telling you here on the ground, the trump stuff is everywhere. absolutely everywhere. and there was almost no evidence of a hillary clinton campaign visually. >> jeffrey, you're not wrong. i see it, too. i see it, i hear it. the polls don't sort of match the enthusiasm that people have for donald trump. jeffrey, are you saying that you think all the polls are wrong and that, in fact, donald trump still has a real fighting chance and will win? >> oh, i think he deuz have a real fighting chance. i am saying i'm leery of these polls because when you add to what i'm just saying his crowds when he comes here and when he goes anywhere he fills these arenas and thousands more people
4:09 am
outside trying to get in. that's just not the case in her situation. so, i am -- >> there is a reason for that. >> i am leery of these polls. >> there is a reason for that. hillary clinton is not an electric speaker. she's not an electric performer. people will be very, very happy to go vote for her wouldn't necessarily want to go hear her talk. on the other hand, donald trump is an electric speaker and electric performer. people will be excited to go hear him talk and vote for him. basically, you have to understand, a lot of people that are very enthusiastic to go vote for hillary clinton that wouldn't even watch her give a speech on tv because she's just not that kind of performer. >> then how confident are you? on a scale of one to ten, do you think it's too early to already be talking about the hillary clinton transition team that she is trying to assemble or do you think that polls have been wrong before? >> listen, this is not the year to trust the polls. this is not -- listen, you saw with brexit.
4:10 am
the polls were, you know, before, during and after people were against brexit in the uk. but the reality is, even though the opinioning is correct the turnout was totally wrong. the same kind of setting in. real passion on the part for people for brexit and outperformed folks on election day. there is no reason to have complacency. the operation of the clinton machine kicking in and getting those early votes in has been a long stronger. but, now, listen, anything can happen this year. you cannot be arrogant. i will tell you right now if you are up double digits and you aren't making preparations, that is irresponsible. you have to make the preparations but can't the signal it is over because truman was down, too. >> 15 days is actually a long time in this election cycle. quickly, jeffrey, yeah. >> i had the chance to meet of
4:11 am
brexit fame and they were down by 10 and up by 4 and -- >> cautionary b rerexit tale th everybody should be listening to. investigating what caused a deadly tour bus crash. 13 killed and dozens injured. the bus slammed into a big rig as it was returning to a casino. we have paul live. what do you know? >> i'm here at the desert regional medical center where four patients remain in critical condition and another in serious. as you said, this happened when the bus crashed into the back of a big rig. it pierced through or slammed, slammed some 15 feet into that big rig and that's what caused these deadly, deadly 13 fatalities and all of these other injuries that doctors are describing many of them as facial lacerations.
4:12 am
a veteran highway patrol officer saying in 35 years he had never seen a bus crash like this that had killed 13. among other things they're going to have look into. driver fatigue. was that a possibility as this happened in the predawn blackness on the return trip from the casino. also, one thing that they are going to definitely check out is the notion that this bus was going much faster than the big rig and that the driver did not apply his brakes. reporting live from palm springs, i'm paul vercammen. >> oh, paul, what a tragedy that whole story is. thank you for the reporting. well, american airlines is issuing an apology after two passengers gained unauthorized access on a philadelphia to boston flight sunday. officials say they boarded the plane through an unlocked jetway door. the entry appears to be an accident. the airline does not suspect foul play. the flight was delayed nearly three hours as americans switched aircraft because of an abundance of caution.
4:13 am
a pentagon effort to recover millions in signing bonuses given to u.s. soldiers is facing major backlash. here's what the military says. thousands of national guard members who reinsisted a decade ago were improperly given cash bonuses. now, the government wants that money back with interest. many of those soldiers are speaking out in the next hour of "new day" we'll talk to an iraq war veteran who said he had to refinance his home to settle his so-called debt. >> i look forward to talking to him. he says it was just so stressful when he, when they claimed that he didn't get that bonus after he had bought his house, had a student loan. >> why they're saying it and why this happened and what the remedy is are all very interesting and important details that may not get addressed by the congress and then the men and women are really in a bad place. >> you'll hear his personal story coming up. democrats getting fired up over the prospect of a clean sweep on election day. could both chambers of congress turn blue? the major races that are in

hillary clinton and president obama looking down ballot blasting vulnerable republicans in tough c congressional races. >> i hope you will do everything you can to elect katie mcginty your next senator. she will help us break through the gridlock. when you look at his opponent, he still refuses to stand up to donald trump. >> now, when suddenly it's not working and this guy is out of line, suddenly that is a deal breaker. what took you so long? what the heck? what took you so long? so the party's biggest names are talking about donald trump every chance they get in order to give their colleagues an edge.
4:19 am
why am i laughing? this is very serious business. i'll tell you why with mark preston because we're going to take you behind the scenes here of what's happening with the magic wall. we hit the button and it was all these discussions about like european parliamentary elections -- >> which you are an expert of. >> we weren't even identifying the countries right. is that spain or portugal. there is a yegz i waquestion, s on these tables and projections. i have been bitten by them in the past. you do not have a big enthusiasm drive with hillary clinton. you see trump's crowds. i get that they don't size up as a macro to the overall size of population of viewers. why the numbers that the numbers will be better?
4:20 am
>> let's look at the base. he hasn't built supporters. he hasn't put money into the individual states to get phone banks and people knocking on doors. the rnc has done the best that it can do. but donald trump ran the campaign based on his own persona. we saw that during the primary. when you get to a general election, you need to invest money into the states. >> you think it's inf infrastructure. >> it absolutely comes down to inf infrastructure. >> overenthusiasm. >> overenthusiasm only gets you so far. you might be supportive of donald trump, but what, you know, does that mean that you're going to get up at 6:00 a.m. on tuesday morning and go to vote or early voting in florida. are you going to decide, i'm going to go vote. >> let's look at the balance of power. we're going to talk house and senate right now. right now in the house i believe put up a graphic if you have it about the balance of power.
4:21 am
1 6/246. in the house, the democrats need 30 seats. is there an argument that they're going to get it? >> unlikely to happen. unlikely to happen. but you could see democrats pick up somewhere between 20 and 25 seats, which is a huge improvement from where they have been. republicans would still control the chamber by five points and that's enough for them to control the chamber. it could weaken paul ryan who is, of course, going to run for speaker, again. we expect he will run for speaker, again. it could weaken him where he is drawn to the more conservative side of his caucus which could be bad for him. >> doesn't change any of the chairmanships or the committees. the way the wheels turn will stay the same. >> absolutely. >> on the senate side, let's take a look at what we have there. >> there it is. >> tv is back. 54/44. there's been all this talk about how trump can affect down ballot. when i was looking at these races to get ready for this, a lot of these republicans seem solid to me.
4:22 am
>> 54 actually 46. two of these independents actually are with democrats. democrats would need, let's assume, on the assumption hillary clinton wins. that means all they would need is a net gain of four to control the chamber. that would get them to 50/50 and tim kaine who is the vice president is really the senate of the president. he would be the deciding vote. however, however is that with tim kaine leaving, that means they're going to have to appoint somebody to his seat and then have a special election and, quite frankly, in 2017, republicans could maybe win back the chamber in 2017. but your point there are some folks such as marco rubio in florida who is looking at split ticketing and probably will win. >> these independents you have king up there in maine and bernie sanders. we're picking them. so, when you look at this race, you see this as a key race. you don't think that the incumbent has it? >> she has been struggling. she has been struggling because she has been embracing donald trump and pushing away. the problem with pushing donald trump away, you're pushing his
4:23 am
supporters away which is really the baseline she needs to build upon. right now you have a fairly popular governor right now in new hampshire. she's struggling right now. >> illinois. >> race is gone at this point. barack obama's home state. she has enough right now in the polls. i mean, this has been basically written off by both parties. >> you see this as one sure lock but you need by your math at least three more. what do you see in here? >> russ fin gp gold came back and he has the advantage. >> pennsylvania? >> now, this is a split ticket situation where you have katie mcginty and patrick toomey has done a good job working and building the intfrinfrastructur. even though trump is losing in the state of pennsylvania, this race is very tight. if hillary clinton could drag katie mcginty across the finish line.
4:24 am
>> witness what is going on in florida. rubio basically had to be bid to run again there. what does it mean? >> he could raise a lot of money and a high name i.d. down, you know, in this past year. rubio is a good candidate and, you know, looks -- right now looks like he is going to win. if there was a huge wave, he could get swamped out. >> that takes us back to where we started. turnout. will there be a wave or very tight? you could see different outcomes. >> no doubt. >> mark preston, thank you very much. looking forward to talking to you about austria and we didn't get to do it today. >> technology, how we love it. hillary clinton gaining in the polls with just two weeks until election day. but donald trump says he's winning. members of congress who support each make their case, next. winning shot. that was it for me. that's why i'm quitting with nicorette. only nicorette mini has a patented fast dissolving formula. it starts to relieve sudden

>> i've got news for all the people taking advantage of our rigged system. in 17 days, everything is going

to change. >> he refused to say that he would respect the results of this election and that is a threat to democracy. just two weeks left until election day. hillary clinton and donald trump. time for them to make closing arguments. the good news is, it will finally be about you. the latest national poll shows clinton with the lead, but there's time to turn around. a lot of questions about turnout. let's get into the case for you from each. democratic congressman steve israel joins us, a clinton supporter and republican congresswoman marsha blackburn endorsed trump. let's start with quick 30 seconds. the closing argument for trump. what you think the case is. we'll start with you, congressman blackburn. to the american people. here is his case. >> his case is let's make certain we have constitutional juris on the supreme bench and
4:30 am
replace obama care and we protect our nation's economy and get it humming, again. wage stagnation and low economic growth is something that is stifling every single corner of this country. let's bring economic prosperity all across this country into our rural areas and into underserved areas. >> congressman israel, what is hillary clinton's case? >> two things. number one, you've seen donald trump as a candidate, is this the man you want to be your president? let's elect a house and a senate that will pass a bill to finance infrastructure and end secret money in politics and pass comprehensive immigration reform and unite the country. >> what is the specific case to be made to these following two poll categories, congressman blackburn. we have women here first. 20 points. trump had been trying to break into that.
4:31 am
hasn't. if anything it's gone upilatal b bit. what is the case for women? >> national security and economic security are the top two issues for women and top two issues in the poll this year. that's where trump needs to put his emphasis. how do you make this country safe, again? how do you get a handle on what is happening with is siis. making sure we are funding our military. i have a large military post in my district and they are very concerned about the lack of accountability from hillary clinton on the e-mails. if their spouse mishandled one e-mail on a mobile device, they're really unhappy with that. >> how do you respond with that and why do you believe hillary clinton is ahead with women? >> chris, i just returned from asia visiting our brave men and women throughout asia. i'll tell you, you don't support the military by calling the military a disaster, which donald trump did. you don't have a plan to defeat isis by saying that you're
4:32 am
smarting than the generals. i agree with marsha and respect marsha that national security is an important issue not just with women, but across the board. you need a president who is ready to lead and has the experience to do so. donald trump is not the person. >> the white vote. let's put up the numbers on that. mitt romney had a much bigger portion of this population than donald trump does right now. congressman blackburn, what do you think this group is feeling differently right now and what would you like to say to change their minds? >> i think so many people are just undecided. we have deeply flawed individuals at the top of each ticket and they're waiting to see some of the proposals that are going to come forward on economic security. on how we're going to handle securing the southern border. and make certain that we end illegal entry, whether it is human trafficking, sex trafficking, drug trafficking. they also want to make certain that the opiod issue is dealt with. >> this is part of hillary
4:33 am
clinton's reaching out to this mythical group in polling called the college educated white voter. what is that outreach, in your opinion? >> well, look, she is reaching out not just to college educated white voters but voters who don't have a college education. you know, i don't think that you have one issue that is defined for one segment of voters. there are an abundance of issues. here are the priorities that voters have. number one, jobs and paychecks. let's build infrastructure and put people back to work. number two, national security. hillary clinton has a plan. donald trump does not. number three, comprehensive immigration reform. time to protect our borders and also create a path for people who are contributing to our economy. finally, and once for all, end that secret money in politics that is driving people crazy. they believe they are priced out of democracy. one party in washington is willing to pass the disclose act to require transparency. that's the democrats.
4:34 am
marsha's party has stopped that bill from passing. they continue to allow dark murny into politics. >> let's quickly deal with the negatives for both with each of you now. i'll start with you, congressman israel. your candidate the negative would be, she's not the person to deal with money in the process. she loves money in the process. she gets more money than anybody else. to the extent that these issues require trust of a candidate, her numbers speak for themselves whether it's the e-mail scandal or other things that have been attached to her. she cannot be trusted. your case. >> look, she's the only candidate of the two that supports the disclose act who wants to end secret and dark money in politics who has a plan to do so. donald trump does not. i think this election really comes down to who is fit to lead. who is fit to be president. donald trump, across every issue and almost every day has established he's not ready to lead. he is temperamentally unfit. people make their decisions on president on that.
4:35 am
>> obviously, the criticism for you is something that we see play out every day. donald trump has said the worst things about so many groups of people that we've seen in the moderate electorakctorate area. you have never said any of the things that donald trump has said. >> nor would i. >> yet, you're backing him for president. how do you explain to people that negative that even though you would never say the things the things that this man says. >> you are looking at the future of our country. hillary clinton has called basket of deplorables. so many americans she has put in that basket of deplorables. she and barack obama has made a mess of what's going on in the middle east. the iran deal is not serving us well. you can look at the red line in syria, which wasn't a red line. the message is there. what happened in benghazi and libya and the fact that she lied to those families and has not gone back to rectify that situation. the clinton foundation.
4:36 am
using that as a way to pull money from countries. look at what has just come out about morocco and what the situation that was there with contributions to the clinton foundation. people know that they cannot trust hillary clinton to come forward and to be truthful about what is going on. what they have seen from donald trump in his speech this weekend spoke to it beautifully. a plan for how to move forward. the things these in the first 100 days. national security and to work for child care and allow some tax credits that are there. people are ready to see this country turn a corner. they want to get us back on a path to prosperity. at this point, chris, we're not there. when it comes to dark money, there's an article in "the wall street journal" today more billionaires gave to hillary clinton and have put millions of dollars into her campaign.
4:37 am
>> so, for your side it's going to come down to the message versus the messenger and for the democrats -- >> if you want the status quo, you're for clinton. >> we'll see. appreciate you both making the case. compelling as always. alisyn? iraqi led forces closing in on mosul and trying to push out isis. what is the status of the battle? we'll take you live to the front lines, next. n, less than 30 min. because if they aren't going to eat it, at least you didn't spend too much time making it. campbell's one dish recipes. made for real, real life. fight heartburn fast. with tums chewy delights. the mouthwatering soft chew that goes to work in seconds to conquer heartburn fast. tum tum tum tum. chewy delights. only from tums.

>> > kurdish peshmerga forces within five miles of mosul, iraq. a coalition of 100,000 troops
4:41 am
are trying to free the city from isis control. this weekend defense secretary ash carter flew to iraq to assess the battle. >> nothing that i take more seriously than putting americans in arm's way. make no mistake whether they're flying airplanes overhead or advising units on the ground, even behind the front lines, they are at risk. it's also important that everybody understands that we must do this. >> let's bring in cnn pentagon correspondent barbara starr and cnn international anchor and correspondent michael holmes who is near mosul. michael, let me start with you. what is the situation in and around mosul this morning? >> yeah, as you know, alisyn, the iraqis and the kurdish peshmerga are trying to encircle mosul before they can think about going in. you mention how close they are the most forward position is
4:42 am
about seven or eight miles. that's the peshmerga in the north. making progress, too, from the south, the southeast. but not so much from the west. we're just outside bashiqa where they mounted an operation yesterday and came in on two fronts and surrounded this very strategically important area. the town and eight different villages. 100 square kilometers and it was interesting we could hear small arms fire and rockets going in and then it was quiet. now, what we've been told is that they have been encountering those suicide car and truck bombs that have been such a problem. 130 of them have been destroyed during this campaign so far. they're also up against snipers. all have been quiet for a few hours and in the last hour or so a lot of mortars and a lot of rockets and also aircraft in the air over bashiqa. targets are being acquired and taken out so the peshmerga can
4:43 am
move in. that goes to the whole point of trying to encircle where they have not encircled and we're hearing that isis family members and isis fighters and even isis leaders have been leaving mosul and heading for syria. we're hearing that from a senior sunni tribal leader. they're getting out license control territory towards syria. >> so, barbara, what is the assessment from the pentagon on ohow this is going? >> well, right now they feel these iraqi and peshmerga forces are pretty much on schedule, on target. this is what was anticipated that they would approach mosul from the north and southeast. what michael is pointing out is very key, of course, because it is to the west of mosul that isis still controls territory. and they have known for several days that isis operatives and isis leaders in the area would try to get out of the city and move west and fry to get across the border in syria.
4:44 am
but essential to keep after mosul. this is the place the u.s. very much wants to boot isis out of and really destroy that perception even that there is an isis caliphate. >> barbara, one more before i turn back to michael. daonald trump tweeted about thi battle going on. he said the attack on mosul is turning out to be a total disaster. we gave them months of notice. the u.s. is looking so dumb. vote trump and win, again.comme this? >> no, don't expect them to. ash carter is adamant that no one will comment on the presidential election for either candidate. mr. trump has been very vocal that he believes the goods have been given away by announcing that the mosul campaign would be under way. that is something that the iraqis very much wanted. they wanted their people and their military to know that they and the world were going after isis. it was not a big secret. the feeling is, look at that air
4:45 am

trump credit his optimism in terms of the polls? let me show you the latest abc news poll that came out yesterday. it shows hillary clinton with a double digit lead. she has 50% to his 38%. so when he says we're winning hugely with the polls, what's he talking about? >> the survey is real little insightful because alisyn the last time they ran this analysis, she was up by four. now the lead has grown to twelve. if you look at the issues that have dominated the last week or ten days, all of them are backfiring against him. in other words, he's facing a triple threat. his response to his accusers, 69% disagree with how he's responded to the entire question of treatment versus women. his refusal to accept the outcome is also costing him, and his charges that this is a rigged election are also problematic with voters. well those really have been the predominant matters that we've discussed in the last week or ten days. so, it's not been a good time period for donald trump.
