there's gotta be a better way to find the right card. creditcards.com lets you compare hundreds of cards to find the one that's right for you. just search, compare, and apply at creditcards.com. here in new york a scary aviation accident involving governor mike pence. his plane skidding off the runway at laguardia's airport. it was a woeg 737 and ended up short of a high to the south of the field. the concrete bed slowed down, stopped the plane. we got an air traffic control audio of the incident. it begins as the plane is cleared to land with fairly significant winds blowing across the runway. >> confirm 34 prepared to lapped. >> assistance to land. >> good landing.
6:01 pm
>> stop, stop eastern. we have an issue on the airport. we have an emergency in the airport. go around. climb it,000. 3452 we're sending help for you. >> an issue as she said. thankfully no one on board was hurt. the plane is still there and an investigation now just beginning. you see the wheels there looked like they've actually collapsed, just moments ago, governor pence tweeted "so thankful everyone on our plane is safe. grateful for our first responders and the concern of prayers of so many. back on the trail tomorrow." liz sanders and miles o'brien and david soucy. liz, run through what you saw, heard and felt. >> sure, so we knew that we were going to be coming into bad whe
6:02 pm
builder in laguardia tonight, had an hour-long ground hold in iowa where the governor was campaigning earlier today this afternoon and when we were deaccepteding into laguardia, it was turbulent, very cloudy, cut he see very much out the windows and when we landed it was a pretty hard landing we experienced and then the runway continued or excuse me the plane continued down the runway for probably 20 or 30 seconds and you could feel the plane skidding, you could feel the back of the plane, too, which is where the press is, felt like it was fishtailing and moving side to side, and then the plane came to a very pretty sharp halt on the runway, and secret service immediately popped up, and said that one of them went forward to
6:03 pm
the cockpit, i assume spoke with the pilot. said the plane was intact and there was no damage to the plane but there was a rescue crew coming. at that point governor pence came to the back of the plane to check with the press, asking is everybody is okay. he said he and his family were fine. he remarked there was some dirt and mud on his window at the front of the plane. at that point it seemed like we were off the runway and by the time we got off the airplane, we could tell the plane had skidded off the runway and into the grass >> it looked like, i mean some of the concrete on the runway was torn up. could you feel wheels grinding onto the runway? >> it felt like the plane was skidding and it felt like the brakes were being slammed on and they weren't working. we were moving down the runway much more quickly than a plane should be going if it's landing.
6:04 pm
>> right. miles o'brien is joining us. you gave us a description last hour of the runway at laguardia, how difficult it is not a lot of feet on that runway and also what the surface is actually kind of designed to do. >> it's a anniversarity runway. anybody learning a 737 has to consider themselves an aircraft pilot. the material that you see there on your screen that's broken apart is designed to do just that, it breaks under the weight of the aircraft to keep it from going off into more serious trouble. if what i've learned is that they were landing on runway 2- which explains the pictures. we were trying to figure out why we were seeing traffic. that's the grand central parkway. they were landing to the
6:05 pm
southwest. we had a significant tailwind component. the aircraft relative to the ground would be going faster than normal. so you've got a really bad combination of things happening here. lot of water on the runway, the breaking action is not what you would hope it to be and you've got an aircraft that's travel faster than it would normally be under ideal circumstance. most aircraft ideally land into the wind allowing it to be relative to the ground slower. if they're landing with a tailwind in this situation it isn't too much of a surprise. >> david soucy you've seen a lot of incidents like this. what stands out to you? >> well, what really bothers me is they were on the downwind leg, information that both miles and i got after the first talk about this and it bothers me they were flying downwind and as miles said you're trying to fly
6:06 pm
into the wind which gives you that relative speed to the ground advantage and if you're flying down with the wind it's not a good situation particularly in the rainy runway, you're talking about a high speed landing compared to if you're flying into the wind. braking action is impaired to some degree which would increase the probability you'd be in a hydroplane situation where the aircraft wouldn't have that control or that direct contact with the runway and would slide around as was described earlier when the back of the airplane was sliding around left to right, leftd to right as the thrust reversers are pushing back. almost like tried to throw you back the other way to combat that. this pilot had a lot on his hands to land the aircraft. >> his landers sent us a picture
6:07 pm
i haven't seen yet. miles, if you could, that just looks all torn up, explain what we're seeing there, miles. >> i'm waiting for the delay on my cable. >> that would help. >> what i am seeing, though, is that is that easterly designed to allow a typical truck or people or whatever to walk over on a normal day. the weight of an aircraft will sink right through and arrest the forward motion. it's a life saving idea. >> that's supposed to happen. >> only implemented in recent years. >> it's supposed to happen after an incident like this. >> exactly, this means it worked. we should be happy it worked and we should be glad the faa, david will attest to this, we say often it's a sad statement but the rules are written in blood, and when it comes to aviation we have accidents, we have overrun,
6:08 pm
we have problems and the faa and the regulatory body spopds. that's what makes it so safe. you listen to what happens from the previous accidents and you don't end up with situations like we had in the mid '90s, u.s. airways went off the edge of the runway in similar circumstance. >> does the plane skimping intole that? that what slows the plane down timely in. >> that's exactly, it breaks away. >> i didn't know that happened. >> it's enough to hold a truck but not enough to hold a 737 which is what you want and underneath there is just, you know, for all intents and purposes quick sand. >> and mary schiavo, former inspector general of the u.s. department of transportation, you work as an attorney and families of transportation accidents what are the main
6:09 pm
questions trying to, everyone's trying to figure out right now? >> actually there will be a lot more questions than meets the eye because there have been many accidents like this in the past and as miles said, the previous accidents are why we have the arrester beds. good to think of them as boxes of concrete with sand inside. they'll look at the spoiler systems and the auto braking on the plane. this is a 737 700. they are pretty new the first ones flew in 19 the 8, see if the toe brakes and thrusters work. there's a lot of equipment on the plane the ntsb will want to look at in addition to the runway. the condition was listed as good, grooved, it has the arester beds. so they avoided the zaeser in chica disaster in chicago a few years back. this plane is not going to see
6:10 pm
service any time soon. they have to see the equipment on the plane which could have malfunked. >> unless anyone think the campaign for donald trump or the governor is on hold, donald trump has been in ohio tonight, he called governor pence right after this incident, he expressed relief that everybody on board was okay but there he is speaking at a rally in geneva, ohio. you can't stop this close to an election given nobody was injured on board in this incident and governor pence canceled a fund-raising event in new york tonight, which is the reason he was here. >> full schedule tomorrow, a new plane they're getting and he's going to pennsylvania and north carolina tomorrow. might disrupt a brief fund-raiser tonight in new york and that's about it. >> donald trump in a tight schedule right now. >> three stops today in ohio and he is not letting up. we'll see him in new hampshire and maine. he's packing a ton of campaign activity into each day now.
6:11 pm
>> miles o'brien, david sus i-liz sanders and mary schiavo, glad you and everybody in the press corps and the gmpbt's pham, i will the secret service, everybody aboard the aircraft all the personnel are okay, no injuries reported. lot more to talk about in the hour ahead. donald trump barnstorming through ohio seeking a crucial victory there attacking clinton clinton talking about the latest batch of stolen emails and also tonight michelle obama and hillary clinton the first time together on the campaign trail. how the two are making history and democrats trying to hope to close the deal on this election. dayquil liquid gels doesn't treat a runny nose. it doesn't? alka-seltzer plus cold and cough liquid gels fight your worst cold symptoms including your runny nose. oh, what a relief it is! enjoy your phone! you too. it's been a busy day and busy night. they've just opened one of two runways at laguardia airport after mike pence's plane skidded off the other. donald trump finished speaking at ohio, expressed his gratitude. new polling shows the race between him and hillary clinton
6:15 pm
is tightening in key states. florida and nevada leaning her way are tipping back toward him. other polling showing the possibility she could turn some red states blue. lawmakers who condemned trump said they will be voting for him after all. jason chaffetz said he could not support donald trump at the ballot box. that was then, this is now. now he's a trump voter he says and how does that happen exactly? we'll have the story just ahead. donald trump in one key state that's close indeed. more from sarah murray. >> in 12 days we're going to win ohio and we're going to win back the white house. >> reporter: donald trump is barnstorming the buckeye state with one target in mind. >> i've been doing six, seven, eight things a day every single day. she's home sleeping half the time. i say she's definitely a low
6:16 pm
energy person. >> reporter: seizing on latest revolutions from hacked emails released by wikileaks outlining how bill clinton generated personal income through clinton foundation contacts. >> if the clintons were willing to play this fast and loose with their enterprise, when they weren't in the white house, just imagine what they'll do, given the chance, to once again control the oval office. >> reporter: the gop nominee hoping a last ditch effort to stay on message and jam pack his campaign schedule might be enough to clinch a victory come november but even if he accused hillary clinton of being dangerous on foreign policy -- >> hillary wants to start a shooting war in syria, a conflict with a nuclear power, russian, which could very well lead to world war iii. >> reporter: he again appeared to come to putin's defense. >> she speaks very bad of putin
6:17 pm
and i don't think that's shart. >> reporter: he no longer wants to focus on the lawsuits he's threatened against women who accused him of sexual unwanted advances. >> i hate that you waste time when we're talking about isis and jobs and you're still bringing that up. >> that was just saturday. >> reporter: trump lobbing sharp attacks at a "people" magazine reporter who alleged he pushed her against a wall and kissed her without consent. >> she was afraid, give me a break? she would have gotten the pulitzer prize. >> reporter: trump making a rare appearance with wife melania. she's more focused than raising barron than hitting the campaign trail. >> my priorities are on our son barron and i support him 100% and i'm there for him every time he needs me and i will join him. >> her husband has other ideas. >> she's an amazing public speaker so she's agreed to do
6:18 pm
two or three speeches and i think it will be big speeches, important speeches. >> reporter: with less than two weeks until election day republicans are still grappling with how to deal with their nominee. after pulling his endorsement of trump weeks ago -- >> i can only answer to myself and my wife and i got to feel good about what i do. >> reporter: utah congressman jason chaffetz says he'll vote for trump after all tweeting "i will not defend or endorse donald trump but i am voting for him. hrc is that bad." >> did trump make any mention of his running mate tonight? >> he did mention at the end of the speech he told this ohio crowd he spoke to mike pence and explained that his running mate's plane skidded off the runway. he assured the crowd everything is fine and of course that's
6:19 pm
what we're hearing from our produce are elizabeth landers and mike pence lk back will be back on the campaign trail tomorrow. the senior campaign manager saying nothing can slow down the ticket in the last week or so. >> thank you so much. hillary clinton and michelle obama campaigned together for the first time in north carolina. mrs. owe baja has opinion logging a lot of time stumping for clinton, solo appearances and joining her today she's broken new ground. more on what it means to the clinton campaign especially what it says to clinton supporters. randi kaye was in winston-salem talking to voters. >> you guys are pretty fired up, right? i like that. >> reporter: first lady michelle obama sharing a stage with hillary clinton for the first time, a double dose of
6:20 pm
democratic women thrilled supports. how important is it to you that michelle obama is supporting hillary clinton and campaigning with her in terms of your support? >> i still would support hillary without semithey will that's an a big bonus for hillary. michelle is the classiest presidential wife we've ever had. >> she creates a lot of enthusiasm. i think she brings vitality. lots of the things that i think people are not necessarily seeing in hillary even though they believe in her message. >> hill ray has done her job. now, we need to do our job. and get her elected president of the united states. >> mrs. obama's fans believe she is uniquely qualified to pull all kinds of voters into clinton's camp, voters like sarah ma redmond a 20-year-old millenial and former bernie sanders supporter who admires
6:21 pm
mshl mrnl. >> show shows black girl imaginic and shows our point of view and a good empowerment icoico icon. >> she speaks toi issues and sot of speaks our language. >> reporter: how many of you want to see the first woman president? all of you. >> i think it's fantastic that she chose to support hillary and bring in all the women. we really need that support from not only females but the african-american women as well. if she supports and we'll support her. t the. >> reporter: as the two women hugged on stage at this rally, supporters were remined of a different time. clinton's bitter 2008 campaign against senator barack obama. back then things got personal. >> our view was that if you can't run your own house you
6:22 pm
certainly can't run the white house. >> reporter: mrs. obama denied that equip was directed at mrs. clinton. after president obama named clinton as his second tear of state the tension between the two women reportedly continued. but today, they are partners, hoping to take down donald trump. how did you feel to hear michelle obama say hillary clinton, my friend? >> it was amazing and an example for all of us, a sisterhood. they were together and we're all together in this. >> reporter: what did you see between these two women today? >> love, unity, total and complete support. >> it doesn't get any better than being here with our most amazing first lady. >> reporter: especially when the first lady is known as the closer, a nickname she earned as the end of her husband's 2000 campaign. >> she can be a closer absolutely. i'm excited to be here and so excited to vote for a woman for president. >> and randi kaye joins from us charlotte, north carolina.
6:23 pm
do you get a sense from supporters that many of them were there to see michelle obama and might not have even come out to see clinton if she hadn't within there? had they been to a lot of clinton rallies? >> the crowd was huge and they were there to see michelle obama. who were you more excited to see and almost every single person told me they were there to see michelle obama. lot of people said they'd libke to see her run for president someday. it's not just women. she's very popular among that crowd with the men in the crowd, young and old, black and white, you name it and she's really bringing in the african-american voters into the tent for hillary clinton. i talked to many of them who had felt over this campaign they haven't had a hero in the race without barack obama, not
6:24 pm
feeling the passion for clbt clint hillary clinton. >> thanks very much. the panel is back with us this hour. it is interesting to see you hear in that report they maybe once had more of a rocky relationship. michelle obama sees her husband's legacy at stake here as much as anything else. >> without a doubt. she is all in on the hillary clinton campaign and in a way she may not have been when this started out. she has seen this quest that hillary clinton and her team have put together to recreate the obama coalition, african-american voters, she and her husband can go a long way in helping hillary clinton form that. they see that as the path to success. you're 100% right. this is about a legacy but it is not just about a legacy. i think michelle obama really does believe in what hillary clinton has been about. >> she spoke at the democratic
6:25 pm
convention but how big was this tape? after that we heard her getting the speech again today. >> i think that first of all michelle obama is the most effective communicator on planet earth. she is better than president e oba obama, better than bill clinton at his best, an extraordinary communicator. once that access hollywood tape came out, when she came out she went right after donald trump that was bracing and he never fired back once. he fires back at everybody, a gold star mom, whoever you are. he's going to talk about you for four days. he has still to this day never fired back. that gives you a sense of the overwhelming power in his population.
6:26 pm
>> the young lady that said black girl ma'amic that says it all. >> millenial slogan. >> exactly. >> the thing about michelle obama she has the midas touch, the political gold. she has everything going for her and hillary clinton is very, very lucky to have michelle obama in her corner. she speaks like a mom. she doesn't sound like a politician and that's why people are very much drawn to her. she sound like a wife, a mom, you know, and i think it's just amazing to watch. >> as a trump supporter, do you fear michelle obama is the right word, do you hope she doesn't spend too much more time out on the campaign trail? >> yes i would say so. i agree with van jones she's an effective communicator, she'd have a bright political future. that being said i don't know that likability translates. it's important in a presidential
6:27 pm
race, the candidate who fares better tends to win the election. both candidates are unlikeable and unfavorable. i'm not sure michelle obama likability translates to the voteers are in the booth, who is going to better obamacare and the economy. >> it could in terms of millenial voters there's been an enthusiasm dwgap for hillary clinton and african-american millenial voters. >> i think the question is can we go beyond individual surrogates as great ads michelle obama is and can hillary clinton turn this into a late surge of enthusiasm? you saw women get swept into the senate, helped bill clinton win the presidency and not just michelle obama, but elids beth warren, you saw oprah winfrey out there. j. lo will be performing. can you get not just millenial
6:28 pm
enthusiasm but millenial female enthusiasm and can that sweep hillary in and also sweep out democrats. i think that's the bigger question. if it's just as individual surrogates, that can help you in nevada. even north carolina. >> i think you're seeing an incredible surrogate surge here at the end. alicia keys dropped on while we were here tonight. >> i wonder where the video came from. i just thought i don't know, thank you! it was amazing! anyway, a big surrogate surge going on for hillary clinton. >> in terms of, i mean the number of, obviously on the democratic side there's a deep end for popular surrogates good speakers. donald trump is pull huge crowds and enthusiasm clearly visible in the huge rallies, still.
6:29 pm
>> donald trump a surrogate. the more 308 tigss help him the worse. to have politicians coming in think he's great it would break the message he's run on for so long. >> donald trump said melania trump will be making two to three speeches. she almost seemed surprised or stephanopolous seemed to think she was surprised. she's very eloquent, very poised. do you think that is something that can help donald trump? >> clearly. i think she softens him and something gets great media coverage. maybe personalize it, that could help. >> to the up to hall with donald trump family to see him on the stage with his kids it impressed a lot of people. >> even when hillary was asked to see what she admired most, is his kids.
6:30 pm
you haven't seen ivan ka as much as you thought. tonight's unfortunate event sometimes can turn people into sympathetic figures. you wonder whether someone like mike pence, solid but frankly bland, whether or not the trump team can turn this into something more. mike pence dispatched to nebraska, weird they have him in nebraska whether or not you could use him in different ways could be an interesting opportunity to use someone like mike pence differently. >> i'd like to thank everybody on the panel. the picture they paint of the moment when news of clinton's private email server hit it's fascinating. when i started designing a bronx tale: the musical, i came up... ...with this idea of four towers that were fire escapes... ...essentially. i'll build a little model in photoshop and add these... ...details in with a pen. i could never do that with a mac. i feel like my job is... ...to put out there just enough detail to spur the audiences... ...imagination to fill in all the blanks.

6:34 pm
the extra income that i get from airbnb has been a huge impact in my life. today the ratest batch reveals how the campaign responded when the email controversy hit. we have details from jim sciutto. >> reporter: the clinton team reacting with disbelief and frustration as news broke of her private email server.
6:35 pm
in march 2015 john podesta wrote to robbie mook "did you have anied in any ed idea of the depth of the story? "nope. we're told that everything was taken care of. later in july a clinton surrogate and transition co-chair wrote do we know who told hillary she could use a private email, has thatter. been more drawn and quartered before calling the whole thing ex-pleive imsane. menostolen shows doug band taking credit for generating money for bill clinton by arranging speeches and leveraging contacts that donate to the clinton foundation that he dubbed bill clinton inc. he depose on to say since 2001 president clinton's business arrangements yeeled more than $30 million for him personally.
6:36 pm
there's no evidence of quid pro quo between the byes and then secretary of state hillary clinton. >> mr. band called the arrangement unorthodox. the rest of it call it outright corrupt. >> reporter: band playing golf with bill clinton and president owe what wrote the memo after chelle say clinton, taking a more active role in the foundation, expressed outrage over band's action. in one email band "yelled and screamed at my dad." later reacting to news reports examining the finances he e-mailed "i hope someone is keeping tabs on dug banned." >> the clinton campaign thats a matter of policy has not responded to individual emails. they've said you cannot
6:37 pm
guarantee the authenticity of the emails. on this issue they released a statement saying following the state department has made clear that hillary clinton's action were made in the best of american foreign policy and never made of decisions because of donations to the clinton foundation. in that statement they also take a dig at donald trump saying he's not granted in public russia is behind the hacks. >> jim sciutto, thanks. perspective from someone who put out his campaign, david axelrod. as we saw in jim sciutto's reporting there was war been the clinton inner circle. is this infighting common or different? >> i think that there's some
6:38 pm
elements of this that are different. what's interesting about the emails as they emerged chelsea clinton apparently got involved in the clinton foundation, was unhappy with the way the clinton foundation was being run and some of what we've seen in the last few days seems to be a response from doug band around bill clinton and the clinton foundation in defending his role and his contribution. some of it seemed odd to me. for example him boasting that he got speaking engagements for president clinton. i don't know any president of the you state has a problem getting speaking engamements for fairly eye-popping amounts of money and bill clinton is not any mean speaker. he's someone who is in demand, so it seems like the rooster taking credit for the sun coming up. >> there's been this drift or drip of the wikileaks email
6:39 pm
hack. do you think it's doing damage to secretary clinton, do you think the emails in the final weeks have enough in them either individually or just as a mass to sway somebody or turn somebody or does it just reinforce the per acceptings people have anyway? >> she's not done very well on the honesty and trust gen worthy measure throughout. this is not a new situation. my guess is this will reinforce the issues of people who decided not to vote for her, it will not impact the views of those people who have decided to vote for her, many motivated by their feelings about donald trump and it's very late in the campaign. you know, we keep talking, not we but people talk as if november 8th is the day the election is decided, but 40% of the vote will have been cast by that time. millions of votes cast already and i think views of have
6:40 pm
hardened by this point. it's late in the game to see something like this making a te decisive difference. do you recognize the guy on the left side of the screen? he could turn the candidate to the state to lose in utah. we'll get more into it next.

another indication of this election is to put it quaintly a head scratcher. i direct your attention to the state of utah. utah has not voted for a democrat since 1964, all bets are off. few things happening not the least of which is a third party candidate, evan mcmullen. we're joined with more on the buzz from the beehive state. >> this is just a stunning development in this race. utah, hillary clinton shouldn't be in the hunt at all. one poll you see that evan mcmullen at 20%. another poll 26-26 between trump and clinton and see ran mcmullen in the hunt. some special polling showed msurging to the top of the tier. 55% of utah is more monday, so is mcmullen.
6:45 pm
why we saw mitt romney in 2012 have an enormous victory. john mccain beat barack obama in utah, also a republican state. because of the more monday faith this was the best victories throughout the entire country. donald trump should not have this state as competitive at all. >> can you map out a scenario? >> the battleground map. i'm going to give trmp trdonald the battleground states and flip new hampshire and giving him that one electoral vote in maine, get him to 270. this is the winning map for donald trump and take a look now, if evan mcmullen wins in utah, he loses those electoral votes he's down to 264, this gets thrown to the house of representatives. >> and it goes on and on.
6:46 pm
evan mcmullen is the wild card in utah. if he carries clinton to victory either way something that has not happened since the '60s. >> the clock is tingeing. >> how are we doing on time? >> ratesing from one event to the next interviews on tv networks. >> let december this. >> reporter: the unlikely third candidate for president of the you state on uout balantah ball. it's grabbing a quarter of republican voters. if he wins in utah he'd be the first independent or third paerd candidate since 196 to win a state's electoral college votes. do you believe that you are a spoiler? >> i don't. i think we've got to tear ourselves away from this idea it has to be the republicans or the
6:47 pm
democrats. >> we went to a republican event you're not very popular there. >> yes, right. you mean donald trump event. >> yes. >> yes. >> trump, trump, trump! >> he's usurping the voice of the american people. the american voter for this candidate. >> caller: mcmullin is a bad word in this crowd here fors. patience taking on mcmullin directly. >> the truth of the matter there's only two names on the ballot that have a chance to be president of the united states of america. >> if he wins the state of utah? >> then he won the state of out that's it, wow. he's not president. >> reporter: but his campaign has unintended consequences. democrats are for him. clinton clinton close in polls. bright red republican utah, now a battleground state. what do you say to them when
6:48 pm
