to be the one with the momentum as opposed to hillary clinton. so i think at end of the day although talking about last night republicans' ground operation stepped up dramatically, still feels like big picture, a test between organization and momentum and energy and enthusiasm. >> former governor of new hampshire, john sununu speaking for donald trump today and made a headline which i don't think he's made in decades. let's play that. >> playing a little bit off of what bob smith said. his imitation of bill clinton and talking about hillary, you think bill was referring to hillary when he said, i did not have sex with that woman? >> david? >> i will say this, he may not

have made headlines in a long time, but when he was making headlines often by saying the wrong thing and hasn't lost his touch. i don't think that helps. that doesn't help donald trump, so that's not what you want your surrogates out there doing. but about the race overall, i think it's been tightening for some time. the distance from the "access hollywood" tapes and debates and way donald trump reacted to them has been difficult. been good for him. more disciplined. made a lot of the obamacare rate story and fbi story. but race has returned to a normal democrat/republican race in a closely divided country and democrats still have the advantage in such a race. you see it on the electoral map. i think donald trump is still in the position of having to draw an inside straight between now

and tuesday and will be tough to do. >> carl it's interesting, cnn poll of polls, hillary clinton's lead only shrunk by one. up six points before the comey letter, tonight up five points a week later. do you think more has been made of the imsnakt. >> no. i think it was helpful to donald trump and i think that the excitement factor that the trump campaign has been playing on is part of the real dynamic here. they're throwing a lot of hail marys right now. not the least of which is about all of us up here. they know if they can create enough sense of excitement among all of us and in the press that that has a dynamic of its own. sara murray's piece was first rate because it brought us back to the real situation based on her reporting is. their internals also are showing how difficult this is for trump to do. and internals of the clinton

campaign give them a feeling of some real comfort. at the same time sure they're nervous as hell as anybody would be at this point when there is this dynamic that shows trump has been creating excitement, gaining ground but still talking about hail marys. >> anytime the focus is on hillary clinton generally not good for her. same for donald trump. and focus has been on hillary clinton since the comey letter. >> that's exactly right. that's one of the reasons i think this is not analogous to 2012. heard some say romney seemed to make comeback and lost the election. there's intangibles. focus on hillary clinton. fbi bombshell is one and number two enthusiasm about trump we didn't hear about with romney. packing the rallies and this brexit effect we haven't seen since 1980.

ronald reagan was demonized in same way donald trump was. carter saying he is engaging in hatred and stirring the inspector of white sheets. but they turned out and voted for him but i think afraid to say it. >> angela, do you fear a hidel trump vote? >> certainly could be a hidden trump vote. what i will say is the one comforting factor i have in the real clear politics poll barack obama and mit romney were essentially tide at this point and right now hillary clinton is not tide. i know cnn has the poll of polls but i think up by at least three. comforted a little bit but not taking away my nightmares. every day that election cycle we've seen something new. today thankfully about a reporter that had to walk something back that was egregious on the clinton side.

how much time do we have to it clean up messes, some of them false scandals at this point. >> you know what it was like in 2012 for then president obama against mitt romney. do you think hillary clinton in a better spot? >> comparable. polls weren't as good for obama. sense of tied race. some of the same stories. republicans saying the rallies are huge and encouraging and so on. end of the day, first of all had our own data, more reliable frankly because calling of people from voter files. so you knew what their vote history was. so you knew who the certain voters were. didn't have to rely on their own testimony. that created a more accurate polling. even as the public polls said that romney and obama were tied we were up four consistently in

data. both campaigns probably have better than the public polling. you know, i think this is a traditional republican/democrat race as 2012 was in polarized country but where the electoral map favors democrats and demography favors democrats. we'll know. can spend from now until tuesday and then we'll know. >> nothing about this traditional, now suddenly it's traditional? >> i know. better late than never. >> hillary hatred factor is a real difference between what happened in 2008 and '09. that's the wild card. >> mitt romney a little bit better liked than donald trump. >> nobody is going to win a popularity contest. >> i understand what you're saying but i think 2012 is analogous. tea party rising up talking

severely undercounting the latino vote because don't use bilingual callers. one of the firms that does poll latinos bilingually said turnout was going to be historic. enthusiasm is ten points higher than 2012. they estimate that hillary clinton will get 79 to 80% of the hispanic vote and it's the most important election for 70% or more of latinos in this country. what president obama was just saying is absolutely true. this community feels completely disrespected and the kind of hatred and bigotry that has come out of the trump campaign is absolutely dinively unacceptable and going to make voices heard in a way i don't think we've seen before. historic. >> as trump supporter if you

surrogate. calling for -- after trump supporter former mayor rudy giuliani went on fox and friends this morning. guiliani admitted he was leaked information before it became public on friday. take a look. >> all i heard were former fbi agents telling me there's a revolution going on inside the fbi and it's now at a boiling point. >> so you had a general idea that something was coming? >> i had honestly expected it two or three weeks ago. i did nothing to get it out. had no role in it. did i hear about it? darn right i heard about it. >> told today that he had spoken to former fbi agents upset about the decision not to prosecute clinton in july but didn't know about the new review announced in friday. >> had no conversations with anyone inside the fbi. i have heard for the last four

months a tremendous amount of information about the consternation within the fbi, fact that fbi agents were very unhappy with the way they were treated by justice department. that's all true. but none of it came from any current -- i haven't talked to current fbi agent as i told you in the last, gosh, at least eight or ten months. >> representatives elijah cummings and -- are calling for investigations. >> he made it clear wolf that he was getting information from former fbi agents. now mr. guiliani knows better. he's a former federal prosecutor. you don't use the former prosecutors to launder information coming from the fbi. that's basically what he said. we don't have a system of

justice here where you take innuendo and vague pronouncements and put people's careers and lives and livelihood in jeopardy. just don't do that. >> time for the panel. joining us is matt slab and cnn analyst tom fuentes, worked for the fbi. do you believe mayor guiliani was privy to information or just boasting he was in the loop? >> i don't know mr. guiliani personally and never met him. i don't know one way or the other about that. i think that has to be for him to answer to. interestingly on thursday the day before that letter went out i was at luncheon in downtown washington with about 30 current and retired senior executives of the fbi. this is a society of former agents that meets about once a

month at particular restaurant in downtown washington. so here's a group of us there, have the lunch and guest speaker. when the lunch is over usually many of us congregate after and socialize and talk. i stayed about an hour longer talking to many, many executives. and everything from what they're currently doing to what do they think about some of these cases and obviously the most recent case of the director shutting down the e-mail case in july. but there was not one word spoken at all of anything concerning the possible reopening and then actual reopening that was going to happen the next day. not one of us had any clue about that. no one spoke of it. interestingly on friday i was at -- having lunch with people on a separate matter. not fbi personnel. and restaurant we were in had a giant screen with cnn on it.

one of the people i was having lunch with looked up and said, hey look the fbi is reopening the case on the e-mail. that's the first i heard of it. and i same amount of shock from other agents i've talked to. again retired executives that many i had seen the day before, in san diego at police convention early in the month. none of us had a clue. equally shocked that new information came out. >> tom when you hear congressman cummings and conyers jr. calling for launching investigation into alleged or possible leaks to guiliani, should it ge launched or is this what happened in the waning days of the campaign? >> you can't compare this to the waning days of any campaign. everything that's happened in this case and similar going back months. go back to june when president

clinton gets on the plane with loretta lynch attorney general. foreman president. never had an attorney general say with regard to the clinton case defer to the fbi decision on that. never happened. had individual prosecutors recuse individually or say assistant or deputy attorney general or career prosecutors within the department of justice will be involved now in the decision making but never has the department basically abdicated its responsibility to make the prosecuting decision and defer to the fbi. many of us were not happy when that happened and felt back in july when director comey made that press release on the 5th of july thought this has never happened and shouldn't have happened. should have done what was always done, referred it over to the

complete investigation to the department of justice and if loretta lynch decides that the janitor at doj is going to make the decision, so be it. shouldn't be the fbi. felt from that point on this became a highly political situation. >> tom bring in the panel. angela you talked to congressman cummings. think should be investigate? >> raise a number of good points. one thing say in the letter unacceptable for fbi to leak unsubstantiated and in some cases false information about one presidential candidate to -- equally intolerable. lack of public trust is the issue. cummings talked about with blitzer, can't trust the fbi and don't believe in the system or doj, compromised it.

well, we are just four days away from election day, but who's really counting. polls show the race is really tightening. hillary clinton's playbook could be changing. you might remember this moment from the second presidential debate, last month. >> when i hear something like the that, i am reminded of what my friend, michelle obama, advised us all. when they go low, you go high. >> that was then. there on the campaign message lately, though, and it sounds like they're kind of ditching that advice. tom foreman has that. >> just a few days ago, donald trump was endorsed by the official newspaper of the ku klux klan. >> reporter: so much for the high road and so much for the fact that trump immediately rejected that kkk support, calling it repulsive. hillary clinton is making hay of it anyway. >> they said it's about preserving white identity and they've placed their faith and hope in him. >> our military is a disaster. >> reporter: on tv, the internet, and especially in the battlegrounds, the biggest names in the democratic party are stepping up the blitz that started a few weeks ago.

campaign, the democrats would sort of be doing an overarching vision and the polls got tight and now we have this, no? >> and they're doing both. i know that we love to cover hillary clinton when she's really going at donald trump. and frankly, what she is saying is all true. and he's using his own words against him, which i think are quite impactful and quite powerful. it's the same thing that elizabeth warren is doing. the same thing that president obama is doing. frankly, it's the same thing that michelle obama's doing. and if you look at what michelle obama said, she said, going high means going to vote. means making your voice heard. means, making sure that everybody hears loud and clear, especially donald trump, that the way that he has run this campaign with the bigotry and the racism and the misogyny is not going to be accepted, in american culture. >> david? >> i think maybe there's a misinterpretation here. i think there's a basic rule in presidential politics, especially as you're coming down

the last leg of it. and that is when your opponents' poll numbers are going low, you go high. but when the race is close, candidates tend to slug it out. >> we have the michelle obama whisperer, here. >> the issue in this campaign, right now, is donald trump and his fitness to be the president of the united states. that's the bottom line. >> well, also for a lot of trump supporters, hillary clinton and her fitness -- >> that's where i was going. and that's where we are with good reason. and at the same time, what we're also seeing is hillary clinton's world was rocked a week ago. she did want to go high. she wanted to come out of this thing looking toward the transition. well, right now she's looking at the last days of election. and she's had an emotional response among other things. she is in a place she never expected to be. she thought donald trump was going to be the one opponent that she could really wipe off the map. it hasn't happened. her husband has not been an

asset. he's not physically the same bill clinton that we've seen and he's not that well. she's emotional. she's angry -- >> wait. >> she's angry -- no, no. >> let him keep going, please. >> i want to know, how is she displaying emotion? i actually haven't seen her be emotional about this. >> no, i'm saying -- i've talked to people in the campaign and she is emotional. i've written a biography of hillary clinton. i think i know a bit about her. >> i think i do, too. >> she also is in the zone where she's at her best. she's in a warrior mode here. she's doing it calmly. she's eviscerating trump in just the right way. but part of this is because of what happened with comey last -- >> dana? >> so she's calmly emotional. >> i see. >> i just wonder if it was a male candidate, would we use that -- >> absolutely, we would. >> i would sort of say donald trump has been emotional, as well. >> totally, we would. totally, we would.

i don't think this has anything to do with being a woman or a man. no. >> dana? >> whatsoever. >> danger will robinson. i was going to focus on what i was thinking about, as we focus on going high, and going low. it was a nice slogan, a really nice sound bite in a speech. but come on. >> come on, man! >> isn't that the trick of going high. you always say you're going high, but you don't really go high. you just say you are. >> not only did she not go high, the campaign very systemically, very effectivitily, baited donald trump in one event after another after another, whether it was alicia machado or, you know, you name it. now, some of the problems that trump had were self-inflicted, the "access hollywood" tape. but it didn't seem necessarily that she was taking the low road, but she did. there's no question, she was playing very, very hard ball. very down and dirty politics. >> and donald trump certainly is also, you know, going after character issues, as well.

it is interesting, though, in these final days to see him on prompter more than we ever have. >> it is interesting. and we've seen president obama trying to bait him endlessly and it hasn't worked. and we've seen donald trump bring up the fbi scandal a bit. and we've seen him give -- >> he did come close, when he gave that pep talk to himself. donald, stay calm. >> i want to point out, quickly, that going high, apparently means clucking like a chicken? >> that was hilarious. >> when maria said she's using his words against him, i was like, i've never heard him cluck like a chicken. >> if she gets to the inaugural, is elizabeth warren going to do that on the capitol steps? >> we've got to take a quick break. many events happening live tonight. and new potential clues we're getting from early voting. we'll talk about that, what it could mean for clinton and trump as they campaign tonight in key battleground states.
