now that trump is in. did we ever see this happening, the attacking of a civil rights hero, john lewis, and the back and forth between him. >> it would be difficult to find a more represented political action. it's something the president-elect attacked in his tweet. i think this is clearly motivated by donald trump feeling he was unfairly attacked by john lewis, who suggested he was not a legitimate president. it's something that threatens to detract from the inaugural week for donald trump, and presidents used the inaugural address to foster international unity to get over the wounds of a divisive campaign, and donald trump is a much different politician, and unconventional politician, and this is one that

perhaps even he would like back, because it makes it much more difficult for him to stand up at inauguration day on friday and ask americans to come together in the spirit of national unity, and to get over the wounds of the election. donald trump is not a president and a politician who steps back from a controversy once he's in it, and this is something that detracts from the spirit of the inauguration week. >> a republican strategist said this in the "washington post," we listened to democrats saying any suggestions the results wouldn't be accepted is dangerous and unpatriotic, and now those same people are trying to delegitimize trump and saying he should not be recognized as the elected president.

>> to be fair, donald trump won the election, and he won a majority of electoral votes and will president, and it's clearly something he is very sensitive to, and any suggestion he tkpbtd win the election fair and square, he has a point at the same time. the legitimacy of a president has been something festering in america for a number of years, and probably the last president, a majority of the people believed was a president was perhaps george bush, and there were advanced arguments that the president at the time is not legitimate and it's a symbol of the increasing partnership. so this is a theme that has been festering in politics for a long time. donald trump is clearly very

sensitive, and not just in the attacks from the democrats but also, you know, the issue of the alleged russian hacking of democratic servers in the election, and any suggestion that he is not a legitimate president, you know, these arguments that are taking place ahead of the inauguration, i think all are for a very difficult time and a very partisan time ahead, and is something that is not going to go away anytime soon, however, donald trump tries to bring the country together in his inaugural address friday. >> appreciate it so much, and thank you. let's continue the conversation with oliver mcgee, a former white house senior policy analyst and a former trump adviser. dr. mcgee, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let's start with your take on this exchange between congressman lewis and now what we have seen two responses through three tweets from the president-elect. what do you make of the

exchange? >> one thing we have to be sure a. tweet last for about 18 minutes and then disappears in the mist, so therefore we have to really take -- >> i don't understand that. >> well, a tweet basically lasts for 18 minutes. >> how does a tweet last for 18 minutes? >> by the technology. we have to move on. >> i can go on twitter right now and read the tweet. tweets from donald trump that go back years are still there. >> yes, but what we have to look at is that john lewis is essentially an activist that was acting at the time of rule of law, and eventually he was creating rule of law. he's like a greek statesman who has really established, in that time, humane rule of law. essentially for donald trump to be able to get in that type of

conversation in an 18-minute tweet is distracting. >> are you talking about snapchat or something? when we are looking at tweets, this is a running list of these comments that trump has made, anybody on twitter has made that goes back years, and even if you delete it it can still be recovered. lets put that aside. >> thank you. >> do you agree that congressman lewis is all, talk, talk, talk and no action? >> essentially what i am trying to say is congressman lewis is viewed favorably among blacks and whites left and white of the aisle, because he's establishing rule of law when he is doing his activi activism, and that's the wrong territory for activism on the

there's a growing number of democrats now making a push to abandon trump's inauguration, with some bowing out after donald trump lashed out on john lewis on twitter yesterday. the number of democrats who are not going -- these are house democrats, up to 18 planning to skip the swearing in. >> and that includes congresswoman barbara lee who spoke about why she could not be there on that day. >> while the transfer of power, i can't celebrate on inauguration day what has taken place in terms of the president's overall agenda and the divisiveness in his bigoted

approach to governance. for example, i cannot celebrate attacking a gold star family, and i cannot celebrate the deny owe tkpwraeugs of women, and building the wall with mexico and can't celebrate he would try to deport dreamers and i can't celebrate he has put a person who has been on the side of equal justice of the law like sessions, and there are many reasons i can't celebrate on that day, and i just decided several days ago that it would be very hypocritical for me to be there celebrating this agenda that he has put forth. >> cnn's political correspondent with us.

some are breaking tradition and not going to the inauguration as we heard from representative barbara lee, and how much do you think this rift with john lewis is attributing to what we are seeing now? >> it could be a galvanizing event, and democrats are weighing their respect for the office and their tradition against donald trump, and it's a continuation of what we have seen since the election, and there are a lot of people who voted for donald trump and are enthusiastic of him taking office, and we have never seen the protest that is scheduled for the day after the inaugural, and if you look at the public opinion during the transition, his approval rate something lower than we have seen, and

highly likely it will be the first president who comes in with less than a majority saying they approve of his job performance. it's a reflection of how deep the divides are in the country after this election, and the list that you talked about in the last segment about all of the people he atotackeattacked. >> let's talk about the divide tinley here, because more than 150 top donors are going to be discussing how to hold trump's administration accountable and trying to find a strategy for future democratic wins. what is the democratic strategy? >> the fundamental challenge democrats have is that they have a coalition that is deep but narrow. they have won the popular vote in six of the past seven elections, which is something that no party has done in the history of the american politics but they have done that by strong performances among three groups in particular, minority and millennial and college

educated whites, and all of those are concentrated along the coast and in urban areas and they are struggling enormously outside of those areas, and that's what caught up to them in this election in the states that decided it of michigan, wisconsin, and pennsylvania, and they simply were not competitive in enough places, and i think the fundamental choice democrats face is do you double down on trying to squeeze more out of their coalition, the key groups of which they are growing as the shared electorte, or do you find a way to talk to those that moved away from the party. you can win the presidency by squeezing out the coalition, and you can't win the congress, but they have to find a way to get back in the conversation with more of those blue collar and not urban whites. >> and they have to find a new

dnc chairman, and who do you think it should be? >> it's not our place to say who it should be, but do you want a choice that is fundamentally about energy -- energizing, and even with all of that hillary clinton would have won if she would have inspired obama-like turnout among the groups as well, and so it's an important symbolic choice but the party chair is of limited long-term importance, and that's how they position themselves against trump and the nominee the next time around. >> very good point. ron brownstein, always good to have your perspective. thousands of people back

president-elect to not mess with the bedrock of the u.s., is there an economic battle brewing? president-elect trump made his reputation as a dealmaker, but china and mexico have made it clear not everything is up for negotiation. first, china, in an interview with the "wall street journal"s mr. trump said everything is under negotiation, including one china. one china is the policy that accepts that taiwan and the mainland are the same china, and china's government released a statement that said there is but one china in the world, and it's nonnegotiable. the president-elect clearly does not see it that way. >> i fully understand the one-china policy, but i don't why we have to be found by

one-china policy until we make a deal with china. >> and mexico along with u.s. companies that have sent jobs across the border. >> there will be a major border tax on these companies that are leaving and getting away with murder, and if our politicians had what it takes they would have done this years ago. >> mr. trump said a tax on those products could be as high as 35%. on friday mexico's economic minister said his nation could be forced to retaliate and a tariff will have a wave of impacts that could take us into a global recession. it's not limited to the mexican government, and the u.s. chamber of commerce said 6 million jobs depend on mexico. >> tariffs in general wouldn't be positive. i think the thing is making sure that as the president-elect gets

into office and as the administration gets into office that we can have a fact-based discussion. >> what that discussion looks like could determine the fate of the economy, here at home and around the world. >> let's talk more about this with ron brownstein. he's a cnn senior political analyst. good morning to you again. >> good morning. >> i want to start with you where i started at the top of the story, is this just political posturing or are we on the brink of a trade war? >> well, a tougher line on trade, a protectionist view of trade has been the most consistent note from donald trump throughout his commentary on public affairs tracing back decades. it's very clear he wants to both renegotiate our kind of trade relations, and walking away from the trance pacific partnership,

and also that he has been willing to call out and challenge individual companies on their investment decisions and investing in plants overseas in a way that over doubtedly, if president obama had done, you would have seen the commerce building spontaneously combust, and it's clear there will be a different direction on trade and how far it goes and what kind of pushback it gets remains to be seen. >> and currency manipulation is at the center of this and that's the reason many companies are moving to or are manufacturing and have been in china. i want you to listen what he told jake tapper at the start of the campaign about why his ties were manufactured in china? >> unfortunately you would see that it's very, very hard to have anything in apparel made in

this country? do you know how much is made in so many other places. i know you bring that up, but i put ties -- >> it seems interesting because you dinged ford -- >> no, i don't ding them and i think it's a great deal, but i don't think i would let you do it. >> there's an asterisk here that trump companies are benefiting from the policies, and then he depraoeufz american companies for exploiting -- >> if we are going to list all the ways donald trump's actions and words collide with each other -- there's no question american companies have relocated production overseas in a way that has hurt manufacturing employment in the u.s., and on the other hand, a lot of manufacturing jobs in the u.s. are dependant on what are

viewed as a global supply chain, and one of the reasons we can still assemble cars in the u.s. because some of the cars are produced at lower usa, and integrated north american supply chain. imposing tariffs on imports from mexico might make it tougher to assemble finished cars in the u.s. that now support jobs in places like tennessee, and michigan, and other states where we have assembly plants. the global economy is an integrated beast at this point, integrated machine, and kind of pulling away at anyone point. there are a lot of jobs dependant on exports as well, and closing markets could have a damaging affect in that respect on the other side of the ledger. >> we'll see how far he goes. and we have a few days until we hear if it's mentioned in the inaugural address. ron brownstein, thank you so

and federal laws that called it a different name, and they are calling for a special meeting to formerly change the name. and the city manager, vince creole, good morning to you. i went back and searched the city's twitter account and this is where the statement was just posted in 2016 it was not referred to great american's day, and why the use of the phrase this year? >> what you saw last year was a reference to -- you saw a reference to the mlk day parade, and you saw a reference to the city's mlk day parade and celebration, and in fact i thought it was very clever, mgm meet mlk, and we had a huge celebration in downtown biloxi, but what you saw on twitter on friday was a reference to the
