tv   New Day Sunday  CNN  February 19, 2017 3:00am-4:01am PST

3:00 am
i'm here because i want to be among my friends. >> i got a six-foot cardboard box of president trump in my house, and i salute that every single day. >> he needed this shot in the arm and connect with the people. >> i also want to speak to you without the filter of the fake news. >> if you want to preserve democracy was know it, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press. >> let's just be a little nicer to our president. thank you so much.
3:01 am
good morning. so good to see you on this sunday morning. i am christi paul. >> i am victor blackwell. thank you for joining us. what a day for president trump. >> the white house says the president will speak with four candidates, h.r. mcnsaer, and acting national security adviser, keith kellogg, and this comes after general michael flynn resigned. >> president trump is also due to speak with three foreign leaders by phone, and the white house also working to keep one of the biggest campaign promises, repealing and replacing obamacare. president trump promise as new plan in just weeks. >> you want a health care system -- and by the way, we are going to be submitting in a
3:02 am
couple of weeks, a great health da care plan that will take the place of obamacare. >> the president discussing strategy, too, with tom price and budget director, mick mulvaney. the president held a rally yesterday afternoon with 9,000 of his supporters in the audience. >> reporter: the rally was a flashback to campaign 2016 and in many ways was a campaign rally, and it was paid by the president's 2016 campaign, and he was asked why he was doing a campaign event so early in his presidency, and he told the reporters, like is a campaign and making our country great again was a campaign, and here
3:03 am
you had a president repeating a lot of the rhetoric you heard on the campaign trail and a lot of arguments you heard from the press conference, and laying out what some of his greatest accomplishmen accomplishments, and he complained about the travel ban and talked about the need to keep america safe. we have been talking a lot about how it's not unusual to see a president so out on the road early in his presidency to sell something, to sell a specific policy. we have been talking about how president trump was not pushing one specific policy, like the stimulus package back in 2009, how when president obama first took office, but he tried to urge democrats on capitol hill hill to work with republicans to
3:04 am
replace what he wants. >> it's time on replace new reforms for the national health care tragedy, and it's unaffordable and doesn't work. i said to the republicans, i said, you want to do something great politically, don't do anything, and sit back for two years, and let it exfloweplowed the democrats will come and beg us to do that but we can't do that to the american people, we have to fix it and we will. we need the democrats to join hands with us and work with us to build infrastructure all across our great nation. >> there he was urging bipartisan cooperation to get the things done that he wants to get done, and the democrats on capitol hill are interested they are working on republicans on the infrastructure package, and
3:05 am
one more area where he called for democrats to work with republicans was to work on replacing justice scalia, so he tried to sell something when it comes to policy during this speech, but it was something he was looking forward to doing and he wanted to get around to the media filter and talk directly to the people, and he was looking forward to coming back out on the campaign trail to soak up the energy of the crowds that love him. >> thank you so much. let's bring in two of the top two political reporters. gentlemen, good morning to you. eric, let me start with you. this went over well with the 9,000 supporters that were there. did it do anything to reach out to the americans who do not support this president or was that even the goal? >> it wasn't the goal. president trump is under fire right now from republicans. he's having a bit of a hard time
3:06 am
on capitol hill, and there were comments yesterday that i think we will get into that reflected that. what he's trying to do is rally his own base, the people that gave him energy and support throughout the campaign, and sort of show even republicans that he can still turn these people out in force at the same time the republicans are under pressure on the other side from progressives who were showing up at their congressional town halls this week at the same time. that's part of it. president trump also likes to get out of washington. he's having a hard time selling his agenda in washington, and this gives it a boost from outside. part of what he did was play up infrastructure, which was something that senate democrats have been pushing, but republicans are wary about funding, so he did sort of go to a populist sort of message that can appeal outside of his base, and sort of maybe grab some
3:07 am
democrats, but it was really about rallying energy on his own side. >> tom, this was a domestic based speech, focusing on infrastructure and jobs, and he made a glancing blow at nato when he talked about that for maybe 20 or 30 seconds. i want you to listen to what senator lindsay graham said about russia and what this year will mean for congress as it relates to russia. this is what he said in munich. let's watch. >> i hope he will embrace the idea that as the leader of the free world he should be working with us to punish russia, and to my friend, i hope you finally suffer consequences of what you and your regime has been doing to democraciedemocracies, and 2 going to be a year of kicking russia in the ass.
3:08 am
>> it's interesting, isn't it? here is lindsay graham, a republican, and this is a line that, i think, you know, behind the scenes you will hear a lot of senate republicans agree with that sentiment, but not enough that are ready to go out there publicly just yet, and meanwhile you have lindsay graham and john mccain saying we are going to drill down on you. you have to remember, we have three investigations on going three different committees look into this right now, and to russia's interference in our elections, so yeah, this is a threat from him going out there. and it's putting the administration on notice, too, saying if you want to trdrag yo feet on this, maybe senate will drag their feet on this and it's a separate branch, and it was surprising and stark in the terms of language going out there and trying to take a lead
3:09 am
on it, too. there's a lot of republican lawmakers out there that would like to get out there behind graham on this publicly, and eric was saying this earlier, about the town halls and the congressmen, the pressure they are facing, and that's what is holding them back at this point. >> let's talk about obamacare for a moment and what the president said. guys in the control room, let's play president trump at the rally yesterday in florida. >> the people that are put into rooms where republicans are talking about the plan, and it wouldn't matter what they say, for those people, just so you understand, our plan will be much better health care at a much lower cost. okay? nothing to complain about. >> but the timeline we know, eric, has been extended possibly into 2018 for some replacement
3:10 am
plan. >> that's right. part of that was just about punting a little bit, right? this a week that congress is in recess, and so lawmakers are at home, and some of them have cancelled town halls and are not doing town halls at all because they know they are facing intense backlash, so what part of president trump is doing is giving them a talk point of well, we will wait and see what the president does in a couple weeks and go from there, and it's just a dodge. republicans have had seven years where they are promising to repeal obamacare and replace it, and it's clear on capitol hill that they are still struggling on how to do that, and members of the freedom house caucus are looking to repeal obamacare without a replacement already set, and president trump in an interview recently said the timeline could slip into 2018.
3:11 am
they are struggling to figure out what this looks liken though they have the political power to do it if they want. i think the president was just buying members of congress a talk point for their town halls. >> firstly fits and starts there with obamacare. thank you both. let's look ahead. john kasich is on "state of the union" this morning at 9:00 a.m. eastern, right here on cnn. also, who will lead the democratic party? the democratic leadership debate live wednesday night at 10:00 p.m. eastern, only right here on cnn. still to come, federal agents will soon have more power to arrest undocumented immigrants not on their target lists. we'll tell you how the department of homeland security's new immigration policy has fears running high among immigrants across the country if that a new report in michigan says systematic racism is behind

i've also directed the defense community headed by general and now -- well, you know, he said it, he said it.

now secretary, "mad dog" mattis, to develop a plan to totally destroy isis. >> that was the president in melbourne, florida, at his rally last night, and as he renews the vow to destroy isis, iraqi forces are headed into mosul to force the stronghold out of iraq. >> tanks there this morning, and this is the first time ground troops will fight in western mosul. yes, ground troops. one of the main concern is keeping the hundreds of thousands of people that live there safe during this battle. let's get to wedeman. what can you tell us about the status of that fight? >> reporter: this is a fight that we have seen gearing up for
3:17 am
quite some days, kriscrist chri this morning, 7:00, a baghdad time, the iraqi prime minister announced the beginning of the operation, and this is what he said. >> translator: we are announcing the start of a new phase of we are coming to liberate the right side of mosul city, as we have liberated other areas. >> reporter: of course, the problem is there are around 650 to 800,000 civilians still inside the city living under already difficult conditions with just two or three hours of electricity a day, and dwindling supplies of food and water and
3:18 am
medicine as well, and now they are caught in the crosshairs. overnight millions of leaflets were dropped telling isis to lay down their weapons, and civilians to lay low and put out white flags. >> this is the grim choice for children in western mosul right now, and bombs, cross fire, and hunger if they stay, or execution or snipers if they try to run. don't fighters of isis try to infiltrate those areas, and may they not take over some of the homes and try to hide there? how does that manage the fight against isis? >> reporter: it makes it all the more difficult. save the children are saying
3:19 am
there may be as many as 350,000 children in western mosul, and we have seen it time and time again. isis fighters will, in fact, take over homes with civilians in them and use them for sniper positions. i have spoken to people, families who fled mosul, the ae eastern side, who talked about how they had to go through sewers and tkpwulies and what not to get out of the city, and when they are seen by isil fighters, they started to shoot at the civilians. so it's a perilous situation, and the iraqi government is advising people to stay in their homes because they may be safer there than trying to escape. >> hard to imagine. thank you so much for the update. the man who planned the 1993 bombing at the world trade center has died in prison. a prison spokesman said he died

of natural causes and was serving a life sentence for plotting the attack, and he was late to the bombing after they found others where he preached. president trump pulls a supporter out of the crowd and gives him the microphone, but the man, he's got to get past secret service, first. >> that's okay. let him up. i'm not worried about him. i'm only worried he's going to give me a kiss. this is 100% useful for a 100% fresh mouth. just ask listerine® users. the very people we studied in the study of bold. people who are statistically more likely to stand up to a bully. do a yoga handstand. and be in a magician's act.

yeah, happens to more people than you think... try lactaid, it's real milk, without that annoying lactose. good, right? mmm, yeah. i got your back. lactaid. it's the milk that doesn't mess with you. cnn has obtained memos showing the aggressive illegal immigrati immigration. >> the arrest and removal of undocumented immigrant list not on their list. >> and that is making it harder for them to seek refuge, and fears are running high following the deportation raids that
3:30 am
resulted in the arrest of nearly 700 immigrants across the country. >> the new policy has not been published yet and could change before official release. a major battle may be brewing over building a wall between the united states and mexico, but this battle is not between trump and his political opponents. >> instead he may face resistance of those enforcing the wall, and they are looking on plans to build the wall and rather build a fence. >> it's made of steel with a cement base, and the planners who will be in charge of building it call this a fence. this is the most recently built

barrier between the united states and mexico near brownsville, texas. cnn has been told by multiple sources within the agencies involved in building, paying for and enforcing this barrier that this is what president trump's wall may look like, and u.s. customs and border patrol is presenting to look for the plan possibly this week and cnn has learned new details. first, they say, the wall should not be a wall, it should be a fence. that could become a sticky situation for a president who insists otherwise. >> on the fence? it's not a fence. it's a wall. you just misreported it. we are going to build a wall. >> sources tell cnn the biggest job in moving forward is convincing the president the fence is more secure and it would be up to homeland security secretary, john ker kwrlly, to
3:32 am

cost will be significantly lower. it will look like this fencing, steel slats standing 18 feet above, and reinforced with rebar and scement. it will not go coast-to-coast. this is the current fence from the pacific ocean to the gulf of mexico with large gaps in between, for a total of 654 miles. the latest plans involve adding 177 new miles of fencing and replacing 272 miles of already built fence, according to one high-level source with knowledge of the project, and that means the total barrier between the united states and mexico would cover 831 total miles of a nearly 2,000-mile border, still not even half, according to these sources. >> a lot of trump supporters want to see that happen.

up next, we will hear from one specific supporter of the president, a man who was pulled onstage by the commander-in-chief at his rally in florida, and much to the chagrin of secret service. despite your best efforts. but what if you could turn things around? what if you could love your numbers? discover once-daily invokana®. it's the #1 prescribed sglt2 inhibitor that works to lower a1c. invokana® is a pill used along with diet and exercise to significantly lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. and in most clinical trials, the majority reached an a1c goal of 7 percent or lower. invokana® works around the clock by sending some sugar out of your body through the process of urination. it's not for lowering systolic blood pressure or weight, but it may help with both. invokana® can cause important side effects, including dehydration, which may cause you to feel dizzy,

37 minutes past the hour this sunday morning. in the middle of president trump's speech last night, he stopped, pointed to one of his supporters in the crowd in front of him and said, come on down. >> yeah, the president said he recogniz recognized gene hoover from
3:38 am
interviews on television before the rally. >> and i saw this man on television just now, you. i just saw him on television, and he said i love trump, let trump do what he has to do. that's my guy right there. come here! come here. that's okay, let him up. i'm not worried about him. i am only worried he's going to give me a kiss. this guy is great. don't worry about him. no, no, come here. come on up. come here. this guy -- so he's been all over television saying the best things, and i see him standing -- didn't you get here at 4:00 in the morning? >> i did, sir. >> say a couple words to this crowd. >> mr. president, thank you, sir. we, the people, our movement is
3:39 am
the reason why our president of the united states is standing here in front of us today. >> a star is born. a star is born. >> later, gene hoover spoke with cnn and here's what he said in his interview with pamela brown. >> reporter: you got up there and shook the president's hands and said words, and what was that like for you? >> i want to tell you something, it was a moment of my life and i will never ever forget what just happened to me. i have been with mr. president trump over two years fighting battles in and out -- in and out of lies and terrible things always said about him, but we stuck together and it's just an amazing feeling where i am right now. it's unbelievable. >> i have to ask you, and there's a moment there where he whispered something into your ear. what did he say?
3:40 am
>> you know, oh, he says, you are great, if what he told me. if i am not mistaken, he said, you are great -- i was the first one in line, and i got here in the morning, and i got a lot of interviews from news people so president trump must have seen me on tv, and i told the reporter that i love president trump, and president trump heard me say that and he told me that onstage, he goes, you know, he said that he loves me, and i do, with all my heart. because he fights for us each and every second. he didn't have to do this for us. he's 70 years old, a billionaire, beautiful family, and this man comes out and works harder than anybody i have ever seen in my life, and that's why he's a winner. >> so it's clear he saw you on television giving you interviews, and which he is watching right now, which he
3:41 am
very well may, what would you say to him? >> what was that? i didn't hear you. >> what would you want to say to him now? >> to president trump, i would say, president trump, thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to come onstage like that. mr. president trump, i have been with you two years, you probably heard this, every single second and every day i am with you, i have a 6-foot cardboard box of president trump in my house and i salute that every single day, and i pray, and i tell him, mr. president, i play for your safety today skprand i am not l, i say that to the president every day, but he's cardboard. >> what is it about his message that rez esinated with you? >> it's that truth, it comes from the heart.
3:42 am
that's the most important thing. it comes from his heart and he speaks the truth, and that's what we believe, and our movement believes. look at what just started. look. look what president trump says. there's never been a movement like this ever, ever. i never -- i never have been into politics in my life. up until president trump came down the elevator, and he taught me everything. he taught me everything. >> he has been in office, and he has been president for nearly a month, and what is your take so far and how he's done? >> he's doing fantastic. there's no words to describe what this man is doing. he promised to do this. he promised to do that. you have a lot of those voters out there, and i have family members that say to me, they voted for president trump, i hope he does this. i hope he can do this. you know what i say?
3:43 am
he will do this. that's why i love this man, because he is smart and he gets it, and he -- he's going to change the world. he's going to change the world, folks. >> clearly you are a big supporter of president trump, and like you said, this is a moment today that you will never forget being invited onstage by the president to say a few words. thank you for coming and talking to us and we appreciate it. >> can i just say one quick thing? >> quickly? >> yeah, ma'am, very quick. i appreciate the interview and let's just be a little nicer to our president. thank you very much. >> i was waiting for a comment like that from a trump supporter considering he calls us fake news. thank you. >> there was another focus of the major rally, and the president continuing his battle against the media? >> yeah, he was very transparent
3:44 am
about what the rallies allow him to do. >> i wanted to speak to you without the filter of the fake news. the dishonest media, which has published one false story after another with no sources, even though they pretend they have them, they make them up in many cases -- >> joining us live from new york, cnn senior media correspondent, brian stelter. good morning. >> good morning. >> the president got to attack the media early on in his remarks, and listen to a portion of what he said. >> thomas jefferson said, nothing can be believed which is seen in a newspaper. truth itself, he said, becomes suspicious by being put into
3:45 am
that polluted vehicle, and that was june 14th -- my birthday, 1807. but despite all their lies, misrepresentations and false stories, they could not defeat us in the primaries, and they could not defeat us in the general election, and we will continue to expose them for what they are and most importantly, we will continue to win, win, win. >> so there the president is quoting thomas jefferson, and that's not all jefferson said about the media, brian. >> you can always cherry-pick quotes from the founders to make a point, and here's another something thomas jefferson said about the press, if i had to choose government without newspapers or newspapers without government, i would choose the
3:46 am
newspapers without government, and he said it's a crucial check on government and necessary for that. i think what president trump was trying to do by quoting jefferson there at the rally was to say, hey, my comments about the press being the enemy, it's nothing new, and it's an old tradition in politics, and certainly all presidents have had gripes about the media, and some in harsh ways, but we have not heard a preb say the press, these networks is the enemy of the public people, and that's an extreme from past presidents, and i understand what he is doing there, trying to point out there is always a tension between the press and the president, and there is, but the rhetoric from trump is what is different now. >> speaking of what is new, he had a comment about sweden that i think a lot of people are trying to figure out. let's listen to this one. >> you look at what is happening
3:47 am
in germany, you look at what's happening last night in sweden, sweden! who would believe this? sweden, they took in large numbers, and they are having problems like they never thought possible. >> even the former swedish prime minister tweeted out, sweden, a terror attack, what has he been smoking? do we know what he was referring to? >> it could have been a simple slip of the tongue, and he said lots of things, some of them are inaccurate, and it seems to go further than a slip of a tongue, and the best theory was a segment on fox news on friday night, and we know it seems to be the segment on fox from friday night, about a film, a documentary filmmaker that looked at sweden and investigated the refugee
3:48 am
situation there, and suggesting the refugees are bringing violence and threats to sweden and perhaps president trump saw that segment on fox news, and there are challenges throughout europe, and we hear about that from time to time, and cnn has been covering that, and however, what we hear from president trump and others is a description of that that makes it sound worse than it, and he cited nice and brussels, and those are not everyday incidents, however, and they are newsworthy because they are rare and violent incidents, and nothing from sweden from friday night, and maybe that was the fox news segment, and maybe that is the contradiction from the president, and he is a cable
3:49 am
news, so he does decry the media's fake news while watching it. >> watch reliable sources here on cnn. plenty of action last night. andy scholes live in new orleans. good morning. >> good morning. all-star saturday night, always one of the highlights of the weekend. did it live up to the hype? we will have the highlights coming up in this morning's "bleacher report." have laser drilled holes. they release medicine fast, for fast pain relief. tylenol® today, unlimited gets the netwverizon.eserves.
