the refugees we don't know about. is that a fair case? >> here's the thing, he might have been unintentionally right. >> i'll take it. i'll take any kind of right. >> the most recent terrorist attack in sweden was by the norric resistant movement. a neonazi group that attacked a refugee shelter. the larger issue is this, it is uncomfortable, it is dangerous, it is problematic to have a presidency steeped in lies and whether that comes to attacking the press or delivering wrong information you can't run a country if people don't believe what comes out of your mouth. >> it was peter alexanders question to you, biggest win since reagan, not correct. so. >> well it is if you forget about president george h.w. bush. >> so he's only one off.

>> so the question still remains given what he said about sweden it's like if you give this information to the public how is the public to trust you? >> yeah, no, he has a very casual relationship with the truth it seems. i'll try to help him out as best as i can with the sweden thing. he didn't say terrorism. he said you look at what happened there last night, well, three weeks ago there was a story, cnn reported on it, where two afghan refugees allegedly gang raped a sweed. a swedish girl and that was a fairly big story. now it didn't happen just last night. it happened three weeks ago. i didn't see this fox news story that donald trump watched but clearly he just watches the shows, watches tv and thinks that everyone is sort of watching the same things he is so when he says it happened last night this is a bizarre defense i'll grant you but i think that's the best interpretation
3:07 am
of what he said. i don't know that it was an out and out lie this time but it was really bizarre. >> lie again, you know how i feel about that word. if you proved he was being deceptive then you can apply it. it goes to something else and i think that by and large his base is going to agree with him. you let in the refugees and migrants you'll start to have trouble and yes you can study the numbers all you want, sexual assaults are really high in sweed and i know if you research it they'll say they change their law. it's about reporting. it's about how they do each individual case for an allegation. he is still making a point that a lot of americans, refugees and migrants spell trouble. >> that's not true. that's the problem. this is a great example of something candidate trump frankly could have gotten away with but president trump should know better because when candidate trump says it we all

fact check him and we move on with our lives. this time you have the embassy of sweden calling the state department to find out what the president is talking about so there's very real world international implications for when he just watches the tv and then says, then does kind of a short hand version in a speech the next day as the president of the united states. the words have consequences. words matter. >> yes. let's move on to russia. two pieces of news. the senate intel committee issued this letter on friday specifically saying, looking into preserving records more than a dozen agencies and individuals related to the investigation of potential russian interference in the election and you add to that the piece, we heard president trump saying not that he knew of as far as any trump aids during the campaign in touch with russia. add that to the weekend on the sunday show saying just because i'm looking into it done mean
3:09 am
it's there. where are we on all of this? >> this is terrible. there's no nice way to put this. why, think about it on a functional level. the fact that we're less than a month into the presidency and we have to determine as to whether or not this man may have gotten into office with the assistant of a nation. it's a state for us to be in from a constitutional and sovereignty perspective. if we jump ahead he's not going to get impeached but what it speaks to is his inability to establish trust and if we have members of the cia and national intelligence that think these guys are too nice to the russians it makes it difficult to keep our nation safe and that's why these investigations are dangerous. >> reading into everything i created a whole time line about the record. do you have any concerns with all the facts now that mike flynn was made a scapegoat for the administration. that they basically sacrificed
3:10 am
him as someone that would own the russia problems? because the more you look at the facts there, i don't know why they forced him to re-sign. >> it's a little bit confusing, right? so would mike flynn have taken it upon himself to call the russian ambassador and to talk to him about sanctions? that made it possible, you know, but it's also possible that he was directed to do so or that other people were involved in that decision to do so. so right now it's very isolated. michael flynn. i did notice that on one of the sunday talk shows yesterday, he was going a little bit tough on mike flynn saying, you know, sort of saying he wasn't shooting straight with them. he was misleading them and i wonder about pushing mike flynn too far on the way out the door because does he ever talk? is he going to be brought before congress at some point?
3:11 am
that could be very interesting. >> so just quickly, you know, picking up his vacancy right, national security adviser we know over the weekend president trump had a couple of these guys down interviewing potential candidates. a couple of them are now out, when did this get filmed. >> one of these things is not like the other, that old saying, he is someone that really has the antithesis of what donald trump said his foreign policy would be. this is someone very pro-iraq war. neo conservative interventionalist. he has a lot of allies inside the administration. we'll see who ends up getting it at the end of the day but that one doesn't make sense to me. >> professor johnson gave you the buying eyes so we'll save them for our next segment. stay with us.

going through the top tiered one and first on the whole restrict travel for certain countries, as early as tuesday the revised travel ban will be out. and apparently he's going to keep temporary travel restrictions so my question to you is what is the biggest difference? >> we haven't even seen what the new version is going to be. we have to be careful because in the past these things have in fact changed between drafts. the bottom line here is the biggest thing trump has done since coming into office that's been successful is nominating neal gorsuch as supreme court nominee. that's going to make the biggest difference to the people that support him and to some republicans that are on the fence. that's going to give him a lot of credibility. >> matt, you know, they're not correcting something that was a

3:36 am
seems to be him tapping into a larger dynamic of the fears that refugees and migrants present. what do you think the case is for the president's statement. >> well, look i think he saw that segment on fox news friday night and there is a case to be made that there is some sort of link between the refugee and the rise in crime. some people might dispute that and say it's linked to changes in swedish laws but there has been an increase in violence. we know there's been terrorist attacks in germany carried out by refugees. angela merkel admitted there's been flaws and he has a case to be made and the way he structured the sentence might not have been clear to some but it was clear to others. i was at the rally and the person next to me said he's talking about something that happened last night on fox news. >> do you think that's it? it's a question of interpretation. >> no, i don't.
3:37 am
i think the way you structure a sentence is extremely important when you're the president of the united states. president trump should not just assume everyone is watching fox news. the larger issue here is the fact that president is loose with the facts and you cannot make things up about another country and that's what i heard when he said that friday night. >> everything is context, right? do they have problems in sweden -- the raw numbers say they have one of the highest -- now the reason some people would say, the reality is they did change their laws. they're one of the most aggressive in seeing sexual assault for what it is. and you also have a culture of reporting there that is impressive and they report every incident individually. so that if a woman says for a month my boss has been, that's 30 days of reporting depending

3:39 am
powerful medicine for people afraid of the possible sweden is having many many problems and are illuding to the fact that they have consistently taken in refugees and are slated to take in between 25,000 or 45,000 this year. that's an issue. we can't fear monger and again we're not on the campaign trail anymore. >> when you look at refugees, you look at crime, you look at migrants and crime and you know what the counter arguments are.
3:40 am
why isn't that purr persuasive. we had a flaw in the immigration system. it wasn't the refugee system but people say if it can happen it will happen so why not do a 90 day or 120 day until we figure out what is going on in ensuring that american citizens are safe. i understand other things are more likely to happen and the fact that we could is a good answer. >> the difference in safety is a function of your procedure. this ban supposed to come out again this week we're expecting
3:41 am
it won't have new procedures in place. how important is it? >> i think it's extremely important. look i think the policy that we have seen -- again, we don't know what this new policy will look like so we have to be careful about speculating but it is the procedures that matter and will make the difference and if the president and the administration would like to make the case that they wanted to make america more safe they'll have to show us how they're going to do that. just keeping everybody out and saying you can't come in doesn't keep us safe. it's going to be key that we can see and the american people can see what the differences are. >> thank you for coming in on a holiday. important points. thank you. >> president trump again taking aim slamming the media as quote the enemy of the american people. how dangerous is that rhetoric? we'll discuss that with media experts ahead.
