the bowling and pizza party and then you also have him saying that trump is going to have football stadium events in state where is he won by 10 to 12 points. he's going to dare people to vote against him. that would be the stick. how is it playing out? >> we'll see how it does play out but he's not necessarily talking about democrats he's talking about republicans and talking about doing it sooner rather than later meaning primary challenges and they have said they will do anything to get the agenda through which means you can see adds running against republicans that are not supportive of this bill. >> it's interesting to have this insight into how president trump is beginning to sell the bill. so he invited in his conservative groups. there was heritage and tea party patriots and he basically just

started you know saying i'm going to go to the red states and have these big stadium sized period events, that sounds effective. >> i think it's highly effective. if you take donald trump and unleash him it could be very powerful and it's a matter of time. how do you allocate his time? is that a good use of his time but this is a guy that number one in person donald trump is very charming. number two he's the president of the united states. we forget how big of a deal that is. he is also a celebrity. so i think he can move some of these votes through charm but he's also more popular with the republican base than most of the senators and congressmen are in their home district. so if he goes out and starts criticizing them publicly he could probably move votes that

way too. >> all right. this is on going right now. they finished at about 4:00 in the morning. they got the votes there so that's the first step the white house needed to get the agenda going. the energy committee is still debating now. we're trying to grab one of them on break to tell us about what's going on. what do we see what the democrats are doing? i did not hear better ideas coming out of the democrats or them scrutinizing the plan with facts and figures. they were just delaying and saying this is wrong. is that the tactic? >> it's tactics. it's exactly that. >> they want to try to win the policies. this is what would happen to your premiums without subsidies but donald trump, president trump has the rally and knows

how to communicate so if democrats are going to get up in the house and senate and hold press conferences people are watching on cspan they're not fighting toe to eto. now the question though is that president trump ultimately to get this through he needs these republicans and it's still likely to me that people like suzanne collins and some of the house freedom caucus members they have had problems with president trump for months now and he can go to maine and colorado and ohio and shout to the rafters and get his base rallied but some of these republican house members and republican senators they haven't been that close to him from the beginning and the ability maybe limited there. >> do you agree it won't hurt them? >> well, some of them are not going to be hurt. the question is we go down into

the deep south, perhaps, will he go into some of these districts and, well, they're more vulnerable within their own base. >> doesn't he have the biggest stick of all without having to be a bully? this is what we all campaigned on. this is a real binding agent for our base. >> i think it was yesterday he went before republican, the republican congressman and said, you're either for nancy pelosi and obamacare or your for repealing obamacare. this is it. >> the problem is they got close on health care reform and then said okay this is our one shot to get it and then they became divided over what the health reform package looked like and this was a major problem in the 90s they felt like we have the

votes and the energy and they all ran on it and they couldn't agree with the senate and the clinton white house in terms of what the final package is. >> let's get it done fast and we'll worry about the details later. >> we heard this over and over and over again and the dog finally caught the car and doesn't know what to do. one of the biggest arguments is your guest yesterday that said we passed balm care several times through the house and the senate and it never got signed. all of a sudden, why are we doing the new bill now. >> so where does that leave us? right now let's say they get the votes in the energy committee right now then what? what happens next? this is the reconciliation process. >> so there's three phases but they want to do this before like

april 15th for two reasons. if republicans go back home on recess there's going to be protests and town halls and they could lose people and this has to be done during reconciliation. at some point they have to deal with the budget. so time is not on their side. that's why they are rushing this through and that's why this is very tenuous. >> paul ryan made it clear he believes ultimately they have to have the votes in the house and want it done by april 15th. they want house members to go back and say we did our job. now the pressure is on the senate. >> if you're afraid of counter pressure and they lose a budget win if they don't get it done. >> they lose a budge win and house members, all of them are up for re-election. >> and if they lose the

decision. >> having somebody with an independent voice and set of eyes, ears and good brain which is certainly just a minimal description of john huntsman's enormous attributes is a good thing to add a sense of balance and perspective. with russia, we are caught on the horns of a dilemma. some people want to see them as the next enemy and no possibility of any working around with them and others want to glorify them as the new messiah on the scene and president trump is just a wonderful guy we can all deal with. neither of those views have any real sense of reality. and he is an individual who can bring a great sense of reality he speaks mandarin and speaks international politics and he's a remarkably good choice to this job. >> tough job isn't it?

in terms of what is the basic guidance you would have for john huntsman in tackling us right now when russia has become such a topic of conversation. >> i would say form his own judgment about what is real, what is true, what is an opportunity and what are the challenges. our relationship with russia over the years has been difficult and in sometimes very tense and sometimes very confrontational. and together against terrorism. we work together in afghanistan the russians permitted supply. the russians worked with us closely under the international space station. we tried to work with them on syria and some of that has begun to come back again and there's a number of things there that formed a basis for moving. a critical question for john

huntsman. as for this administration it can be rather than add notes of confrontation add notes of sanity, of care, of stability in that relationship rather than talk about the possibility of using nuclear weapons. the experts can tell us 10 ways we can make mistakes and have accidents and slide into nuclear use but i don't know if there's anybody that can tell you once it get gogs how can you stop it. not just the united states and russia but the planet. we need to keep our deturrent strong but we need to speak clearly and rationally and put together the next steps in making that more stable even as we look at repairing it if there is any difficulties or dangers there. >> let me ask you something, all of this investigating into contacts between the trump

campaign staff and current staff and russia, how unusual are these different points of contact? are you more interested in what was done or what was not disclosed. >> look, chris, what has been a serious problem has morphed into a situation where we have demonized contacts from russia. our works with the russian contacts are essential. but he is a friend and is also a diplomat and very, very smart and very intelligence guy and anybody that would want to know about u.s. russian relationships would want to strikeout and talk to ambassador about how he sees things and what is going on. that point of view, that opinion is significant in the mix. it won't be the final answer for

everything. but failing to make those contacts is i think a bigger fault than having the contacts at a time when the situation is obviously swinging between the two extremes i just explained to you. >> so you don't think that the fact that flynn was meeting with the ambassador and talking to the ambassador or the same with jeff sessions none of that concerns you but you say the problem is telling the truth. what do you mean then? what's the concern? >> we all know that general flynn had a problem possibly with the vice president in terms of depicting the conversation he had. that's an internal matter within the administration but it has consequences obviously, secondly attorney general sessions in his hearings said something about his context and doesn't seem to have reflected what happened and
