good day to you, the u.s. president seems to be striking a curiously different tone toward the north korean leader kim jong un. in a new interview, he said that he's "a pretty smart cookie." the u.s. is open hoping for a democratic solution for the nuclear crisis, mr. trump is not ruling out military action, as well. >> he's been accused of brutal human rights violation. but will be to what the president said in a new interview about the north korean leader. >> people are saying, is he sane? i have no idea. a lot of people don't like when i say it, he was a young man of 26 or 27 when he took over from his father, when his father died. he's dealing with tough people, in particular, the general and others at a young age he was

across all of our alliances and to have appropriate burden-sharing responsibility and responsibility sharing. we're looking at that with our great ally, south korea, nato. >> cnn is following this story from across the region mckensie is in beijing. >> let's start with you, not only is the president appearing to praise north korean's leader, but these doubts of being raised about who will by for the antimissile defense system. what has been the reaction to all of this, seoul. >> the certainly being some concern when he said it should be south kree i can't have who said who should pay for it. we've had a critical statement from the defense ministry, again, this monday morning in a press conference defense ministry spokesman saying that

the deal has been done. they've been both shaped that this deal and it has been agreed upon. the fact that the south koreans would get the land. but the united states would pay for the operation costs, the personnel costs and that has been agreed upon, saying they don't believe that it can be renegotiated. we certainly see on social media, as well, people have been rejecting what president jump said. when you look at the recent polls, 50% said they support, but 40% said they did not. so it's certainly not an overwhelming response south korean even wanted in the country. certainly, they don't want to pay for it themselves. when you mention about almost praising kim jong un. he gave him credit for the fact he was able to take over the country at such a young age.

this is something of much -- one that has transferred to the presidency. >> president trump has invited the philippine president raising some eyebrows, given his reputation as a leader. what's the logic behind this reputation and what's been the reaction. >> the white house is given the logic as being the important for them to curve the missile ambition. you know, most -- when you pull an expert to follow this region. the philippines isn't the key player in anything to do with north korea. long-term it's important strategic ally of the u.s. it's come to a frosty period and president ted who at one point just months ago called the u.s. to go to hell and that's probably the mildest thing that they can say he said on

television. so, certainly, under president obama there was a war of words particularly going on the brutal crack down of drug uses and drug sellers in the fephilippines in which they say is a violation of the rights of people in that country. you've also seen the president getting a lot closer to china in that period, rarely stopping the objections, on many levels, of the philippines towards china's moves in the south china sea and calling on more chinese investments. in terms of regional affair, that's a threat to the spear of influence with the fill feens. that might be another reason that president trump is bringing or asking the president of the philippines to visit the white house. as you say, it's raising eyebrows with hue minnesoman ri

south korean citizen. her old home, just a 20-minute flight away, if you could fly. i'm taken to see the husband and her daughter. we sent a crew to south korea to speak with your wife and mom and she recorded a video message that she wanted. she wanted you to see.

i'm also taking the to meet her aging parents. her father is 75, her mother, 72. >> when you see her, i can't imagine what you're thinking. >> since she left, her mother has gone blind in one eye. she's losing sight in the other. she worries time is running out, that she'll never see or hold her daughter again. they can't call, they can't e-mail, they can't even write a letter. no way to communicate.

we let her husband and daughter use my phone to send a video message back to south korea. she tells her mother how she just graduated from catering school and now she's a chef. she hopes that someday her mother could take what a good cook she's become. she shows off their new apartment and moved in here after she left. no matter what's happening in the outside world, this is reality for this family and many others on the korean peninsula. so many families divided. >> heartbreaking situation for that family. earlier, he speak with reply, she asked if the north korean could punish this family. >> north korea said families are not punished. they've taken us to meet other families to show us their living

republicans and others outside of american hill who would try to influence, who weren't commenced whether it's high or -- that has been mentioned as a way to cover folks. we'll be able to coverage be affordable. will they be subsidized enough. >> on the state of the union, it was interesting to see a trump supporter, former pennsylvania senator, giving the president a bit of advice about how to approach legislation. >> the president has to be more engaged. there's one thing i'll give it, is he really needs to get his policy chops, you know, in line. he has to start understanding the details, particularly when it comes to health care and understand that unless he engages in the convincing number, iebl not going to resort that privacy.

integral part of the u.s. strategy in syria and remain a major point of contingent for the turkish president who is set to meet with president trump. is it possible for these two leaders to form an even close r alliance, given their differences? >> we'll have to wait and see, george. things are not very clear when it comes to policies with this new administration. there are a number of key issues on the table for them to discuss. the issue of the syrian kurds. it's going to be a critical part of this new u.s. administration's relationship with turkey. the ypg has been key, the most reliable partner for the united states on the ground in syria when it comes to the fight against isis described auz one of the most capable fighting

forces there on the ground. but, you know, under the obama administration, the policy has always been to fully back the ypg and to arm the group and another pus ally, of course, turkey was not happy about that. for turkey they see the ypg as a terrorist organization. they see it as, because of it's affiliations with the pkk, the turkish, kurdish workers that turkey has been battling since the 1980s. they see the ypg, as turkey describes it, as the syrian branch of the pkk. so it's a very complex situation there on the ground, of course. we'll have to wait and see how the united states is going to deal with this issue, of course, it really needs the ypg, right now. as they're making these steady games towards the city of de

comments? given one's human rights. >> i didn't think about this is that he is trying to have a little diplomacy through saying some words of praise at the same time he's acting tough with threats, military strikes and action. that's the powerful way to see it, there is no plan. this is the president who is all over the place and sometimes making comments about controversial leaders who have human rights violations and other kind of abuses and not really thinking through the implications of doing that. we don't know who he is. but these are comments that are scatter shot. that's how he's conducting this diplomacy. >> interesting. we are still getting contradictory comments from mr. trump's team. his national security adviser said the united states would stick to its agreement with south korea for the fad

antimissile defense system, but suggested paying for it could be renegotiated. that's not exactly what president trump said. and there are concerns tlur no issues of it's created. how might this be resolved, you think. >> this is a problem because one of the best allies that we've had in this situation is south korea. and so there can't be any signs of weakening that relationship because that in itself could involve under north korea or to take more mig tear actions in the coming months. i think that needs to be clarified. it's not a place where you can send mixed signals because they could have disastrous consequences. we'll see in the next few days, the administration starts to clarify what its positions are and to take certain comments he's made, meaning president

trump off the table zbh will feel pressure to make different story. what did you make of the news, the trump adeids. what do you think of behind that decision and, of course, the timing of it. >> this is and the public to clean out some of the more controversial parts of the administration, as the add mip strags, at least, tri -- admini presents more of a stream. he's been for his connections to antise mettic organizations. in some ways, this is a little bit like steven bannon being pushed a bit to the side, as others become more of the face of this administration. >> all right. julian, many thanks to you for your analysis. we appreciate it, always. >> thank you.

crack down on drugs in his country. >> he's suggested that he's been a cannibal once more. critics say he carried out human rights abuse. but the white house says to tear it and being helpful. let's now bring in john, he's the advocacy director for human rights, watched. it's good to have you with us, john. this came as quite a surprise to many people in washington. the president and of the united states inviting to washington. what are your thoughts. >> inviting somebody who is says they have killed people with his wrong hands and promoting a murderous war on drugs, is not embracing of human rights principles, very disturbing what the white house has done here. they're basically sending a

message they believe the illegitimate violence is more important than human rights law. >> looking back at the previous administration. what are the differences is how the obama administration interacted with the philippines, versus this new invitation from president trump. >> well, he's only been president -- he's only been president for more than a year. president obama was hands off with him. he recognized that this was a man who had a very serious human rights record and was not -- this was not the kind of person you invite to the white house. you went out to deal with him on asia issues as it came up. but it will never be the trump person to be invieded to the white house. i think all of that republicans and democrats in the house agree with that. they don't really see this person as the kind of person the united states should be doing business with. invite him to the white house and simply is amazing, most

people in the united states, congress, allow standard on both sides of the aisle are very disturbed by what happened today and will probably be making their concerns known to the white house. >> but to give some context here, the president saying, obviously, that given the tensions in north korea, this is an effort to just reaffirm alliances in the asia pacific region to reach out. your thoughts geciven what's happening on the korean peninsula. >> human rights watch has worked on north korean. and we support any effort to sideline and isolate that regime. but let's be honest, the philippines is not a key player in that battle. china is and some countries, have been flaunt and nonproliferation on sanctions to bomb north korea, should be dealt with, not just china, but
