vaughn jones in london where it is 10:00. welcome to this hour of newsroom. stay with us. see what's coming up. straight to the first story. the search for a new fbi director gets under way this saturday at the u.s. justice department. acting director andrew mccabe will be among those interviewed to replace james comey who was of course fired by president trump on tuesday. the dismissal itself came just as the fbi's investigation into russian modeling was starting to gain tracks. calls for independent prosecutor to take over the investigation are growing louder in the wake of comey's firing. some democratic lawmakers say the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein should resign if he is not willing to appoint special counsel. those close to rosenstein say he doesn't see the need for an outside prosecutor. >> it is not clear why comey was fired in the first place.

the white house has given conflicting reports and accounts. rather than settling the matter, the president friday offered a threat, hinting his conversations may have been recorded in case comey decides to go public. jeff zeleny picks up the story here. >> reporter: president trump adding fuel to the fire in the escalating fight with the fbi, making a veiled threat on twitter to james comey. the president saying the fbi director better hope there are not tapes of conversations before he leaks to the press. stunning words from the commander in chief directs at the top law enforcement official, leading the investigation into collusion between the trump campaign and russian operatives before being fired tuesday. the president refused to answer the question he raised himself in an interview with fox news. >> what about the idea that in a tweet you said there might be tape recordings?

>> that i can't talk about. i can't talk about that. all i want is for comey to be honest and i hope he will be, i am sure he will be, i hope. >> reporter: the white house press secretary refused to answer if there's recording system in the oval office or whether the president is taping conversations there or elsewhere. >> i talked to the president, he has nothing further to add on that. >> reporter: when asked again and again, supervisor disputed the suggestion the warning to comey was a threat. >> that's not a threat, he simply stated a fact. the tweet speaks for itself, i am moving on. >> reporter: it is unclear if the president is moving on. after making his feelings clear in an nbc interview thursday. >> he is a show boat, a frand stander. >> reporter: at issue a dinner he invited him to seven days after taking office.

he asked the fbi director about loyalty. >> had a nice dinner. at that time he told me you are not under investigation. >> reporter: the investigation is what led to comey's firing, credibility of the president and advisers is in question as the white house is increasingly consumed by chaos and crisis of leadership. the president has isolated and agitated associates, finished a full week barely seen at the white house before this brief afternoon appearance with the first lady. >> what a friendly, beautiful group. >> reporter: his views have been heard in a whirling twitter fire storm, offering no apology but bluntly conceding accuracy seems optional. as a very active president with lots of things happening, it is not possible for surrogates to stand at the podium with perfect accuracy. he went on to say maybe the best thing to do would cancel all

press briefings and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy. >> full house today. >> reporter: the press secretary was at the podium after a perilous week for the administration. >> time and time again, attempt to parse every word, make it a game of got you. >> reporter: looking to put blame elsewhere, he is frustrated by the communications team saying he may take matters into his own hands. >> sean supervisor, he is an amazing man. >> is he the press secretary tomorrow? >> he is doing a good job, gets beat up. >> will he be there tomorrow? >> he has been there from the beginning. >> reporter: spicer is in place in time to be lampooned again on "saturday night live." melissa mccarthy spotted in midtown manhattan, building this week's episode. >> as this chaotic week comes to an end, many questions remain. when will the next fbi director

and does the president have a recording device in the oval office or elsewhere recording conversations. the white house would not talk about that, but going forward. this issue of firing james comey sometime eeed the legislative agenda, they'll be traveling abroad next week, first foreign trip of the presidency. hoping that gets the president back on track. jeff zeleny, cnn. let's get some perspective what's happening with sylvia better elly live from london. always a pleasure to have you. let's talk about the threat made on twitter by the president of the united states to the fbi director, former fbi director, james comey. first of all, what does it say about mr. trump putting that on record on twitter? what about the people around him who are supposed to be his advisers? >> first of all, we are talking about a threat, but depends who you ask if it is a threat.

sean spicer said the president was stating a fact, it wasn't a threat. now of course we know the president has a very unorthodox way of doing things and takes to twitter every time he has to voice his mind. it is quite telling about the president's style, the fact that his aides are really unable to manage what he says and what he does when he's holding his phone and tweeting away. at the same time you have people surrounding him, surrogates at the white house having a difficult time handling the president and keeping up with his pace. this is something trump himself has said. now is it the president's fault and his way of approaching things that is making everyone's life in the white house so difficult or is it these people that are not up for the job. what i can say is that from here and europe and most people in the u.s. i think did actually see trump's tweet as a threat to

former director james comey. as if he wanted to warn him now that you're out, please don't say anything. don't talk to the media and watch out. we have to see what happens going forward. >> you play out that sean spicer says it is a fact on twitter. looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, i think we call it a threat. we are calling it a veiled threat on cnn to the least. mr. trump hints there might be recording device present during conversations with comey. the president nor his press secretary would confirm or deny whether recording devices are there. what are the implications if they are there? >> i mean, the fact they wouldn't confirm or deny is already quite telling in itself, we know about trump and spicer have always very forcibly rebuked any statement they thought was inaccurate. the fact that they're vague hints at the fact there might have been some recordings.

at the same time in the states it varies state to state whether it is legal to report conversations without people present all being aware. in d.c. it is legal if all trump are aware. it is not illegal for the president to have tapped anyone at the white house, but at the same time the result is just going to be there is mounting pressure on the white house to produce recordings if they exist. some democrats have already asked the president to bring recordings forward if they exist. we know i believe a buzz feed report that trump had the habit of recording people and did record in march a lag oh during the campaign last year. you know, he just has a different way of doing things. this is another fact that points to the fact he does things in a

different way. people want to know about what these recordings say and if they exist. >> you point out he does things in a different way. many people that supported mr. trump, continue to support him, looking for change in washington as they -- there is tradition of the press asking questions, continuing to probe and get information for people that we serve. but there's a question, the president suggested he may scrap press briefings all together, basically saying his surrogates aren't able to keep up with a busy president with complete accuracy. your thoughts on that? >> i have been chatting to colleagues at politico in washington, they don't think that will happen any time soon. trump loves the press briefings and is obsessed with the media.

rosa maria pay welcome back to cnn newsroom. i am george howell. computers around the world held for ransom due to a massive cyber attack that hit 99 countries so far. one calls it the worst attack he's seen. samuel burke explains. >> reporter: let's be clear from the outset, this is unlike any cyber attack we have seen before. this isn't hacking of passwords or credit card numbers. this is ransomware, going through the internet, looking for vulnerable computers without

people having to click a link on a fishing e-mail. it takes over the computers and demands $300 in bit coin for access to their files again. what's most troubling, it isn't just effecting big companies and individuals, it is also effecting hospitals. in the uk, multiple hospitals had to cancel outpatient appointments because their computers have been effected. at the root is a flaw in windows which microsoft has been trying to correct since march. but it can only be fixed if you, the user, do the security update. so often you get that notification in the lower right corner, don't want to restart the computer. this is proof you need to do it immediately. if you haven't updated your windows computer since march, you could go victim to this malware. nobody is pointing fingers yet. cyber security researchers say it is too soon to do that.

it is interesting, the cyber security research firm have a map of places most effected, so far that is taiwan, ukraine, and russia. so we can't be quick to say it is the chinese or russians because russia is one of the biggest victims of the malware. this could be happening because just last month a group published code they say was nsa spy tools, including this code that went after this vulnerability in windows. and with that, the former contractor edward snowden tweeted the following. if the nsa had privately disclosed the flaw used to attack hospitals when they found it, not when they lost it, this may not have happened. samuel burke, cnn, new york. following the impact of the hacksing in london, we have the latest from russia. samuel was saying one of the

countries worst hit by the hack. nina, to you first. samuel was saying it is too soon to point a finger of blame. now that we moved on, can we say for sure with any certainty who might be behind it? >> not for sure. cyber security experts say it is probably a criminal gang trying to ransom people's data to get a lot of money rather than state sponsored cyber attack which is the type of thing we heard a lot about in the last six months or a year. essentially esshe is explaininge tools which was leaked in march, 20 years of cyber charge to ransomware demand for money, encrypting people's information on computers saying send us $300 in bit coin, which is a crip tow currency on the internet and then we will give you data back. monitoring some bit coin accounts to find out who is paying, where the money will be

going will be key to try to find out who might be behind this. for the moment, cyber security experts and national cyber security ex-% like the one in the uk are working overnight. seem to be leaving tools, the explanation it is a criminal gang that managed to get its hands on something very powerful. >> what measures are in place to prevent the spread furlt or is it all individuals uploading this virus? >> what's key about this is that if you look at this particular attack, it used large organizations with large scale internet work. that's why it is successful and spread quickly, from rigs interior ministry to national health service in the uk. these are government organizations but also private sector effected. big private entities with large numbers of computers, sinked up to the same central hub. that's how a virus like this spreads laterally.

think about management consultants that may take their laptop to a cyber cafe and that could spread it to other computers in the same cafe. this is how they start. seems like it is large organizations targeted in particular for money, for data, and spread quickly through computer negotiatitworks and sp from there. >> russia reports one of the worst effected countries by the hack. what are the russians saying, did they manage to get a grip on the spread of the virus? >> there seems to be some disparity of attacks, what we are hearing in terms of who has been targeted. doesn't seem from reported attacks as though it would match up with the huge amounts of sort of dots that you see on the

sites suggesting russia is being targeted. what we know is interior ministry says 1% of computers were effected but they don't think any data was leaked or released and their servers weren't damaged. russia health ministry says they weren't compromised. seems to have hit several domestic banks and telecom companies reported attacks, they provide a megaphone. we know from the adviser to putin, he says this won't have big democratic impact, may see various data breaches. and we heard from edward snowden, pointing at the nsa. considering russia is so often at the center of hacking allegations that the original group who hacked the nsa were called shadow groupers, and

edward snowden in the past suggested based on circumstantial evidence he admits himself, suggested they were associated with the russian government. but once they put that data on line, the spy tools which were exploiting this vulnerability in the microsoft system, then anybody could get their hands on it, cyber criminals. it would appear as what nina was saying, this was cyber criminals that realized they can make a lot of money holding so many companies around the world ransom in this way. >> thank you both. the airline industry is bracing for a major change. the united states set to expand its laptop ban to flights coming from europe. but officials there say new restrictions may pose a safety risk. renee marsh has more. >> reporter: as the u.s. moves toward expanding its ban on all electronics larger than a cell

phone from the main cabin of u.s. bound aircraft, airlines are in preparation mode. department of homeland security is preparing to announce it will expand electronics ban to europe. the ban is in place for flights from ten airports in majority muslim countries. expanded could impact more than 350 flights. europe is the busy is international corridor. delta, united, american airlines are u.s. carriers impacted most. they have the most flights on this route. right now, airlines are trying to figure out new protocol and policy how to check passengers nor compliance, are also working with international airports to reconsider setup to isolate passengers and flights bound for the u.s. ization the ban was in place because intelligence suggests that terrorists perfected

from europe. the u.s. appears set to expand a ban on laptops and devices bigger than cell phones and cabins. european officials warn placing them in cargo holds is a fire risk, due to lithium batteries. pope francis is in portugal, celebrating mass at one of the holiest sites for catholics around the world. live pictures from portugal. they believe 100 years ago today the virgin mary spoke to three children and foretold the future. they canonized two of the children with the third child on the path to saint hood as well. former u.s. officials reacting to white house claims about james comey and the russia investigation, former head of national intelligence in the u.s. among those challenging the president, including his suggestion there's no evidence of collusion between the trump team and russia. jim sciutto has this report.

>> reporter: the nation's former top spy said he never ruled out evidence of collusion between tru russia associates and the trump campaign. says there's no collusion, when does it end. in an interview with msnbc, former director of national intelligence says he believes. >> there was no evidence that came, that rose to that level at that time that found its way into the intelligence community assessment which we have pretty high confidence in. not to say there wasn't evidence but not that met that threshold. >> reporter: during the press briefing, sean spicer insisted it is james clapper changing the story. >> it is interesting how the story changed. now saying i wasn't sure about it. the burden seems to be on him, not us. >> reporter: clapper expressed doubts about mr. trump's version of a dinner with fired fbi

director james comey in january. >> he wanted to have dinner because he wanted to stay on. had a nice dinner at the white house. the dinner was arranged. i think he asked for the dinner. >> reporter: clapper says it was trump that invited comey. >> he had been invited to the white house to have dinner with the president. >> reporter: and the former fbi chief was uncomfortable with the invitation. >> they're in a difficult position to refuse to go. i do know he was uneasy with it for, just for the appearance of compromising the independence of the fbi. >> reporter: the dinner came one day after then acting attorney general sally yates warned the white house that then national security adviser michael flynn could be compromised by russia. that timing raising concerns about white house interference in the fbi's on-going investigation whether or not trump campaign associates callused with the russian government. cnn learned comey was taken aback when trump asked him to

pledge his loyalty during the dinner. source close to comey says the fbi chief refused and instead promised to always be honest with the president. in fact, fbi employees pledge to be loyal only to the u.s. constitution, not to any individual, including the president. >> all of us in the fbi are focused, hyper focus on to the mission. >> reporter: comey assured mr. trump he was not under investigation related to the russian probe and asked to keep him on. a source tells cnn this is a fabrication that comey did not ask to keep his job and in fact three days earlier, the president told comey he would stay on as fbi director. the source adds former fbi chief as quote not worried about any recorded conversations between him and the president after trump issued a thinly veiled threat to comey, tweeting james comey better hope there are no

tapes of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press. james comey was invited by the senate intelligence committee to testify next week. we learned he has turned down that invitation. i am told by someone with firsthand knowledge of his thinking he wants to take some time off and lay low for awhile. jim sciutto cnn, washington. >> jim, thank you. let's get back to the other main story we are following. the global cyber security breach. thousands couldn't access computer files unless they paid ransom. hackers targeted computers in 99 countries, especially ukraine, russia, taiwan, and we still don't know who is responsible. stewart mckenzie joins me live, vice president at a security firm. thank you for joining us this morning. this attack is massive. isn't it? we don't know who is responsible but who or what could be capable of exposing this vulnerability. >> i say it is huge. spread of attack has been so

quick. it has taken everyone by surprise. initial attack was an e-mail and starts propagating. who is an interesting question. when we look at it, we see them asking for a crip tow currency, makes it harder to track. i think it is more how easy it is now. >> going after anyone? >> there's no targeting, there is, but it is more about people that value pay vulnerability. it is just that organizations are slow to patch against the microsoft vulnerabilities recently patched. organizations needed to patch.

this is what they're exploiting. >> was this foreseen? microsoft, have they said anything, did they warn they were vulnerable? >> no more vulnerable than normal. the issue is this is advanced attack that's been deployed. organizations need to patch against it. what it is is an interest in news to deploy e-mails and use these to further propagate, using vulnerability to enable massive spread of secondary infections. they issued the patch in march. some organizations have an effective patch management program. >> and then it is for users to use that patch when it is issued. >> if you can't patch. you can't patch every machine, put in additional controls, mend them, keep them away from the internet. even if you can't do that, limit the amount of computers that are

vulnerable so you don't have such a widespread effect. >> you said before we came to the interview, you think this is not the end of the story. >> absolutely not. we see how effective the campaign has been. you look at the efficacy the guys had with being able to -- the way the attack worked, once it established a foot hold, looked for a website to reference and they identified that, were able to put a website in place so it stopped that initial infection. we're going to see other people quickly reuse the techniques. it will take people awhile to catch up. i expect secondary and tertiary waves. >> thank you for updating on what we know. thank you for coming in. >> thank you. still ahead, we go to portugal where pope francis is having mass at one of the
