assault internally. >> internally, from the president? >> exactly. >> more than 200,000 computers across the world were infected by the global cyber attack. welcome to our viewers here in the united states and all around the world, great to have you with us, i'm rosemary church. >> i'm george howell from cnn world headquarters in atlanta. newsroom starts right now. north korea claiming a major nuclear success. they claim this latest test prooufrs it can put a large nuclear war head on a missile. that goal has been a key ambition. now, north korea also claiming it is capable of striking the mainland u.s., there's no independent evidence to support those claims. let's get the latest now from seoul south korea following the

story. there have been failures and successes, what more do we know about this particular missile and this rather bold move. >> reporter: this is being regarded as a major step forward for north korea. but big picture. let's put this into context. we know the goal is to develop a ballistic missile, a missile that's capable of reaching u.s. mainland. they have made claims before about having been able to put or being able to put nuclear war heads on their missiles, those claims haven't been able to be independently verified outside of north korea. what they've been working on two tracks at once and working on the missiles that deliver them. this latest test teaches us a lot about where the missile program is. u.s. officials, to be clear, say there's in indication this is not follow at all the pattern of

missile. it went higher and further than previous lawyers from north korea. it landed from chicago and analyst are saying it represents a step forward in terms of working that missile that they so want to have ready, george. >> it's not an acdm. again, this missile, it's the first test in north korea, rather, in south korea of the new president that represents a shift in policy. tell us more about how the new president is reacting to this. >> reporter: yeah, he's been in office for less than a week, so this is a test that comes quickly, but it certainly wouldn't be unexpected. this is exactly what the south korean president would knew he would face with with arch. he president moon p this is a departure over the last sten years in south korea.

university. he joins us now in south korea. thank you so much for being a witness. so north korea has declared its latest ballistic missile test a success. so how do we gauge the progress made and whether it is, indeed, another step forward in the goal to carry a large nuclear war head on a missile that ultimately hit the u.s. mainland. >> right. so they say this kind of stuff a lot, about year and a half the north koreans told us they had developed hydrogen bomb, they lied. we need to be careful about they tell us, i think we should wait to see if they launched a missile that flies a long distance. most of these missile launches have been quite short range. they slide east. if they actually have an acbm that flies multiple pilots on that we need actual sing or

scandal. we just don't know what to decide it. i don't think we should get through it. two alarmers. >> the boys fly much gator distance. >> so that leads me to my next question: is there sufficient analysis being done to make an accurate assessment, whether he could fulfill his threat to hit the u.s. mainland. how do you do an analysis like that with the information we have? >> sure, that's the big problem. we have lots of experts on the outside that can make these sorts of evaluations when you do the nuclear test and study the size. we don't know that north koreans don't tell us anything, which is one of the real problems. we don't actually know what's going on. so a lot of this is conjecture. i think the chinese might be able to get greater information and give it to us. i am concerned they get scared about having north korea and nuclear weapon. they make me want to share information with us. the north koreans don't tell us

a great deal, it's a lot of speculation. when they launched and see it flies a very long distance, that strikes me more resident to let out the bugs. >> how should we be about the potential of so these -- in asia what needs ton involved. serial. >> i agree they're in the direction right now. they would not be doing all the tests. they want some -- they ran they through to basically scare everybody. that's what they want, the question is how long will it take them to get there. if you look at the development, but they eventually got the ability and american missiles to strike very far away. >> probably north korea can get there, but mainland win. >> but all this testing is driving in that direction.
