is there. >> reporter: we spent our day talking to people in the area. one woman with a child next to her. she said what are we teaching our children. and some say don't judge a man by one action. he will be judged in court on june 7th. he will face more questions before then. >> i'm sure he will. ryan, thank you very much. the fbi probe into russian election meddling is hitting close to home for president trump. cnn has learned investigators are now looking at the president's son-in-law jared kushner. cnn's joe johns is live at the white house. >> reporter: good morning, alisyn. jared kushner played many roles. mr. fix-it and member of the first family and now first person currently in the trump white house under scrutiny. it is not believed he is a target of the russia

investigation. president trump's son-in-law and most trusted adviser. >> he is very good at politics. >> reporter: now a focus of the fbi investigation into russia meddling into the 2016 election. officials tell cnn the bureau is looking into a range of topics related to kushner. a key campaign strategy. meetings held with russian officials and relationship with now ousted national security adviser michael flynn. no indication that kushner is a target of the probe and no allegation of wrongdoing. interests of data and lalytics t the trump campaign targeted voters in states critical to the victory. investigators are examining whether russian operatives were able to piggyback on the effort with help from trump associates knowingly or unknowingly to help with the russian operation. to push information online aimed at helping trump and hurting

hillary clinton. kushner is one of four associates and one under the white house under scrutiny for having contact with sergei kislyak. he met with kislyak and the head of the russia bank with close ties to vladimir putin and currently under u.s. sanctions. >> jared did a job during the campaign and a conduit. >> reporter: meetings where kushner left off security clearance forms. >> he met with the banker he needs to explain. >> reporter: kushner's lawyer noted that kushner previously volunte volunteered to share with congress. he will do the same if contacted with any other inquiry. another point of inquiry, point of influence with flynn. kushner and ivanka pushed to

hire flynn after the election. it is not clear if the fbi plans to talk to kushner. investigators believe he would be able to help provide information to assist the probe. the spokesperson said kushner was unaware of the fbi interest and the bureau hasn't contacted him. john and alisyn. >> thank you, joe. let's discuss with the panel. david gregory and phil mudd and editor for real clear politics, a.b. stoddard. >> we learned this doesn't just cover the campaign and the campaign advisers. now it reaches into the white house. what is the significance? >> the last point. it reaches to the white house. jared kushner emerged as the president's most important adviser and also family. those authority goes in multiple directions and who has business

interests that raise real questions on behalf of the trump family that could have made the campaign vulnerable to being compromised by the russians. again, we don't know what all the facts are so we wait for investigation. we know through kushner's attorney he is happy to talk to all investigators. i think we can make a broader point right now about the attitude vulnerability. cavalier attitude by the trump campaign. russia is not going to do anything to us. there is something of concern here and kushner appears to be the person who had enough contact and meetings or knows enough to be able to really help investigators or though he is not a target right now, that can always change. he seems to be in position to help investigators find out where some of the vulnerability was because he was responsibility for a lot of the data and analytics of the

campaign which is where breaches could occur. >> phil mudd, we can tell by the serious look on your face, you have been involved in investigations. perhaps into the like this. what does it mean they are focusing on jared kushner, but not a target and as of now, no allegations of wrongdoing. that last point that david brought up. the data he ran during the campaign is an area where they want to question. >> let's take two pieces. the first piece is there has been an investigation under way since last summer. jared kushner obviously deeply involved with the campaign close to the president and close to the people we discussed for months, including general flynn and met with the russians. the surprise here, john, if he was never of interest in the investigation. yes, this has come into the white house. kushner obviously is going to be questioned by the fbi. one other quick point on why he hasn't been questioned yet. i have been questioned in investigations before. i watched in investigations.

when the bureau walks into the room, they don't want to walk in without knowing answers. they want to know where he traveled and where the money is and what others say about his involveme involvement. when they walk in the door and ask questions, half the time they need to know the answer. they want to see what he says. they want to box him. i would not expect to see him questioned early on. they are collecting a ton of data before they walk through the door. >> a.b., when i hear the term data analytics, i fall asleep. this is fascinating. if you dive into what jared kushner was able to accomplish during the election, he was instrumental in helping president trump win. he figured out through, i guess, social media, and sales of donald trump merchandise, the make america great caps, there was a vulnerable in the great blue wall and it could crumble and sent trump to michigan and as we know, it worked.

so explain how it is possible there was a nexus with the russian data program and they may have piggybacked on what jared kushner was doing? >> i think jared and the team lucked into a way to use that data to realize that wisconsin and michigan instead of becoming automatically becoming a blue state on november 8th, were fertile ground for donald trump by selling hats and t-shirts. this is a place to target resources and social media campaign. in the end, it was helpful, obviously on the ground to the campaign in addition to just being a savvy operation. where it comes into connection with a russian data operation, of course, we know the russians were doing their own campaign on

social media to promote negative hillary stories and positive trump stories. whether or not the data analytics operation that jared kushner was helping run was a partner and if they were hacked into and an unwilling collusion. we are yet to find that out. that sounds obviously like a very dramatic question. it is the thing that would -- it makes sense in terms of the question of collusion. what was michael flynn doing with the russians if people suspect him of collusion? the data operation seems to make the most sense if there is evidence of collusion. >> phil, how can you be unwittingly influenced by the russians. >> you will not walk through the

front door and say would you like to work for russian intelligence. you can ask questions. this campaign process is interesting. help me understand the places as a.b. was talking about where hillary clinton was vulnerable. that may influence the russian campaign. you see this countless times in the spy business. it is not about recruiting people knowing they are working for you. it is recruiting people who don't. that is the path that is important. >> david gregory, from russia to montana. the candidate who was caught on audio tape and by witnesses, assaulting a reporter won. he is now going to congress. what are we to make of what happened with greg gianforte? >> it didn't have a impact. is that because voters weighed this and said it wasn't important enough to punish him

and vote against him or because of the absentee process where votes have come in and can't be changed and tilted in his way. i don't think we can know ever how that shakes out. i thought gianforte's apology was appropriate. i thought it was late. i'm surprised he waited until after the election. it looks like he had the appearance to see how it went first. you know, he did the right thing. he will still face a misdemeanor assault charge in court. that is appropriate. this is outrageous to attack a reporter asking a question. it shows he is not ready for primetime if he wants to be congress member dealing with policy. you know, you have the house speaker paul ryan who spoke about this appropriately. he said this never happened. obviously. so many obvious points about this. i think it is so unfortunate you

>> good morning. >> we have so much news to get to. let's start with the latest of the russia investigation. now cnn has learned that federal investigators are looking into the president's top adviser and son-in-law jared kushner. jared kushner says he knows nothing of the investigation and has not been contacted by the fbi or any other investigators. how big is this? >> it feels like another day, another name. it is hard to find who in the administration is not being connected with suspicious ties to russia. it just points out how important the investigation is and we have to get to the bottom of it for the american people and make sure it never happens again. our greatest enemy doesn't try to influence our elections. that means democrats and republicans have to come together. i have been calling for independent bipartisan 9/11 style commission into what is going on.

>> why doesn't the appointment of robert mueller cut it? >> that is a good question. there is a role for a special prosecutor here. the role of the special prosecutor is to determine the punishment for what went on. if we want to get the full am answers for the american people and congress, we need an independent visicommission. that is why we had one after 9/11. it is why we had one in other instances where our national security and democracy are under assau assault. >> you don't think the congressional investigations, committees that are happening right now or robert mueller will get to the bottom of it? >> they each have a role. it is important to understand the roles. the congressional committees are all controlled by republicans. the intelligence committees, a lot of findings will be classified. won't be disclosed to the american people. the sad thing is the more we talk about the illicit ties with

the trump administration and russia, we are not talking about the things that trump promised to do for the american people. including the things that democrats agree. investing in infrastructure. last week was infrastructure week. we never talked about that. we were talking about who the next name to fall was in the investigation on ties to russia. it is time we get back to the work of the american people and do the things that the people actually elected donald trump to do. >> i want to read a tweet you sent a week ago and get you to explain what it means. you said just came out of the house briefing by the deputy ag, rod rosenstein. it renewed my confidence we should have no confidence. >> it was what he didn't say. he hardly answered any questions. he did not give us any confidence in the investigation. look, this is a deputy attorney general who appointed robert

mueller to be special prosecutor. he is trying to do the right thing here, but we were very disappointed he wasn't forthright with us when we had closed session. it was behind closed doors. we were asking in a confidence setting. we expected honest answers. the most important questions, he refused to answer. that doesn't give you confidence that the administration doesn't have something to hide. i think that is the biggest thing about the investigation. it is really hard at this point to believe that there's not something going on when the administration is trying so hard to cover up. >> what questions would he not answer? >> it was a closed session. i will respect that. you can imagine what our questions were about regarding the memo that he wrote regarding the firing of the fbi director comey and motivations behind him writing that memo. i'll be respectful of the fact it was closed session.

that is why i wrote the tweet. we went in to have honest conversation with the deputy attorney general with the idea he would set our minds at ease and give us confidence they will get to the bottom of what is going on here. instead, refusal to answer questions just left us with more questions and uncertainty. >> i want to ask about the president's foreign trip. what did you think of his words and tone with nato telling nato allies they need to pay their fair share of fees? >> you know, when i was serving in iraq under commanding general mattis, who is now our secretary of defense, we had a motto in the marines. it was called no better friend. no worst enemy. marines will fight you tooth and nail if you are enemy. you will find no other worsen my in the world. we will stand by our allies. nato has been the most important

allies of the last 50 years. they came to oppose communism and stand together in front of the iron kur tacurtain. the fact that the president doesn't respect those allies. more warmth to vladimir putin and his cronies and more warmth to the saudis. it is opposite of no better friend. it is saying we will cozy up to the enemies and abandon our friends. that is not a smart foreign policy and not a strong foreign policy for the united states. >> quickly, do you have any advice for your new house colleague greg gianforte who just won in montana? >> yes. if you can't handle tough questions from a reporter, you will have a real tough time handling questions from constituents. his job is an elected representative in our democracy. there is no more important

we have a development to tell you of in the manchester terror attack. the officials say the suicide bomber spoke to his brother in libya minutes before the attack. senior correspondent clarissa ward is in manchester with the latest. clarissa. >> reporter: alisyn, the brother and father of the suicide bomber had been detained in tripoli, libya, by militia. the brother reportedly telling the militia that he spoke to salman abedi just 15 minutes

before he went on to kill 22 people at the manchester arena. the brother said he didn't know the specifics of the attack. didn't know what the target was, but he was aware his brother was plotting a terror attack here in the united kingdom. meanwhile, raids had been going on throughout the night and morning as the police try to drill down on the network that would very likely facilitated the attack. they are trying to find who made the bomb. an scorccording to explosive ex at cnn, the bomb is made with high level of sophistication. they do not believe abedi could have made it without help. they are trying to find out if there is a bombmaker and larger isis network on the loose here in the uk.
