viewers here to united states and around the world. >> thanks for joining us. this is cnn ne"cnn newsroom." u.s. attorney general jeff sessions has offered to testify before the senate intelligence committee tuesday. >> sessions is skipping a different hearing on the justice department's budget, he said that he offered to resign over tensions with the president, donald trump about his decision to recuse himself. >> session's appearance haven't been worked out just yet. >> hi, there, it's going to be up to the senate intelligence committee to decide whether to allow to testify on tuesday and whether to have that session be open to the public or closed to the public, according to reporting by my colleague, this

request by sessions to testify caught the committee by surprise. that's why we haven't gotten immediate definitive answers about their plan. we also know from the reporting that there are some on the committee who are concerned that sessions may be trying to avoid testifying publicly. among those concerned is the vice chairman of the committee, the top democrat, senator mark warner of virginia. another democrat on the committee is concerned about this widen. he has sent a letter to the chairman and vice chairman of the committee asking that any session with sessions be open to the public and, of course, we know that there are a lot of questions that congressional investigators have for the attorney general when they do get a chance to question him among them -- in the firing of comey of james comey as fbi director. we know that comey said he believes he was fired because of his handling of the russia investigation and, of course,

sessions was suppose to have recused himself from the russia investigation. that is just one of many questions we expect congressional investigators to have for the attorney general, but the main question right now is when he'll testify and whether we'll be able to watch it. back to you. >> thank you. the u.s. president still lashing out at the former fbi director james comey for his senate testimony. he's lashing out on twitter. "i believe the james comey leaks will be far more prevalent than anyone ever thought possible, totally illegal? very cowardly!" he says. >> he testified he leaked memos of his conversations with the president hoping it would trigger the appointment of a special prosecutor in the russia probe, at least one republican should focus his attention elsewhere. >> you may be the first president in history to go down because you can't stop inappropriately talking about an

investigation that if you just were quiet would clear you. my advice every time you're talking about jim comey and not the american people and their desires and their hopes and their dreams, you're making a mistake. >> to talk more about the political week ahead is ellis, he's a political analyst and the arthur author of the trump's american column. the attorney general plans to testify before the senate intelligence committee. but the big question now will it be private or public regardless, he'll face some serious questions about whether there might have been a third encounter with russian officials an encounter he didn't disclose, how serious is this for jeff sessions. >> serious. he had a rough week last week, reports of disputes with the president, james comey, and darkly about other connections that the attorney general may have with the probe of russian hacking of last year's election,

and you're right, now was some fresh hits about yet another meeting with this russian ambassador that may be the ag had forgotten to mention. so rough, tough last week and maybe a rougher this one. >> through james comey's testimony last week, it became clear, these questions about whether jeff sessions is able to stand up to his boss, according to comey's testimony. >> well, it is true. you know, that's a lot on that, trump camp calling comey a coward, others wondering where the sessions had the gupmp shun to stand oup to donald trump. he was the first senator to be in favor of donald trump during the election. he seemed to be leading the charge for tough immigration laws, but boy that has sure evaporated amid all the talk of russia. >> you mentioned the branding from president, he took to

twitter. branding comey as cowardly over the weekend, millions will watch this testimony of james comey and what are the optics, is the question to you. what are the optics if it comes to simple he said she said between the president and former fbi director and who do believe. >> well, i've got to tell you. i mean, the evidence shows that comey, despite some controversial aspects of some of his decisions, is a man struck most people having a fairmont of integrity. the president, you know, that's a bit of a more complicated question. i think if it's monoy mono between the two of them, comey may come out on top. >> there's conclusion between trump administration team. there's also the investigation into whether the president himself obstructed justice, so several different angles that are going through here, but as we see, jeff sessions stepped

into testify here, what are the big takeaways. what are you looking for? >> well, i mean, you want to hear his answers to the questions about his contacts with the russian ambassador. you want to know about the details of his interaction with the president and you want to know, did he see anything or pick up any vibes about the president trying to end this investigation of general flynn and others who may have been colluding with the russians. sessions was in a position to know about a lot of that stuff, boy, it sure would be nice to know what's going on in his head. the last question to you here, the president has been very coy about whether or not tapes exist, whether he would have recorded some of the conversations that he had in the oval office, understand now that members of the house intelligence committee, they want those tapes, if they do exist. so if they do exist, how big of

a problem could this be for the 45th president or could this, in fact, help him? >> everybody wants them. not just the congressman, the special counsel wants them, i sure would like to get my ears around those tapes. to me, what's interesting is not only the potential comey conversations if the tapes exist, but what else was taped. wouldn't you love to hear a second by second report of what's going on inside all of these conversations with the new pedestrian. i'll tell you a lot of people, they'll be very revealing if they exist, big emphasis on exist. >> tapes don't work out so well, so obviously we'll have to see if they exist and do these either help or hurt the president. ellis, it's good to have you with us. >> good seeing you. well, president trump could soon face new legal troubles. the attorney's general for

maryland and the district of columbia say they'll announce a lawsuit against the president on monday. >> according to the washington post, they claim he accepted millions of dollars in payments and benefits from foreign governments through his businesses after taking office, that will violate anticorruption clauses in the constitution. >> the president said in january, he would turn over management of his business assets to his sons to avoid possible conflicts of interest. the british prime minister's office said there has been no change to the invitation from queen elizabeth to u.s. president donald trump. the guardian reported he was planning to delay a state visit to the uk. the white house also denies report, it claims mr. trump was uneasy over his perceived unpopularity in britain. >> opposition leader, jeremy corbyn had this to say on twitter, cancellation of president trump's statement visit is welcomed, especially

that's because of the disastrous results of the election and her forced to seek a very small party, many here are predicting earlier elections, the elections sooner rather than later, that includes labor leader who spoke at the bbc andrew mark. >> i think it's quite possible, and quite possible to win an election later this year or early next year. that might be a good thing. we have a program. we have support when they're ready to fight another election campaign as soon as may be, because we want to be able to serve the people of this country. >> the problem now is that may has to balance a number of competing interest within her own party to remain in party, to continue to govern comes at critical time for her with brexit negotiations only one week away. she may have to soften her hard brexit approach.

to shift that approach to remain where she is and to keep governing for now. it seems she has that support, for how much longer, george, that right now is the key question. >> well, let's go right into that question or because again we're days away from these brexit negotiations. the reason we understand for the press association is set to finalize, we have a meeting and finalize an agreement, confidence and supply agreement with the dup, here is the question. will it be theresa may at the table? >> it may very well be prime minister may at that table negotiating with the dop to make this work. doesn't look like it will be coalition formation but support. the problem is the support of the democratic union introduces a number of awkward positions and awkward pressures. the antigay and antiabortion, it's made some of the liberals uncomfortable. on top of that. there are power sharing negotiations between republicans

and the unionist in northern ireland. it was the uk that was impartial, agreeing with the union makes that no longer. >> that would be the question, obviously, an alliance and any sort of alliance would have broader implications throughout northern ireland, lieberman live outside number ten, thank you for the reporting, we'll stay in touch. joining me now to talk more about this is james, he's the washington correspondent for the economist. thank you so much for being with us. theresa may has completed a shuffle, but her rival journey called the labor party seems to think there will be another election and just how tenuous is this and do you think he's right? >> well, he is extraordinarily -- it's not clear that he's nailed down an agreement with the dup and

unionist party to support important tour elections in the house of common, that's her ambition, if we have to see that punitive agreement nailed down yet. also, the same time, great resting within the conservative party. it's lots extremely unhappy for costing the majority government for humiliating the party, for reopening the wounds of -- and now, furious on the eve of the country and getting the negotiation. >> prime minister may, is negotiating with no violence in the party. how likely is it that this will keep a conservative's in power, do you think?

>> i think the negotiations strung out, will be prepared to give some sort of commitment according to legislation, what they do in the bargaining and they could get it expect, i think shiny new roads. and such is the cover of british democracy right now. now more than ever, on the eve of this extraordinarily important negotiation to lead the european union. >> i want to talk about that, minister may says her government plans to focus on social issues and delivering success for brexit. it's going to be difficult and rocky road. what are some of the major challenges that face her now, particularly. >> deciding what she gets it asked for. this assumes, of course, she can remain the prime minister by being certain.

the general election that she called was -- the to support the hard line that she had outlined whereby the absolutely priority to control immigration and the britain were going to be hard headed about, therefore theresa may was committed to leaving the customs union, single mom market. which given the importance that she has this issue immigration. it remains to be seen how hard we continue to push that. certainly we see right now, other voices within the government, asserting themselves

and saying this will not do. you don't have a mandate to push this absolutist view of brexit. they don't realize the economy that would come. or any of brexit to discuss within the government or within the party to, perhaps, reassert the importance of the economy over rather narrower issue of controlling the borders which was very much the own position on this. >> very quickly, if theresa may doesn't survive, what's plan b, who is standing right behind her ready to step in. >> if she doesn't survive, it's because she brought down by the party. that assumes that she sticks together the agreement with the

democratic unionist party of northern ireland. assume she can stitch together such an agreement and yet she's brought down. it's because there was a leadership challenge. >> the man would rally around just now. there's a bit of alternatives. so i think that ensure, who that would be, would be very much determined by the terms of the brexit negotiation of the party, swung behind whether this may vision, this hard line vision, to get control over our borders and down the cost, or the run of the more pragmatic ambition for brexit, which is outlined by such figures, we must do the

minimum damage to get away, after all voters told us they wanted last year. it is so dramatic. it's with such enormous tradition. such consequence only down in the next five years but in the latter, over the next decade. things are working out on the fly, which doesn't have a majority for its government and dagger with its own leader. >> james, thank you so much for joining us. we'll appreciate and watch very closely to see what happens. >> cutting up all diplomatic relations, arrived on sunday, also clinching a day. >> the blockade has led many to

it's almost the calm before the storm. this is an image taken a few hours ago by one of the viewers. you can see some of the cumulus clouds in the distance, well everything is fine, right. unfortunately not, we anticipate the winds to pick up and winds to pick up and it will be vather uncomfortable. we have the annual -- that are brought us the flooding over the past 48 hours, but also, now, we have this rapidly developing tropical storm in the south china sea, that will make land fall, again, within the next ten hours, about 100 kilometers just to the east and we have wind of 75 kilometers or i will wake up with the storm that can intensify further before making it. around midnight local time. we'll keep a close eye on that, it's still a big rain maker, they'll be a threat going

forward for eastern china over the next 24 to 48 hours. now the other big story, here is in the united states, the big time heat that has been plaguing the eastern seaboard, including new york city. we have potential to break 15 record highs, including new york city and with this heat comes a very stagnant air mass. we have an area of high pressure that works to actually trap the heat, we get this radiation coming off of the ground, but it also traps the pollution, unfortunately, across some of the major cities. that's where we get the steak and that can become very dangerous of people sensitive as asthmatics or heavily. look at these temperatures for the nation's capitol. we broke record highs and continues to warm from here. but big changes in store for the second half of the week. that is the thermometer starts to take a nose dive. it is june, right. >> yeah. >> don't like it. >> yeah, thanks so much.
