lot of food for thought. let's discuss it with analyst april ryan and alex burns. he said you guys in the media, you keep falling for these things. the president tweets out. just don't cover it. just don't touch t he would not spell out -- i asked him which of the president's statements we are to take seriously and which we're supposed to dismiss do. we have an answer to that? >> no, i don't. and i think the way you sort of prosecuted that question with the congressman and the way you just outlined it now points to the inherent disingenuousness of the argument made on the other side, this idea that the president can say whatever he wants and then pick and choose which elements we're supposed to take seriously. that's not how it works when you're the president of the united states or candidate for the president of the united states. i do think, look, republicans have done a masterful job so far
5:06 am
of picking and choosing what they want to respond to that the president says. laughing off certain kinds of things, condemning the tweets last week about mika brzezinski, saying very little over the weekend about the video that was tweeted that was, in some ways, much more violent. but that's not a luxury that the media has. frankly, i don't know that it's a luxury that republicans have indefinitely. when you see poll after poll showing voters think is this is harmful to the president, bad for the country you need to draw a line. >> the president almost on cue has been writing about what he's doing today almost as if to send the message i'm working, doing the nation's business. i'm going to be speaking with italy this morning, germany and france this morning. he spoke with leaders in saudi arabia over the weekend, april ryan. they're trying to say look at all these things he's doing. it's hard to separate when what he does with who he is. part of the problem is that we get a window to who he is, the
5:07 am
president of the united states, the leader of the free world, with some of the other statements he has been making over the last 48 hours. >> john, yesterday i guess he was modern presidential with that tweet and today he was traditional presidential. john, we have peeped into or peered into this president's mind-set behavior for a very long time. since he was running for president and even before. for some it does not surprise them. even last week when the tweet came out about joe and mika, you know, the rationale from the podium in the white house briefing room of sarah huckabee sanders was people knew who they were getting. what is really at stake and i haven't really heard this in the conversations today or yesterday. you know, you have so many people talking about the constitution and the writes of the constitution, but no one is getting at the point that this is challenging the democracy, challenging the first amendment. and now you're throwing in violence.
5:08 am
and it was shocking to see what the homeland security adviser said yesterday to martha radditz. it's clear it's violence if you hit someone, pummel someone, that's violence. and it had a cnn logo it was violence against a media outlet. and people are listening. and i just pray that it does not crescendo into something bigger than this. this president has influence, even though he has very low poll numbers and his disapproval rating is very high, he still has influence over that certain sector that believes he's genuine and feels like they are him. >> you're in the halls of congress every day, as we discussed. for all the congress people who were so rightly appalled and sickened with what happened with steve scalise and opening fire at that republican baseball game, is this the unity that they called for after that
5:09 am
event? is this the lowering of the rhetoric? >> clearly not. this goes to the difference between what members of congress were feeling very genuinely because it was an attack on their fellow members of congress versus what the president seems to have said and then forgotten about several hours later. but going back to another point you were just discussing with april, i think that this is -- the president is doing this and he's directing his fury at the media with punches in this video, as we've seen. we're criticizing him because of that. at the same point, we are not spending the same amount on the air criticizing various details of the policies being debated in congress right now, health care bill that the president is pushing, we didn't talk about the travel ban last week because we're talking about these tweets. in that regard, yes, it is something that clearly is needing to be scrutinized but it plays better with his base than we might otherwise be doing with this time. in that way, yes, it's shocking
5:10 am
what he's saying. it's shocking to members of congress. it's shocking to washington, d.c. it's not what anybody wanted. it might be what the president wants, less negative coverage for what he's doing as president, take the negative coverage what he's doing as a person. it doesn't play that poorly with his base, as it didn't during the campaign. >> it's an interesting strategy if, in fact, it is a strategy and if it is, in fact that, deliberate. who knows. i want to remind people what the president of the united states did say after the steve scalise shooting, welcomed healing remarks in that moment. take a listen. >> we may have our differences but we do well in times like these to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because, above all, they love our country. we can all agree that we are blessed to be americans, that

oklahoma city bombing, president bush after 9/11, so many mass shootings where the president seemed to rise above everything that was divisive and it made the country small. and president trump in that moment, i think you have to say, was one of the most pitch perfect of public appearances of his presidency. and if he had been able to extend that into other elements as his performance as president and conduct in his office, i think it would be harder for his critics and opponents to go after him. >> a big week for the president. he will be meeting with various world leaders at the g-20 and first face-to-face meeting with vladimir putin. the white house is not planning to bring up election meddling with putin. it's hard to imagine he wouldn't bring up the elephant in the room. what do you think we can expect this week? >> well, one thing about this president, as people are saying,
5:13 am
he's genuine. i believe he will be true to himself and he doesn't necessarily follow the scripts that they offer him. we'll see what he says. but i can definitely say that national security, as they have in the past, and those who work with intelligence, are briefing him. we know that in the past there are always three topics that the president and the president of russia would talk about. these side bar conversations would have three topics and we assume right now the three topics that they are prepping him for would be syria, north korea and the ukraine, especially since he met with the leader of ukraine recently. who knows what this president will talk about. when he was in the oval office not long ago with the russian ambassador, he talked about -- this president does not have

this morning, cnn is learning about the president's agenda at the g0. he plans to talk about syria, ukraine but not the russian meddling into the 2016 election. do you know whether president trump will bring up russia's meddling with president putin? >> trying to predict president trump is a fool's errand. i have to assume there will be a lot of discussion about syria, which will be very important, referencing the situation in ukraine, also pretty dire. i have very little confidence that the president will bring up the russian attack on our voting system last november. he denies it considered then
5:20 am
blames on democrats. and vladimir putin is saying i got away with that if the president dos doesn't lay down a tough marker we'll see this again. >> if he doesn't bring it up, whats to that tell you? >> he has had a blindfold on when it comes to russia. he will criticize the cast of hamilton, your show and other countries but not russia. this is a question many of us involved in the investigation have, why is there this blind spot? with respect to the hack he has been all over the place on it. it didn't occur. it's a big hoax. then he seemed to acknowledge it occurred. i have no idea how he will approach this with vladimir putin. i'm pretty sure if he doesn't
5:21 am
completely change his tune the message to putin will be we got away with it. >> it's possible if they want russia's help in syria and fighting isis that they don't want to, obviously, poison the well with talking about bringing up russian meddling. >> well, yes, but these meetings have been going on for as long as we've been a country. whenever you sit down with somebody like the russians, like the chinese, there's an agenda and a couple of tough things on that agenda and a couple of areas where we work together. it's certainly true of the chinese and true of the russians. russians are critical in helping us enforce the iran nuclear agreement. the russians were critical to that deal and it took a major national security threat off the table. this is not a new thing.
5:22 am
there are tough discussions in these meetings and then areas of common ground. >> we understand that you may be interviewing michael caputo, former communications adviser to the trump campaign. can you tell us anything? >> we're working hard to keep the actual day-to-day activities quiet. we want toem poo come in front of us voluntarily. we think it's important that they be able to come and speak frankly behind closed doors unless we do open hearings, which i expect you'll hear more of. i don't want to get into individual witnesses other than to tell you, alison, the pace has picked up dramatically. interviews are happening every week. we are getting good information, reviewing documents. so, things are going pretty well. where this all leads, you know, still early to say.
5:23 am
but the investigation is proceeding well. >> do you have any response to what the president tweeted where he retweeted this video of wrestle mania where he's punching somebody with a cnn logo on his head to the ground? >> we approach the fourth of july, our national holiday where we celebrate the freedoms and liberties that we have. pretty much every other president before this one has understood that the media is absolutely essential to our liberty. the media is tough sometimes, is unfair. look how they acted in the turn of the century. absolutely. but every other president has understood that the first amendment and freedom of the press is the first amendment for
5:24 am
a reason. which is that media is an important thing. dictators attack the media. just the outrageous, divisive, quasi nra video we saw come out, i question where is this country going? does it have any leadership that has any idea what the real meaning of freedom and liberty is? >> have the calls for unity so prevalent after the terrible steve scalise shooting, the calls for ratcheting down the rhetoric, have those gone way in congress? >> they haven't gone away in congress. remember, when the president put up his tweets criticizing mika on morning joe, you saw most republicans saying that kind of language and that kind of disgusting personal attack has no place in our politics. actually, congress remains sort
5:25 am
of partisan and divide place. but when it comes to sort of the basics, we're pretty united. why the president can go from calling for civility shortly after the shooting of steve scalise to disgustingly characterizing mika brzezinski and then, of course -- i feel like i'm in a roadrunner or bugs bunny cartoon, putting up that video. this man is the most powerful person in the world, president of the united states and this is what he is doing? i'll tell you, that unites congress more than it divides it. >> congressman jim himes, have a nice holiday. thank you so much for being with us. >> thanks, allison. >> you heard it right there. the president is ramping up his attacks on the media. he posted that video, showing him body slamming cnn. did it go too far? does that make america better? we'll discuss next.
5:30 am
destroyed themselves because they went too far. instead of being subtle and smart, they used a hatchet. and the people saw it right from the beginning. >> that was a veterans' event over the weekend, by the way. not long after the president accused of media of using a hatchet, he showed himself a video as part of the escalating war on the media. how far is too far? ben ferguson, media stars in their own right as far as pro wrestling officials. i'll start with this question, ben. how does what the president is doing, these tweets about the media, wrestling video, how does it make america better? >> i think, one, you've got to
5:31 am
look at this specifically from one issue. was it worth it? are these tweets worth it when it comes to pushing your legislative agenda? certainly you could make the argument that it's not worth it because it takes the focus off the things that the president has been accomplishing over the last week. i will say this. sometimes people actually need to have a little bit of a sense of humor and not take themselves too seriously and overreact and try to turn this into a bigger issue than it really is. let's look at the tweet. takes seven seconds to tweet it out. it's a little self depricating, showing donald trump doing fake wrestling, which everyone knows is fake. he saw it, thought it was funny. after a week when he thought people at cnn were being unfair to him that had to resign, therefore, he tweeted it out. people are trying to overplay this saying he's inciting violence. it's a fake wrestling video. don't take yourself so seriously. have a little fun with it. enjoy the holiday weekend and not try to make this into something much bigger than it
5:32 am
really was. >> bakari? >> the problem with that is that not everyone sees it as just some funny video. like ben may see it or even myself may see t you can't look at this in isolation. have you to look at this in a totality. this is not anything new. this is the same donald trump that was campaigning, doing his rallies saying knock them out. if you accidentally hurt them i'll pay your legal bills, having people punched at his rallies and saying in the old days we used to take them out back. this is the same person. he hasn't changed one bit. this isn't some coordinated distraction from a legislative agenda, which is stalled, which has no major victories. this is just who he is. the problem, though, is that of his 35% of support there may be one or two people who go out there and act at this behest. this is beneath the dignity of the office and donald trump has to be extremely careful with his words, something he doesn't know how to do. >> ben ferguson you, yourself, say this may not be helping to
5:33 am
promote your agenda. what's your advice to the president on this? >> i've always said this. i've worked on campaigns. simply put, is it worth it or was it worth it, what you just said or what you just tweeted out. last week was a great example. the "morning joe" distraction unfortunately took away the focus of some laws that the majority of americans were unaware that he got passed. kate's law is a perfect example. it was not talked about because they were talking about the tweets. that tweet probably wasn't worth it. the president has to look at this and say, hey, are these tweets really able to keep me focused? i'm not talking about him personally. i think he can do both at the same time. are they keeping the focus on the agenda that i'm pushing and people elected me to be the president to push forward? i'll also say this about this last tweet. there are so many people that have such disdain in the media for the president and assess very clear. he's going to say little fun with them. they don't like him and want to destroy them. when you send out something like this, some of the media take
5:34 am
themselves too seriously, think they're more important than the average american person. the fact is this was actually kind of just funny. and people need to learn to have a sense of humor in politics. dial down the crazy and not overreact to something that is fake wrestling. that's what it is. it's literally fake wrestles. >> it did stem, this video, with the doctored thing, with the cnn logo stemmed from an account, a man or woman with anti-semitic tweets, anti-muslim tweets. that's where the video came from. >> right but i don't think he got it from him. i think it was going long before -- >> it doesn't matter. >> that's the source. that's the source. is it just fun, bakari, when the source of it is someone who also posts anti-semitic and anti-muslim things? >> that's crazy part of this entire conversation. sometimes you feel like you're in the twilight zone, whether you're talking to a president trump supporter or anyone on the street. he took the post from an

anti-semitic punk on reddit and took it out there from the world to see from his presidential handle. let's play the what if this was barack obama game. people had a fit because the man used dijon mustard because he wore a tan suit. they made up these little fake media spectacles. now you have a president of the united states who is literally out there, pummeling the media, using a military backdrop to actually blast the media, when the media are the group of people who dig deep into the va scandals, who make sure that our military men and women get the coverage and care that they need. i'm trying to figure out why it's okay for donald trump to have a bar of expectation that comes up to my knee when we often times, as we should, hold the president up to a higher standard. it's just unjust. >> bakari, i love you, but this is one you're stretching. people tweet things all the time and retweet them and copy and paste them. now you're trying to -- >> we're not talking about people. zblet me at least just -- let me
5:36 am
finish, okay? there are many things i'm sure you have tweeted that probably started somewhere, from someone that maybe you wouldn't agree with politically because people copy and paste things and then they try to make their own -- >> hang on. i want to say one thing. then you can finish. this is the official white house twitter account. yes, he did it from real donald trump but also from the white house twitter account. >> correct. >> official governmental account that we're seeing from an anti-semite. go. >> this is the perfect example of what i'm saying. you're overplaying something that when the president saw it, probably thought it was just funny for a moment and literally spent seven seconds of his life to retweet something that was fake wrestles. now people trying to make it into some sort of conspiracy theory or some sort of -- he got it from somebody that was sending it out that was anti-semitic that was way down the list there. don't take it so seriously. have fun on the fourth of july

5:53 am
you think by now maybe people mo live in the white house would learn something, dealing with vladimir putin. it's possible that trump could surprise us. he has shown, at times, an ability to act rather conventional. he did that on his middle eastern trip. so, maybe he gets into a room and says what you're doing in ukraine is a no go and you've got to start calming down in syria. but i don't know if that is what we should expect based on how he has talked about russia and the way he seems to have his own ideas about a russian reset three. but this is probably the biggest news of the week. because russia continues to be our biggest geopolitical adversary on the political stage at the moment. >> all kinds of preparation for the middle east and trip to europe, which was not quite as, you know, controversy free as the middle eastern trip. we don't know if there's quite as much preparation for this. we'll have to wait and see. one of the questions is, david, can the white house, can the president stay on message this
