"new day" starts now. chris cuomo reporting live from florida. we'll see you next week. . all right. welcome to you in the united states and around the world. this is "new day." it's friday, september 8. 6:00 here in miami. we are following breaking news, of course, and all eyes are on hurricane irma. she is coming right to where we are at this hour. the storm is scarring every place she touches in the

caribbean. cuba is next in its path. we'll show you the predictions. we have the best proof of what she's done so far. chad myers is going to show you the track we know right now. i'm being qualified about it because the closer the storm gets, the less hope there is for a shift. there's still variables. right now florida is under a hurricane warning. it's looking like a category 4. that's 155-mile-an-hour sustained winds. gusts can go higher. the models call for a hit somewhere in south florida. there seems to be a west early shift. that could be a good thing. we'll take you through the possibilities. again, this could be the last tranquil morning you see in south florida for some time. every man and woman, every official and first responder is pleading with those in evacuation areas to get out now. those sheltering in place, the message is clear. have a plan.

have supplies for 72 hours. that's three days. take a look at the map. you can see where the mandatory and voluntary evacuation centers are in florida. just because your county may not have an evacuation order in place right now, it doesn't mean there's not going to be one by tomorrow. be ready to have to move. keep checking. there's lots of places online, look at our website if you need help. a lot of people are getting out of dodge. cars are obviously heading north. florida's governor shutting down offices, schools, colleges, even some hospitals, all closed. why? because of the destructive capabilities of hundred plus might be winds. this spongy area of the state, you can't exaggerate the effect. >> chris, so great to have you on the ground to tell us what you're seeing and as the conditions change, what you're experiencing there. meanwhile ten people have

already been killed by irma. that number can rise as it hits the more populated area. the monster storm pummelling turks and cake cos. this happened overnight. the wind and torrential rain causing lots and lots of damage. the bahamas and cuba now bracing for impact. they are the next in line to be hit by irma. the red cross says the storm has already battered 1.2 million people, but 26 million more are in its path. as if this all is not bad enough, there's another hurricane on irma's heels. cnn is bringing you up-to-the-minute coverage of irma with meteorologist chad myers. where is it heading? >> it is heading to florida. going to make landfall in the keys. right now it's over crooked island, millibars 955.

this is not a category 1. if you are in the keys, you need to go. if you are in the lower elevations of miami-dade, you need to go. you already have mandatory evacuations. i've seen so many people ride this out and they're always fine. this isn't an always-fine kind of storm. this is a storm that will have a storm surge bubble of 15 to 20 feet. it's already running over the turks and caicos. your house is not safe in the keys. oceanside, bay side, whatever, get out. whatever it takes for you to have to do. the european model is taking it right over the western edge. probably big pine key up to almost cape coral. that's the area that will see the 130 to 140-mile-per-hour winds.

the onshore flow in miami will cause significant storm surge. the player khan model, slightly farther to the east, but still not that much farther, maybe 40 miles getting over about key largo, right through miami proper with 130 to 140-mile-per-hour winds, right where our chris cuomo is. it will be a devastating storm. you need to get away from here. even though you know it's going to go over land. you know what that land is? that land is the everglades. that's not land. that's stillwater. the storm will not slow down that much. even by the time it gets to atlanta, we'll have wind gusts of 45 to 60 miles per hour. the stofrry is surge and wind damage. this isn't harvey, this is moving fast. this moving fast is bad because it's going to push that bubble of water rite through the key, right into homestead, all the way in those areas in the biscayne bay. if you're in ten feet of

elevation of biscayne bay, you need to get out. >> all this eerie familiarity with those areas from andrew back in 199 2, those the memories people fear. the authorities down here thank you, chad saying, because you see the eye going over one area doesn't mean you're not going to be hit. it doesn't have to be a direct hit to be a bad hit. chad, we'll check back with you in a bit. cuba is gearing up for the destructive power of irma. deadly hurricane-force winds especially the northern ridge of that vulnerable island, all in a matter of hours. cnn is there. we have patrick oppmann live in cuba with the latest. my friend, i hope your family is okay. i know you've got to be doing your job. your heart is in that home as well. what are you seeing on the ground? >> reporter: chris, thank you very much.

here in cuba, people are getting ready. tourists have evacuated. cuba has its own keys on the coast full of hotels. usually a pretty season right now. they're all empty. here where cubans live, a lot of people have evacuated. some of the bombshell terse built during the cuban missile crisis. the government is moving hundreds of thousands of people, telling residents that just about everyone on this island will be affected. we still don't know if it's going to be a glancing blow or a direct hit. it will caution devastation here in cuba before heading to florida. >> patrick, we'll check back with you throughout the program. overnight turks and caicos took a direct lit. this is where travis and his new wife were celebrating their

honeymoon. travis, i have been reading about your odyssey of how you tried to figure out how to get off the island. tell us what day you figured out you were in trouble and what you did. >> the day i figured out i was in trouble was on sunday. we started looking at flights to get out of there. we were told don't worry yet. wait until you get evacuated. i was like no, i don't want to wait. i want to get out now. >> right. so then you started calling airlines, calling travel agents, and it felt for a while as if you were trapped. how did you and your wife's vently make it out? >> a lot of coffee. eventually on wednesday, a miracle opened up. there was a flight that showed up. you could get out of there for $1r5 00 a person which is outrageous. we had no choice but to take it. there was a plane that we charter

chartered. now we're stuck in florida and have to get out of florida. i'm happy to be out of there. >> i get it. your odyssey is not over. you need to evacuate florida. a couple days earlier you ladd been offered a different charter flight at 1500 at which point you said that's price gouging, you stood on principle. two days later, i think i'll take it. >> at that point that was our only option. i thought a couple days ago there's got to be other flights. there's no way you have to pay that much to get out of there. it turns out that was our only option. we were happy to leave. we'll worry about the financials later. that's the least of our problems right now. i heard there were people that had to charter a flight and had to pay $5,000 each. i heard about price gouging going on all over the place. >> oh, my gosh. obviously they're preying on people desperate to get to safety. how much of your honeymoon did

you dedicate trying to get out of irma? >> let's say i spent more money getting out of there than i did getting there and on a hotel. it's not recoverable. we're not out of the woods yet. we're happy we have our lives for now. at least we're not like the people in florida who have everything to worry about. i just had to get myself out. these people have homes and everything. i can't imagine the devastation that's going to happen here. >> i know there's this whole planes, trains and automobiles system you have for how you're going to get back to california. what are you looking at? >> literally the same thing. there was no rental cars in florida. i was told you can't even rent a skateboard. we'll take amtrak to orlando, take an uber, get oven a plane there. fly to long beach and uber back home. all these modes of transportation. it's been non-stop trying to get something solid. no one has anything.

you want to be. hurricane irma is heading this way and is expected to make landfall somewhere in south florida this weekend. we see a lot of things shutting down in advance of the storm's arrival. we have cnn's rosa flores live at miami international airport right now. what is the situation there, rosa, and what are you hearing? there are so many stories and concerns about gouging, not being able to get flights and being closed out, stuck at the airport. what are you seeing? >> reporter: frustrations are high here at miami international airport. as operations start winding down. take a look behind me, this is the customer service line. i've talked to multiple people on this line. some received notices overnight saying their flight was canceled. i talked to another couple who said they printed their boarding pass about an hour and a half ago, arrived at the airport only to find out that their flight had been canceled as well. i talked to another gentleman who was in tears because he said

he's going to miss his son's wedding. emotions are very high. american airlines has added 15 flights, delta added 16 flights. it's not enough as people are trying to get out of miami ahead of irma. chris? >> rosa, thank you very much. please keep us apprised. so many are worried about trying to leave because they think they're going to be taken by their both book or not taken where they need to go. let's talk about what the preparations are and what the reality is. we have former director of the florida division of emergency management, david halston. good to have you with us. a little bit of sprinkles coming down on us. this is welcome because it's so muggy down here. let's talk about what's coming. when we look at the path of the storm, we're hearing could

shift, could shift. >> i'm not into vegas odds. you've got to look at the reality and plan for the worse. now we'll hear it's been downgraded to a category 4. a category 4 isn't all that different than a category 5 headed this way. people have to heed evacuation warnings, take precautions and move to a safe shelter. >> andrew, andrew, 1992. i remember it but i didn't live through it. every first responder we've been through, they keep likening what this might be like to that. just for perspective, as you well know and taught me, three category fives have hit this country since the 1800s. andrew the most recent, 1992. i think it hit homestead very hard and went on up. what do you see in this that justifies concerns about it being like andrew? >> well, i look at each hurricane differently. so i don't compare it to andrew. i think this is much worse.

>> worse? but that was a 5. th this is a 4. >> but this is bigger. you see people and residents heeding those evacuation warnings. typically we don't have this kind of response. people have looked at cnn, looked at the weather out there. they know it's coming. they figure let's be safer than sorry. also, the changes that we made since hurricane andrew, the building codes for one thing. south florida put in some of the string jest building codes there are. everything built since hurricane andrew has been built to that standard. >> when people look at south florida, miami proper, they see all the high-rises, all that glass, so vulnerable. these aren't like buildings that you see even in manhattan. how so? >> not built the same way, thicker class, sturdier construction. most have huge backup generators, so they cannot only withstand the storm but be a place to hunker down if need be

if people use that as a last reso resort. >> i will be partnered with you for the duration, probably clenging to you physically for safety. what should people anticipate happening here based on their current predictions? >> the current predictions, which if they come to fruition which they probably will, we'll get rain bands coming in, stronger and stronger winds. it's not going to be safe eventually to even be on the roadways. we'll have to be inside protected because then you'll get the flying debris. >> you basically have a 24-hour window from right now. >> i think right now you've got 24 probably at the max before it's going to be very dangerous even to be outside. >> david, thank you very much. in the know. alisyn, there you have it. you've got 24 hours. now is the time to go. otherwise you've got to have a plan and you have to have

cnn learned that special prosecutor robert mueller is looking for more information about the aftermath of that don trump junior meeting at trump tower with russians. he wants to talk to several staffers who were on board air force one back in june when the first misleading statement about that sit-down was drafted.

cnn's joe johns is live at the white house with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, alisyn. the president has a full plate right now, disaster funding, keeping the government open and operating and north korea. despite all that the president still cannot investigate that investigation into collusion in the 2016 campaign and the russians. >> donald trump jr.'s appearance before the senate judiciary committee prompting a new lead for robert mueller who is now looking to question white house staffer who were aboard air force one about the initial misleading statement trump junior made in regards to the meeting he took with a russian attorney at trum tower. in a five-hour closed-door meeting, the president's son saying he cannot recall exactly how much input the white house had on crafting his statement. that initial statement as we know now drafted in part by

president trump claimed the meeting was about russian adoptions, not opposition research. don junior denying his father had any knowledge of the meeting. >> it was such a nothing, there was nothing to tell. >> reporter: donald trump jr. saying he met with the russian lawyer hoping to get damaging information on clinton saying in a prepared opening statement, to the extent they had information concerning the fitness, character or qualifications of a presidential candidate, i believed that i should at least hear them out. don junior asserting he would have consulted a lawyer had he intended to use such information. later saying i trust this interview fully satisfied their inquiry. some members left unsatisfied, expecting to have don junior back for a public hearing. >> there were huge gaping holes of information that we need to fill. >> reporter: shortly after, democratic senator chris coons e-mailing out a memo about a law that prohibits lying to

congress. coinciding with don junior's testimony, president trump trying to convey unity on capitol hill. >> i think we will have a different relationship than you've been watching over the last number of years. i think that's what the people of the united states want to see. >> continuing to align himself with democrats on fiscal matters this week and leaving the door open to working with democratic leaders on immigration. president trump giving daca recipients reassurance they won't be targeted over the next six months while congress works to pass a dreamer's bill at minority leader nancy pelosi's request. >> i was reporting to my colleagues, that's what i asked the president to do. and boom, boom, boom, the tweet appeared. so that was good. >> reporter: the president, like the rest of the country, is keeping a close eye on the situation in florida. he's expected to have a midday hurricane briefing and will head to camp david for a meeting with his cabinet. >> joe, thank you very much.

let's talk about this with cnn political analyst david gregory. good morning, david. >> good morning. >> we have a lot to talk about. let's start with what it looks like robert mueller was focused on this week and that is, he wants to interview other white house staffers on the plane who watched or listened as that statement was kraftcrafted. it turned out to be a misleading statement about don junior's meeting with the russians. of course robert mueller wants to get to the bottom of it especially since don junior wasn't able to provide many detai details. >> right. you have changing stories about what happened, why he went to the meeting. it was supposed to be about adoptions. then it was about testing for fitness. president trump said anybody would have taken that meeting. there's so much evidence about what the russians were up to, and so many shifting explanations from the white house team, from the trump family, that that's obviously an area of inquiry.

what is related to that is the idea that we know mueller is looking into potential obstruction of justice by the president. the president's own lawyers have argued with the special prosecutor team they should not be investigating that. there are a lot of threads here about whether the president told the truth, whether his family told the truth about what those contacts were at the time between the campaign and russian officials seeking to manipulate the election. >> democrats seized on some of this, possibly overreaching. senator richard blumenthal who sat in on the meeting with staffers. he felt don junior's evasive answers to his mind opened up new lines of inquiry and then senator chris coons, democrat, of course, he sent in not so subtle reminder via twitter about perjury laws. that seems to have gone overboard. you can say you don't remember something, that's not perjury.

>> there's a couple of things that are difficult to reconcile right now, and that is that congress, both the senate getting more attention and the house which is more divided, are pursuing what they're pursuing, doing it publicly and in some cases behind closed doors. there is cooperation with the special prosecutor. we don't know what it adds up to. we don't know what the special prosecutor has and what it all amounts to. so that part gets hard to piece together other than putting a lot of pressure. at the end of the day we're not going to know whether tangible evidence is trying to manipulate the election on the part of the russians equates to anything other than ineptitude, arrogance or bungling on the part of trump officials as opposed to really colluding with the russians to do something specific. >> david, let's talk about this somewhat surreal new bond, new-found friendship between

donald trump and nancy pelosi and chuck schumer. their names to donald trump's base, schumer and pelosi are synonymous with the bogeyman. "the new york times" this morning is reporting how much he's enjoying the media coverage, saying he's forging this new sort of bipartisan spirit. it's impossible obviously to ever predict what president trump will do. this is shaking things up in washington in an interesting way. >> i think there's always been the promise that donald trump is so unpredictable that he would buck his own party, make things uncomfortable for democrats, he'd work with them. he's not an ideologicalperson, not an ideological president. we're seeing some of the evidence of that. that detail in the times this morning that he's watching the coverage and how positive he is that he's calling nancy pelosi and chuck schumer is all you need to know.

it's candy to him, the idea there's good coverage. he wants to be liked in this regard. in that way i don't think we should overread anything. he could make a deal tomorrow in a way that hurts democrats. i do think there's an opportunity to seize on some of these issues, whether it's immigration, not just dreamers, but a broader immigration deal even around taxes. the president wants to get something accomplished this year. and there are real schisms within the republican party, that conservative base that is more and more distinct from donald trump's world view that he may have to turn to democrats. he'll turn wherever he has to in order to get something done. i think what's striking about this week is the conservative movement, a lot of which opposed donald trump in 2016 is finding reason to go its own way beyond the midterms as we get closer to 2020. >> also very quickly, there are real life manifestations of his new found friendship with nancy pelosi. she said she encouraged him to

reassure the dreamers. he tweeted out, for all those daca concerned about your status, you have nothing to worry about. that sounds like a direct outcome of his conversation with nancy pelosi. >> it also suggests he's willing to deal on a stand-alone piece to remedy the dreamer situation, although i'm sure he'd like something broader if he can get it, some republicans are working on that. this is an area of the dreamers whereas much criticism as he's getting. it's not really something he wanted to do. what he really wants to do is put pressure on congress to alleviate the problem. he's signaling certainly to nancy pelosi directly that he'll go along with that. >> david gregory, great to talk to you. >> thanks, alisyn. >> a powerful 8.1 earthquake off the coast of mexico near the border with guatemala has killed at least 15 people and that number is likely to rise. the quake which mexico's

president calls the strongest one in a hundred years collapsed a hotel, damaged homes in mexico and guatemala. also rocking mexico city which is 600 miles way. you can see it shook buildings there, sent worried residents fleeing into darkened streets. 800,000 now without electricity. president trump reiterating that north korea is, quote, behaving badly and it's got to stop. meanwhile the u.s. finished e the employment of four more anti missile intercept systems as that country's prime minister predicts another north korean missile launch tomorrow. cnn's will ripley is live inside north korea for us, in pyongyang with more. give us the latest, will? >> alisyn, we just landed here a couple hours ago. i have to say the mood in the city not tense, but really still buzzing from the nuclear test on sunday, north korea's largest test ever. we saw people out in the streets

practicing dance moves, saw people putting a fresh coat of paint on public spaces. we're expecting huge crowds in the city. south korean intelligence expecting to see something even bigger. a north korean intercontinental ballistic missile launch. officials won't confirm whether a launch is coming. it would make sense for north korea to send this message to the world after the nuclear test. they want to prove they have an intercontinental ballistic missile that can carry a warhead to the target like the mainland united states. the sense here is they continue to say that president trump when he says he's not ruling out a military option but nothing is inevitable, north korea says it would be a big mistake for the u.s. to underestimate their capabilities. over the past few days they've been putting out warnings not only for the u.s. but south korea and japan as well, reminding the world they have these weapons, this h bomb they say. they say they're not afraid to use it if provoked. we could see another

demonstration later in the day. >> will, it is so helpful to have you on the ground to give us that important context. thank you very much. a senior republican aide tells cnn the house will vote this afternoon on a $15.2 billion hurricane harvey relief package passed by the senate on thursday. the measure also increases the debt ceiling and funds the government for the next three months. meanwhile, all five living presidents are joining forces to help hurricane harvey victims. >> hurricane harvey brought terrible destruction, but it also brought out the best in humanity. >> as former presidents we wanted to help our fellow americans begin to recover. >> our presidents in texas including bush 41 and 43 are doing just that. >> people are hurting down here. as one texan put it, we have more love in texas than water. >> we love you, texas.

go out there and rescue anybody who needs to be rescued. however, during a storm, there's nothing we can do for you. you're going to have to wait until afterwards to get rescued. >> some of the teams just came back from texas, working 20-hour days doing schl and rescue in the aftermath of hurricane harvey. despite going from one disaster to another, they say they are motivated to protect their home front. >> harvey obviously took a lot out of us. but now you're talking about home front. we have that second wind and we're going to keep going until we get through this storm and this devastation. >> how do you balance duty to the citizens with where your heart is which has to be home and what's going on with my kids, with my family? when you have to leave them, what do you say to them? >> it's obviously the most difficult part. give me a minute.

you tell them you love them and hope you make it back. >> you're going to be there, and we'll be here to help any way you canment. >> thank you. >> thank you for what you do. without you, we got nobody. >> wow, chris -- >> we call them angels on earth for a reason. and we don't usually get to see that side. these are big, strong people, men, women. they all put duty first. just imagine, for the rest of us, we know what we signed up for. i'm coming here, but i know my kids are safe, i know my wife is going to be okay. they don't know that and they're out here for the rest of us in the worst of situations anyway. you've got to have heart, and your soul tells you these are the best among us. >> that's what i was going to say. they're heroes, but they're human, of course. i think what you showed so well is the toll it takes on responders. we see all the victims. it takes a huge toll, obviously on regular people and a big toll

on responders. they make huge sacrifices as well. >> and unfortunately we're probably going to see that here once again, alisyn, because if irma is anything like what they expect it to be, it's going to be bad, and they're going to be working around the clock and we'll be here to tell the stories of what they do. we'll keep following the hurricane coverage. we'll show you the path of what is to come. it is closing in on south florida. what does that mean? well, hundreds of thousands of smart people are evacuating. not easy, but necessary. we'll talk with a few who can't get out, who are going to face down irma. the storm chasers are going to join us live next.

it out of puerto rico and landed in ft. lauderdale a couple hours ago. tell us what you saw in puerto rico. >> alisyn, we had pretty good hurricane-force wind gusts in puerto rico. luckily they dodged the bullet with the eyewall passing about 35 miles to the north of san juan. there are some damage to the power infrastructure there and some tree damage. luckily they were spared the worst of hurricane irma. >> now you're in ft. lauderdale waiting and watching as irma approaches. what are your plans to chase this storm? >> well, we've been looking at very good reinforced buildings, kind of scoping out some of the parking decks. we have approximately ten crews in southern florida that have been here for three or four days kind of scouting out areas so we can come in and cover the storm and do it safely and kind of

talk to the people and give them a cents of what the meteorologists and the media is doing in terms of telling them this is a serious situation and you guys really need to heed these evacuation orders. >> bret, obviously you do this for a living. does irma feel and look different to you? >> irma is definitely a powerful storm. i was in hurricane harvey a couple weeks ago in texas, and we dealt with the loss of a roof and back wall of our hotel there in rockport. this storm is bigger and stronger currently than harvey. so it absolutely does set in that you could be dealing with something much worse than you dealt with all season zblong bret, is the point of you chasing the storm, do you try to get to the exactly the point where it makes landfall. is that your goal? >> we absolutely like to be in the strongest core of winds and where the impacts are.

we obviously feed video out so we can, number one, serve some of our clients. number two, we want everybody to be able to see what's happening potentially in their neighborhoods without them having to be there. so we're kind of an eyes and ears source of what's going on for -- we've had comments and e-mails from homeowners and people concerned about relatives that ask us questions and see if we can go shoot particular areas for them just to give them a sense of calmness, to know their homes are still there. >> look, bret, what you do is risky. it's very risky. it's life-threatening. you do it a lot. are you scared when the storm rolls onshore and makes landfall? >> you know, we've all had our moments where we've been nervous. the key is you have to be have strategic about the way you operate on the ground. that's the reason we have people
