4:06 am
our country and doesn't try to bring people together and help people understand this is a tough debate over the appropriateness of his protest or to validate where the protest is coming from on the part of largely african-american players who are protesting police brutality or misconduct in this country. this is a tough issue. and for the president to wrap himself in the flag is particularly rich given the fact that, and we were reminded of this last night, said john mccain, war hero, shot down in vietnam, refused to leave captivity because it would have put him ahead of his fellow prisoners, he said he was no war hero because he was captured. and he doesn't like people captured. this is the president who wants to lead us by calling these people s on obs, who should lose

4:08 am
you have government officials, members of his cabinet advocating private business take punitive measures for political speeches that the president does not agree with. they do engage in patriotism. the u.s. government does not open the nfl. instructing nfl owners how to or to punish their players for political speech does have a potentially chilling effect that i think we can't lose here. they are private businesses, private citizens. it is up to those businesses to decide if they want to allow employees to president political speech. i don't know that members of the cabinet have any say whatsoever. we have the president of the united states asking for punitive measures to be taken against private citizens who engage in speech he disagrees with. this is not.
4:09 am
the u.s. government can compel to engage in patriotic expression that people don't want to engage in. that is the core of th conversation. again, it is a pretty stunning statement for the white house to be doubling and tripling down on this idea that if you do not honor and respect our government the way we want you to, we are going to use our bully pulpit to have you lose your job. >> i know that gregory just shot down by political angle. and he's right. there are much larger issues here that i'm glad we're talking about. but i'm confused on the political angle. just as charlottesville dies down, why would the president launch another grenade into the culture wars? how does that benefit him? >> you can ask that for various rounds of charlottesville as well. this seems to be an instinct response from the president, something he doesn't want to let
4:10 am
go of. whether it appeals to his base or not or if it's his own position, that's difficult to say. you can ask the question wyatt so many junctures the last few months. this one is something that he has observed before. this time he weighed in more sternly, which has gotten everybody else up in arms to defend these players who have officially taken a knee. the president doesn't think two steps out of how galvanizing his comments can be for people who don't agree with him. >> you had your chance, gregory, and you upset alyson. >> it's not the first time. >> maybe it's not the fact that charlottesville is dying now, because it's because charlottesville is dying down. >> how does that make sense? >> i'm not saying it makes sense. but the president is more
4:11 am
comfortable talking about the culture wars and in flaming these things than he is about talking about health care, or the hurricane or his son-in-law's e-mails. >> he might be upsetting his base in a different way. his base isn't in puerto rico. or they aren't looking at the details of the health care bill. the idea that his base doesn't watch any football, that is a live war and unpredictable situation. >> i wasn't trying to dismiss the idea of political calculus. i think it's actually -- it is less important and it's really problematic, right? because what happens is that trump looks at how to fashion swralize the country. he did that in the course of the campaign. to skwrebgt himself into culture wars, saying hillary clinton should be locked up, or these
4:12 am
people should lose their jobs for a protest, it goes to two points. one, historical framework. what did richard nixon do to rise to power? he divided those law and order people, the silent majority, against the excesses of what many people thought the excess of the civil rights movement. he sought to divide people further. johnson did it in the vietnam war, the anticipate-war movement during vietnam. here the president is doing it now over race, over patriotism. and these are the kinds of things that he has exploited well during the time when we are factionalized about religion, political polarization. as president, you have an opportunity to insert yourself in a way to be productive. because there's lots of elements to be counter productive. only one president can try to tamp these down and bring people together. >> the problem, though, for what
4:13 am
this -- where he is choosing to have these fights, though, he's not picking something that is as clear and obvious as the vietnam world. it is football. sometimes it's movie stars. it is going into the cultural space to start the cultural wars. that's when you can't tell which direction it is going in. >> the president said this has nothing to do with race. i've never said anything about race. what do you say to that? >> in politics, sometimes we like to pivot towards that. if you did not explicitly have the conversation, it cannot be about race. we know that isn't true. this conversation, a conversation that is about black athletes largely taking a knee during the national anthem in protest, in demonstration of police violence of racial disparities and the number of black people killed by police. and then a conversation weftd the last year in light of those protests whether or not they are

allowed to or should use these platforms to do this. these black athletes in the league largely constructed of white owners. they have faced punitive measures and have been left off teams for speaking their minds and using their platforms. this is a conversation that's closed in america's racial history and the current racial context. >> again, and beyond that, you have a president who has time and time again, winked and nodded about these type of things going to alabama and calling a bunch of athletes sobs. i mean, come on. >> enough said. >> wesley, david, karen, thank you very much. coming up next, sportscaster bob costas joins taos talk about this firestorm. we have a lot of other news including the travel ban. trump administration unveiling restrictions in eight countries including north korea and

the president said we will not admit those is into our country that we cannot safely vet. civil rights groups are crying foul saying this is part of the ugly white supremacist agenda. this could be taken up with the supreme court. the legality of this latest travel ban could take center stage october 10th when the supreme court is hearing arguments about the temporary travel ban that took effect over the summer. >> jessica, thank you very much. president trump said the objections to the protests are not about race. so what are they about? we ask two sides of the argument. that's next. how do we say that this fall, our guests can earn a free night when they book at choicehotels.com and stay with us just two times? fall time.

uncomfortable truths, i think conversation will be much more difficult. but i continue to go back to, and it's becoming redundant to -- for me to try to get people to understand or at least to understand where they're coming from how this has anything to do with the military, how this has anything to do with disrespecting or respecting the country when players are human beings just like everyone else. and they are obviously allowed and afforded their first amendment rights. when you say they shouldn't do it at work, the very first amendment is the one the founding fathers of this country thought they should have as the number one amendment. whenever you start to tell people this is when they can't talk or this is when they should talk, anything is up for grabs, not only in the constitution but

4:25 am
this galvanized a lot of people. we need to use this energy in a way that produce the type of growth that is necessary. when i say it's in thenot a pla your work to go ahead and protest, when i say that i really mean -- obviously you've gottfried on freedom of express. and we do have respect for the veterans. a lot of things we are doing with different aspects of this life that is building. we need to build from this. we don't need to keep being divisive and keep focusing on the fact that we are divisive. we have a lot to build on. this country is a great country. we love this country. we will continue to try to build from different aspects of the

experiences that we go through. >> dante, what do you say to people who say athletes. they should just go play the game. make this sports. or what we have heard from some supporters of the president, the players are privileged. they have the privilege to play this sport and make a lot of money. it's disrespectful not to stand during the anthem? >> there's a lot of people in this country who are making a lot of money and athletes or celebrities draw the eye more than other people. you have executives on wall street who essential ran this economy into the dirt. no one talks about the money they make or no one talks about a game show host making tens of millions of dollars. that is moot about how much money you make. when you're in a position to influence positive change, then
4:27 am
you can't allow yourself to be deterred about what others are saying about you not being patriotic. this goes back to what martin luther king and mohammad ali were telling us. people were calling them unpatriot unpatriotic. it was so obvious and clear for them and not for others. sit a similar situation in my eyes today. >> it has been an honor to speak to both of you. been a fan for a long, long time. >> will revisions in the republican health care bill get them the vote they need to pass it? we talked to one senator he set to take part in today's only health care hearing, next. patp with back pain. but he has work to do. so he took aleve. if he'd taken tylenol, he'd be stopping for more pills right now. only aleve has the strength to stop tough pain

situation we know in puerto rico. but you have been able to achieve some successes the last week or so. i understand you have now made contact with all the communities in puerto rico. is that the case? >> we have made contact with all of the municipalities. we had most of the mayors come to san juan. we established runners all around puerto rico to go to those areas where we don't have telecom. we established routes to deliver food, water, diesel so things can keep on moving. we energized the main hospital and given fuel to alternate hospitals around the island. we have opened the ports so we can get more resources to puerto rico. and a lot of people, and i want to thank them, are giving us aid within the united states and everywhere else. the phone number to assist is 202-800-3133.

consideration. so my ask to congress is the following. the quantity needs to be consistent. the aid package needs to be consistent with the damages. number two, we need to make sure that there is flexibility because puerto rico cannot operate. there is no flexibility on this funding. number three, we need to get financing whether through the treasury or through the fed so that puerto rico can operate again. let me tell you something, puerto rico had already started doing their part. i was embarking on a very aggressive fiscal agenda. we have reduced $1.5 billion in our budget. we started reducing agencies, making the changes we have to. but now this is a game changer. this is a completely different set of circumstances. and this needs to be taken into consideration. otherwise, there will be a humanitarian crisis. there will be massive exodus to the united states. so i call upon congress to take action to make their wishes --

>> yes. again, china really needs to enforce all of the sanctions that have -- that they themselves have voted for, and so whether it's addressing banking. the cash flows. sales of commodities to and from north korea. all of those must be enforced. there are other actions that could be taken as well in terms of understanding maritime traffic in to and out of north korea. again, it's a foundation that sanctions must be enforced, but so is the foundation of having a discussion of all of the security issues, some of which, frankly, the united states has not wanted to discuss. military exercises and the like. i think we need to have all of this on the table for a serious discussion that will be's consistent with at least a longer term denuclearization of the korean peninsula. number one, we need to talk.

we need to freeze the program. we need to, over time, work towards that denuclearization. >> mr. secretary, you were part of the negotiations for the iran nuclear deal. last week before the united nations the president said the u.s. should be embarrassed by that deal. i'm wondering what your reaction was when you heard that? >> well, once again, inflammatory language does not substitute for diplomacy. let's make it very clear -- the iran agreement, first of all, is a very strong agreement. certainly our european allies have been very clear about that. it accomplished what would not have been accomplished through other means. namely, making it very clear that iran will not have a nuclear weapon. i might say that the deal also has unprecedented verification measures, and it also contains a direct commitment from iran that they will never have a nuclear weapon. diplomacy there really -- really has -- given us great strides in

terms of removing that existential threat of a weapon in iran, but, of course, we have many other issues with iran, and the president, just like president obama, is quite correct to work with our allies, the gulf countries, israel, to, in fact, push back on other elements of iran's behavior in the region that we believe is quite destabilizing and frankly support for groups like hezbollah, fundamentally unacceptable. so we need to push across the board. let me just link, also, the two issues we've talked about. certainly if the administration chooses not to certify iran's compliance when the international inspectors say they are complying, that will just be one more step in under cutting the united states reliability in the eyes of our friends and allies and in the eyes for our adversaries, for in particular, why would north korea or others engage us in discussion if we do not show our

intention to honor agreements that we have reached. >> former energy center, thank you very much for your expertise. we are following a lot of news this morning. so let's get right to it. i'm pissed. i supported donald trump and it's annoying to me. >> to say get that son of a bitch awful field. >> use that platform to divide us even more is not something i can stand for. >> right now they don't have my vote. i want to get there. >> gop leaders hoping to win over holdouts with a new version of the health care bill. >> republicans have campaigned on repeal and replace. it's going to be very close. this is the biggest ka as s catastrophe for puerto rico. >> thousands at rick for another threatening situation. >> take a lot of
