tv   New Day  CNN  October 6, 2017 5:00am-6:00am PDT

5:00 am
>> when he should be calming the storm, he's predicting one. >> this is "new day" with chris cuomo and alisyn camerota. >> yes, it's friday, october 6. it's now 8:00 in the east. it has been a long week. poppies graciously stepping in. thank you. >> you woke up this morning somehow. >> my 7-year-old grabbing my head and shaking my hair. >> fourth city. >> i don't know. there's a lot of news. we have to get to it. what drove a man to become so evil and capable of the deadliest mass shooting in modern history? the investigators have his stuff, and now there's a new clue, a note left in the las vegas hotel suite reportedly has random numbers on it. we're waiting for that major clue.
5:01 am
and that killer may have been casing other locations before sunday's massacre. >> we also learned that the shooter tried but failed to buy tracers, and that would have made it easier to see where the shots were going. and then honoring a fallen off duty las vegas officer, his name, charleston heartfield. in this hour we honor all the victims. ahead of that, let's get to jean casarez. she has the latest on the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, poppy. law enforcement continues to not say anything publicly about motive. why this man did what he did. law enforcement does confirm to cnn that the fbi has hundreds of people working on this case at this point, and video released from the scene as the bullets are flying, people helping people. we do want to warn you that some of this may be extremely
5:02 am
disturbing. >> where is's the guy with the double shots? >> he is! >> he has three in his arm. >> anybody else? >> civilians racing to save the wounded in this heart-wrenching video minutes after the attack. >> get in the truck! >> get behind the [ bleep ] wall! >> raymond paige risking his own life, loading them into his truck and driving them to safety. >> i have five wounded. >> a gunshot wound to the chest here! >> somebody help, please. please. >> cnn now learning the killer recently attempted to buy tracer ammunition at a gun show in
5:03 am
phoenix, but was not successful. it would have allowed him to be more accurate when shooting in the dark. five days after the massacre, investigators finding few clues to understand why he did this. "the new york times" reporting that police did find this note in his hotel room that contained numbers that are still being analyzed. authorities are also look into whether the killer was casing other large events. in august, a person with the killer's name reserved a room at chicago's blackstone hotel during the lollapalooza music festival, but the person never checked in, according to the organization with knowledge of hotel records. this after police confirmed the killer rented a room at this downtown las vegas condo complex overlooking another much larger music festival. we're learning just how far the
5:04 am
killer's gunshots travelled. vegas international airport confirm two rounds struck this fuel tank which is roughly 1,100 feet from the concert site and further from the killer's location on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay resort. thousands gathering to honor off-duty police officer, charleston heartfield, an 11 year veteran of the police department. police and soldiers accompanying his wife and children, as the nation mourns the 58 victims. we also have not heard anything about forensic examination of electronic devices, and cell phones and computers from the hotel room and his homes and vehicles. >> we have to get after the investigation now because the more we learn about what this man did to prepare and how he got what he used, the better chance we have of stopping it
5:05 am
the next time. let's bring in cnn law enforcement analyst, james gagliano. what is this new information for you in terms of what makes sense, the tracers, and the numbers? >> behavior analysis is going on right now, and each different piece of evidence we come across right now will lead to more leads. take, for instance, the fact that he booked a room in the b and b, and another hotel in chicago and didn't checkup. that will turn out in the way of leads, all 56 fbi field offices is now going to be reaching out to hotels and saying is anybody under this name checked in or meeting this description, and every lead will be run down. with the parallel investigations, you have the las vegas sheriff's department conducting an investigation, and working in concert with the fbi
5:06 am
because it has not been determined to be an act of terrorism just yet. one thing that needs to happen is i think i would need to see more restraint on the information, and it should be done in concert. the fbi has one way of doing things, which is guarded and releasing things only as it can assist the investigation. the sheriff operates under a different set of rules and regulations. >> this guy did not have a big social life in terms of friends or any friends, only his girlfriend, but he had to have an online life, and they are looking at his computers and cell phone, and we know he texted with his brother in recent weeks. we know there's a note, and they said it's not a manifest or suicide note, but there are numbers on it. when you piece those things together, what are you thinking? >> very limit the social media imprint, poppy. we have not seen much from what has been released.
5:07 am
>> from what has been released. >> and some things have been picked up from the house, and it's digital exhaust, and those things, again, maybe there's nothing on that computer, per se, but that will lead to something else. obviously google searches are important, and unless he used an after market device to scrub it, a lot of it can lead to more leads. >> has anything come out to you as compelling as who they have already in his girlfriend? >> the family had limited contact with him. doesn't seem to have a wide swath of friends. the house they bought, the privacy fence around it, and none of the neighbors knew him other than comings and goings and did not know him personally.
5:08 am
we want to apply normal people standards. this is not fitting the way regular folks act. this guy was a socio path. we have to look outside of that and not be, well he didn't do this, so this can't happen. we have to follow the evidence. that's what the fbi stressed. >> the tracer bullets, couldn't buy them. we know two bullets hit a fuel tank all the way at the las vegas airport. any relevance? >> he did this deed at night, and the tracers would have helped him. >> it would have showed where he was also. >> yes, chris. it's good to point out, the barrel of the rifle -- we could not see muzzle flashes, which means he was pulled back inside. he had military knowledge for somebody that did not have any military experience. >> thank you for the expertise. looking for answers.
5:09 am
we know who the bad guy is, but we are learning all the time about the good guys, the good men and women that stepped up to avert an even greater tragedy. joining us, two members of the fire department. we have a fire captain and an engineer. joe was on duty that night, and travis was off duty attending the concert. travis, everybody you were with, is everybody okay? >> yes, sir. thankfully, we were blessed. all my friends and family made it out unharmed. >> good. we take solace where we find it in a situation like this. captain joe, you can't prepare for something like this. i know you first responders drill all the time and think of every scenario, and this checks every box of chaos, that field of fire in the likes of which we never heard here, and thousands of people in different directions, and no real solid
5:10 am
clue as to what the threat is, and how did you respond? >> well, i think we fell back on our training truthfully. i have been blessed to have leadership that had foresight in something like this and so they put pieces in place that allowed us to train with our officers and have the equipment necessary and really just get our arms wrapped around this problem. >> travis, you being in there, could you imagine of finding yourself in the midst of something like that trying to save lives? >> this is something that we train for, however i don't ever train or practice for, you know, my wife being there with me. usually i am with my captain and a crew full of guys ready to go, so yeah, it was definitely different being in the chaotic atmosphere. >> how did you handle knowing that the woman who was the center of everything that
5:11 am
matters to you in this world was there and vulnerable? >> yeah, no doubt it was really, really terrifying. my first priority was making sure that we got her to safety, getting her in the best cover possible. as soon as we did that and i thought she was in a safe enough position, i think we looked at each other and had that nonverbal communication husband and wives have sometimes, and i told her i had to get to work and she understood, and that's exactly what happened. >> how hard was that? >> it was difficult. however, doing a quick scan of the crowd i saw so many people that needed help. at the time i was very calm, cool, collected and in control of my own thoughts and actions, which is a testament to the training of the clark county fire department over the years, and i wanted to put that to good use. i had experience already in dealing with gunshot wounds and i saw a lot of people that
5:12 am
really could use help. >> too many people. there was one piece of good luck in dealing with the catastrophe. is it true there was a unit that was right nearby that actually heard the gunfire, called it in and was able to be on scene literally in seconds? >> that's absolutely correct. one of our stations, station 11, which is right on the las vegas strip, right across the street, for the most part, was returning back from a call and that came in, so they got the ball rolling to get all the resources on the scene so we could take care of people appropriately. >> you know, we love you guys. you are the best among us, the first responders. people say you are angels here on earth. travis, this had to be heart. yeah, you went there and put
5:13 am
yourself out and do what our first responders do so beautifully, but has it sunk in yet where you were and what was going on and how many people didn't make it out? >> it has. it was definitely something both me and my wife have begun to start to heal from. my recommendation to anybody involved, it's just to do what everybody is telling you to do, start talking to somebody. whether it's your friend or family member, anybody, just start to get that ball rolling. it took us two days to want to open up to anybody. my wife's company flew out a crisis counselor, and we started to talk to him and i can't tell you how much that has helped us since then. >> good for you. good for getting the help to get over this as quickly as possible. the best to you and your wife, and gentlemen, you and your
5:14 am
california, thank you f captain, thank you so much. it could have been worse but we had our first responders there. >> thank you, and be well. >> thank you. we do have more breaking news this morning. hurricane watches in parts of the gulf along the golf coast, tropical storm nate already killed 20 people in central america. our meteorologist, chad meyers, has the forecast. where is it headed? >> it's headed to louisiana, mississippi or alabama. that's the ground zero, if you will, of this storm now. all the models now agreeing this will make landfall in less than 48 hours as a hurricane. likely not a category 3 or major hurricane, but it's at 80 miles per hour. it's a very small cone because it's so close now. we are almost 36 hours away from landfall so the cone is not wide. it could be stronger or weaker, but a stronger storm would still make that storm surge that we know what happened around katrina time, all that surge got
5:15 am
into the bay of st. louis. it will be similar to how it came onshore as a category 1 hurricane. 80 miles per hour will be okay. it's on land tomorrow night, be ready for it. >> thank you very much. people will watch this information. hopefully the speed of the storm reduces its impact. we will see. speaking of storms, the president is at a meeting with the senior military, and you looks out and says you could be looking at the calm before the storm. was this just another rhetorical flourish by somebody who entertains? what storm? kevin, meet your father.

5:20 am
president trump's message last night about the calm before the storm after a meeting with his military leaders is, of course, raising questions. the president refused to clarify what he meant. was it just a joke? take a listen. >> you guys know what this represents. you could be looking at the calm before the storm. >> what storm? >> the calm before the storm. >> what storm, mr. president? >> the world's best military people. thank you all for coming. thank you. >> what storm, mr. president? >> you'll find out. >> all right. joining us now is cnn diplomatic analyst. what is your take? >> first of all it's reckless for the commander-in-chief to be tossing out phrases like calm before the storms. this was a social setting. you could see all the military
5:21 am
leaders had their spouses there. it's a yearly thing. it's not at all about doing business. as i watch that clip and i have seen it several times this morning, chris, and you look at that smug look on the president's face and you can tell what he's do something wrapping himself in the glory of being s being surrounded by the senior military people and showing he's the boss and the commander-in-chief. there's probably no big storm coming from a military perspective, and he was simply trying to show off. >> hope you are right. secretary of state, tillerson, comes out and gives a bizarre press conference where he reaffirmses his commitment to the president, and what is your take? >> so first of all, significant rex tillerson comes out and gives a press conference, and he doesn't do a lot of pressers for
5:22 am
him to come out and rebut this, there was discussions between foggy bottom and the white house, the story needed to be cleaned up and cleaned up quickly. and president trump was not all that happy with the way he cleaned it up. we know tillerson had problems with the house over staffing and retention issues, and what will be interesting to see is if this story from nbc about the moron comment makes it unattainable for tillerson to stay in his position. and many say he's committed to staying onboard. >> do you buy this presser was a make good and this was the bargain for exchange, if you want to stay, clean it up? >> i don't think it was a bargain, but i think he was told to get out and fix it, do it however you want and do it quickly. i don't think it was a bargain,
5:23 am
do this and you get to stay. i don't get the sense that rex tillerson needs this job so badly he would do something extraordinary to be able to stay in the job. i don't get that sense from him. >> if he were to be out now, it would be another unprecedented removal. we have never seen anything like this, except for alexander hague. the iran deal. the president hates the deal. he wants to decertify. what would that mean? >> what this is, it's a trump two-step, chris. all he's doing -- there's two certification channels. one is through the national atomic association, and they are doing the assessments, and they are looking to see if iran is in compliance. this one is the certification required of the white house by congress when the deal was put in place for the president to say internally to the united
5:24 am
states, yes, they are still in compliance. what we are hearing is they are going to decertify the compliance and that kicks it over to congress and they will have 60 days to examine the president's de certification statement. when he does this nothing changes. the deal stays in place. the only way it changes is if congress decides, trump, you are right, they are not in compliance and we will snap back the sanctions, and then what you will do is given the hardliners what they want in tehran, because they never liked this deal either and they will try to get iran to back out and once iran backs out from their commitments, the game is over. >> they were not as rash or definitive as the president is in terms of wanting to step back
5:25 am
from this. how real is the concern about the allies feeling differently about this than the president does? how real is the concern that you won't be able to make a deal with north korea if they know that this president will walk away from one so easily? >> it's significant. if you saw the testimony this week, the chairman of the joints chief of staff, and then last week at the hudson institute, the u.s. commander of strategic command, both said when we make an agreement like this nationally it's important for us to meet the requirements of the agreement, because other people, allies and adversaries will read into that when we pull out and both were referring to north korea. we are a far cry away from sitting at the negotiation table with north korea. it's fair for our friends around the world to wonder as well as our adversaries, if we pull out of this, to wonder about our
5:26 am
trustworthiness around the world. many allies are concerned about where the president is going on the iran deal. they understand it's a pwaour kratic maneuver. >> john, thank you very much for your perspective. appreciate it. the families of mass shooting victims are now stepping in in a beautiful way to comfort those who lost loved ones in las vegas. they will join us with their message next.

in a cnn exclusive we are learning special counsel bob mueller is meeting with the reporter that had the russian dossier. what do you make of the concern the state of play in the white house? >> i think it's impossible to separate the rage that the president is in about mueller's investigation from the rest of the president's rage about many things happening around him, including tillerson's comment that the president is a moron. purportedly he made that comment. what there's a sense of, people
5:48 am
in the white house and republicans on capitol hill, the wheels are coming off the presidency and in the white house, and there's an attempt by those closest to the president, kelly and the military leaders, to try and constrain the president from his own inclinations to say wild things, to act irresponsibly. it's almost as if there's a protector around the president. he's constantly complaining, going into rages about the investigation, about disloyalty among his aides. it's an extraordinary situation, unlike anything i have seen in 50 years in washington. >> if you ask republican senator, bob corker, let's listen to this. >> i think secretary tillerson and secretary mattis and chief of staff kelly are those people that helped separate our country
5:49 am
from chaos. i support them very much. >> so is that a one often anomaly, or is that reflecttive of what you are hearing from other republicans on the hill? >> i believe the big story right now, if we can get to it within the press by going to the republican members of congress and going to military leaders and leaders in the intelligence community is that many of them have lost confidence in this president, they doubt his fitness to be president, and they doubt his competence, and they are worried he has to be restrained and constrained by these military leaders. george washington resigned his commission so we could have civilian control of the military, and now we have military control of the presidency. this is not what our system was meant to do. at the same time people are counting on the military
5:50 am
leaders, mattis, mccmaster, et cetera, et cetera, to keep the president from doing wild things. the president is going up against the recommendations of his own national security apparatus on the iran deal. this is a sense the president is the president of his base. he's not the president of all people in the sense of presidents traditionally, and he made no attempt to unite the fee pu -- the people of the country. our allies are dismayed by the conduct of this president. they don't believe he's a consistent leader in the sense of american leadership, so meanwhile people around the president who are coming before grand jurys and are coming before investigators are talking
5:51 am
because there are e-mails they have produced that have had to be turned over, some 20,000 e-mails from people in the white house. they have no choice, including people very close to the president, they have no choice but to talk truthfully to the prosecutors. this, too, is a source of great con straw nation and rage by the president, who sees his son-in-law, jared kushner, at the center of the investigations. there's a lot of lashing out. meanwhile the work of the presidency is not being done in the traditional sense. we have many appointments that have not been filled. we have never seen this kind of chaos in a presidency before. we have seen difficult 100 days, and difficult first six months, and bill clinton's was disastrous in some ways, and this is different because it goes to the feeling that the president of the united states may be unfit for the office.
5:52 am
>> he says it's your fault, that it's the media, and you are making stuff up about him and dwell on the negative and give him no credit and that's why he's caught in the cycle he's in. >> i think he's caught in the cycle he's in because of his own actions and inactions. he used the power of the presidency effectively to prom annual gate regulations, and he has plenty of power and he exercises it. this is something different. the idea to make the conduct of the press the issue, as nixon did in watergate, but no president has done in terms of what trump has done in the press, and he doesn't understand the free press and first amendment, and if we are to believe the poll numbers, and that's only a snapshot, the credibility of the press is rising with quite a rapid ascent
