good evening. thanks for joining us. minutey happening tonight including the latest on how far hillary clinton's campaign went to get dirt on donald trump. and new reporting breaking news on how far the trump campaign may have gone to get dirt on her. trump supporters say the real scandal is what the clinton side did and a number of key republican lawmakers appear to be trying to steer their investigation into that direction. we'll talk about both views tonight. we begin with contact between a data crunching -- what are you learning tonight about this connection between the trump campaign and wikileaks.

>> we've learned that the head of cambridge analytica, a data firm for the trump campaign reached out directly to week i licks director julian as sang during the campaign. he acknowledged that did in fact happen. he says he rejekd the request. the head of this firm sent an e-mail to several people, including top republican donor rebecca mercer relaying that he had e-mailed as sang but sources tell us no one from the actual campaign was on that e-mail chain. for context, we can i leaks was responsibility for releasing e-mails from the -- not hillary clinton's e-mails which we don't even know if a third party ever obtained. so this new revelation establishes the closest known link between the trump campaign and i can wikileaks and it happened while donald trump was on the campaign trail, anderson, talking about hillary clinton's missing 33,000 e-mails, as

you'll recall. we should also mention the daily beast was first to report the e-mail outreach. >> the trump campaign has responded. michael glass ner clearly trying to distance the campaign saying, quote, once president trump secured the nomination in 2016, one of the most important decisions we made was to partner with the republican national committee on data analytics. we as a campaign made the choice to rely on the voter data of the republican national committee to help elect president donald j. trump. any claims that voter data from any other source played a key role in the victory are false. >> cnn has covered a few things that seem to refute that statement. >> that's right. it's clear that there was more of a relationship than than what is sorted of conveyed in that statement because we've learned that just after trump won the nomination his campaign started a series of payments to analytica in july all the way

through december. in addition jared kushner who headed up one of the data operations said to forbes' magazine back in november just after the president won the election we kept both data operations going simultaneously and a lot shared between them. and by doing that we could scale to a pretty good operation. so it appears there he is giving credit to cambridge analytica with their success. >> stay right there. i want to bring in betsy woodruff. betsy, as we said, you broke the story this morning. if all of this is true, this would be the closest connection between the trump's campaign and julian assange. >> it's been reported that roger stone communicated through an intermediary with as sang, but there's no caters that he was speaking on behalf of the campaign or in any capacity that was official.

however, alexander knicks was and is the ceo of aim bridge an lit which which was paid almost $6 million for work it did on the campaign. and when knicks reached out to julian as sang, he was specifically offering, according to my sources. of course, those e-mails have not been released or distributed. as someone who was at the top of a company that worked for the trump campaign, that's a direct link. >> josh, you were reporting inside the data operation called inside the trump bunker with 12 days to go. you heard what they said about relying on the rnc there in their statement. that's true. >> it's almost laughably false. we were vied down in the month before the campaign in order for them to show off what it was they were doing. the idea at the time publicly

was that the data operation of the campaign was just trump and his twitter feed. no, in fact, they had three different sources of polling. and not only that, they had a team of kram bridge data scientists embedded in san diego who were doing very sew fists indicate handle work. in the weeks right before the election when stomach started winging wisconsin -- he was there because the cambridge models told him that's where you can pick up voters. >> so in that statement today we only relied on rnc and any other suggestion, that's false. >> they showed off their waers. it would spit out the likeliest path for trump to get to 270 electoral votes and they would send trump to that state based

on what the model told us. >> if you're robert mueller, would you care about this? >> oh, heck, yeah. you've got two basic questions here, anderson. the first question is whether anybody in the trump campaign participated with russians to acquire the data. that's why the conversations between donald trump and a russian is significant. if you acquire data or participate in an either to acquire data, how do you get that out? do you participate in a conversation with wikileaks about getting that out. when you're investigating there's data and interviews. this is a gold main. i want to know every time anybody from the trump campaign spoke or e-mailed or texted with cambridge an lit what, what the content were.

when done junior said he was speaking about immigration issues, what is adoption and when we learn from the e-mail -- as we said as a candidate donald trump -- i remember him giving a speech where he said i live wikileaks of the his own cia director has a very different view of them. >> he sort of changed his tune as soon as he became the director. he said that wikileaks was a none state hostile intelligence service that was doing the bidding for u.s. adverse others like run. wikileaks was like a paup arm. russians. that's how it was being used during the campaign. and the intelligence community made a direct link between wick i weeks and the raurnls during the campaign. >> lets i, can you just explain why would someone from this

company reach out to julian assange? i mean, was the offer if you have them, give us the 33,000 e-mails and we'll help distribute them? because week i leaks doesn't have any problem distributing stuff. >> i can't get into any more details. one thing that we know without any debt is those 33,000 e-mails were something of a great white whale or the republican party. there were republican operatives ook specifically looking for those e-mails. president trump bring them up in one conference. trumped that he hoped if russia had those e-mails that they would release them. the current president virtually sanctioned efforts to try to obtain those 33,000 e-mails. the as a result it's not certainly surprising that somebody leaving a company that was deeply invested to trump

being a -- >> i just want to play you one of the things that then candidate trump said on the trail. >> russia, in you're listening, i hope you're able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. >> josh, you obviously wrote this the book on steve bannon. is he connected to this at all? >> that's the other big kmekz. bannon was the ceo of the trump campaign, i believe, at the time these e-mails were sent. he had already been not only a stakeholder but a board member. very closely aligned with rebecca measurrcer, so -- >> it's possible there are more e-mails that mueller would have ses to. i'm not aware of e-mails for bannon. and i haven't done the showing. asong was almost yiek a mascot

of the trump campaign. i was embedded during the trump campaign head quarters. so he was somebody who was actively cheered on not just by trump but by people in the trump campaign. >> do you agree with what phil said earlier that this would be of interest to the mueller's team. >> i think -- this could speak to the intent that folks in his trump's international. additionally, the mandate that bob mueller has for the investigation that he's conducting is to look at any coordination or links between people who are associated with the trump campaign and the russian government. clearly alexander knicks was associated with the trump campaign, so he's part of that

its tone, its face has been dramatically changed by a man who until a few years ago was a domestic. >> are people uniting behind this party? it seems like this is now the republican party of president trump. >> yeah. this is a conversation about the outliers. you know, these guys, flake and corker, doin the stretch the civil war on the republican party was the primary and trump won. he won on issues and he united the party. when the party come through united. >> he still has very high numbers among the republicans. >> by the way, we should do a series on flake, a profile in cord as. he admitted he voted to hillary. it wasn't on cia, sorry. he admitted he voted for hillary. he doesn't believe in the party's position and he quit because he said you can't run the hold and the positions i hold.

our country depends on it. today president trump weighed in on revelations about the clinton campaign and dnc involvement in funding the research that led to the now infamous dossier of alleges about connections between president trump and russia. according to the reporting that research initially had been funding by an as of yet anti-trump republican source. here is part of what the president today as he left the white house. >> well, i think it's very sad what they've done with this fake dossier. it was made up, and i understand they paid a tremendous amount of money. and hillary clinton always denied it. the democrats always denied it. and now only because it's going to come out in a court case they said, yes, they did it. they admitted it. and they're embarrassed by it. but i think it's a disgrace. it's just really -- it's a very

sad -- it's a very sad commentary on politics in this country. >> let's just make this clear. the president keeps calling it a fake dossier. there are large portions of it that have been corroborated by the u.s. intelligence community, correct. >> that's absolutely right. cnn has reported that as far back as february. the intelligence community corroborated portions of this, specifically meetings and conversations between trump associates and russians including russians known to u.s. intelligence did in fact take place as detailed in the dossier. there's a demonstration of that. remember, the intelligence chiefs considered it substantial enough to breathe then president-elect donald trump to provide them with a synopsis of this dossier in that briefing in january and more recently cnn reported earlier this month that in fact the intelligence community and law enforcement considered it substantial enough again that they did not include it in the public assessment of russian interference in the u.s. election released in january as

well because they didn't want to let on what exactly corroborated and how they corroborated it. and more recently we reported that robert mueller has also interviewed the author of the dossier, christ on steel, the former mi6 agent who put it together. >> what more are you learning about the clinton campaign involvement with the dossier. >> a source familiar with the matter telling cnn today that the law firm perkins coy as part of its representation of the clinton campaign and the dnc retained the intelligence firm into engagement for research began in april of 2016 and brkd before the election in november. i should note that previously cnn has reported that the fusion efforts were first -- democrats began paying the research firm later on after trump became the presumptive nominee. the identity of the republican cliept or clients has not been

publicly revealed. isht note that christopher steel did not begin working on the dossier until the democrats began -- it was paid for by republicans originally. >> that as the news was breaking last night. when i tried to report this story clinton campaign lawyer pushed back vigorously saying you or your sources are wrong. ken vogue eljoins us now. >> so did the clinton campaign lie here? >> i don't know about lying. they pushed back visousel. i had told him that i had sources who said perkins cowe was the client, that he actually possessed the dossier before the election that he was involved in packaging it to try to get media coverage of the contents of the dossier. you sonded you or your sources are wrong. clierl the sources were right in that perng ins was the client on behalf of the clinton campaign as well as the dna.

what they say in their defense is that what we now think of as the dossier was not in that form at the time. in fact, it was just a collection of these memos. so they were spopding to a question about the dossier as opposed to the contents of their search. a little bit of semantics there obviously. >> seem to be splitting hairs there. whether it was the dossier or i guess they're saying it was just a bunch of memos, do we know how widely those memos or where those memos. i mean, this law firm is the middle man essentially. they're the one who hired fusion gps who had been doing ongoing research. what happened to those memos? who saw them. >> that's one of the big mysteries here, anderson. both top folks in the cln ton campaign as well as folks at the dnc up to and including the chair debbie wasserman schultz. all said they have no knowledge of this.

hillary clinton herself told associates that she had no knowledge of it when the dossier was ultimately published by buzz feed. in fact, she expressed some disappointme disappointment that the dossier did not get out before the election. well, we now know that her own campaign or at least its representatives in this law if i am could have had had a hand in pushing this out and may not have done so as aggressively as she potentially would have liked. >> is this just what a lot of democrats are saying, is look this is just opposition research like any campaign does. >> i think that's probably right but then it does beg the question why would they go to such great length to distance themselves from it, both at the time as well as after the fact, after the election when i and other reporters were asking about it and trying to find the funding of the dossier. you have none of the folks who are willing to take the responsibility. it does sort of stretch kred ult to think that no one at the dnc

or the clinton campaign would have been aware of this. there are people -- if they're spending all this money at perkins coy wee, in fact their expenditures during the election cycle totaled about $12.5 million. uld think they want to know precisely what they're getting for that money. >> and for republicans who are saying, well, this is hillary clinton's campaign colluding with russians, that's based on the idea that christopher steel was being fed false information and was passing that on or that -- how can you make that claim? >> well, to get in her head i'm not sure i want to do that because i think it is sort of a species claim. but perhaps the idea he was paying certainly. we certainly heard that that's a possibility and the way that these times of opposition research arrangements typically work if you're trying to collect

an update about a congressman who is spreading a conspiracy theory, insulting one. to the memory of heather hire who was killed by white supremacists the weekend other neo-nazis marched in charlottesville this past summer. he caught our attention a few weeks back because he vice news correspondent, elrooef. here's exactly what he said to her. >> let's look at the person that actually started the rally. it's come to our attention that this is a person from occupy wall street that was an obama sympathizer. so wait a minute. be careful where you start taking these people to and look at the background. george soros is one of those individuals who back these people. george soros, i think he was jewish and turned in his own people to the nazis. you have to be careful where we go with those.
