. 8:00 in moscow and wherever you are watching for around the world, thanks for joining us. claims of revenge. president trump declaring the u.s. struck isis harder after the terror attack in new york city. the evidence doesn't back him up. more amnesia. despite claiming he has the best memory, he said he can't remember the meeting with the campaign adviser who pleaded guilty to lying about russian contacts. 11 minutes of silence. who deleted the president's

twitter could. new questions about who has access and troubling risks. we start with president trump and a new declaration of war with isis. the u.s. military stepped up attacks on the terror group as retribution for tuesday's terror attack in new york city. listen to this. >> what we are doing is every time we are attacked from this point forward and it took place yesterday, we are hitting them 10 times harder. so when we have an animal on an attack like he did the other day on the west side of manhattan, we are hitting them 10 times harder. they claim to miss a soldier, good luck. we nch it's isis and we hit them like you folks won't believe. >> isis claimed the new york terror attack suspect as a soldier of the caliphate. let's bring in our reporter. the president tweeted that the
10:02 am
military has been hitting isis much harder over the past two days. he said it once again and you heard it before boarding marine one. what are you hearing from officials at the pentagon? >> wolf, there is no clear indication that there has been increase in military activity against isis. in fact statistics by the coalition in iraq and syria showed that the number of air strikes against isis has remained steady over the last few days. the numbers fall from a few months ago when the number of strikes was higher. part of that is there is so much success on the ground against isis. they have been expelled from mosul and raqqa and they are left in a few border towns on the border. there are fewer targets to. there has not been been a dramatic increase on strikes. part of that could be there are always options of special operations and meigs.
10:03 am
we don't know about that. they haven't been publicly talked about. nothing publicly to show the military increased operations. the pentagon not specifically addressing trump's comments. saying that the military remains active fighting isis all over the world with iraq and syria and places like niger, nigeria and the philippines where the u.s. is helping local militaries battle isis affiliated groups. no direct indications or public indications of an up tick in military activity at this time despite what trump said. >> at the pentagon for us with that update, thanks very much. let's go to new developments in the russia collusion and the impact on the president's inner circle. jared kushner delivering do you means to jeff sessions and credibility called into question after new revelations about what he knew about contacts with russia and even new claims about about the president's actions
10:04 am
with a campaign meeting where the russia issue popped up and asked about that meeting today, here's the president's response. >> i don't remember much about that meeting. i don't remember much about it. >> you claim that the campaign never talked to anybody from russia? do you stand by that claim? >> all i can tell you is this. there was no collusion. no nothing. it's a disgrace. >> the white house press secretary sarah sanders said the same thing yesterday that the president didn't remember the meeting and surprising to give them the boast about his memory and even just last week. listen. >> there is no hesitation. one of the great memories of all time, there was no hesitation. >> the president may not remember the meeting, but we know from another foreign policy adviser at the table who said
10:05 am
the president heard him out when george papadopoulos suggested a face-to-face meeting between donald trump and russian officials. jessica schneider is joining us right now. let's start with jared kushner. what more do we know about the do you means that he turned over and what investigators are hoping to learn. >> they handed over do you means that he had from the campaign and the transition. in addition anything he had related to contacts with russia, all to the special counsel's office. this document production is coming at the same time sources tell us investigators have begun asking other witnesses about kushner's role in the firing of fbi director james comby in may. kushner said he was in favor of the decision and didn't press it while multiple sources tell a different story and said kushner was the driver of that decision. either way this cooperation now handing over do you means by
10:06 am
kushner. this was another example of muller's team reaching into the inner circle and continuing that probe into the obstruction of justice issue. >> in the hot seat once again, a former adviser carter page testified in front of the house intelligence committee yesterday. what did he say about his russia contacts and what sessions knew? >> carter page disclosing that he told jeff sessions that he was traveling to russia at the height of the campaign. he said he informed sessions about that trip in a group dinner washington in 2016. while sessions was a top coombe pain surrogate and leading the campaign's national security team. this is what carter page said behind closed doors to the house intelligence committee yesterday. back in june of 2016, i mentioned in passing that i happened to be planning to give a speech at a university in moscow. he continued saying understandably it was as irrelevant then as it is now. page downplaying the brief discussion.
10:07 am
democrats on the hill said sessions's omission of this is problematic. here's the line of questioning from june. >> you aware of any communications with any trump officials or did you have communications with any officials about russia or russian interests in the united states before january 20th? >> no. >> that was a similar answer that sessions gave at multiple hearings including in october. then of course there was that meeting in march 2016 where george papadopoulos sat feet from donald trump and thens ennor jeff sessions. papadopoulos at the time said he wanted to set up a meeting with campaign officials and putin and even trump himself. we are hearing with jd gordon in that meeting as well. he put it this way saying at the time donald trump heard him out. we know that jeff sessions did
10:08 am
dismiss any possibility of a meeting with putin, but sessions never disclosed the details despite repeated questioning over the past year. they want answers. wolf? >> yes, they do. reporting for us, jessica, thanks very much. with investigators on president trump's doorstep, he is getting more aggressive with the justice department. this is part of a series of tweets this morning. people are angry and at some point the justice department and the fbi must do what is right and proper. the american public deserves it. then as the president prepared to leave on his asia trip, he said this on the south lawn of the white house. >> i'm not involve and i would like to let it run itself, but they should be looking at the democrats. they should be looking at podesta and all of that dishonesty. they should be looking at a lot of things and a lot of people are disappointed in the justice department including me.
10:09 am
>> and here's the president in a separate radio interview last night seeming to lament his lack of control over the u.s. justice department. >> the saddest thing is that because of the president of the united states i am not supposed to be involved with the justice department. i'm not supposed to be involved with the fbi. i'm not supposed to be doing the things i would love to be doing and i'm frustrated by it. >> very frustrated. >> the diplomatic and military analyst. and the state department. our cnn legal analyst is with us. cnn politics reporter and editor at large. the editor and columnist for real clear politics. what do you think about what the president said about his inability and he is frustrated that he can't control the justice department and the fbi. >> that's by design and the separation of powers and the policy of procedures in place that assume that the fbi and the
10:10 am
doj should be able to operate independently. his frustration is understandable that he cannot have a hand in it, it hasn't acted as a sensor and if he is aware he cannot be involved with the fbi, it almost begs the question of why you fired the fbi director and why the fired the attorney general sally gates at the time and why you had a hand in the rhetoric about what the justice department does. if you are aware, it hasn't been a time that bound his hands or mouth. >> it's interesting. i think there is like 13 or 14 tweets just today. the day is only halfway through here in washington. he's on a plane flying to hawaii and starting with his asian visit. a lot of these tweets going after crooked hillary repeatedly. after the election, he said he was done going after hillary clinton. didn't need any more investigations and now tweet
10:11 am
after tweet after tweet, he wants the justice department to start a new investigation. he wants the fbi on hillary clinton as well. >> one of my favorite donald trump quotes and one of my favorites is i would be so presidential, you will be bored. he said that in june of 2016 when there were doubts about whether he could transition from pundit attack dog candidate to what we would think of as president. now he said i am modern day president. you act like it most of the time. if i was jeff sessions, i'm not sure i would ever sleep terribly well given donald trump has called you beleaguered and attacked you publicly. i would especially not sleep well right now. donald trump you mentioned eight tweets before 8:30 in the morning. about half of them taking off after crazy bernie, crooked hillary and pocohontas, not very
10:12 am
pleasant reference to elizabeth warren and the justice department. he didn't five more on the plane. it's a long flight to hawaii and he will be on the flight for a while longer. you know, is firing jeff sessions likely to happen today? no, but given donald trump a track record, given his misunderstanding, continued misunderstanding of separation of power and why these things are separate for the good of democracy, i don't rule anything out. >> we just heard him say, a lot of people are disappointed in the justice department including me. that one tweet he said everybody is asking why the justice department and fbi is not looking into the dishonesty with crooked hillary and the dems. you know who runs the justice department. the attorney general of the united states, jeff sessions. >> there are a lot of people around him that would like him
10:13 am
to be super aggressive including steve bannon his chief strategist who would like him to go after mueller and there was worry right now and wonder about whether he intends to fire jeff sessions and bob mueller. one of my favorite quotes about donald trump came a few nights after his election. when she asked whether or not he would proceed to lock uphillry clinton and he said i don't want to hurt them. they are very good people. i don't want to hurt them. this is obviously a way of distracting from what's going on with whatever it is. his agenda and the russia investigation and all of the indictments in the news surrounding that. that's why he keeps talking about how it's a disgrace and there was no collusion. we didn't hear about this and there was a new revelation about tony podesta being targeted by bob mueller. this concern with hillary clinton is a way of distracting
10:14 am
and donald trump makes that clear all the time. he likes to distract. >> it's one thing worth noting is that comey has given the people the perception that we comment on ongoing investigations and the existence of them and whether they do not exist. it's a presumption being made that there is not an investigation. because of the actions taken about that press conference where you outlined the thought process and the logic and discretion that is going in to charge a case, everyone is left saying we should be knowing more by now. the history of the fbi and the department is one where you don't have the tar and feathering happening in public because you don't want this weird thing to happen. >> to react with what the president said started in the tweet, isis claimed the degenerate animal killed and wounded on the west side, was there soldier based on that, the military hit isis much harder over the last two days. they will pay a big price for
10:15 am
every attack on us. you heard a reporter at the pend gon said they looked to see and at least so far there has not been a more accelerated pace. wie can't rule out that they have actionable inteligence. two things are important to remember. there has been for three years a continuous military push against these guys. continuous activity that started under president obama and to trump's credit, he loosened up the rules. what they haven't done and what i think they need to focus more on is countering the narrative. this guy that did this attack was self radicalized here in the united states. i have seen precious little to try to tackle the narrative of isis which continues to propagate to a fine purchase. >> just to add to that point,
10:16 am
being tougher is not a policy. we are going to come back at him 10 times as hard. in the same way when he said this guy should change the laws and get them the death penalty. how? how does that fit into the terms of countering the ideological beliefs and countering what their actions are. there is not anything that surfaced. he said because he thinks it, but then you have hr mcmaster or john kelly. when he was really trying to say he would secure america against these sorts of people. these guys should get the death penalty. that's not the same thing. >> we are watching every step of the way. thank you very, very much. as the president begins his asia trip, north korea accusing the united states of a nuclear strike drill. the national security adviser to

work that president obama left behind. that is all about the tax reform package, the deregulation, the policies that he has been putting in place and promises to put in place. yes, there is a distinct effect and people can't deny there is an effect of that. having said that though, there is another person we need to remember in all of this. janet yellin. her stewardship of the economy over the last four years that enabled this level of confidence and growth to continue and to be sustainable and the irony of course is yesterday donald trump doesn't renominate the person who is responsible for much of the sustainable growth and job creation. it is an interesting irony and that's the way it is. you can give credit to donald trump for so much so far, yes. the 4.1% and the confidence is
