the u.s. president starting his 12-day trip to asia. with concern over nuclear north korea and all-time high, how will this president be received in the region? plus, the caliphate crumbles. isis loses more ground in iraq and syria. we will have a closer look at the battle. and the fallout continues for actor kevin spacey among sexual harassment allegations. welcome to the viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm natalie powell.

>> i'm george howell. cnn newsroom starts right now. u.s. president spending the night in hawaii. he and his wife arrived there overnight. they then go to the pacific rim. >> it is the president's first trim to the region. we get the latest from ryan be nobles in honolulu. >> reporter: the longest trip of the donald trump administration is now under way. the trip to the asia pacific region, itthe longest trip sinc george h.w. bush administration. the president en route to hawaii. the first leg of the trip, busy on twitter talking about hillary clinton and bernie sanders and bowe bergdahl. the army soldier who escaped jail time. he has not talked a lot about the trip in the weeks leading up to the event.

despite the fact it will be vital. particularly as it relates to north korea and the kim jong un administration. and he will meet with leader from vietnam and china and japan, all who played an important role as it relates to dealing with north korea. in hawaii, the president has a busy schedule. he met with the leaders of the pacific command. he got a briefing from them. he toured the "uss arizona." president appearing especially moved by that particular event. the president will be wheels up from hawaii first thing in the morning en route to the first asian destinations. that is tokyo. in all it will be take 12-day trip ending in the philippines next week. ryan nobles, cnn, honolulu. >> let's look at mr. trump's trip. he arrived in japan on sunday and then meets and plays golf with shinzo abe.

then it is off to south korea to meet president moon. he will skip the demilitarized zone. in china, he will visit xi jinping and heads to vietnam for the cooperation summit. the final stop is manila for the associations of the southeast asian nations. >> they talk about this with the professor at the university of london. leslie, always a pleasure to have you with us. let's first talk about the best possible outcome for this president on this trip. >> this is an incredibly important trip. it is surprising we have not heard as much about it from the president as we would expect. not surprising with all of the things going on domestically for him. the two big issues, one is really trying to get regional cooperation on putting pressure on north korea so that the u.s. can move forward with some sort

of strategy for trying to bring some halt to the development of the nuclear arsenal in north korea. the second big issue is really anchor america's role in asia when it comes to trade and leadership. i think there has been a real issue of trying to do that. remember the first move from president trump when he took office was to withdraw the united states from the trans-pacific partnership. that would seem to be a significant vehicle for exercising u.s. influence not only for trade and bolstering trade in the region, but exercising influence and leadership in the region. with that off the table now, i think anchoring the u.s. and cements its relationship with allies and pushing forward on trade is crucial. north korea is on top of the list. this is an important trip. the president as you know is distracted and there's very real

concern about how that will go. >> let's talk more about the distraction in a moment. i want to go there with you. i also want to ask you pushing forward on trade. you touched on this. the president has been highly critical of many of the trade agreements and arrangements with countries in that part of the world. sometimes to the point the criticism could seem inflammatory to the countries. how does the president square the circle here and gain support to show that the united states is behind these allies and pushing very aggressively on the trade issues. >> it is very tricky. remember, this is the president that cares about trade, obviously, but he wants to see bilateral trade deals negotiated and renegotiated that serve america's interest in large part so he can write back home he has done this. one of the key issues here is because of the number of senior

level officials across the administration haven't been appointed to the positions. remember, we don't have u.s. ambassador in south korea yet. it becomes difficult in the aftermath and build up to the trip and aftermath of the trip to continue that sort of daily diplomacy that makes the prospects for a successful trade relationship more likely. the president will really need to work very hard to show that he isn't seeking to inflame relations with the u.s. and allies. japan and south korea. that becomes crucial in the context of the growing crisis over the nuclear problem with north korea. it is absolutely vital. inevitably the politics with the issues become linked. >> north korea. big issue. trade. big issue.

at the same time, you touched on this. there is a bit of a distraction this president may be dealing with concerned about what is happening back in washington, d.c. continuing the investigation into the russia probe. how does the simple fact that investigation is taking place and ramping up -- does it undermine the president as he is dealing with the world leaders? >> i think the leaders across asia will be looking to see. it has been said and i think it is right. there have been many american presidents faced distractions. i think the thing that is unique about the current president is he is very well placed to be tremendously distracted by temperament and of course because of the nature of the russia investigations because of what we saw monday. he's paying a lot of attention to this. he was tweeting about this and trying to play his strategy of diverting attention to try to

shift focus on to the democrats and hillary clinton. it is clearly on his mind. i think that won't play well. leaders will watch this and will be aware of this. i think approaching the meetings with the degree of helps ten as i. will the president be in the room with them and engaged on the issues at hand. a lot will come down to -- this is a long trip. 12 days is a long trip for anybody. especially for this president. i think we may see more difficulty as the trip progresses staying on message and sticking to the issues. the united states has been trying to reshape or reframe in asia. president obama tried to pivot in asia with the issues and distractions for u.s. foreign policy in the middle east. president trump knows asia is vital. has wanted to take a far less conciliatory stance.

he opened up a space for china. getting the trip right is crucial. it is likely to be very difficult because he will be distridi distract distracted. >> 9:08 in london. leslie, thank you for your insight. >> thank you. >> and continuing on that story. we are learning more about contacts between donald trump's campaign officials and the russians. >> the campaign's national security adviser carter page tells cnn he had a brief passing meeting with the deputy prime minister while in moscow last year. cnn's jim sciutto has details. >> reporter: a pressing question. where president trump and attorney general sessions misleading when they denied any knowledge of campaign contacts with russians? here is mr. trump in february. >> can you say whether you are aware anyone who advised your campaign had contacts with russia during the course of the election? >> i told you general flynn was dealing.

that is one person. he was dealing as he should have been. >> during the election? >> nobody i know of. >> reporter: here is mr. sessions in testimony last month. >> you don't believe that surrogates from the donald trump campaign had communications with the russians? >> i did not and i'm not aware of anyone else that did. i don't believe it happened. >> reporter: court filings unsealed this week show former trump campaign foreign policy adviser george papadopoulos who pleaded guilty to making false statements to federal investigators suggested a march 2016 meeting that trump meet russian president vladimir putin. j.d. gordon, a former adviser to the campaign, was in the room for the meeting and said trump heard out papadopoulos. another source said sessions, a top campaign adviser and surrogate rejected the idea. the president responded by saying he doesn't remember the meeting.

>> i don't remember much about the meeting. it was an unimportant meeting. i don't remember much. >> reporter: another campaign foreign adviser carter page tells cnn he testified before the house intelligence committee behind closed doors. he informed he was traveling to russia during the campaign. he said the trip was not tied to his role with the campaign. papadopoulos' account is placing another adviser under scrutiny. sam clovis. court documents show that papadopoulos contacted a campaign supervisor for the washington post identified as clovis about a potential trip to russia to meet russian officials. the supervisor responded and encouraged papadopoulos to make the trip. papadopoulos' account was unsealed the day of the indictments to paul manafort and rick gates. in the indictment, it was stated

they received $75 million and laundered the money through scores of foreign corporations and partnerships and bank accounts. manafort and gates pleaded not guilty to the charges which cover activities prior to trump's presidential campaign. we are learning of another meeting with a trump campaign associate and government official for russia during the campaign that was not revealed before. carter page served as adviser during the campaign confirmed to me that in july of 2016 while on a visit to moscow, he met with a government official. the deputy prime minister of russia. now, carter page tells me this was not a formal meeting. a casual hello. they were both speaking at the same conference at the new economic school in moscow. at that conference, he met with him there. again, saying it was not a formal meeting.

earlier on friday, carter page interviewed by jake tapper and said he did not meet any government officials, russian officials, during the trip. just business people and academics. this is another case of the people in the trump campaign denied any contact with russian officials and under questioning or evidence revealed that there was meetings. the new york times reporting this is the subject of questions. during the house intelligence committee of carter page this week. jim sciutto, cnn, washington. >> jim, thank you for the reporting. in the meantime, the democrats are dealing with internal strive that has burst into the open. >> due to a book out that alleges hillary clinton used her fund raising machine to gain power within the democratic national convention. even before she was the nominee. cnn's brianna keilar explains.

>> reporter: slexplosive charge coming from the acting head of the democratic nation stall comm committee has donald trump smelling blood. >> you want to look at the book by donna brazile. >> reporter: in ex-erpts of the book, brazile said hillary clinton's campaign signed a fund raising campaign that gave her control over who the party hired and how they spent money even before winning the nomination. if the fight had been fair, one campaign would not have control of the party before the voters decided which one they wanted to lead. this was not a criminal act, but as i saw it, it compromised the integrity. a former campaign adviser said the job was to raise money.

>> hillary clinton needed to raise money to make sure that happened. the money she raised would go on to help the nominee. >> reporter: the claim reopened a rift in the democratic party. >> do you an agree it was rigged? >> yes. >> reporter: president trump seized on that comment by senator warren. who trump cause by a racist term in her native-american heritage. "pocahontas" just stated that the democrats led by crooked hillary clinton rigged the primaries. brazile fired back against trump saying today's lesson being quoted by donald trump means being misquoted by donald trump. stop trolling me. #neversaidhillaryriggedelection. this certainly feeds into the claim trump made about the primary system. this was trump two weeks before election day.

and certainly patrolling waterways. >> nypd at the ready. marathon organizers expect 2.5 million spectators and more than 50,000 runners on sunday. the u.s. president donald trump has slammed the sentence handed down friday against the u.s. soldier who deserted his post in afghanistan. >> bowe bergdahl was held captive by the taliban for five years and released in a prisoner swap. nick valencia has the latest. >> reporter: bowe bergdahl walked in court on friday at ft. bragg tense. a military judge sentenced him to be dishonorably discharged. it was the culmination of the nearly ten-year saga for the 31-year-old. he plead guilty to desertion and misbehaving. it was june 30th, 2009 when he

walked way from his post in afghanistan. he was captured by the taliban and held hostage for five years. he said he lived in a metal cage barely big enough to stretch his legs. beaten and tortured. several service members were injured. including mark allen. shot in the head and left paralyzed. in 2014, bergdahl was released in a controversial prisoner swap for five guantanamo bay detainees. during the campaign, then candidate donald trump blasted the decision and bergdahl. >> we're tired of sergeant bergdahl who is a traitor. 30 years ago he would have been shot. >> reporter: today, donald trump tweeted the sentence on bergdahl is a disgrace to the country and our military. bergdahl apologized to the soldiers who searched for him. saying my words cannot take away

welcome back to viewers in the united states and around the world. you are watching cnn newsroom. i'm george howell. >> i'm natalie allen. we have new details about the trump campaign contacts with russia. carter page says he met the deputy prime minister and they changed a kind of hello while he was in moscow during the campaign. isis is steadily losing its gain in iraq and syria. on friday, iraqi forces reclaim the terror group's last strong hold. and army liberated the town of deir ezzor. the last victories come weeks after isis lost it's self

proclaimed capital. and spain issues an arrest warrant for catalan leaders. they all failed to attend a court hearing on thursday over the bid for independence. puigdemont will cooperate with the judiciary. president trump and his wife paid respects on friday in pearl harbor, hawaii. mr. trump has stopped in hawaii on the way to asia. the 12-day trip to the pacific rim will mark the first trip to the region as u.s. president. ahead of president trump's trip, the u.s. is flexing its muscle in the region. including b-1 bombers at the korean peninsula and the several bomber mission. >> cnn was granted access to the rapid response drills off okinawa.

it happens every year, but no escaping the heightened tensions make this year's exercises different. ivan watson has more. >> reporter: pounding through the pacific ocean. the approach vehicle in the belly of the larger ship. we are watching how one of the landing craft comes on board the dark landing ship. it's a remarkable piece of engineering and it takes a coordination of dozens and dozens of sailors. some call this complicated procedure taming the dragon. we've been invited to see annual military exercises off the coast of okinawa on the board of "uss ashland." this can house hundreds of sailors and marines. a small floating city. where a visiting officer marks an important step in his military career.

a ceremony at sea where marine lieutenant jesse schmidt receives promotion to the rank of captain. the u.s. command's the largest navy. in two incidents last summer, two ships collided with merchant vessels killing 17 sailors. the navy said the accidents could have been avoided. commanders say they served as a wake-up call. >> not being complacent and use all means available to evaluate your current situation. >> reporter: in response, the navy fired eight senior officers and stepped up training and monitoring from the decks of the giant vessels. every night the chaplain leads the ship in prayer. >> keep watch over us and out of harm. >> reporter: at dawn, hundreds of marines prepare for the

simulated assault on the beach in okinawa. amphibious assault vehicles splash off the back of the "ashland." and line up for the invasion. this operation on land, sea and air requires the coordination of thousands of sailors and marines and soldiers. these exercises help prepare the armed forces for the possibility of conflict. they are also about sending a message of deterrence to u.s. enemies like north korea which continue to engage in a war of words with washington. senior commanders say the annual war games send a message to u.s. allies. >> well over 22 countries in the pacific that are friends and allies training and working together and that network quite frankly provides stability and security throughout the pacific.

>> reporter: the u.s. has been the pre-eminent military force in the pacific since world war ii. in the era of make america great again, some wonder whether the u.s. can or wants to continue playing this role here. ivan watson, cnn, okinawa, japan. an undocumented child with cerebral palsy is held in u.s. custody. the girl's attorney said she was approved for release, but it is unclear if she will be deported. she was to receive emergency surgery when her ambulance was stopped by the u.s. border patrol. >> the agents escorted rosa maria hernandez to the state of texas. they detained her once she received treatment. rosa's mother says the girl has been living in the united states since she was three months old. in the u.s. territory of puerto rico, there is still no

light at the end of the very long tunnel for so many people there. more than six weeks since hurricane maria tore through the island. >> despite the governor's office touting the latest figures. we have leyla santiago with more. >> reporter: what you cannot see is life. without power. >> this is the only light he has. you can see it is a little light from the christmas tree, it looks like, it is powered from a car battery. i know it is difficult to see. i'll light it with my cell phone. >> reporter: six weeks after hurricane maria, luis sleeps next to the window. he is one of many. satellite images show the island before maria. after and now. not much has changed.

puerto rican power authority claims there is no way knowing how many are in the dark. we called each municipality. 78. communication still not reliable. of those reached, the overwhelming majority say most people do not have power. nearly one-third say the entire town is in the dark. and yet the power authority and the governor's office insist they are on track. when it comes to power restoration, they say they are at 37% on the island. but that's the percentage of power generation. how much power is produced, not how much actually making it to homes and businesses. a big difference when yyou ask one of the unions. he said you can technically have no one with power, but still have 100% generation. that's why he thinks the numbers are questionable. >> reporter: we noticed government officials changed how

they report the numbers on power. initially using the percentage of clients with power. something they denied until we reminded them of this tweet by the governor's mansion. retweeted by the power authority listing clients with service two weeks after maria. the governor's office said it was a mistake. the tweet was deleted shortly after cnn asked about it. >> when we first approached the governor's office and the power authority, we were told they always reported generation and not clients. >> i'm not sure on the fact. but initially and what i can state is when we started restoring critical, it is more you can identify who better are the clients. that is as much as i can say. it was during the very limited period of time. >> reporter: since the power authority says the numbers are no longer available, we asked the workers.

their estimate about 5% of customers may have service. not nearly as high as the percentage of generation. and he worries a bad situation may be getting worse. he believes because of the contract was canceled this will take longer. puerto rico announced it plans to cancel a controversial contract with the company hired to help bring back the island's power. he had no idea it would last this long. as he sees it politics may be another reason he and countless puerto ricans may not be getting power anytime soon. leyla santiago, cnn, san juan, puerto rico. >> joined here by ivan. it doesn't seem right. >> in december. it is horrific. we go three days without power and we freak out. after imagine what happens there. and i have watched the weather .

port angeles to wells creek snotel with 17 inches. impressive. more on the way. quiet in seattle up to i-5 and bellingham. we have another weather system moving from the pacific down toward the north and west. boise seeing a mix. this is continuing to billings. winter weather advisories posted there. a couple of inches of accumulation. if this were january, we would sneeze at this. it's early. that's why folks are paying attention with winter weather advisories all the way from minneapolis through billings where they turn to winter storm warnings as as well as sierras in california. color we have not seen for some time. indicating 12 to 18 inches. this is the highest elevation as you get further and further closer to sea level. you will see diminishing totals. it is the boundary. you can follow that and that's where we have weather across the
