threatening texts from him. >> authorities say they recovered three weapons. one at the scene and two from kelly's vehicle. the texas governor said this state had denied him a license to carry a gun. on the scene for us in sutherland springs, texas. you got the latest on the investigation. what more do we know about this domestic trouble with the gunman's mother-in-law and how he got his weapons? >> officials said the gunman expressed anger and there was a domestic situation involved in this entire thing. as you just mentioned, officials told us that he had sent threatening texts to his mother-in-law and one official, a source with knowledge of the investigation told cnn that the mother-in-law received a threatening text from him the morning of the shooting. that's what we can tell you about the situation with his

in-laws. his in-laws did attend this church. the first baptist church on, on occasion, but they were not there at the time. the sheriff of the county told us that the wife of the shooter, possibly an estranged wife may have attended this church. he did have a connection to this church through his in-laws. as to how he purchased the weapons, he had at least three weapons that he had purchased. four he had purchased and he had with him here at the scene. two hand guns were found in the car and the ar-556 assault rifle. he purchased two weapons in colorado. they believe he purchased the ar assault rifle in the an san antonio area last year. there was a question whether he was legally able to purchase

them for assaulting his spouse and child and was incarcerated for about 12 months and he got out and remarried in 2014. he was trying to piece together how he was able to purchase a weapon when legally he should not have been able to purchase that kind of a weapon with the record he had. one other riveting piece of information coming from the news conference, wolf. as he sped away from the scene, devin patrick kelly called his father and said he had been shot and didn't think he was going to make it. they believe he took his own with a self inflicted gunshot wound. he may have done that. it's not clear if he dieed from a self inflicted gunshot wound or when he exchanged gunfire outside this church. >> with the record he had, it's hard to believe that the shooter worked as a security guard for a

water park for a short period of time over the summer. how did he get that job with that record and spent a year in prison for beating up his wife and a young kid. >> he was a security guard at a water park in texas, about 30 miles or so away from here. that's his hometown. how he got the job is not clear. we are piecing that together. he was an unarmed security guard. he tried to get a license to carry a firearm and according to the governor, he was denied a license. they are trying to piece together how he came upon the ability to get this ar-556 assault rifle he bought last

year. >> lots of questions being raised. thanks very, very much. the youngest victim of the texas church massacre was just 17 months old. the oldest was 77. one of those killed was the pastor's 14-year-old daughter. his wife spoke out through her grief. >> we don't want to overshadow the other lives lost yesterday. we lost more than belle yesterday. one thing that gives me a sliver of encouragement is that belle was surrounded by her church family that she loved fiercely. our building is probably beyond repair. and the few of us that are left behind lost tragically yesterday. as senseless as this tragedy was, our sweet belle would not have been able to deal with losing so much family yesterday.

>> diane gallagher has more on the devastating losses in this close-knit community. the sheriff said nearly every member of the congregation was affected in some way including the pastor and his wife. how are they coping with this trage tragedy? >> wolf, as you heard there, to sort of try to come and support one another, i want to talk a bit about 14-year-old annabelle pomeroy. they said they don't want her to overshadow them. she was so dedicated to her faith and such a beautiful soul. i want to you listen to video we have of her. because this church did tend to videotape and broadcast services from back in july, signing with it. what she thought about forgiveness. >> if you believe in him, you can get out of your cage. you can not be -- you can forgive people and stay with

your friends. even though satan has a target for you, you still believe in him and you can still believe in him and have faith with him. >> those words from that young little girl seemingly holding people together leaning on their faith. another purely tragic moment in this shooting. a family with members of the family including a pregnant woman killed this this. i want to go through because we have spoke tone a family member who helped us identify them. brian and karla hol comb. brian was the substitute pastor in the shooting. their son, danny. danny's daughter noah who was 17 months old and crystal hol comb who was tof their other son was two months pregnant and three of crystal's five children. the other two and her husband

all in the hospital. the ripple effect on that one family beyond the 26 showing that this shooting wiped out a generation of that family right now. something that this community is so small, just a few hundred people is going to have to cope with not just in the coming weeks, but forever. >> such a sad, sad story. thanks very, very much. i top the get perspective from the law enforcement analyst. the former police chief and philadelphia police commissioner and thanks for coming in. authorities say this killer, this gunman sent his mother-in-law very threatening messages the morning of the massacre and the family did not contact authorities. that's not unusual, but it's significant. >> it is significant. we don't know the nature of the threats if they were physical or whatever. it's important to remember that this woman has been dealing with this guy for a long time now.

i'm not it's not the first time that he has done that in terms of threats. he assaulted his wife and child to a point where he did a year in jail. he had issues for a long time. of course when we look in retrospect, why didn't you call the police? at the time how could you possibly know he was going to shoot the people that he shot in church. >> i know you are not an expert in gun laws in texas or oklahoma or colorado, but it's a fact that when he served in the u.s. air force, he was court-marti court-martialed for bad conduct for beating up his wife and a little kid. spent a year in prison and dishonorably discharged for bad conduct. he bought four weapons after that. is that normal? common sense would tell you this

guy would be denied a gun. my understanding is he was defied one permit to carry. >> to carry a concealed one. he was able to purchase an assault weapon. it makes no sense. too many loopholes about how to fix it and take action that quite frankly that's not going to happen. >> he had a job as a security guard at a water park? given that record. >> they ran a background check and these are military records and whether or not they had access to that particular file. i don't know the answer to that. again, probably his behavior is what led to his dismissal. this guy had a troubled history and no one picked up on it. then again, how do you know he will come in and murder that many people in a church on a sunday. >> if you have a bad military record, isn't that made available in terms of purchasing guns or getting security background checks and stuff like

that? dealing with the public and the public security? >> you would think so. i don't know if that's something that is standard. you can get into the files. i'm not certain if that's the case. you can look at your state files and find out whether or not the person is arrested for a fell me. whether or not you can get the background military i'm not certain. >> they will do a complete investigation with local authorities in texas and federal authorities and the fbi is involved and the atf. they will do the complete review. if you were part of that review, what lessons would you learn to make sure this doesn't happen again. >> with the current laws we have, you can't make certain that it won't happen again. we will be back here again talking about another mass shooting. the only this i think that will change is the location where it occurred. how many times do we have to realize we have a problem and look for a solution without infringing upon second amendment rights. i'm not anti-gun, but we can't

>> i just arrived here in pyongyang and met with officials here. they are watching very closely what president trump does and listening to what he says. he is soon heading to south korea, a very sensitive spot as the president will be standing and speaking just miles from where i am in the north korean capital. they warned the u.s. trip not to do anything in their words, crazy. north korea is ready to respond powerfully. it's something they believe the united states for its rhetoric and putting the carry offs off the peninsula, they believe the united states is pushing the situation in the region to the brink of an all out war. it has been more than weeks since they conducted a live military test like an explosion or a missile launch. in fact the lead story in the local newspapers here, visiting a cosmetics factory. you have seen a number of images of the north korean leader

no more strategic patience. it's going to be full force ahead, if you will. there is going to be a change in the u.s. tone and a change in u.s. policy towards north korea. >> wolf, what we need is a comprehensive strategy that brings all the tools of american power. pressure through sanctions and increased defense to make sure we can defend against threats and deter action from them and providing a diplomatic off-ramp. pressure is not an end and has to lead to somewhere and the goal remains denuclearizing the peninsula. what i don't see is the actual bringing together of all the tools in a comprehensive strategy. i have seen a lot of the president's talking about tough words. i think that's fine if it is matched up with the actual elements of a strategy. that's what i think is lacking we have seen him contradict secretary tillerson. that under cuts anything that we would be trying to do.

deadliest in modern u.s. history. let's get some perspective. tom, give us perspective on this. >> these numbers are sobering if you look at what happened in terms of the big mass shootings in our country. las vegas in october, 58. the pulse nightclub, 49. virginia tech in 2007, 32 killed. december 2012, 27 at sandy hook and the first baptist church arrived. 26 killed. in the past 36 days, a little over a month, we had the shooting in las vegas and sutherland springs. i want to notice something about these numbers and a different statistic. if you say how does this all happen. look at the overall number of mass shootings in this country in the past 310 days, 307 mass shootings. how can that february the other

member is over a period of years. sutherland springs and las vegas, all of us agree they are big and a stranger to the victims and shoots a lot of people. they are not robbing a store. this is just that. gun violence archive, the group behind this metric is saying any time four people are shot in the same place in the same incident, not fatalities, but shot, you can have two drug gangs shooting at each other or someone who killed four members of their family and themselves, that would be a mass shooting under this metric. more importantly, and this is worth bearing in mind, if you go by archives metrics here, the new number out of the cdc said after 15 years of gun violence

those who are not entitled to have guns don't get them. >> is it your understanding because we have to check that the u.s. air force and military would automatically notify the authorities about criminal behavior while serving in the military. is that relayed to states in terms of ability to purchase weapons legally? >> i don't know the specifics of this case, but i know those are involved in domestic violence and those involved in criminal activities should be flagged and are not eligible to have hand guns. there are statutes that prohibit this. i'm not sure exactly what this particular person's background was, whether it would have been picked up or not. >> the president tweeted after learning about the texas attack. he tweeted this. he said may god be with the people of sutherland springs, texas. the fbi and law enforcement are on the scene. i am monitoring the situation from japan.

contrast to that, his first tweet after the new york terror attack last week was this. in new york city, looks like another attack by a sick and deranged person. law enforcement is following closely. not in the usa. some suggest a difference in tone based on the reaction to what happened in new york and based on the president's reaction to what happened in texas. your thoughts? >> we have seen the president react differently in circumstances where we would have hoped he would have been there to unite the community. no one support this is type of behavior. as a community, we need to come together. this is a horrible situation to have to to deal with. we need to come together and make it clear, we will stand with those who have been victimized and unite to keep america safe. not try to advance a political agenda. the president is more interested in advancing a political agenda

than bringing the country together. >> after the las vegas massacre, 58 people were killed and hundreds injured. there was a call to outlaw the bump stocks that allow a weapon to in effect become an automatic weapon and kill a lot of people within a matter of seconds. a couple of weeks ago, democrats in the house introduced a bill banning the high capacity magazines. do you think there is a realistic effort that there will really be any change as far as legislation is concerned? >> we are waiting you are exactly right. bump stocks have no legitimacy in the private market place and should be outlawed. you would think it would be a quick ponce to make sure they are no longer legal in the united states. i would have thought the large capacity magazines would have been outlawed by now after sandy hook and other tragedies in which the large capacity opportunities caused multiple
