all. mark savidge live in alabama. how is this story about roy moore playing there? >> reporter: good morning, chris. this is all coming down as a huge shock here on a number of levels. of course the seriousness of the allegations being made against moore. on top of that, the timing just weeks before a critical election. and they all go back to this town and the courthouse right here. the trump administration responding to the bombshell allegations that alabama senate candidate roy moore sexually molested a 14-year-old girl over 30 years ago. with a nod to his conservative supporters. >> the president believes we cannot allow a mere allegation, in this case one from many years ago, to destroy a person's life. >> reporter: and establishment republicans like mitch mcconnell. >> however, the president also bleaches if these are true, judge moore will do the right thing and step aside. >> reporter: mcconnell saying

prohibited by state law. do you know beast ality, the relationship between man and beast, is prohibited in every state? >> reporter: one of the things that impacts here, not just politics that we are talking about, alisyn. it is also about faith, which is deeply important in this part of alabama. roy moore made it a point to stand strongly for what he says are his deep, conservative religious beliefs. if allegations are true they call into question all of that for many of his supporters. >> absolutely, martin. we will see how this plays out today and in the days to come. thank you very much. republicans in washington are reeling over these allegations against roy moore. could the scandal put the narrow majority at risk? brianna keilar is live on capitol hill with more. hi, brianna >> reporter: hi, alisyn. that is the concern after the elections on tuesday night where
4:06 am
democra democrats swept mayoral, gubernatorial and state races. instead, the focus was on roy moore as republicans struggled to deal with this topic. take a look. >> allegations against roy moore? >> -- accusations against roy moore, sir? >> good-bye. >> reporter: incredibly awkward as they smile. the official word is that if these allegations are true, roy moore should step aside. but make no mistake, they do not want roy moore here on capitol hill. and they're hoping certainly that that's not going to be the case.
4:07 am
but they also realize that it's out of their control. the former chief of staff to mitch mcconnell saying publicly on the record, this is what happens when reckless, in competent idiots like steve bannon recruit candidates. republicans are had issues with roy moore. he was so controversial. he wasn't their pick. they realize they may not have the ability to control this. it comes down to the state party. if they're going to ask the secretary of state to in validate moore's nomination as the republican candidate. and it comes down to the alabama voters. roy moore is going to be on the ballot. really some of this out of senate republicans's hands. but that may be part of the reason why you're hearing them say if true. they're not necessarily sure exactly where this fervent republican base is. >> interesting to figure out the timing of all of this. thank you very much for the reporting. joining us is chris cillizza and
4:08 am
a.b.stoddar. obviously republicans don't need this. this is not what they want to. you can see them all across the gamut. you see him gritting his teeth and trying to shoo reporters out of the room with senator john mccain who has been sort of a truth teller or at least unplugged in the last couple of months. he just unequivocally said -- we have a tweet. the allegations against roy moore are deeply disturbing and disqualifying. he should immediately step aside and allow the people of alabama to elect a candidate they can be proud of. what are you seeing happen? >> well, it's interesting, chris went on twitter that these are not allegations orac saeugzs
4:09 am
because the women are actually telling the stories themselves and accusing him of doing this. people should read the piece because it's pretty solid. the republicans are in an awful jam. alabama republicans saying this is fine. you have every republican in the senate in washington, including vice president mike pence coming with a very stern statement saying if true, this is not acceptable. this cannot be proven. roy moore is defiant. what's interesting about sort of the larger question of what goes on in the republican party, this is an amazing situation. republicans in alabama defending moore are basically admitting it's true and saying there is nothing wrong with it. and steve bannon saying it's all just a spirit from jeff bezos of the "washington post" and amazon
4:10 am
and he's, you know, going to be as defiant as roy moore about this. there are people saying this is only going to increase his support. all the evangelicals will rally to support just like they did with president trump after the "access hollywood" tape was released. so don't be surprised if senate republicans will have to turn around and say they have backed the nominee and everything is fine. unless roy moore finds the better angels inside of him if this is true, i don't see anything changing. i see him winning the senate race and coming to town. >> they do have a problem if they have to step down. his name understate is law would stay on the ballot. he would certainly split the ticket. that level of analysis kind of betrays the significant of this. the moral agency, which is so important to that party with the political expedient seu. bannon comes out and says, the timing -- you talk about the timing because you don't want to
4:11 am
talk about the substance of the suggestions. these things often come out at the end of races. by the way, probably plays in favor. they don't have a lot of time to decide what to do. if he gets elected, it is hard to remove him. when you look at this, what is the question for republican leadership right now about how to deal with this? >> yeah. look, moral agency is critical to both parties, right? you have to show that you are willing to stand up for what is right even when it is not politically the most -- >> christianity very often roy moore is running as a christian -- >> yes. . no question. the statements that you saw -- well, you didn't see mccouple say anything in that one, that clip that you played, which is amazing. but he put out a paper statement essentially saying what every other member of congress said. if true, then roy moore has to step down. that feels like a band-aid to me that won't suffice all the way
4:12 am
through december 12th if moore stays defiant and stays in the race. to me it's not a he said, she said here. it's 30 sources. it's four women named and on the record. >> so it's not like they dug up some democrats to come out with a bunch of accusations. >> four women who did not know each other, four women who did not reach out to the "washington pos post". to me, chris, it just feels in adequate to say this is fake news. what does that mean? it has no meaning. when you're talking about allegations, accusations that are this serious, i don't think any right-minded person should just say, yeah, this is fake news. he said the most important thing. read the story. i guarantee you if you read the story you are not coming out thinking this is some slap dash
4:13 am
attempt piece. i think what roy moore said is in adequate. that will come into play with senate republicans. the number four ranking relationship in leadership said if he does the right thing it won't be a problem for us nationally. that means roy moore getting out. i don't think that's happening. >> roy more said this is more than just fake news. he was active on twitter. the forces of evil will lie, cheat, and steal, even inflict physical harm if they believe it will silence and shut up christian conservatives like you and me. that is one of the four tweets we have. he is at the moment digging in. and by the way, i think that you have made the point, when we have seen this deluge of accusations against powerful men, the powerful men who have admitted it in some way or apologized for something have lost their jobs.
4:14 am
i'm thinking of kevin spacey, harvey weinstein. the powerful man who didn't admit anything about the accusations and called it locker room talk was elected to the prison seu. so you have two models in how you can go with this. >> right. he will be urged by supporters and steve bannon, who is championing his candidacy and is banking a lot on this literally with millions of dollars for his insurgent revolution of purifying the republican party of all establishment in couple bents. he will urge everyone to continue to fight. it is remarkable that the republican officials defending him basically agreed that the story was true but that it was fine. what a statement that says about what alabama christian conservatives will do december 12th. >> the state auditor, ziegler,
4:15 am
who said in terms of the age disparate -- >> okay. listen to this. >> this is how we do it by the way. i tee it up and then you do these dramatic reads. >> there is nothing to see her. the allegations are a man in his early 30s dated teenage girls. even "washington post" said he never had sexual intercourse and never attempted. take joseph and mary. mary was a teenager and joseph was an adult carpenter. they became parents of skwraoes is us. there's just nothing immoral or illegal here. maybe just a little bit unusual. well, that's not true. it is illegal. >> it is state law in alabama now if you try to lure someone under the age of 16 into your home for the purpose of sexual intercourse, that is a felony. so watching what the christian supporters will do the actual voters will truly be interesting. i believe cynically and sadly in our tribal politics of late 2017
4:16 am
that people will say, oh, he's not a democrat. bezos is out to get him. they will rationalize everything. it is what we have seen with people rationalizing. it is not about whether or not character counts, whether or not it's moral agency. in the end this year what we have seen the most of is that it is always about their opponent and not about what they have done. >> and if you put party over principle again and again, true of either party, at the end of the day what you have as a party is not anything that you want to defend or sell. winning a single seat in alabama is the focus. they worry that doug jones, who polls suggest is closer than you would think, would win the seat. he would hold it effectively for two years. a democrat running in alabama would have a tough time winning. but the bigger damage to the
4:17 am
party of saying, this is fine. this is fine. this is okay. just switch it around. imagine if it was a democrat and what those same people would be saying. i guarantee it wouldn't be joseph and mary comparisons. >> all right. chris, amy, thank you very much. so is trump going to meet with putin or not? will the president of the united states make this important meeting with the russian president? first yes, then maybe. now there is a scheduling conflict. what do you make of the vagaries of the certainty about this meeting? >> reporter: good morning, chris. it's not uncommon for meetings like this particularly on the russian side to not exactly be scheduled. this happens in previous meetings. i can tell you trying to put can you tell through all of this is difficult. a formal meeting is off. the kremlin is saying a chance encounter is unlikely. this is all shining an even

brighter spotlight on the russian cloud that is still hanging over the white house. a highly anticipated encounter between trump and putin under negotiation for days is awash in confusion this morning. white house press secretary sarah sanders telling reporters a scheduling conflict will prevent a formal meeting, although the two leaders could still cross paths. >> in terms of a scheduled formal meeting, there's not one on the cole dar. . but there will be one. >> just today? >> reporter: the trip is overshadowed by a series of events at home, including developments in the russia investigation, which is growing even closer to the oval office. stephen miller, seen here with the president aboard air force one, is part of robert mueller's probe. sources close to the investigation tell cnn miller is the highest ranking aide still

working at the white house known to have spoken to investigators. his role in the firing of fbi director james comey was among topics discussed as part of the inquiry into possible obstruction of justice. keith schiller also wrapped up in the investigation. schiller testified behind closed doors to the house intelligence committee this week that he rejected an offer to send five women to trump's hotel room on the trip to moscow for the miss universe pageant. schiller told house members he took the offer as a joke and mr. trump, then a private citizen, laughed it off. the president remaining focused on a series of priorities in hearings today amplifying his calls for north korea nuclear ambitions. >> i am always going to put america first, the same way that i expect all of you in this room
4:20 am
to put your countries first. >> reporter: coming up shortly here, president trump and president putin are heading to a dinner with other world leaders. so it is possible they could cross paths there, even have a conversation. they also have an opportunity for that tomorrow. but alisyn, this is all playing out against the back drop here in vietnam of da nang, the site of the first u.s. marines who came here at the beginning of the vietnam war some 52 years ago. of course the view of the united states here has changed over the years. one thing is not. of course in america we call it the vietnam war. here in vietnam they call it the american war. alisyn. >> all right. thank you very much, jeff. so there are these mixed messages about a trump and putin meeting. if they do meet, what will they discuss? our national security experts join us next.

"the wall street journal" adding new details to a story first reported by cnn. special counsel bob mueller
4:25 am
investigating an alleged plan for fired national security adviser michael palestinian to forcibly remove a turkish cleric living in pennsylvania. the journal reports flynn was offered a $15 million to deliver the cleric to the turkish government. one of the reporters who broke the story joins us now. thank you for being on the show. appreciate it. there was a meeting in september allegedly about this. now one in december. that would be after the election and after flynn was named as the national security adviser. is that right? >> right. what we understand, the fbi is investigating is an alleged meeting that took place in a report at the 21 club in new york city sometime mid-december in which mike flynn attended. they have asked at least four people about this. and from we understand there was
4:26 am
discussions as much as $15 million, the possible involvement of mike flynn's son, who was an adviser at the time as well to mr. flynn who had been nominated and named as national security adviser. it is remarkable meeting that would happen as -- after this earlier september meeting, which as you noted "the wall street journal" reported and then cnn also reported exclusively with one of the participants gyms woolsy. >> what does that mean? help us understand his involvement and what your sources reveal about what the expectations were at the second meeting. >> the expectations of the second meeting were to get him out of the country. as you know -- >> had so these people thought that the national security adviser, who was kidnapping
4:27 am
somebody? >> that's the remarkable part of this allegation. what's being investigated is there would be cash payments involved with this removal. someone at the time was working for the transition, had been nominated. then became the national security adviser before he was then fired by the president. it is being investigated seriously. we have known about this allegation for quite some time. with the work of my colleague shane harris and our justice department reporter, we were able to find some corroborating information. and i think the fbi investigation has gone forward. as you recall, you were asking about woolsy. he unwittingly showed up at this
4:28 am
meeting. he didn't know that's what it was going to be about. and he blew the whistle in a story that ran in the wall street journal. and then he went on cnn later that day to talk about it. >> the timing really relevant. there's no question that flynn has been a proponent of getting rid of this cleric. he wrote an op ed that came out on election day about exactly this. but if this happened, this kind of meeting with this exchange and potential kidnapping of a legal resident, that has some heavy political and legalism indications. >> very serious implications. obviously if you're working for the government even in the transition, you can't accept cash for any official action. >> yeah. >> that's considered bribery. our understanding is cash was discussed. >> it has been reported that mr.
4:29 am
flynn was worried about the implication of his son. in terms of the mentality of what's going on, james grimaldi, thank you for coming on "new day" as always. >> you're welcome. >> chris, let's discuss with samantha and cnn phil mudd. samantha, you just heard the reporting there. if michael flynn, the incoming national security adviser, was operating outside the bounds of legal u.s. extradition and trying to send this muslim cleric back to president erdogan in turkey, what does that mean? >> that means we should all be worried. it is no secret that president trump and the administration are distracted by the investigation at a time when they should be focused on direct national security threats like, for example, russian meddling in the
4:30 am
election. >> yeah. i think it's fair to say that much of this 12-day asia trip, hugely significant, overshadowed by all the latest threads that involve michael flynn. >> exactly. we don't know if trump will meet with vladimir putin which means trump isn't going to have an opportunity to hold putin accountable for interfering in the election, u.s. technology platforms. and he's leaving the door wide open to another russian attack and sending a signal to leaders like kim jong-un that the united states doesn't respond to direct attacks on the homeland. that's a dangerous message to send to a guy who has threatened to launch missiles at the united states. >> surprising that they aren't pushing for it. you would be on safe footing.
4:31 am
phil mudd, the implications. there has been a political spin, whatever flynn did, it's about money, accounting, fara requirements, it's an acronym. look it up for yourself. this is different. that is after the election. in december. what does this mean in terms of the implications for the investigation? >> there's a couple of differences here. as you mentioned, this happened after the election. the simple question is whether something illegal happened. whether there was a conversation about money and exchange. number one, ethics. if there is a pre-existing relationship with the turks, when you go into an official position in the white house, you ought to be declaring on paper what your previous relationships are so when there are follow-on conversations in the oval
4:32 am
office, everybody knows general flynn may have a perspective but he had a pre-existing relationship with the turks. the second subsidiary question is even more interesting. we had the mueller team drop 1001, lying to a federal officer on pop tkop loss, who was part of the trump team during the campaign. if his son knows something embarrassing, and he will be interviewed separately by the fbi and his son lies -- i'm not saying he will. but that is something they should be concerned about, the feds will drop a violation on him. that is lying to a federal officer. he ought to be worried that his son is completely truthful in that interview. mueller has shown that you will take you to the wood shed if you're not truthful. >> it is a felony that carries up to five years. >> are you going to make me go look it up? >> i don't know why you don't like getting great information? some would say it's our job.
4:33 am
i think this is more by legal construction. if he had this meeting, and they will have to vet it out, this is a potential kidnapping plot of a legal resident of the united states. sam, am i getting the analysis wrong? there is an extradition policy for a legal resident here being returned to turkey. say there was no money or wasn't for this. take it out of the equation, okay, yeah, i'll get him out. we will put him on a private plane, get him out of here outside the normal procedure. why isn't that kidnapping? >> well, it -- >> it didn't happen. but i'm saying if that were the discussion. >> what i can tell you is what i was at the white house, this was definitely not the thing we ever discussed when it came to bilateral relations. talked about leader-to-leader conversations. we certainly didn't talk about cash exchanges to remove people out of the united states and ship them back to turkey. >> thank you for that

in the past 24 hours, two high-profile men have been accused of misconduct. roy moore accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old when he was in his 30s. moore calls allegations a political smear. also, five women have come forward in a "new york times" report of louis c.k. he has not responded to those allegations. joining is susan ho who spoke out in our townhall last night. and a reva martin. the conversation just continues every day. i don't think i'm exaggerating to say that there are new allegations. they come out against powerful
4:39 am
men with almost household names every day. so when you see now louisc.c. and judge moore, what are your thoughts? >> you're right, alisyn. you and i have spent a lot of time this week talking about these issues. hearing the women again talk about the fear of retribution. the fear of coming out in terms of what it would do to their careers. the manager said he never threatened them. he didn't exactly deny talking to them and perhaps asking them to stop telling their stories of louisc.k. masturbating in front of them in a hotel room. one of the big takeaways is even when women come out, the common theme is the fear, the fear of
4:40 am
being aoeugs lated, ostracized. >> career suicide is something that we have heard about. >> absolutely. the person that harassed me during our fund-raising process, we were raising money for our company. we found out there were allegations that went back 10 years and that there was actually a woman who at his previous fund had picked him off her board because he was propositioning her for sex. >> if only you had known.
4:41 am
it ends up then creating other victims, other accusers. because you go into it blindly and don't know. you asked a question last night at the cnn townhall. i just want to play it for our viewers in case they missed it. they say this is the elephant in the room. listen to this. >> how can america drive real progress in addressing sexual harassment of women and memory in hollywood, in everyday places when we have a man sitting in the white house who has posted on top of grabbing women's crotches and currently facing charges of sexual harassment himself. >> gretchen carlson says she gets that question every day when she speaks out about sexual harassment. have you ever heard that one? >> i asked the question because for me it's not that we don't have laws in place. we shouldn't have to have laws to dictate what common decency
4:42 am
is. the core of it, the culture is broken. women in the workplace aren't seen as colleagues, as leaders, as equals. when we see the message being sent out, which is -- the message that we want to send is no matter how much money or power you have, you can't engage in this behavior. it's not okay. there will be consequences. how can we really be serious about that when the elephant in the room is, hello, who is sitting in the white house right now. >> areva, what's the answer to that? >> well, the reality, alisyn, is that powerful men have been and continue to be given the benefit of the doubt when we talk about sexual harassment and saults. when that tape came out with respect to donald trump. the reason that the country should not count him as as a candidate for presidency.
4:43 am
that continues to happen from the highest level in the white house, ceos and men in other paufpl positions. think how long it takes for other stories to come forward. in some instances, we're talking about decades and decades of stories about abuse. in many cases it takes women, not just one but multiple women to come forward before anyone starts to believe that these stories are true. that's just something we have to continue to deal with, continue to fight against legislatively and from a culture change. we are starting to see a breakthrough. there is a light at the end of the tunnel. i'm a civil rights lawyer. i have been involved for two decades now. something feels different about this moment. >> it sure does when you see powerful men like roger ailes, harvey weinstein, bill o'reilly, kevin spacey, people are talking about it, they're naming names. people are losing their jobs. people are having to reedit movies at great expense because they don't want the liability of
4:44 am
having one of these men. susan, do you think this is a real tipping point? does it feel the same way to you? >> i hope so. i hope this drives real action and real change. as we were talking about last night, it's not an issue that we as women can say, hey, we're going the talk bit. we're going to fix it. do i need men to be just as involved in the solution. if you are not actively doing something to address the problem, you're part of it. >> susan ho, thank you very much for your question last night. thanks for taking part in the townhall. areva martin, great to see you. i'm sure we will talk soon. >> you have to keep it in the dialogue. if it goes away, susan makes a strong point. if men aren't involved, the culture won't change. coming up, they go beyond the call every day. we get exclusive access to new york's hostage negotiation unit next. i love it. that's why you should be a keurig man! full-bodied. are you sure you're describing the coffee and not me?

the chairman of the house judiciary committee, republican congressman bob goodlatte says he will not run for re-election in 2018. now one of his most outspoken critics says he is considering running for the seat. andy parker is the father of the reporter alison parker who was shot on tv two years ago. he has slashed with him on the issue of gun control and he joins us now. nice to see you. >> it's good to be talking about another alisyn. >> my dad's name was andy, so i have always thought of you because, obviously, what happened to your daughter, alison, was so sickening and so hideous and it touched so many of us in the news industry and beyond that something like this would happen. mr. parker, i remember talking to you. i mean immediately after alison was murdered. and you said what so many victims say, which is i won't let this be in vain, i won't let my daughter have been murdered

for nothing, i'm going to take some action. but here you are. you actually have done that. you did take this moment and were galvanized by it, so where are you today? >> well, i'm still fighting the fight. and, you know, i tell you, the musings that i have about considering a run, never saying never, it sure created quite a buzz, but i've got to tell you, alisyn, i'm a long way from throwing my hat in the ring. there's hurdles that i have to consider. chief of which is whether i can be more effective as an advocate to help elect other progressive candidates across the commonwealth and the country versus being one member of congress. frankly, i would -- if i could wave the magic wand, i'd clone chris hurst, who just won a delegate seat in rural virginia, and put him in there to run,

well. and i think that, again, i frankly would prefer to see someone like sam osule who lives in roanoke, he lives there, he has good name recognition, someone like that to step up and run. i've got to tell you, either way, a democrat has to take that seat because the two -- of the two candidates on the republican side that have announced, one guy, ben klein, he makes goodlatte look like bernie sanders. he is so extreme, just an extreme right-winger. it's the kind of person that virginia voters completely rejected last tuesday. and that blue tidal wave shows that maybe there is a tipping point out there, per your earlier segment. i think people are waking up and saying, you know, stuff has got to change. >> yeah. well, listen, as i said, the story of your daughter's murder
