me live to respond. president trump has never been shy about sharing his opinion but for 12 days, he mostly doned questions on gop senate candidate for alabama roy moore. that changed with dramatic effect on tuesday was a startling presidential endorsement for a man accused of sexual assault by women when they were teens. several women have come forward. one of them says she was just 14 years old at the time. the president however dismissing their accounts in favor of moore's denials. >> roy moore denies it. >> what about the women? >> by the way he gives a total denial and i do have to say, 40 years is a long time. he's run eight races and this has never come up. so 40 years is a long time. the women are trump voters. most of them are trump voters. all you can do is you have to do what you have to do. >> cnn's senior white house correspondent jeff zeleny is in
10:02 am
west palm beach where the president is spending the holidays. you're learning this was a deliberate decision by the president himself. >> it was indeed. this is something the president i'm told has been talking about for the last several days inside the west wing with his advisers as so much else has been playing out on the national stage about these allegations of sexual misconduct, about these allegations of sexual abuse. this is something that the situation changed from 12 days or so ago at least in the eyes of the president in terms of it became muddled with all the noise and confusion. he also i'm told you know, saw some similarities to his own presidential campaign. saw similarities to the accusations made against him which he denied, of course, back in 2016. more importantly than anything else, this is politics. the white house certainly wants to keep that seat in republican hands and also saw that roy moore was not going anywhere, he was defiant and standing firm.
10:03 am
so despite what the republican establishment was doing, everyone urging him to drop out of the race, the president sided with his base anddon something that was probably expected all along. he decided to try and split the difference here but by going with moore, he keeps himself rather on the same side as some of his supporters down in alabama and elsewhere, jim. >> going with roy moore and dismissing accounts of those women. jeff zeleny following the president. thanks very much. let's get perspective from democratic senator chris coons of delaware joining me live from wilmington. thanks for taking the time during the thanksgiving holiday. i'd like your reaction to this remarkable statement from the president. in effect not only saying he backs roy moore for the seat but saying in effect he dismisses the accounts of these women in favor of moore's denials. >> well, jim, there have been a number of striking very manies in recent days about very senior figures in entertainment and in
10:04 am
politics around allegations of sexual abuse and harassment. it's my hope our country is on the verge of a real reckoning with what is a long and tragic history of widespread misbehavior by men in various professional settings. obviously, our president is someone who in the course of his campaign was accused by.women of sexual abuse and was caught on tape bragging about a sexual assault incident. so i'm struck that he's choosing to weigh in to this particular matter. as for roy moore, as the vice chairman of the senate ethics committee, i shouldn't comment on anything specific to mr. moore because he may well end up in a matter that may at some point come before the ethics committee. >> let me ask you this. you have heard some republicans say well, let him win the election and we'll expel him and then the republican governor of alabama can appoint a republican replacement. they get their republican senator, their vote for tax reform. speaking to your republican colleagues, is there talk of
10:05 am
that or plans being made to do that if moore is to win the seat? >> jim, think there is supreme court precedent that makes it fairly clear that unless there is some disqualification of someone elected duly elected by a state will be seated. at that point, there may then be an ethics committee process. i shouldn't comment further. >> let's talk about tax reform because clearly, the president's stating quite clearly that in effect, he's choosing tax reform as the priority here saying he needs that vote. we heard kellyanne conway set that up the day before. as you're watching votes there and we've had a couple folks come out, for instance, lisa murkowski of alaska saying now she's supported the mandate being repealed as part of this tax reform bill. as you're counting votes, do you believe the republicans have the votes to pass this tax plan as it stands? >> as it was with health care reform with aca replace and
10:06 am
repeal back in august, i think this will be a very close vote. it will be a squeaker. i've heard from a number of republican colleagues, friends, that they have real concerns about blowing up the deficit and the debt. this bill is projected to add at least $1.5 trillion to america's debt. and there's a number of folks i think in both parties who had far prefer to do a deficit neutral tax bill that would lower corporate rates, that would increase investment in infrastructure, that would expand child tax credits. do a number of things that could command real bipartisan support. if republicans continue to insist on moving ahead with a republican only budget buster bill, i think it will be very close and it may well fail in the end. >> let me ask you this. your fellow senator from delaware gave us his insight into a meeting between white house officials and senate democrats. senator tom carper saying on our air that the president called into the meeting from his asia trip and that carper says as the
10:07 am
president was doing more talking than listening, he gave this advice to economic adviser carry cone. have a listen. >> and i said gary, why did you do this? why don't you just take the phone from your cell phone back and just say, mr. president, you're brilliant. and but we're losing contact. i think we're going to lose you now. so good-bye. that's what he did and he hung up. >> are you saying gary cohn faked a bad connection to get the president off the phone? >> i wouldn't -- i don't want to throw him under the bus, but yes. >> well, definitive account there. i believe you were in the meeting, as well. what did you hear? >> well, jim, there were a dozen democratic senators who came in good faith to have a conversation with gary cohn and mark short about how we might find a bipartisan path forward on tax reform. i appreciated that the president took the time to call in to our meeting. and i'll say it's accurate that the president talked a great deal and there were a number of
10:08 am
us who had suggestions we wanted to make about ways we could move towards bipartisan path on tax reform. >> i want to turn now if i can to the russia investigation, the attorney for senior white house adviser jared kushner is accused the senate judiciary committee of in his words playing a gotcha game. this even as kushner is accused again of not revealing documents, meetings, et cetera that he's been asked for. you're a member of the judiciary committee. what's your response to kushner's lawyer's claim? >> jim, this is just the latest in a series of events where senior officials in the trump administration initially claimed they have had no contact whatsoever of any kind with russians. then when reminded or informed of information about specific meetings with russians, they say oh, well, yes, except for that meeting. and then try and say that it was -- it was a neutral meeting or meeting that didn't produce
10:09 am
much in the way of results. they've had to antidepressant and amend and amend their initial filings. jared is one of several senior trump administration officials failed to fully disclose their communications whether with wikileaks, with russians or with individuals who claimed they represented russians with information that might be helpful to the campaign. i think it's time for us to bring jared kushner before the committee and to have him testify so that the american public can make up their mind what's going on here and who's being truthful. it may be the case as kushner's lawyer argues that in the specific e-mail chain that's being discussed now, that kushner was discouraging a meeting with russians to get information from wikileaks. that's quite a different thing than his initial position that there were no such meetings or that he had fully disclosed all such meetings. >> that's right. did he accept that meeting, the famous meeting in trump tower in which we now know russians offered damaging information on
10:10 am
hillary clinton in advance that have meet. there's abeen a lot of concern that partisan differences are really getting in the way of the work they need to do. you're on the judiciary committee. i know you have some disagreements with your republican colleagues. but are you and republicans or democrats and republicans on the judiciary committee still able to be investigate this in the aggressive way that they are charged to do? >> our progress has really slowed, jim. the coordination, the cooperation between our chair and ranking member has frayed somewhat as they have different priorities for what sorts of information and witnesses they want to pursue. i believe the senate intelligence committee continues to make progress. the house intelligence committee as you know and widely reported has had a real on again, off again progress because of some missteps by devon nunez, the initial chair of their investigation. at the end of the day, my top
10:11 am
concern is that robert mueller, former fbi director, career law enforcement official respected republican, be able to conduct and complete his investigation without harassment or interference. i think it is equally important on the judiciary committee, we be able to do our job of oversight of the department of justice. i have recently sent a letter to the attorney jen which has not yet received a reply in several weeks, for example, asking about the abrupt firing of dana bent ta, number four in the department of justice, the eastern district of virginia, u.s. attorney. there are reasons we should continue to ask questions and bring in witnesses in front of the judiciary committee. i'm concerned, jim, we are slowing in our progress. >> let me ask you this, the day before thanksgiving but i'm not going to let you off the hook. did gary cohn in meeting with democratic senators discussing tax reform bill did he fake a bad connections to get the
10:12 am
president off the phone? >> well, i remember it a little differently. it was a long call. it was clear that there was some eagerness in the room for us to resume our conversation. we heard a lot from the president. i do remember senator carper making that suggestion. i don't think gary cohn abruptly hung up on the president but it was a challenge to transition him off the call. and i think gary cohn handled it appropriately. >> a challenge to transition him off the call. diplomatic phrasing there, senator chris coons. let me wish you and your family a happy fantastic. >> thank you, jim. i hope as we move toward thanksgiving we'll remember our fellow citizens in puerto rico and the virgin i lads and be supportive of folks who need our assistance at thanksgiving. thank you. >> agreed very much. good words, senator chris coons, thanks very much. >> ivanka trump said there is a special place in hell for someone like roy moore. yet, her father has just endorsed him. we'll discuss that. just a stunning video coming out

which is the only egg goody enough for my family? only eggland's best. better taste. better nutrition. better eggs. you have to watch this video. it looks like a scene from an action movie with bullets flying and north korean soldier making a daring escape across the boarder to the south. shot multiple times. he barely makes it 0 safety. all of this caught on closed-circuit television. cnn's brian todd is here to break this down. i can't believe it. no matter how many times i watch this. tell our viewers how this went down. >> we'll pick it up after he drives his jeep into a ditch. at this point he's already
10:18 am
crossed past a north korean command post and driven past it. soldiers have come out. they're aware of it and running toward him. we're going to pick up the video here. he's in a ditch. you see him getting out of the vehicle here on november 13th a week ago monday. he runs over this way. look at this. you've got north korean his fellow soldiers chasing after him here. they come right behind him. >> they're feet behind. >> it's hard to know the depth. it can't be more than 15 feet. they're firing at him. he's running. how had he don't kill him is astounding. watch. he gets out of the frame. this soldier hits the ground. probably purposely to steady his shot. at this point, look at this guy. he comes in. seemingly with a pistol. he levels it we're not sure if he fires or not. if we come over here, you can see other north korean soldiers over here on the right 0 are firing. >> those are plumes of smoke. 40 bullets fired at this guy in frantic seconds.
10:19 am
watch, this soldier scrambles across the demarcation line chasing after him. he's not supposed to do that. that's a violation of the armistice. he gets about 15 feet across, doubles back. i talked to general marks who says this guy isn't going back because he thinks i've violated the armistice. he's going back because he could be a target and realizing south korean troops are on the way and they could be shooting at him. >> he's running for his life then at this point. >> we're going to get to this other video. watch. look at this. he's presumably already shot bounding across, full of adrenaline. >> we think as many as four bullets in him. >> it's on a loop. he is hoofing it, getting across to the south korean side of the border, presumably having been shot at least once or possibly twice. a still shot of him here lying in a heap by a retaining wall he's already across the border. the doctor said he lost more than half of his blood.
10:20 am
okay? so then we're going to get to in this heat sensor video here. >> these are the figures here. the heat signature from their bodies. >> heat signature video. two south korean soldiers. at this moment, look at that. looks like one of them has a gun leveled for cover as they crawl toward him. look at this. they're going to pick him up. they're going to drag him back toward their side of the border. this is technically on the south korean side. again, general marks told me at this moment they're exposed to north koreans who have a line of sight and a line of fire at them from over here. and the north koreans coz have easily fired more shots. you would have had excalation. they drag back to safety. is he airlifted out and then taken to a hospital. again the doctors saying he lost more han than half his blood. he took at least five shots. self of them, the doctor said, in the shoulder in the abdomen, in the knee. the one in the abdomen is the one that stayed in his body
10:21 am
causing the most damage. the doctor said that one almost killed him. he lost more than half the blood in his body and lucky to be alive right now. >> thanks very much. a fascinating it story. a lot to talk about. this is the first time the american-led u.n. command released security footage of a defection across that demilitarized zone. we can discuss what we can learn from the video. my next guest is a former senior are adviser at the state department. first question is, unusual for the u.s.-led forces there to release a video like this. is this a message they're trying to send? that this is actually the united nations command. and this is something that we often forget because the u.n. command is still in charge of keeping this armistice and guarding the dmz to make sure both sides don't restart the korean war. yes, it is unusual. i think it's because there's so much speculation and so many rumors and exaggerations that.could out. this is just to show exactly what occurred. >> is -- we understand the north
10:22 am
korean soldiers as we understand particularly the onced stationed at the border are the best fed, the best treated. want to put on a good face for north korea but make them the most alert and capable. we learned they found he had parasites in his body. this was not a healthy soldier. can that tell us anything about conditions? >> it tells us a great deal. much more about sort of the long-term conditions and really what this regime has done over decades. these parasites that are have not been found anywhere else are actually quite common among those north koreans that escape north korea. >> and i suppose the obvious point too is if you're willing to run in the face of gunfire to escape a country, that tells you something about -- and you're au soldier who has presumably been chosen for loyalty and commitment, that's not a particularly encouraging sign for the state of that regime. >> no, it is not. on the other hand, we should be very careful about using this one incident as a sign that the whole country's disintegrating.
10:23 am
there have been occasional crossings across. by the way, from the south into the north strangely enough. so i would be much more concerned if there's sort of mass defections of entire divisions or platoons or brigades. >> or senior leadership. >> thaekt. >> thanks very much for putting that into context for us. one programming note. tonight at 97:00 eastern time, will ripley gives is a rare glimpse of the secret state taking us inside north korea. it's a must watch. meanwhile, the president is taking his feud with the father i've ucla basketball player to yet another level. calling him "an ungrateful fool" and comparing him to don king. the backlash ahead. plus several republican senators still undecided on the tax bill but did one famous holdout tip her hand? with all the friendsgivings and fa la la family dinners, the hustle and bustle of holiday party season is officially on.

welcome back. president donald trump finally breaking his sigh less on alabama senate candidate roy moore and allegations of sexual assault. the president is saying quite clearly in fact, that he believes moore's denials over the accounts of eight female accusers. but moore's opponent doug jones is using the words of others in washington to make his case in this new ad. >> on roy moore's disturbing actions ivanka ruch says there's a special place in hell for people who prey on children. and i have no reason to doubt the victims' accounts. jeff sessions says, i have no reason to doubt these young
10:29 am
women. and richard shelby says he will absolutely not vote for roy moore. >> i want to bring in my panel, kong greggs doctor correspondent sunlen serfaty, a.b. stoddarded from real clear politics. listen, the contrast between father and daughter here is remarkable. it's not the first time, of course, on other issues. you have the daughter of the president saying there's a special place in hell and the president saying you know what? i don't believe their accounts. how do you react to that. >> what's consistent about trumpland is its inconsistency. donald trump watched the rnc break a an financial fund-raising agreement with roy moore. his own spokespeople have said it's up to the voters of alabama to decide, not up to us. his daughter said there's a special place in hell for people who prey on children. he's gone on to say it's been 40 years and he's denied it. this is what happens. he doesn't -- he isn't a team player and doesn't stay on
10:30 am
message. obviously given his own particular situation facing 16 or so allegations of harassment and other claims, he i think is most comfortable defending moore. it's an interesting aspect he said something like they're trump voters. he has this thing about believing he's going to hang with his voters no matter who they defend, no matter what the case. that ad, that doug jones ad is high quality trolling using the two seminars from alabama and the daughter. >> on this story but it's not the first time you want to shake your head, right? it's that question we've reacheded after a number of controversies like this. what is beyond the pale, right? is multiple accusations, apparently not. multiple accusations from women who at the time they were teenagers, that's not enough for this president to back away from republican candidates. something i just wonder you're up on the hill a lot. do you hear republicans who are upset with this?
10:31 am
>> well, i mean it's interesting. this is always the case for this presidency and this moment in time. you have republicans on a daily basis do not want to be confronted with things that the president says. tweets that the president tweets. i think this case is different. you have the republican leadership, mitch mcconnell, paul ryan backing away from moore here. you have them saying that they believe the side of the women. and that's what made his comments yesterday on the south lawn of the white house even more remarkable, the fact that he was not only basically throwing had i support behind moore but saying in essence he doesn't believe the women. he believes the judge over the women. and so that certainly puts him at odds with the republican establishment. of course, he likes to be at odds with the republican establishment. no surprise there. >> in effect, you hear this from the president. you heard this from kellyanne conway when she said a similar thing the day before. is that the president and those republicans are beak trading tax reform for you know, the suffering of these women, right?
10:32 am
in effect saying a vote for tax reform is more posh than whatever happened. we don't believe them by the way. i wonder if republican voters, you know, that's their feeling, as well. right? is the president in line with his voters here? >> you know, i spent some time in alabama not long ago prior to some of these latest allegations. speaking to republican voters ahead of the last election there and what i really heard from people is a rejection of what sunday lynn talked about of republican establishments. names i heard most often was a loathing of senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. in that instance now, i don't know if at the end of the day the republican voters of alabama or the voters at large will go ahead and say the voices of these women who have come out and said that roy moore either pursued them as teenagers or assaulted them matters less than having a republican house, i don't know if they'll say this. i think there is something to
10:33 am
the idea that they're willing to accept anything not the status quo. every single republican and democratic lawmaker is going to be asked if they're comfortable having that man brokering des with him and working with him on legislation. >> moore's lawyers made the argument it's a conspiracy between the gop establishment and the accusers. somehow they got around a table and decided to take him down. i want to talk about something else. the president before he went out golfing tweeted renewing his fight with lavar ball. you saw these tweets this morning accusing lavar ball of being a poor man's version of dob king but without the hair. again claiming credit single-handedly for releasing them. i wonder as you look, it's hard not to see a racial component to those tweets. >> it is difficult. i think it's difficult mostly because if you look at the president's past comments and reactions he's spent a lot of type having high profile spats
10:34 am
with african-american athletes and public figures. also this morning he tweeted talking about again about the largely black members of the nfl who have choseton kneel in protest of police brutality on the sidelines of games. there's another layer that is important. we're learning how the president sees gratitude and public admiration. he is someone who doesn't back down from a fight. he wants to be gratified for things, wants to be acknowledged and thanked. when he wasn't thanked he didn't like the answer he got. he then turned around and said these players should have been left in yale instead. i think that's really. >> in democratic country, china, a u.s. adversary, abie, perhaps the same question we were talking about moore. does trump have his finger on what the majority of republican voters feel about for instance the ucla basketball players or is he on an island with this? >> he's playing on a resentment that many of his voters have towards who they feel are professional entitled athletes.
10:35 am
the sales i'm told of nfl merchandise went down more than 70% following trump's five-day nfl you know, binge whatever he started the morning after he threatened nuclear war against north korea and he started again on that sunday and went on. his voters respond to this. he also uses culture wars as a diversion. whenever the plot thickens on jared kushner talking to mueller or anything like that that looks like negative press, he goes right back to this kind of thing because i think it works and it stokes his base and his base is all he cares about. he's not a president of persuasion. he's protecting his 35%. and that's his priority. >> we did though did we not, sunlen, see the limits of that if you look at the virginia election. it is true virginia has been trending blue for some time. particularly the suburban districts around washington, it was an enormous advantage for
10:36 am
the democratic candidate, the perception being some of that was reaction to trump. by the way, the atlanta senate race, roy moore still may win. it should be a give me for the republican party. you're seeing the limits, aren't you, of that. >> that's right. going back to moore, great reporting from our team the fact that trump still thinks moore can win here. that's why in essence he is endorsing him, and he doesn't want to be on the wrong side again in the senate race. that's a big factor that's going into play that's an important seat, the politics of the senate very much in his mind. >> the polls show still a tight race. thanks very much for all this. president trump coming up, the president all but endorsing roy moore. will republicans jump on board in public? we discuss this and much more right after this. then we found out how many years that money would last them. how long do you think we'll keep -- oooooohhh! you stopped! you're gonna leave me back here at year 9?
10:37 am
how did this happen? it turned out, a lot of people fell short, of even the average length of retirement. we have to think about not when we expect to live to, but when we could live to. let's plan for income that lasts all our years in retirement. prudential. bring your challenges. i'm never gonna be able i'll take a sick day tomorrow. on our daughter's birthday? moms don't take sick days... moms take nyquil severe. the nighttime, sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching,

president trump wants the people of alabama to vote for roy moore for senate even though he's been accuses of child molestation. why? because moore's opponent is a democrat. here listen for yourself. >> i can tell you one thing for sure. we don't need a liberal person in there, a democrat. we do not need somebody that's going to be bad on krip, bad on borders, bad with the military. bad for the second amendment. >> the president's endorsement defies republican leaders who have called for moore to step down and begs the question at what point do morals come before politics. >> with me to help answer that is republican congressman francis rooney, a florida congressman. thank you for taking the time particularly on this difficult subject. you heard the president's words yesterday. not only tacitly supporting
10:42 am
moore but dismissing really the accounts of these women based on moore's denials. what's your reaction? >> there's too much smoke for there not be some fire. i watched the clip about one of the ladies that came forward and how. >> agonized many years what to do about it. it seems most everybody that's heard these kinds of things seems to line up unanimously this guy is a bad guy. >> the president seemed to say it's been 40 years. you'll often hear that when women come out, why did they wait as if it would be a pleasant experience for a woman to tell the story. >> i think it's very difficult for these people to do that. i would rather him not be serving in the united states congress with that kind of background. >> let me ask you this. reacting to the president's decision here. if this isn't a disqualifying offense, what is? >> this is a pretty bad disqualifying offense. i agree with the president's frustration about having a solid republican seat go to a
10:43 am
