>> let's get to the news. the "washington post" is moving the line on these cases that we're seeing with people in prominent positions and allegations of sexual up pro bright. there is a congressman. there is a picture of him on the internet. there is an unnamed woman who tells the "washington post" that joe barton threatened to go to the police if he released pictures. he said, yes, i am because i am the victim of revenge porn. on the other side, a very different issue we should not lose sight of. an aide for conyers said he harassed her. the congressman is refuse to go resign. there is a house ethics panel investigating a settlement that he did make in 2015 with another former staffer accusing him of
3:02 am
sexual harassment. >> and the flurry of allegations have lawmakers wrestling with how to handle these controversies. and to expose details, settlements at the expense of taxpayers. and president trump is spending his first thanksgiving as commander in chief at his florida estate. will he once again air his grievances or perhaps on this thanksgiving offer his own message of thanks? we have it all covered. we begin live in washington with our top story >> reporter: good morning, erica. sexually explicit photo of joe barton surfaced on the internet this week on an announce mouse twitter account. barton has apologized for the lewd photos but also raised the possibility that he's the victim of revenge porn.
3:03 am
a bar ton spokeswoman said he did not release the image himself and he does not know who did. a young woman has come forward saying barton did indeed send her lewd photos and messages when they had two sexual encounters over the course of five years. the woman told the post that she slept with him last in 2014. she said, "i was in it for the poll tux connection." she shared a secretly recorded phone call with the paper. according to the post in that call, barton warned her against using the explicit images in a way that would negatively affect his career, vowing he would go to the capitol hill police over her threats. she said she took the phone call as a threat. barton said it was to stop her from releasing the photos as revenge porn. in a statement barton says, the

dallas "morning news" has identified a potential crime against me and the transcript may be evidence. this woman said we had a con is sensual relationship. i offered to take the matter to capitol hill police to open the investigation. today they reached out to me and offered to launch an education, and i have accepted. because of the pending investigation, we will have no further comment. also this morning, democratic congressman john conyers is facing new harassment allegations, a former staffer, melanie sloane was verbally harassed by conyers. while some doesn't think she was sexually harassed, she thinks his behavior was inappropriate. he called her into his office when he was in his underwear. the congressman is not going to
3:05 am
resign but the house ethics committee is also investigating a reported settlement with an unidentified former employee over claims of sexual harassment in 2015. chris and erica. >> thank you very much. happy thanksgiving to you. let's discuss. is jackie kucinich and david drucker. all right. so let's deal with the provacative top you can. why is he in the conversation with conyers and al franken? we don't know who this unknown source, i'm sure the "washington post" knows, but undisclosed. do you see them all fitting in the same bucket? >> well, that's a really good question. >> only kind we ask, brother. only kind we ask. >> dressing on the outside. stuffing on the inside. >> in a very unfortunate sort of
3:06 am
way. congressman barton, number one, if you're a public official, don't take selfies that are damaging. you can't do the same sorts of things that nonpublic officials can do even if it's not wrong. especially in the apparent post-weinstein era we are now living in. there is very little room to maneuver with any hint that you might have done anything inappropriate in a sexual manner. there is a difference between a consensual relationship that goes wrong and sexual harassment or assault clearly. and i think the democrats in particular have to reckon with john conyers. otherwise we lose the political and moral high ground if somebody likes roy moore wins the senate race in alabama. this is not the last of what we've seen from all of this. i feel like it's just the beginning of a tidal wave of
3:07 am
allegations that will come out against many members of congress. things like this, jackie knows this as well, have been going on for years. because working on capitol hill is almost like working for a family business. >> right. right. >> nobody has talked about it. and if you live in a family business and you're unhappy with how someone treated you, you did not run to the press because it's a family issue. >> and also, the rules there are designed to protect each individual family business, to use drucker's analogy. staffers don't have the same rights that maybe someone with a similar position working in the private industry. talking about this conyers situation, perhaps this will lead to reforms that will empower some of the staffers that haven't had a whole lot of recourse. >> erica and i were talking about this before. this is a tricky one. we're leading with barton.
3:08 am
take what david was saying. barton is a republican, not a democrat. so they're leading with it, we're leading with it. why? what do you make of it? what we're talking about right here right now is conyers changed what happened on capitol hill, the settlements, accountability, the settlements you and i are paying for which is nuts. define the next. now we find our way to barton. david will say, well, there's a higher standard. says who, though? who is the bedroom police? are we the morality stuff. weinstein versus barton? >> they shouldn't be in the same conversation. >> i don't know that they're in the same conversation. what we're looking at here when it comes to the barton, we're hearing two different stories.
3:09 am
there are slightly different timelines. we know from both parties it was consensual. that's important. that changes part of this conversation. but we're looking at is this a case of revenge porn potentially, which is not -- there is a texas state law that could have been violated. oar is there pressure by the lawmaker to have her keep quiet. if you're an elected official, you're held to a higher standard. and the standards are changing. >> strong points. >> i think they're in the same conversation politically. sex and politics, whether or not the sex was consensual or not, all ends up in a political discussion about what can keep you in office or get you thrown out of office. morally there is a difference between a consensual relationship and is sexual harassment in the workplace.
3:10 am
we should keep those straight. we have seen over the years members of congress get caught cheating on their spouses in a consensual relationship. often that got them thrown out by voters who felt this isn't the kind of leader we want leading us. it all depends. >> i really think it is. that's a big question of whether voters decide to keep someone or throw them out. if lawmakers seem to be a family values person or has been anti-gay and is posting on a gay site. that has happened in congress. the hypocrisy issue is really i think what gets these guys in issue. if it is a matter of the bedroom, just a bad guy to their spouse or bad woman to their spouse. that's one thing. but if they are being hypocritical, voters don't like that. that's when they will get themselves in trouble. >> i remember barton back from the clinton days where he was one of the view on the republican side who was saying i
3:11 am
don't care what he does. i think he said i don't give a fig leaf. but i don't want him lying under oath. it was a brave position and unpopular with his party at the time. i'm saying, to jackie's point, every moment we spend talking about who is doing whatever freaky thing they're doing in their personal life, okay, there should be a higher standard for them. fine. we're now talking about what jackiey is talking about. who knew about them? what avenues to dignity should the women have. we're not talking about that when we're listen to go this. that involves our laws, morals. and the media has the temptation to find the next, and the new. we need to drill down on that because that matters. >> and if you want to make people care at least in conversations i had the past few days about this $17 million in settlements. which, again, we don't know which settlements were for sexual harassment claims.
3:12 am
they're for all different claims. >> right. >> that is a major issue. so not only changing how they're handled but also the transparency and knowing where your money is being spent. >> have you had any lawmaker say i know about that. nobody knew that anybody had ever settled a case. nobody ever knew about this. >> john conyers claimed he didn't know about one of the cases settled against him. it was implying congress made an agreement to satisfy somebody so they would go away. he indicated that, hey, i would have denied done anything if anybody would have told me. i think there is a lot left to find out about this. you're right, these are the issues that are important not to lose sight of. >> david, appreciate it. your first thanksgiving as a family, jackie. good to you. >> lots to be thankful for.
3:13 am

drucker and jackie kucinich. running through all the tweets that wefdz conversations about the last 24 hours, which is interesting if you juxta pose that with the president's message. i want to listen to that last thanksgiving. >> it's my prayer that on this thanksgiving we begin to heal our divisions and move forward as one country strengthened by shared purpose and very, very common resolve. in declaring this national holiday, president lincoln called upon americans to speak with one voice and one heart. that's just what we have to do. >> one voice, one heart, shared purpose. what we are accustomed to hearing from the commander in chief. this thanksgiving, that purpose is thanking the president perhaps? is that where we're going, david? >> look, i think the president would benefit and would have benefited post campaign given the low expectations, especially
3:21 am
because of the divisive nature of his leadership had he followed through on that message. he would not have lost any credibility with the base of his party that really likes the aggressive way that he politics. and i think people and voters that are skeptical of him would say it is really nice to see someone who can turn away from the campaign and try to unify the country. it is hard for any leader to unify the country the way many wish they would on both sides of the aisle. the president would be in a much better place politically had he followed through. instead, what he has chosen to do is really politic toward the base of his party. he used politics that gave rise to him in the political party. it helped to win the republican nomination. that has put him in awe place where the base of the party is all he can ever depend on. i don't think tup he could
3:22 am
change and it would be believable and it would really expand his base of support. so i think he is where he is. i think that is authentically trump. looking back, i think it will be a missed opportunity. how the country feels about his leadership i think matters. i think that's what we saw with president obama and one of the reasons trump won. even though they liked him and re-elected him, there were still feelings about his policies that led them to look at trump. >> look, on a day like today, there is a layup for the president here. it doesn't take a huge leap of logic or political calculation to just say something positive and unifying. what do we start telling our kids when it comes to thanksgiving? what are you thankful for? maybe if the president thinks about it that way, what am i thankful for, it will he will bo
3:23 am
act like the man that he is, the biggest man in the room. even when you look deep in his base no one, except for a small slice of his base, is happy with how he chooses his fights what it comes to his online life. if he thinks about what he is thankful for this career, maybe that creates a new avenue for him. >> yeah. i feel like we're back to the happy thanksgiving to the haters and the losers of the trump twitter feed. i don't think we ever really advanced before that. >> that was is funny, jackie. >> i'm not criticizing it at all. but one of the things that's happening here, when you look at his legislative agenda, the president doesn't have a lot to be thankful for. if he keeps the people that are most devout for him angry about what's going on in the nfl, lavar is ball, who should be thankful for the president.
3:24 am
the only people who knew who lavar ball before he engaged with the president was sports fans. he probably does owe the president a thank you on that. as long as his base is distracted with some of these other issues, they're not angry about how tax reform hasn't gone anywhere. health care hasn't gone anywhere. some of his big agenda items have stalled in the senate. he's ruined some relationships with key senators who would have been able to help him push this through. that's on him. he can rage about congress all he wants. when you pick fights with the people who you really need to drive your agenda is that doesn't really help you do it. >> i feel like a broken record. but in all seriousness to both your points, if he continues to solely play to this base, if he doesn't have the connections, if he doesn't have these legislative wins, what is to keep him going for the next
3:25 am
three years. >> i think he thrives on this. he thrives on the fight. one of the reasons he's had trouble pivoting away from the campaign, which he will never do and i should have never used that word. my apologies to everybody is because this is what he knows. it's true, by the way, for all presidents. jackie knows this. when politicians win doing a certain thing, they think that thing worked. and they keep working it until they lose. so if republicans have a really bad day in 2018, it's possible the president may rethink a little. the question is whether there will be anything left in the well for him to go back to to reset his administration. it is is something bill clinton was able to do in 1994, but it may not be available to this president. >> politics is off the art of reinvention. there is space for what got you here may not get you there, whatever your goal is. it is a special day. we are thankful for all of these

3:43 am
video, why is this the first time this has been released, the video of a defection? i think for the first time we have a white house now that wants to undermine north korea. because it shows, first of all, the violations. but it also shows the north koreans in a really unimpressive display of muilitary action. >> thanksgiving. day of reflection, obviously. where do you think things are heading in terms of what's going on with north korea and the united states and what we hope is a burgeoning alliance against their threatening and menacing behavior? >> i think within nine months or so we will see president trump strangulation campaign really start top work. we already have stories that officials in pyongyang are not getting their rations from a special distribution channel. that is absolutely stunning. we know the north koreans are accelerating loyalty payments.
3:44 am
those are informal taxes. that shows a money flow problem. i think it is starting to work. the north koreans are going to be desperate. that's also the same time, chris, they will perfect their missiles and nukes. so you have the two events occurring at the same time. north koreans becoming confident in their arsenal and becoming desperate because we have shut off all money to north koreans. >> thank you very much. happy thanksgiving to you. >> happy thanksgiving, chris. >> disgraced gymnastics doctor pleading guilty to molestation charges.
