4:01 am
images that he sent her during their relationship. congress is raising the question that, yes, he did go to capitol police because he believes he is the victim of revenge porn. on a very different side of this spectrum we have the story of a former staffer for democratic congressman john conyers. they tell cnn he harassed and verbally you abused her. he adamantly denies the allegati allegation. >> they investigate is a settlement made in 2015 with another former staffer accusing i'm of sexual harassment. lawmakers wrestling with how to handle these controversy. and pressure is mounting on congress to unmask harassers on capitol hill and disclose details on those secret settlements we're learning more about. the one thing of course we know they came at the expense of your tax payer dollars.
4:02 am
good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, erica. a lot of questions about this after a sexually explicit photo of joe barton surfaced on an anonymous twitter account. barton has apologized for the lewd photo but also raised the possibility that he's the victim of revenge boporn. barton sent a woman lewd photos and images over the course of five years during their relationship. she last was with him in 2014. she said i was nutt fin it for politics connection. according to "the post," barton warned against using explicit images he had sent her in a way that would negatively affect his career, vowing he would go to
4:03 am
capitol hill police over her threats. she took the phone call as a threat. congressman barton says it was to stop her from publicly releasing images as revenge porn which texas outlawed in 2015. barton said the dallas morning identified a potential crime against me and the transcript in the "washington post" may be evidence. this woman admitted we had a consensual relationship. when i ended it, she threatened to publicly share my private photographs and upbt intimate corresponden correspondence. today capitol police reached out and offered to launch an investigation and i have accepted. because of the pending investigation, we will have no further comment. and also this morning, democratic congressman john conyers of michigan is facing new harassment allegations.
4:04 am
melanie sloane said she was verbally abused and harassed by congressman conyers. she claims his behavior was inappropriate. one instance he called her into his office when he was in his underwear. the house ethics committee a settlement with a former employee in 2015. >> sunlen, appreciate it. happy thanksgiving to you. let's discuss with david drucker and real clear politics, a.b. stod ard. a few days ago i said not all accusations are equal. this latest turn in this story is evidence of that. barton does not belong in the same sentence with conyers. i'm not saying what's true and what isn't. but conyers with a settlement of
4:05 am
harassment. and an ethics investigation. barton, unnamed single source from the "washington post", respected outlet. but both stories i guess matter because we are dealing with public officials. but they are not the same kind of story. >> no, they're not. in the court of political opinion, they can be discussed together because of the judgment they make. there's simply no difference between the two. one a relationship gone bad. consensual. the other unwanted advances in the workplace. and i think the barton story, not the saul thing as women being assaulted, being being
4:06 am
harassed. and i think it's important for the stories we have been covering about harassment and assault that we not confuse the two when we're discussing them because it muddies the water and everything becomes -- not that it should be but the danger long term is everything becomes a he said, she said. those are the kind of things that john conyers, who keeps denying allegations and saying i'm not going to resign, and the same thing of roy moore, republican from alabama, denies all allegations. i'm not going to got out of the race. that's what can help them survive these things, even if they shouldn't. >> point of not just the denials but the way the accusers are being looked at. the women who have come forward who are bringing forth these allegations and how they are being received, a.b., in very different ways. >> i would argue depending on political party of the person who is involved. when does that change?
4:07 am
that is an important distinction as well. >> conservatives are excited that jump on the allegations made against senator al franken, a democrat. and they will be interested of course in the conyers story as well because he's a democrat. but because both president trump and roy moore have denied the allegations that women have made against them, they don't seem interested in talking about that. it has to do with the perspective of your political party. and that is obviously unfortunate. we are looking at two stories here on the democratic side which are sum. the conyers and the franken story. they want him on out of the job because he's 88 years old. he has a long history of
4:08 am
inappropriate behavior with his staff. they're awfully silent at the same time about senator al franken. >> be straight with me. i just feel like we have an opportunity here. women are coming forward. we know why they don't come forward. not because they're waiting for the right time. like they are trying to play to advantage. they're afraid. not all accusations are equal. it can be a painful process but necessary. every moment we talk about barton and the salacious aspect of that story. we're not talking about settle
4:09 am
isments that erica hill and i are paying for. >> we're not. you know what else we don't talk about, russell simmons. check out his twitter feed. we'll say it. he comes out and pens this denial where he supports me too. he supports these women. we don't cover that the same way. that's my concern of mission creek. a serial cheater. then what is it? someone who is living a lifestyle they don't want to tell us about. we're saying they deserve attention. there are two conflicting accounts. yes, they both say it was consensual. consent a whole separate thing that we will hear more and more
4:10 am
about. there is the question of was this an attempt at revenge poor or a lawmaker attempting to silence awe woman. that is an important question we have to talk about. as we move forward, if something like that happened that's an important point. >> when anything happens in the news, whether it's salacious stories like this or anything, the nature of being in the media, you try to go forward and try to bring as much information to light as possible. the hardest thing to do as a journalist is to say, no, i'm not going to report on that. i'm not going to cover that. given the context of this particular store, it doesn't deserve the same scrutiny and coverage as these other real
4:11 am
problems. and you're also correct in saying there is danger of losing sight of what one of the real problems is which is how they can handle all the sexual harassment allegations. i think one of the reasons this has been happening. if you're not in washington, it is impossible to understand in. it is is not a normal workplace. it is like a family business where loyalty is paramount and people get away with the kind of behavior that is not necessarily fireable. >> their loyalty is supposed to be to us, not to each other. i have to tell you, a.b., i lean on you all the time for what this means. i can't find a lawmaker to say, oh, yeah, these settlements, we have heard about them over the years. they all say i don't know. all they do is gossip about each other. but they have never heard about these settlements we're all paying for with what's happening down there. it is so silly they have to account for private versus public expenditure of dollars
4:12 am
except when it comes to these lawsuits that we never hear anything about. the loyalty is to us, a.b. that needs to change. >> i agree. i really hope from all of this, and the barton story is completely separate from john conyers settling accounts privately, making sltsmentes out of his budget account. leadership didn't even know about it. there is office of compliance. we have to look at sexual assault, sexual harassment and get to the bottom of that. reforms need to be made about what you can do as well. if you're trying to silence women with tax payer dollars, that is a huge concern that needs to be remedied. >> and one we cannot lose sight of. a.b., david, thank you both.

dangerous agenda. every day you turn on the tv, on twitter and there is another person being accused of serious sexual violence or misconduct in this country. and that is the issue. whether it's sports, republicans, democrats, the president, media. he is spending a message as he did in the campaign and in his own behavior that sexual assault and sexual harassment doesn't exist and shouldn't be cracked down upon. and this really is the shame of our nation. the president is kind of leading that shame on parade. >> how does that change then, ed? we have two very different narratives in this country. we have what christine is setting up what she sees. the president quick to weigh in on al franken. we have the need to address

these allegations of harassment and to listen to accusers. i would argue it is important for the president to speak out on this but to have a clear message. can we get that? >> first of all, happy thanksgiving. >> happy thanksgiving. >> such an important issue. i was listening to the show is a few minutes ago. i think chris was bringing up the comment that each on case is different. that is one of the things we have learned in the process that each of the victims deserve both honor and respect. i think that's what we're saying. i want to join that chorus. in the case of another thing chris said, every instance is different in the accusers and the comments. what the president said on rye moore is he denied it. all the ones we have talked about either admitted something or apologized for conduct.
4:23 am
he said 40 years ago allegation he said didn't happen. i have said over and over, we should be very respectful. i'm not saying women are not telling the truth. i'm saying i don't have a reason to doubt them or know their truth. but what we know in politics, and christine knows this, things down the stretch of a campaign get tossed up. and the president is saying on that one, focus alabamans on your choice. and they said of someone wins or loses the election doctor the or wins the election, they will take up the ethics committee investigation. we need to have more airing of grievances. but we have to be respectful that not every accusation is true in the way it is being presented. and people have a right to deny it if they didn't do it and face the were consequences of the come. i think that's what we are seeing some of. i think it's actually good. >> i think you are confusing some of what i said. what's happening here, as you pointed out is, one, the

president's hypocrisy. two, because someone denies it, because mr. moore denies it doesn't mean it's not true. not at all. and i think we're seeing particularly when you have people and women after women after women coming forward with nothing to gain, right? we have heard story after story of the women and the families of the women coming forward are attacked, threatened literally. there is nothing to gain. nothing at all. and i think what we need to be careful, and i would urge people in alabama to think about is do you want someone who is both a sexual predator and a liar representing you in alabama? and there is no evidence -- >> that's just not fair. >> there is no evidence to indicate that roy moore is not telling the truth. we have women, people associated with the mall, we have other members of law enforcement and law enforcement affiliated entities saying they knew of this. they saw him in the mall after he was supposed to have been

4:26 am
if the standard is anyone who says with sincerity what happened to them, then it's true. then every single candidate running for office from now until the end of time will be disqualified because there will be people who accuse them. all i'm saying is this. the president has reframed the debate and said if someone denies it, you have to at least respect that. you may disagree but i think a lot of the country says, hey, we do have a system that balances that. then the president turned the argument towards there is policy judgments that will take place. they are going to vote for wall funding on crime and other things. and alabama ans will decide. the senate says they will investigate. the last two senators thrown out was in 1862, missouri senators, for joining the confederacy. >> we will have to do more on history next time. >> thanks very much.

play football, because they have chosen to speak out and be outspoken, i think on some level donald trump thinks it is inappropriate. that is problematic. >> i don't think the president is picking fights with anybody. i think he is responding in kind. i disagree with the premise that this somehow has any type of racial overtures. look, at the end of the day we know this president is an equal opportunity tweeter. he will tweet at a person if he happens to be black if he has something to say or hispanic, republican, democrat. he will tweet and respond if somebody says something about him or to him that he disagrees with to set the record straight. to imply this is a racial thing or to imply that he only picks fights or tweets to african americans is just untrue. >> similar money, he is an equal opportunity offender.
4:45 am
>> the president definitely has a problem anymore. it is not normal for the president of the united states to pick fights with folks over twitter let alone pick fights with people, period. if donald trump wants to be president of the united states, he needs to get a thicker skin. lavar ball speaking out, nfl players taking a knee bothers him. what about fredricka says bothers him. he attacked lavar ball saying he was a poor man's version of don king. that is absolutely a dog whistle. what about these particular folks, particularly in the ucla players's case makes him think they are grateful for them. >> because they are not in a chinese jail. it's very simple, simone. they should be grateful for the president intervening because today they are with their families for thanksgiving. they could have been sit

me for what i did, or is he doing his duty? is he showing stewardship of the people he is to represent. >> there are so many other things donald trump should be worried about. there are a litany of national security issues that the united states of america is facing. for the life of me, i don't understand why the president of the united states allows lavar ball, nfl players and whoever else, to get under his skin. so we have to evaluate why, why is this bothering the president so much. and the only thing i can fathom is because the president does not believe that lavar ball, that he had the audacity to speak out, to not be grateful. that is dog whistle language. >> no. just the fact that someone should be fathomed by the fact, i just intervened to help your child not sit in a chinese jail
4:49 am
for a crime he should not have done and he's not grateful. simone, if that happened to you, it would be grateful. if it was a democrat, republican, communist or soldier that goal got him out, just say thank you. and the president can tkwaoet and deal with domestic affairs, like tax cuts for middleclass americans and small is businesses at the same time. he's fully capable of doing that. he can multitask. >> i would like to say -- >> he denounced them multiple times many years. we know that. that's a silly dog whistle and you know that. it's unfair and untrue. the president is strong in denouncing kkk white supremacists and the like. but at the same time those -- that father and anybody else who does not show appreciation for what he did is wrong.
4:50 am
ungrateful and a foolish thing to do. i hope, simone, you >> absolutely. >> we all can agree on that. happy thanksgiving to you both. we are thankful for the difference in perspective that you bring to the show. >> happy thanksgiving, y'all. >> absolutely. erica. the search is expanding for three missing navy sailors after a plane crash off the coast of japan. it has been a deadly year for the u.s. seventh fleet. we'll discuss, next. remember how the economic crash

that had benefited people like me who are well off, was, in fact, stacked against everyone else. it's why i left my investment firm and resolved to use my savings for the public good. but here we are nine years later and this president and the republican congress are making a bad situation even worse. they won't tell you that their so called "tax reform" plan is really for the wealthy and big corporations, while hurting the middle class. it blows up the deficit and that means fewer investments in education, health care and job creation. it's up to all of us to stand up to this president. not just for impeachable offenses, but also to demand a country where everyone has a real chance to succeed. join us. your voice matters.

that's why a cutting edgeworld. university counts on centurylink to keep their global campus connected. and why a pro football team chose us to deliver fiber-enabled broadband to more than 65,000 fans. and why a leading car brand counts on us to keep their dealer network streamlined and nimble. businesses count on communication, and communication counts on centurylink. how much money do you think you'll need in retirement? then we found out how many years that money would last them. how long do you think we'll keep -- oooooohhh! you stopped!
4:54 am
you're gonna leave me back here at year 9? how did this happen? it turned out, a lot of people fell short, of even the average length of retirement. we have to think about not when we expect to live to, but when we could live to. let's plan for income that lasts all our years in retirement. prudential. bring your challenges. the search will expand this morning for three missing navy sailors. this is the latest in a string of deadly accidents involving the u.s. seventh fleet. joining us now is kirk liphold, the retired commander of the uss
4:55 am
cole. happy thanksgiving, thank you for joining us, sir. >> happy thanksgiving to you and erica as well, chris. >> thank you. >> so this story, put it into context for us. what do you see in this string of events that we've been monitoring with the u.s. navy. >> first and foremost, our prayers go out to the families so hopefully these people can be found and recovered safely. i think what you're seeing is a larger systemic issue where once again the navy is at the tip of the spear. this is the most active theater they operate in. clearly the temple of operations of having a price. they spent years living under sequestration and now you have a department of defense that does not have a budget thanks to congress not doing their job and you have a navy that's undermanned, and underequipped and we may be seeing just the tip of a spear at a hollow force that in fact is having more of these problems and it's being measured in sailors' lives. >> that is a terrible
4:56 am
measurement that no one wants to see. when you lay it out there, undermanned, underfunded, the big question is how does that change based on everything you said because there are families watching saying my child, my loved one is there with the seventh fleet or could be. how do you answer to them? >> these young men and women, they choose to serve. their families give them to the navy with the responsibility that they'll put them in harm's way but they'll do it in a manner where they can be protected, be safe and come home. right now what we're seeing is that we have a larger problem in the navy and in all the services as a matter of fact, where we're beginning to see a series of incidents. when you look at the training that clearly came out and was in a shortfall with the collisions on john s. mccain and the uss fitzgerald, 17 sailors died because the navy had not invested in training for literally years. and now with these aircraft, it's a twin engine turbo prop. this kind of aircraft should
4:57 am
have had -- if there was an engine failure, the other engine should have been able to operate to get to the carrier to land safely. the fact that both engines quit could be indicative that there was a larger problem. i hope they can find the aircraft recovered so we can get to the root cause of why this airplane went down and the eight survivors are going to be critical in their interviews as the investigation moves forward. >> kirk, one of the reasons i was so anxious to get you on this morning is to deal with the pushback. the pushback is we are making a lot of the exception, not the rule. that eveni though this past yea has been an atypically accident-riddled year, overall flights like this one are routine and they go 90% of the time without any incident. the navy's record is stellar and we are harping on the negative instead of the overall reality. your take? >> i think in some ways you're absolutely right, chris. look, these aircraft are incredibly reliable.
4:58 am
they're called c.o.d.s, carrier onboard delivery, but let's not forget the last of these aircraft came off the line in 1990, so they're 27 years old. while the navy is investing probably $20 million to do structural upgrades and enhancements on avionicsavionic need to look when are the replacements coming and are these aircraft being maintained in a manner, are the crews being trained in a methodology that allows them to continue to operate safely. just because you had a good track record last year, great. that was last year. what's the track record today? because that's the metric. what are we looking at today to make sure these young men and women are safe when they use these aircraft or sail these ships out in especially the pacific fleet, our most active area of operations. >> so it's not just about statistics, it's systemic. that's the take from kirk
4:59 am
lippold, and you would know. thank you, sir. happy thanksgiving to you and your family. >> thank you, chris. you and erica as well. >> thank you. the news did not take the day off on this thanksgiving. there is some important headlines. what do you say, let's get after it. a senior republican lawmaker is apologizing after an explicit photo of him circulated on social media. now a woman says joe bardon would report her to capitol police. >> he says he's the victim of revenge porn. >> we're starting the conversation, sexual assault, violence, i think we're awakening people's consciousness. >> donald trump airing his grievances in a series of tweets. >> he's waging these controversial divisive cultural wars that he feels he can win. >> mr. president, you're the commander in chief. stop this absolute foolishness. the balloons being inflated ready for macy's thanksgiving day parade. >> this is a magical atmosphere. >> this is "new day" with chris

cuomo and alisyn camerota. >> good morning, welcome to your new day, a special holiday edition of "new day." happy thanksgiving. >> and to you. >> erica hill here, alisyn camerota off. what a beautiful day for a parade. we're showing you live pictures obviously. this is a big deal. that is central park west. they're getting ready for the balloons. there's some new ones this year, we'll take you through that, but we have big headlines as well. a senior republican lawmaker is apologizing after an explicit photo of him was put on social media. an unnamed woman tells "the washington post" that congressman joe bardon threaten to go to the capitol police if she exposed lewd images that he sent to her during a relationship. the congressman said, yes, he did go to the capitol police because he believes he is th
