d advanced technology. this offer is for a limited time, so visit thecompanystore.com today. >> welcome to inside politics. i'm dana bash. john king is off. president trump goes all in for senate candidate and accused child molester, roy moore. just hours before the president holds a rally over the alabama border, he makes his most explicit endorsement yet with three words. vote roy moore. and harassment on the hill. three high profile lawmakers are
9:01 am
forced to quit in the span of three days. is this just the tip of the iceberg. plus a cnn exclusive. an e-mail reveals the effort to deliver hacked wikileaks documents to the president before the 2016 race. >> there is a closing in on the president's closest circle. yes, there is no indication that they acted on the e-mails, but if you are in that situation and you get an e-mail like that, you should be reporting it. that doesn't happen either. you have to ask why. >> president trump is heading to florida for a campaign rally tonight. it's florida, but it is right along the alabama border, part of the president's new stepped up push to help elect republican, roy moore, to the u.s. senate. he said in a tweet the last thing they need is a liberal
9:02 am
democrat in the senate. he finished in all caps, vote roy moore. the most emphatic show of support yet for roy facing accusations that he molested a 14-year-old girl and pursued teenager when is he was an adult in his 30s. much quieter are senate republicans who would work with him every day if he is elected next week in the special election. three lawmakers have quit over sexual harassment accusations and who knows how many more are yet to surface. al franken and now congressman trent franks all announced they are resigning. congressman franks happened last night after acknowledging he made staffers uncomfortable by discussing fertility issuesgass.
9:03 am
mj, what's the latest? >> the trent franks resignation was a shock to even some of his colleagues and the back story is really something. he said in a long statement that he and his wife have had fertility issues and they were able to have twins some years back using a surrogate. they were interested in having a third child and they were looking for another surrogate to help them do that. in the course of the conversations he spoke with at least two female subordinates about the issue and said he probably made them feel uncomfortable and may have been insensitive. he insists he never physically intimidated or coerced anyone and never had contact with anyone on his staff. he is being looked at, but what we heard from paul ryan about the congressman was striking. he said he heard credible allegations and as soon as he found out about them, he asked
9:04 am
the congressman to resign. another house member who is being looked at by the house ethics committee is blake farenthold dating back to 2014. they were able to settle as she received $84,000 from a fund set up with taxpayer money. so far there has not been a call for him to resign, but the question is whether that is about to change. as you alluded to what this week as shown, there is less and less appetite and tolerance for this behavior on capitol hill. >> no question. who knew you had to add what do you do when your boss asks you to carry his children to the happened book on capitol hill. joining me now from minneapolis is the senior senator from min. amy was on the senate floor yesterday as her colleague and friend al franken announced his
9:05 am
resignation. thank you very much for joining me. you did not call for senator franken to resign, but you did speak to him privately. tell me about the conversation. >> i did and i talked to him about the fact that you had reached the situation with the mounting allegations and the fact that there was an ethics investigation going on. new allegations had surfaced and that other colleagues were calling on him to resign and it was the best thing to do at that time. he said that morning that he understood and he was going to go talk to his family who he loves so much and he spent the day with them and he came back and the next morning called me and said he made the decision. i felt that giving him that time and that moment to reflect and talk to his family was important and he ended up as you know resigning with many of our colleagues there on the senate floor. >> you made your plea to him in
9:06 am
private as you well know. the majority of your democratic caucus released statements saying it was time for him to go. why did you decide not to add your voice? >> i condemned his conduct early on when the first allegation was made. i felt i was in a different role as his colleague. i'm someone who has worked with him for a long time and there is a lot of trust there and i thought it was best to handle it in that way. that being said as your reporter pointed out, we are seeing a wave of these cases all across the country. we now have an epic moment in our electoral politics and that is a man is on the ballot in alabama and he is running against an incredible candidate, doug jones, former prosecutor and someone who is intrepid and taking on ha hard cases including decades old murder
9:07 am
cases. he is on the ballot for the people of alabama. i'm hoping they will do our nation proud and do the right thing here. as was pointed out, you have republican senators that do not want to see this man and are not supporting him. roy moore to come to the senate. >> i want to talk to you about roy moore. first to stick with senator franken. you are a prominent national female and the senior senator from minnesota. can you tell me your personal feelings about senator franken's conduct? >> i condemned the conduct. it's wrong and when you see that photo, you know it's wrong. but at the same time i'm someone that has worked with him for years and i know he will leave a legacy of the work he has done with education and the work he has done with mental health in the schools. he was way ahead of his time on privacy issues.
9:08 am
the simple idea that a big company shouldn't be able to collect your data and put it out there for profit earring. he was ahead of his time on that and i don't think that is going to change. it has been a very difficult time for our state and even for people who didn't support senator franken. you don't want to see this happen and of course my husband and i are close with franny as well as their kids. it's a hard time, but at the same time you have to think of the victims. not just in his case, but cases across the country. we are seeing a transition like we have never seen. the hope is this will result in safer workplaces and also workplaces where people treat other human beings with civility, respect, and dignity. >> in his resignation speech, senator franken was defiant in tone. i want you and the viewers to listen to part of it. >> some of the allegations
9:09 am
against me are simply not true. others i remember very differently. i of all people am aware that there is some irony in the fact that i am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the oval office and a man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the senate with the full support of his party. >> senator, he never apologized. what did you think of it? >> at the same time the fact remains that he resigned. he resigned from the united states senate and you have someone running in alabama and i think this was his point, who is still on the ballot and you have a president that is down there telling people to vote for
9:10 am
someone where there is to me irrefutable written evidence that he was preying on underage girls. 14-year-old girls. roy moore was preying on them. that is why you see people like cory gardner and others saying that he is not their candidate. they are not supporting him. if somehow he came through this, there is the ethics committee for an investigation. >> how much in all honesty is this sudden push this week, a successful push to get al franken to resign? was it about allowing the democratic party in the senate to climb back on the moral high ground in anticipation of roy moore likely being elected to the u.s. senate next week and being able to from your perspective politically and in a pure way go after republicans for that? >> i see it in a different way
9:11 am
because this settled into an ethics investigation. senator isaacson and the senator who chaired the committee publicly stated in a press release this was in an ethics investigation in the franken cases. that's where it was going to be going into the moore and doug jones election. instead additional allegations came forward and that started this cascade of cries for resignation and ultimately senator franken as he said decided he couldn't keep serving our state in the way he wanted to. in this circumstance with the mounting allegations with the long investigation. if that had been the plan, you wouldn't have seen this resting point where this was being thoroughly investigated and a serious investigation by the committee. >> i want to ask you about what the ramifications are of al
9:12 am
franken resigning. does this set a new standard that anyone accused with credible accusers, that's it, they should just resign? >> first of all the differentiation here was he didn't make that decision himself. >> under duress. >> with multiple reports, yes. based on multiple reports. what i would like to see going forward are these things. i feel strongly about this. i am the that led the bill with senator grassley and shelby on mandatory sexual harassment training before this franken case even came up. we passed that in every senator and every staff member going through the training for the next month. after that we need to change the process in the house and senate. it's ridiculous that we have this cooling off period and that there is mandatory counseling for victims. there is bills out there as you know and i am working with
9:13 am
senator blunt and cortez masto to try to get something done by the end of the year. the third thing is we need due process not just in the congress, but all workplaces. this is not about just toppling men. this is about guaranteeing we will have better workplaces where people treat each other fairly. there is a lot of good men. you know some of them. the key here will be due process and gradeiated sanctions that our president dependinging on what the conduct is. we have not reached that point and there has been really egregious cases where people had to step down, but you want a process that's fair. >> one final question. along the lines you are talking about, a lot of people came out,
9:14 am
david axelrod tweeted something along these lines. it seems that right now, at this snapshot in time, if you deny everything to the end of the earth, then you can survive. if you admit something and show remorse or concession, you have to resign. do you think that's where things stand on the political side of this harassment cultural wave? >> there is not enough characters in a tweet to get at all of this, but i do think that there can be redemption for people. people can leave their jobs. i hope senator franken goes on to do good work. people should be able to go on from that when these kinds of things happen unless they are criminal that end up in jail and then they're doing their punishment, but i think also you want to make sure that these people that are denying and denying and denying and lying and don't take any responsibility by resigning or by making clear what happened,
9:15 am
that's a roy moore. the people of alabama are going to make that decision not just in a month, but next tuesday. they can decide if that conduct should be allowed and then if he somehow ends up in the senate and i really have a lot of faith in doug jones because he is as i said, a former prosecutor and strong person working on the bread and butter issues of alabama issues. if somehow roy moore ends up there, this will go to the ethics investigation and they can look at the facts and the full senate can vote if there is a recommendation to expel him. >> senator, joining me this morning and this afternoon here from your home state of minnesota. thank you so much for your time. i appreciate it. >> up next, president trump is heading south shortly presumably to rally alabama voters to elect roy moore to the senate as we
9:16 am
were talking about. the russia investigation here in d.c. continues full speed ahead. the latest cnn exclusive reporting reveals a possible new link between the trump team and wikileaks. sir! how many of 'em? we don't know. dozens. all right! let's teach these freaks some manners! good luck out there, captain! thanks! but i don't need luck, i have skills... i don't have my keys. (on intercom) all hands. we are looking for the captain's keys again. they are on a silver carabiner. oh, this is bad. as long as people misplace their keys, you can count on geico saving folks money. fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance.
9:19 am
9:20 am
the president may not officially be going to alabama, but he is going to florida that happens to be in the same media market. the president is now all in for roy moore. after railing against the democratic candidate doug jones again, the president tweeted in capital letters, vote roy moore. exclamation point. roy moore is an accused child molester who praised the time in american history that included slavery. the alabama judge with a history of making aggressive and insensitive comments about gays and lesbians and muslims now
9:21 am
enjoys a full throated endorsement of the president of the united states. here to share their insights and reporting, michael born of the w weekly standard and lauren fox and carl from the "new york times." thanks for being here. look, the republican party has been in a pretzel over this. now they are clearly following the president's lead. one of the issues this week was the republican national committee which pulled out of alabama and got back into alabama and my colleague randi kay talked to the rnc chair woman about it and here's what happened. >> we have said all along that these allegations are incredibly disturbing. if they were proven true that the candidate would be unfit to serve in office.
9:22 am
but it's the voters of alabama. this is a democracy and they get to make that decision. it's not up to me and the president said we want to keep the seat republican in the white house and we want to support the president's agenda. >> they are in. not everybody in the republican leadership is happy about this. for example, the number three republican in the senate, john thune, here's what he said this morning. >> i said all along if he comes to washington, he will immediately be under an ethics cloud. >> yet the rnc is supporting him? >> that's unfortunate. i don't condone that and i think they made the right move in the first place. >> i think the person at the table who has been to alabama, how do you see this playing out, particularly the donald trump all in for roy moore. it can't hurt. >> it certainly can't hurt and probably will help more than during the primary.
9:23 am
it was less about trump and more about internal politics. this time it will give him a boost and it helps to clear away the cloud that came over roy moore from that "washington post" article a few weeks ago. >> the clear cloud? >> i think for some alabama voters who want to vote for roy moore. they had been as anybody would have been disturbed by this. a lot of people are cultivating the idea that the accusations are false or that the accusations are somehow planted by opponents of roy moore. i think donald trump's going down there and supporting him so whole heartedly helps to try to remove that cloud from the voters's minds. i think that's what you are going to see tonight. >> the money is down there on a national level. the president is going to go close enough, i think to make an
9:24 am
impact. you also have the democrats galvanizing on their side of the aisle. you have a lot of african american leaders and you put it up on the screen, senator cory booker, bishop, john lewis, a civil rights icon and former governor of massachusetts are all going down to try to galvanize the african-american vote which is very big and very important in alabama. black voters with 28% of the electorate in 2012. the presidential year. that's potentially no small thing. >> this is what they have to do. the democrats have to turn out the african-american vote. there is not a lot of other elections going on in alabama next tuesday, but a few that could help them. the democrats have also had money and are spending money and have more organization going on
9:25 am
than roy moore has. so going into this, that's part of the reason the president is down there. i think to make up for the lack of resources that moore had. i guess to go back to senator thune, they are cringing over the president and what he is saying. i don't want roy moore in the senate. they are going to say look what we did. you pushed franken out and you are bringing him in. a big part of the reason for the pressure on franken was that these democratic women were finding themselves being accused of being hypocrites. they are on tv talking about roy moore and the question is what about franken? >> in something that will make republicans in the senate cringe even more, that's something that is squirrelling around social media related to the african-american vote in alabama, but this guy who the president has endorsed, roy
9:26 am
moore, what he said in the september rally and i want to read it according to an account from the "los angeles times." in response to a question from one of the only african americans in the audience who asked when moore thought america was last great, moore acknowledged the nation's history of racial divisions, but said i think it was great at the time when families were united even though we had slavery. they cared for one another. the families were strong and our country had a direction. look at your eyes. as if his colleagues in the senate was saying do we really want to deal with this guy? >> this is a person who they do not want as a colleague in the united states senate. i'm reminded that donald trump said a lot of things that the republican party was uncomfortable with as well. as we were talking about earlier, the "access hollywood" tape was one of the moments.
9:27 am
it is broadly speaking and mainstream republicans said can we have this person as part of our party and can this be a candidate? they decided yes, we can. that's going on with roy moore and the reason we are seeing him ahead in the polls. there is an element here too and i believe this is playing into the president's decision to really go all in for him. there is this notion that somehow washington and the establishment and the mainstream are trying to tell us what to think about various issues. donald trump tapped into that in a major way in 2016. i think roy moore is tapping into that in alabama and there is a theory on the part of the president and people close to him that know that he is very strong about this. that can get him over the top in this case. >> absolutely. i was talking to a republican senator who said that is true. the voters did decide with the president and will decide in alabama. the senate has mechanisms in place to decide who they think

candidate trump, to his son, and others in the trump organization offered a dekripgz key asz key they could access hacked wiki leak documents. manu broke the story and joins me now. first and foremost, do the sources tell you about the e-mails and whether it was legitimate? >> that's one thing they are trying to figure out. >> to provide documents to the trump campaign in the heat of the campaign. on september 4th, 2016. offering a dekripgz key and web access and offered the chance to get colin powell documents as well. his e-mails were sent to donald

trump jr.'s personal assistant and donald trump jr. was asked about this earlier this week with the house intelligence investigation and he said he had no recollection of this. this came from a senator who we don't know who this individual is. after we reported the story this morning trump jr.'s attorney said we understand the media reported 12 hours prior to the e-mail that the dnc e-mails had been hacked or leaked and we don't know who this is. we have no idea who he is and never responded to the e-mail. on the day of donald trump jr.'s for the first time tweeted about wikilea wikileaks, they understand whether or not he knew about this e-mail. par. >> thanks for the great reporting. i want to remind everyone wa he
9:35 am
has done after we learned about this meeting that he had in june of 2016. >> there was nothing there to follow-up. he said i'm sorry for that. in the end there was probably some bait and switch. there is nothing there. >> nothing there. again according to manu, donald trump jr.'s lawyers insisting that he didn't follow-up skprm seeing this e-mail. obviously this is raising even more questions giving investigators more fodder for the issue. >> a lot of people are trying to discredit the russia investigation and there are tiny connections that mueller is trying to thread to make some big statement about what went on in the 2016 campaign, but they were saying this was just a little thing and i don't remember this and that wasn't a
9:36 am
big deal. moving forward that gets much tougher. >> with the drip, drip, drip. you mentioned the move to discredit robert mueller which has grown louder and louder as this week has gone on and information has come out. it's hard to imagine it's not a coinciden coincidence. park are what we are seeing is a pattern and practice of mueller hiring known clinton and obama political insiders and boosters supporters to undo a presidential election. that was the election of donald trump. >> robert mueller is partisan and biased and attack team. we will name names and explain who the trump-hating investigators are and why this entire witch hunt needs to be shut down and shut down immediately. >> everybody is jumping to a lot of conclusions to say the least. you heard the argument that this
9:37 am
is an attempt to undo a presidential election. read the reports like what cnn found out and think it must be the smoking gun. what we are finding out is more information that at the very least suggest that russia itself and people like wikileaks were trying actively and thought they had the chance to actively influence the election through the trump dam campaign. i think it's problematic to suggest -- there are problems and what we learned about the agent. peter was texting with skmb he was having an affair with them. and i would like to see what the anti-trump texts said or were they something worse?
9:38 am
the attempt to paint a brought brush. after mueller removed him from the investigators, it is really, really far-fetched and looking for an excuse to discredit the investigation. he acted to get rid of him. this is an effort since the beginning since the special counsel was first named at the white house and president trump's allies and republicans on the hill have tried to discredit him and at first he was a comey pal and now his investigators are partisan and he has a big team of investigators. it's a way to under cut what comes out. that welcomes more valuable to the white house. >> it's hard to imagine painting all fbi agents as tree hugging liberals. >> we want to remind you about

last month and that employment remains at a 17-year low. this stock market hits record levels and is a wonderful holiday gift for the president. he is of course someone who loves to talk about economic growth on his watch. it appears americans are giving him more and more credit for it. for the first time, just as many americans credit president trump with the state of the economy as president obama. back in march, just 19% of americans thought president trump was more responsible and now the split is almost even. far more americans say president trump deserves the credit for the stock market and the job market. unfortunately for him it doesn't translate into his overall job well done factor for the president. his approval rating is pretty grim. a new poll from the pew research
9:45 am
center shows just 32% of americans approve of his presidential performance. we are back around the table. i wanted to show a couple more numbers on this which is all good. unemployment as i mentioned keeps falling. in january of 2015 it was 5.7%. you see it was down to 4.1% this month. economic growth dipped to .5% between january 2015 and january 2016, but spiked back up to 3.3% in september of this year. >> this is all good news and it's natural that people start to give president trump credit. he has been there 11 months. oddly it's an issue with the tax bill. how much of this is already baked into the economy that people are expecting the tax bill to come in. will the tax bill spur the
9:46 am
growth that the republicans say it will. if it falls short, they are going to feel it politically. it's the old good news right now, but how is this going to play out? >> that's really true. i have heard from so many people outside in the real world particularly in the business world saying just that. it's baked in. the idea that there will be tax reform and that is a big part of the economic growth. >> we hear president trump and people around him saying over and over again look at the great growth we are getting now. it's 3% and it would be 4%. i heard him go as high as 6%. the business world and wall street and the country in general has been hold that the tax cut has been bigger than anything they have seen. they priced it in and how much can we go above the really good growth levels that we are seeing right now. if it falls short, they will have a problem in terms of
9:47 am
reven revenue. this bill costs a lot of money and they will say that growth will compensate. we have a lot of growth. where is there to go from here? >> speaking of costing a lot of money, today was the deadline for the government to potentially shut down. congress and the president averted it and passed a two-week continuing resolution to keep it going. the president signed that this morning. meanwhile there was and we wanted to show you the highlights from the moments when the cameras were brought into the meeting. >> this is a friendly well unified group. it's a well knit together group of people. we hope that we are going to make great progress for our country. >> we are here in the spirit of let's get it done. >> we are here to make progress. >> we are here to reach a
