the president recording a phone call, rallying over the weekend for a man accused of child molestation. richard shelby bucking saying he can't vote for roy moore. he chose a write-in candidate. didn't say who. doug jones barn storming the state. one of the top-ranking women saying the women accusing president trump should be heard. that is nikki haley. she is notably going off message from the white house position that the women have all lied. this comes as self democratic senators are calling on president trump to resign over allegations of sexual assault and harassment. we have all of this covered for you. let's begin with kaley hartung with our top story in montgomery, alabama. what's happening there today,

the republican establishment who will come out against moore. he has been able to hang tough. not that there isn't damage done. the fact that this is such a close race shows you how much damage has been done by all the other issues viewed by so many as disqualifying about roy moore, his comments about russia in the past few days. his comments about 9/11, gay marriage, et cetera, 10 commandments. we almost forget how controversial he is. but it's a tight race. a couple of problems for the democrat doug jones. they are not used to having such a tight race. they get out the vote operation is really untested, not really this place. that becomes difficult. you have the president doing robocalls getting out his voters. steve bannon.

i wonder if people are reluctant to tell people they are for him. >> as we learn from exit polls, sometimes think of perverse pleasure in lying to pollsters about what they are going to do. >> there is no way to poll this special election in december. they are going to make the decision. it's going to come down to who shows up. and republicans who normally support the nominee stay home. the senior senator said i wouldn't bring myself to vote for the guy. whether they feel it is a foregone conclusion. so this is unfamiliar territory

years. i want to send a mental of who we are and why we are. >> such an unusual race. specific concerns of people in alabama haven't been a part of this race at all because of how large roy moore looms in. in all fairness, he may be there. we kept inviting him on. they played profile games with him as well, gregory. you have shelby weighing in. you have what this selection is supposed to be about. if roy moore wins, what do you believe happens. and do you believe this theory still gain because they can campaign on roy moore in 2018. >> yes. there's no question about it. they're going to run hard at roy moore. they are going to link it, as they are now, to trump and the women who have made accusations against him of sexual misconduct. no question about that. there's a lot here. he has been careful about his he profile, nationalizing the race. he has to be careful, even as he

tries to turn out african-americans, how he tries to still court the voters who might be for barack obama who might vote for him or republicans willing to vote for the democrat. the other thing john mentioned is important. a special election is different. maybe shelby's coming out against roy moore, not for jones but against roy moore, maybe it causes republicans to simply sit on their homes and stay home. >> right. you're saying it's different because there is no reason to go out and vote except this race. >> right. that becomes important. that's where the turnout operation becomes very important. >> and, you know, that shelby comment is already being pushed out in ads right now. the doug jones campaign losing no time. the ultimate third-party validator if you willment absentee ballot requests are up, particularly in urban areas. we will know on election day

when folks turn out, it's up to the citizens of alabama. they can either flip a seat, narrow the margin of the senate or not. we can look to failed specials in georgia being a counter example. this is a democracy in real-time and the implications are huge. if moore does win, if you're a deep red state or deep blue state you can say or do anything. you can say after the 10th amendment should be stricken from the constitution as moore did, and you can still win. that's a dangerous press tkepblt itself. >> i'm glad you brought that up. think of some of the things that roy moore has said apart from these allegations that are just so crazy. >> we have a piece later in the show where we will weigh out that alabama voters have to swallow if they go with roy

moore. and the allegations of these women are not even part of the piece. >> let's remember what we're focused on in terms of a national program about the race is different day in and day out. voters are hearing -- they're of course hearing about the women. but the differences on approach to abortion. what is going to motivate a conservative electorate. we have to bear that in mind. >> in terms of who and what will motivate the electorate, president trump did not need to jump in here. he did. and former president obama has recorded a robocall for doug jones. >> i don't know if they have used the obama robocall. >> right. they kept trying to nationalize

this. vote nor moore is a vote for trump. trump didn't quite go in the state. he tplt it was comfortable going as close as pensacola friday night. but he clearly is getting in, he wants the senate margin. and he is clearly not troubled by any of the accusations or policy positions of roy moore. and that's a big deal. to some extent, this is about whether the virginia momentum for democrats continues and can it continue even in the deep south. >> it is an interesting message. what happened with the accusations, that didn't motivate the president. but the seat did. raw numbers and political advantage and to those who said he wouldn't play those kind of politics. >> u.s. ambassador to the u.n. insisting any woman who feels

longer thinks she's going to be named secretary of state. that is not going to be well received in the west wing. >> good for her. how can she not say that? this is a minimum versus a maximum. nikki haley says they should be heard, dealt with, come forward. should they be believed? not all accusations are equal. many can't be false. you have to prove it, show it, get into it. then look at what nikki haley said about moving the embassy. it will help the peace process. that is difficult to justify except being full throated, i'm all in. it doesn't seem she's all in with all the women. >> i would agree for reasons john said. it is actually that much different. to me what sarah sanders is saying is these women were heard. they should be heard and they were heard before the election and voters rendered judgment is what is implicit in that.

sarah sanders is saying it much more explicitly. senator scott said that as well. if there is something to litigate here still we should do that. but i think that the way the president has moved forward defending himself against these allegations has been much more defiant, different, more successful than others. but it doesn't mean that he's not going to face a renewed threat because of it. but i don't think that nikki haley is taking a great step forward here. >> so this weekend you heard this mini ground swell of democrats starting to say, well, the president should resign. here's senator jeff murkley on that. at least 17 women have accused donald trump ol' sexual misconduct, and i believe them. he has bragged on television. i disagree with him on many things. but this is not about that.

it seems as though with al franken's resignation, this gives them now license to go for the president. >> that's right. this is almost where al franken died for bill clinton's sins. if this is the new standard moving forward -- >> what is the standard? i don't understand what happened with franken. not the idea of whether he is leaving or not, or advanced date in the future when he will leave. but what did he admit? david, help me out. the picture with the hands that kellyanne thinksis groping. they're beating me of the head with that. i thought that was a joke, that he was looking at somebody.

>> senator cory booker basically spells it out. he said i just watched senator al frank endo the right thing and resigning from office. why isn't president trump doing the same thing who has more serious allegations against him, and more women who have come forward. the fact pattern on him is far more damning than the fact pattern on al franken. >> i think that was part of their calculus. we sack is guysed one of our own for a standard. the franken starpld is not a standard because no one can say what it is. it is the volume of accusations regardless of severity. and i think also it raises the question, he apologized reflexably. the denial standard of donald trump and roy moore is more politically palatable. >> this gets sticky. because obviously i don't believe in the nikki haley

today? >> i think the state is leaning roy moore, alisyn. we talked to you right after the "washington post" article came out. our listeners calling in, the ones who may have been on the line. they said, look, we're going to back the republican in this election. then we get back on the regular cycle and start voting for the next senate candidate next year. >> matt, explain that. people who weren't roy moore supporters now feel they are roy moore supporters. do you have a sense that the accusations of all of these women have worn off? >> well, i wouldn't say worn off, alisyn. i would say there's nothing new with roy moore to alabama. he's always been a controversial

figure. we will not know the truth by the time we go and vote tomorrow. we have to take the women at their word to a certain degree. at the same time, the judge said none of this happened. so you kind of revert back to the issues. from an issue perspective, alabama is more in line with donald trump's agenda and roy moore than doug jones. >> the people outside alabama don't know about roy moore. he has said that homosexuality is an inherent evil. it should actually be illegal, he believes. he has said -- he calls islam a false religion. he didn't believe keith ellison should be sworn in. the best days in this country were during slavery. how are alabamaians feeling about those? >> this is a candidate we have known for decades and the controversy surrounds him. again, you have to go back and

look at the primary. there were so many strong republicans in this. roy moore made it out. like i said, he may not have been the first choice for many republicans in the state of alabama, but he is the one left standing in this. those statements, some of them give people heartburn. others say, yes, i believe exactly what he says. we're down to the democrat and the republican. or you can stay home or write in a name if you want to. that's where we are. >> matt, doug jones is the democrat. he has to -- in order to win, conventional wisdom is he has to turn out the black vote. he has this mailer that he has sent out to democratic voters. let me just put it up on the screen for everybody. i don't know if you can see this. it is basically a campaign ad that says do you think if a black man went after high school girls anyone would try to him a senator? and you see a skeptical young black man there. >> we were at a christmas parade

and talking to younger african-americans and all were appalled that doug jones would drag race into something they didn't feel had anything to do with race. he has to get the african-american vote to have any shot of winning. i'm not seeing doug jones going to draw a turnout. to infuse race in that way, that is a step over the line. and i think a lot of our listeners and particularly the african-american community, feel the same way. >> matt, i heard that you're not going to vote tomorrow. >> no, i'm not. for the first time since 1999 that i've been in alabama. judge moore has always been a figure that i have disagreed with with regard to the rule of law and 10 commandments. a candidate has to earn my vote. doug jones doesn't line up with my values, but roy moore has not

earned my vote. based on his campaign has reacted to some of these reactions. sort of disappeared. for that reason i decided i'm not voting for either man. >> why not write in somebody. >> it is an exercise in futility. we couldn't coalesce behind one singular write-in candidate. in order for that to work, you would need one name and one name alone. and we have not done that in alabama. there is only one vote on the ballot tomorrow. i have decided to stay home. >> andrea, can i ask how you're feeling? >> he has taken a lot of heat for that. i will get the i voted sticker. i'm considering writing in a candidate. the candidate i voted for in the primary race. >> so, matt, what do you think the effect of president trump now fully endorsing roy moore, coming down almost to the

alabama border and saying he wants roy moore to win, what has the effect been on your callers and the state there? >> a state that was almost 2-1 for donald trump. we're conservative and we believe some of the issues in that race. we didn't go with donald trump during the primary. he campaigned for luther strange. we saw through that. we did not believe luther was acting consistent with a manner consistent with what we knew. the president, obviously his words are going to hold weight based on the office. i think alabamaians will do their own thing. if the polling is any indication, that is to elect roy moore to the senate stphrfplt where was roy moore this weekend? why wasn't he out campaigning? >> that's a good question. i don't know. i sat down with somebody in our state who does reporting and has a show. and i had to watch that to see what his stance was on a lot of these issues.
