accountability. most other republicans worry a moore win will cause severe damage to the national gop brand. >> i would rather see the republican win, but i hope that within would be a write in. i couldn't vote for roy moore. i didn't vote for roy moore. >> right now we begin the hour with developing news in new york city. authorities trying to learn everything they can about a man who tried to attack the new york city transit system this morning. it was around 7:20 and an improvised device went off in a bus terminal near time square causing minor injuries to three people near the perpetrator. he had the explosives attached to his and he survived the blast. >> this was an attempted terrorist attack. thank god the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals. thank god our first responders were there so quickly to address
9:02 am
the situation to make sure people were safe. >> police have identified the suspect. he is being treated for burps and lacerations. what more do we know this hour? >> reporter: let's start with the suspect. he is 27 years old and has been identified as ula. he is bangladeshi decent from brooklyn, new york. the reason why some of the investigators are saying this is a situation that could have been much, much worse is because of that device that was attached to his body either detonated early or partially detonated. that's the way they are describing it. it was a pipe bomb attached to his and fixed with velcro and zip ties. where did it occur? beneath the ground wri am at 42nd and eighth avenue. port authority across the street
9:03 am
belowground in a walkway between where i'm i'm standing and times square. so some reports that this happened in times square when it happened. obviously you can understand why they say the situation could have been much worse. it's one of new york city's worst nightmares. again this happened at about 7:20 this morning. one mta worker who was working in a booth described it this way and said she was sitting there working and all of a sudden she heard the explosion and started running and left everything behind. they had to borrow the producer's cell phone to call her daughter and let them know she was okay. the suspect said he made the device when he was at work. he is a former cabdriver. the last time he was licensed to

drive in the city was back in 2014. the important information here is that what we are learning so far is that the suspect as far as we can tell acted alone and he is speaking to investigators and they will hopefully be able to yield more information from him. the scene you can see right now, eighth avenue is open. 42nd street is open as well. investigators hope to have mass transit open by rush hour this evening. john? >> on the scene for us. keep in touch. come back to discuss this. the national security analyst is in massachusetts with me here in washington. former fbi director tom fuentes. pick up where jason left off. they have the suspect and they have spoken to the suspect and what more do we know? >> one of the things is where he
9:05 am
learned to make this device. there is a lot of recipes on line and at this point the theory at least that the investigators self radicalized and that's what they call it. they didn't have formal training to do. the device didn't work as he perhaps wanted it to. if you are going to blow something up, one of the passage ways is where you want to do it. it makes sure the impact affects as many people as possible. people are bunched up together and you can kill as many people as possible. had this case he appears to have set it off or it went off at a time when there were not a lot of people around. investigators are counting their blessings. it was this fear that because of
9:06 am
the decision to recognize israel, israeli capital of jerusalem, there would be an uptick and they were looking for that over the weekend. they were looking to see if anybody had in mind that might be animated to carry something out. they didn't have that at this point. >> take us inside. the investigation 101. obviously friends, family, contacts and travel records to see if he did overseas travel. was it on the internet or did he meet people? >> i want to know where he learned. if it was on the internet, which sites and which videos is he looking at? there is various schools of instruction. they want to see who inspired him to put this together. sounds like it wasn't properly done and he didn't practice this out in a remote area. when the powder burns, it burns rapidly and if it's contained,
9:07 am
it explodes. the fact that it burned him indicates that it wasn't properly contained and we have seen this in the underwear bomber christmas day 2009 where it failed to be contained and burned his legs very badly. >> yet a competency question when it comes to constructing the web. new york city, 7:20 in the morning in one of the underground tunnels and the bus terminal and the subway system. if you have been in the tunnel, there are thousands of new yorkers trying to get to work. >> new york city will and always will be the prime target for either organized attacks or what we saw this morning, an improvised attack and not sophisticat sophisticated. new york is ready for it. it's part of the dynamics going in terms of the terrorism threat we have going on. it's not can we stop the guys from doing these things. that's hard to do. we don't know if the suspect had
9:08 am
interacted with the fbi and if he was on anyone's radar screen. what's the reaction when this happened? it's remarkable that the avenues are back open and the transit will be open by 5:00 p.m. thinking about how do you measure success given that new york will be under attack unfortunately persistently is the response of the nypd emergency energy transit authorities. that gets a little bit into politics on funding issues. there are concerns by the nypd expressed openly about reductions in funding for them in terms of homeland security and terrorism efforts by the federal budget. >> the fact that they are trying to reopen as soon as possible. you show the resolve. they wouldn't do it if they had worries. that tells you he reacted. >> they had confidence and

somebody who was not part of a larger cell. at least at this indication. that gives them confidence to open up the transit. >> we will bring them to you. come back when we know more. president obama records a robo call for the democrat in alabama senate race and will the democrat even use it? >> i know there have been a lot of robocalls that have been recorded. kwleen i don't know what is being used. the only one i know for sure is the one my wife did. usaa to me means

9:16 am
>> you don't know what affect it will have that the president of the united states came out in the race. barack obama weighed in for doug jones. they are approaching the question of who they will vote for. there is a possibility that people don't want to say they will vote for roy moore, but they will vote for him. maybe they don't 2079 swant to they will vote for a democrat and they will vote for doug jones. both sides feel like they have a shot. given the political environment, you have to say that roy moore is his to lose. >> one of the most fascinating factors has been the disappearance of roy moore from the state. he hasn't been seen on the ground in the state for the past week. that's been tracked with the president's increasing involvement. it seems like donald trump has taken the place as the candidate. as roy moore disappeared, the president got more involve and

issues that caused luther strange to have a problem. we will overnationalize this when a lot is in alabama. he endorsed the candidate who lost and now he is saying despite the credible allegations, the president is saying i need a republican vote in the senate. >> this is president donald trump and i need alabama to go vote for roy moore. if alabama elects liberal democrat doug jones, all of our progress will be stopped cold. we know democrat doug jones is a puppet of nancy pelosi and chuck schumer. >> number one, no question the question has a loyal base, but republicans are so worried about being tainted with this. if roy moore wins and they can't figure out a way to get him expelled or not seat him. maybe in an ethics investigation that goes on for months if not longer. every republican candidate in
9:20 am
2018 will be velcroed to roy moore. >> from senator shelby who has been in this business for a long time, the home state senator would escort him on the swearing in day. can you imagine the newly elected senator to be sworn in? it strains imagination and a lot of republicans are uncomfortable with it. if we are going to get the vote and win this seat, they have to nationalize it and make it are you for trump or against him? otherwise they don't have a shot. >> president trump won that state by about 28 points. president obama lost it in both elections with 22 points or something like that. the best shot they have to hold that seat with roy moore. we have seen how the margins of one or two can be critical. i think president trump is making his best play. they don't want it to be about the character. >> trump is a much stronger candidate than roy moore. he is more popular and
9:21 am
comfortable in front of the tv cameras in a way moore evidently is not. it may be bad for republicans nationally, but it's not the worst thing in the world for roy moore. >> i question the wisdom of national democrats like president obama and joe biden because they are less popular than a centrist like doug jones. >> we have seen them heading into the break. he won't talk about the obama robo call. popular with african american voters. he said this is serious. you can't sit it out. african-american turn out has to be 25% or higher for doug jones to have a chance. he is nervous about that. he wants it to be an alabama election and not a national democrat. that's toxic. >> no coincidence they waited until literally the day before the election so it doesn't become an issue.
9:22 am
>> they don't want anyone to hear about it outside the african-american community or the people they are targeting directly. >> jones has been openly reluctant to have a specific message and speak to african-americans. states like alabama and mississippi and louisiana have a strategy for winning and doesn't want to appear to have one message for this group and another for that group. he doesn't want to alienate those voters. >> a message for president trump. the ambassador said the president's accusers should be heard as the women once again step into the spotlight. >> it became apparent that in some areas the accusations of sexual aggression were being taken seriously. people were being held accountable except for our president.

women are very special. i think it's a very special time because a lot of things are coming out and i think that's good for our society and i think it's very, very good for women. i'm very happy a lot of these things are coming out. >> that was president trump weeks ago responding to the wave of allegations against roy moore and other media accounts in the workplace. since then a new spotlight on sexual misconduct forced three members of congress to resign and turning back to the president himself. three of the women who came forward in last year's campaign hosted by brif new films told their story of how mr. trump
9:28 am
allegedly groped them or made unwanted advances years ago. >> some men think they can use their power, position or notoriety to demean and attack women speaks to their character and not ours. we can put aside our political inclinations and say some things transcend politics. put aside your party affiliations and sin vestigate mr. trump's conduct. >> here threatened to sue them and apologized for what he said on the "access hollywood" tape. one of the top women said trump's accusers have every right to come forward. >> women who accuse anyone should be heard. they should be heard and they should be dealt with. i think we heard from them prior to the election and i think any woman who has felt violated or felt mistreated in any way have
9:29 am
every right to speak up. >> does the election mean that's a settled issue? >> that's for the people to decide. i know he was elected, but women should always feel comfortable coming forward and we have been willing to listen to them. >> what are did you make of that from nikki haley? she works for the president and viewed as a rising star in his administration and she said the women have every right to come forward. >> that was carefully worded even if it was on the spur of the moment. she is not saying i believe them or don't believe them. she is stating a principal that women who have accusations should be heard. that's a break with what the white house said. the white house said these women have lie and misrepresented what happened. donald trump said it wasn't true and it's not true and plus, he was elected anyway. you heard the distinction to say just because he was elected anyway doesn't mean women shouldn't have a voice. that's aux new with the
9:30 am
allegations. i think she tried to strike a witness there and she is clearly going beyond what the white house has been able to say. these women should be listened to and accusations should be taken seriously. >> i thought she struck the perfect tone in saying that the women should not be dismissed and the allegations should not be denied out of hand by anybody except maybe the president himself who has the right to do that. it is the case that we heard from the women before the election. we are hearing from them again now which is fine. it is i think now a matter for the congress impeachment is a matter for the congress if that's what they are asking for. one of the women called on congress to investigate and members of congress are accountable to the american people ultimately and she suggested kind of that that's where the matter ultimately will rest. >> the republicans control both chambers of congress, but if you want a clamoring for
9:31 am
investigation, impeachment is the only option congress would have and it has to originate in the house. even a trump critic, one of the democrats said if al franken has to resign, how does the president get to stay? >> it was known and litigated before the election. in my view it's distressing when people are willing to put morality aside and vote for or against someone based on what they will or won't do. >> do you think it gets reviewed? >> my hunch is it gets reviewed at the next election. we don't have the mechanism to review it in the senate. >> from a political standpoint, that's probably fair and accurate. >> it's an honest description of who controls congress. every indication is they are terrified of opening the questions as they pertain to their president.
9:32 am
they have been willing to go along with him on most things. hard to believe they would open a congressional investigation. if republicans win back or both houses, you can imagine the government oversight committee or special panel doing something. probably not with a lot of support from republicans. somehow looking into this maybe as a pretext to impeachment. >> there is a congress forcibly removing a president. and the first issue is not on the table at the moment. the second one, there are at least three democratic senators who suggested the president should resign like al franken did. the allegations against franken and the president are similar. in the case of franken there is photographic evidence and in the case of president trump there is a video where he boasts about it. if frarngen has to resign, what is the standard that president trump gets to stay even if congress doesn't forcibly remove
9:33 am
him. >> the difference with the president and it is somewhat complicated to say, but i don't think this president was elected by republican voters under the illusion that he was a morally upstanding person. as we heard on these videos, people knew what they were getting with trump which is not necessarily the case with al franken and the others. there is general agreement that it's much harder to remove a president from office in terms of the national drama and trauma it would cause. it's a much higher bar to clear than for democrats who essentially were able to push al franken out of office, cost-free. >> you had internal democratic family pressure on franken where as republicans still have the disfunction with the president. they don't like when this comes up and they think it hurts their brand. these allegations against the president trouble a lot of republicans. their answer is the american people knew this when they
9:34 am
voted. >> most americans if not all who voted had the information before the election. for us to try to relitigate the election is impossible. should people who have been victimized have an opportunity to have their day in court or presenting their information? i have no problem with that issue. the people of this country have the responsibility of choosing our president. they have chosen. >> i don't think he is wrong. voters had this information and voted for trump anyway. that came before the harvey weinstein story. the rolling cultural societal transformation over sexual harassment. i wonder if it was different had that predated the election. i tend to suspect not based on the type of voters that trump has drawn and what their priorities seem to be. this really did happen in an earlier era of politics.
9:35 am
>> democrats are counting on that not being the case anymore. the ulturcultural shift pressur to resign and i think they are hoping that now as you mentioned, women in the suburbs who tend to vote republican and will be independent will say enough is enough and i don't want to vote for a party that condones this behavior and the elected officials. i agree with josh. i'm not sure. >> that's why the roy moore race is so fascinating and it's a proxy election. late tomorrow night and wednesday we will be revisiting this and take you through 2018. the big test in alabama could answer this question. how much influence does steve bannon have?

together, we're building a better california. >> welcome back. welcome to the alabama senate race. steve bannon never gave up on electing roy moore even after the candidate was accused of pursuing teen girls as a district attorney. moore has stayed out of sight in the final days of the race, but hardly out of mind. ask democrats. they see a corollary between mr. moore and the state's divicive past. an alabama democrat said we are going to use roy moore just like we used to use george wallace standing in the school house door. jonathan martin in the "new york times" is down in alabama. doing a great job on the ground. how do the democrats really feel
9:41 am
going into tomorrow? >> thanks for having me on. they were standing a few feet behind where i am outside of the baptist church that is famous in american history for different reasons. democrats are typically fatalistic that won't surprise you. they say of course i'm voting for doug jones. the second thing that you heard and of course moore is going to win. what is striking is in the last few days, democrats and moderate independents and republicans are wondering and shed some of that pessimism and thinking there will be a rejection of moore.
9:42 am
they are talking about alabama deserving better. he immediately turned that appearance into a web ad and they had an automated phone call and going out to households in the state. they need the moderate republicans and they can't win with democrats alone in the state. this is roy moore versus the republican establishment. there are so many subplots and largely an alabama story. when it comes to richard shelby, who do you choose? >> a well respected senator there, but i don't think his opinion on the race or national

9:44 am
it looked like they call on moore to step on it. we would have seen moore resurrected endorsed like the way they have been over the last week or so. bannon was instrumental in creating a counter narrative that a lot of independents and moderate republicans find difficult to believe and the idea that these women are all lying or being paid at a media plot from being elected. he gave roy moore a reprieve and we will find out if it was enough to hold on. >> would the president have come back around if they turned on him? >> they seem to have given him the space to do that. without that who knows. they continued to slight and there could have been the bottom that fell out. >> i think the president was more -- he was in asia when the

news came out and he was initially sympathetic in the wake of the "access hollywood" tape. it was really moore in the denial on shawn hannity. they pushed them in the opposite direction and the reluctance to take the advice of advisers and said don't get involved in this. ivanka trump's comment that there is a special lace hell for child predators and trump pushes back on that and i think it was the president's insinktive reluctance to follow the advice of the people in the white house. that got him involved and almost more so than steve bannon. >> the stakes for mitch mcconnell and he doesn't want roy moore. he won't see it publicly, but i think he is rooting for the democrat to win because he
9:46 am
doesn't want to deal with roy moore and doesn't want to deal with steve bannon saying this. >> the folks are alabama will always decide, mitch. right? it was the numbers and the polls started coming back. they think you are a bunch of rudes. they hold you in total contempt. can anybody say that more tan what they did to judge moore? remember it's not judge moore they are trying to shut up. it's you. >> they want to shut him up. >> they can say they can take the results with a grain of salt. if roy moore win, that will be seen as a referendum against him and not just a problem on capitol hill, but a lot of senate campaigns in the run up to 2018.
9:47 am
they were pushing in the presidential campaign and pushed in the alabama race of don't let washington and the mainstream and the establishment tell you what to do. you should do what you want to do. he knows that that's a difficult for mitch mcconnell. >> the candidate in the race was brooks and not roy moore. are if roy moore makes it in and they were defending him and fighting any effort to remove him among republican senators and that will be a huge headache. >> president trump's former campaign chief under house arrest. back in front of a federal judge after new allegations from the special counsel. your heart... or joints. but do you take something for your brain. with an ingredient originally found in jellyfish,
