beautiful new virginia class submarines, the minest in the world. finally the defense bill authorizes major investments in the greatest weapon of all. it's warriors. the ndaa increases the size of the american armed forces for the first time in years and provides our military service members with the largest pay increase in eight years. now congress must finish the job by eliminating the defense sequester and passing a clean appropriations bill. it has to be perfecto. at this time of grave global threat, i urged democrats in congress to drop their shut down threats and descend clean funding and a clean funding bill

default mode is to lash out using twitter. >> senators have called for the president to resign because of the allegations lodged against him. the american people vote and it should be left there is their answer. members of the media under scrutiny and corporate america under scrutiny. a lot of the women during interviews, the president's tweet said never knew them, never met them. he appeared on television with them and that's false. senator elizabeth warren will bring them in two minutes much they had a press conference who said the president's smear was sexist and said she won't be silenced. are you trying to bully and intimidate and slut shame senator gillibrand. do you know who you are picking a fight with?

of the republican party about which there are challenges. >> it's another opportunity for democrats to claim this moral high ground to claim this victory. look at how we treated al franken versus how you are treating roy moore. versus us calling him out on behavior that is lewd and completely beneath the office of the presidency. like you said, that creates more problems for the republicans who are serving in congress than it does for the president. >> it's worth pointing out, senator gillibrand provoked the fight and she was the first to come out and call on al franken to resign. this is her issue. i don't think it's an accident that she chose to target donald trump knowing she would probably get a response like this. it would valgalvanize democrats. with al franken, there is a democrat who can replace him.

speak. voters making up their mind minds for republicans. this morning turn out at the polls reported to be fairly steady. roy moore sticking to his superstition and riding horseback to the ballot box. when the polls close, can a candidate accused of assaulting teen girls when he was a 30 something district attorney win a seat in the senate. in the national consciousness, this race is viewed as much more. pretty much a referendum. for those who disbelieve the women, it is a conservative call to arms against the media. if the republican wins, his own party will launch an ethics investigation. maybe even try to deny him senate committee seats. if the democrat wins, it shrinks to 51 and talk about anti-trump 2018 wave the explode. let's give you a preview.

this is the map. doug jones versus roy moore. let's go back in time. alabama is a ruby red republican state. just shy of that for president trump. 61% for mitt romney over then president barack obama seeking a second term. this is reliably red country. can doug jones win? yes, he can. the last time he was on the ballot running for the state supreme court. roy moore almost always under performs. for doug jones to win, he has to emulate what they did in the race against roy moore. win in selma and tuscaloosa and win big in birmingham. especially african americans and run up big margins where you have an african-american base. not just percentages, but numbers. the turn out like we saw in

virginia and new jersey. even that won't be enough. what else do you look for? look outside of huntsville. do republican voters and moderate voters go away. what do they do here? the suburbs and do moderate voters stay home or vote for doug jones. that's another thing to look for? it's not secret where y the president did a rally in pensacola, florida. he was talking to the mobile area. we count the votes and is there any blue in this part of the state? if that's the case, doug jones will be in play. here's something else. how many republicans will write in a candidate? roy moore just cracked 50% in 2012. a lot of democrats think doug jones think he can't crack 50%, but maybe can get to 48%. can they bring roy moore down and lower the line of victory?

we will count the votes starting in eight hours. roy moore knows what voters are thinking about. he frames it this way. >> one thing i don't like that the media say that a lot of people who are republicans claim they will vote for me and ignore what they believe. i am going to tell you, if you don't believe in my character, don't vote for me. >> roy moore last night. let's go around the table and set the stakes. number one, what about for president trump? he was late to the endorsement, but came all in. if doug jones wins this state in ruby red alabama, it's not only a rebuke of roy moore, but the president of the united states who went all in and did robo calls and the rally in pensacola. >> it is a rebuke of the president of the united states and a political defeat. before he was for roy moore, he

was for luther strange who lost. the president was infuriated for a while about backing luther strange and finding himself on the wrong end of that primary. this is ultimately a guy who likes to win and he will be irritated if he chose the wrong horse and we will all be on television talking about it as a rebuke to the president's moral authority as well as his political power. >> the democrats say they win anyway even if they lose the senate seat. roy moore comes to washington as a tainted senator and the party has to go through the anguish over do we see them or try to expel him and give him committee assignments and do we go near this guy? >> the democrats would rather have the seat. if moore were to get elected, it would highlight the problems republicans are having with women and issues of sexual harassment and keep trump in his own issues on the forefront.

i don't think it would be bad from a political standpoint. any democrat who said they are finding their way. >> the fact that it would cause problems for republicans here is a feature and not a bug for voters in al bam a. that's part of the reason to vote for roy moore and not something they do in spite of. >> one of the understated reasons why he won the presidency. he makes both parties nervous and the media nervous? send him. >> it's possible to overstate how roy moore's entry into the senate will consume wash. we are running out of words. nightmare, headache, pick your new word of the day. democrats will continue to use roy moore's election if he is elected as a symbol of the party's character and of president trump's character and continue to call the party the party that elected a man who was accused of molesting a child.

i value the sanctity of the ballot and i would say the people of alabama are good and decent and wonderful people. i have been proud to serve for 20 years in the senate. they will make the right decision, i'm sure. >> i believe we call that a punt. he is hardly the first and won't be the last to use that. i'm not telling you how i vote. that's private. it would be nice to know. >> there is a republican running in there and you think he would support them, but a lot of people know moore will be a problem. one of the striking things for me is i was at one of the few rallies that roy moore had and moore got a bigger applause attacking mitch mcconnell. i don't think he has illusions about the fact that attacks mitch mcconnell helps him with his base. no reason to think he discontinues that.

hold as we have been talking about how crucial turn out is for both candidates. one thing people are encountering inside the polling place, there is a bit of confusion with the way the single issue ballot is laid out. there is the option to vote a straight party ticket so you can fill in your bubble for republican or democrat, but there is the option to vote for your candidate. doug jones or roy moore. if there is a scenario, i'm told, where someone voted for a straight republican party ticket, but then also bubble in doug jones's name as the candidate, that vote for the candidate would win if the two votes are conflicting. if you vote a republican straight party ticket and also bubble in roy moore, it only counts as one vote and that vote is valid as well. it's not clear that you only need to do one or the other. >> if it's not clear and if it's close, we will be talking about the attorneys tomorrow.

the last 10 minutes and i can can tell you overwhelmingly, some are independent or democrats, but plenty of folks who vote for republicans and certainly did what george w. bush was in office. i talked to a late a few minutes ago and said what do do you for a living and she said i play all day. i thought that was a telling answer and i asked her view of president trump and she said he can't keep his mouth shot. they are flooding to the polls to stand here for the last few minutes. there is a steady stream midday. >> i want to you jump in. when you talk to voters, is this an alabama senate race between doug jones and roy moore and they are trying to nationalize it or are they processing whether it's the 52-52 senate majority and whether it's roy moore with mitch mcconnell or the potential implication? how do voters process this? >> i think it depends where you

have that conversation with those voters. if you were to be in midland city at roy moore's drain the swamp rally, you would hear people talking about how this is a fight against the gop establishment like senator mitch mcconnell and how the calls from steve bannon and others on the stage there about how people are trying to take their voice away and ensure that the people of this country recognize that the people in alabama believe in god. that's one version of the conversation you have with voters here. more often than not, the conversations i had have been from the al bammans want to make their state proud. it's not more complicated than that. >> on that very question. >> i was going to say there is an embarrassment factor in the more upscale parts of the state. they hear the jokes and they don't want to be the butt of the jokes any longer and recognize
