were a lot of people in the room describing haiti, el salvador and african countries as quote, s-holes. he didn't say it that way. he was unpresidential. let me read the full quote. why are we having all these people from s-hole countries come here. this is between trump and lawmakers. the account made by "the washington post." the source tells cnn this is how it happened. dick durbin was talking about the list of countries with temporary protected status of immigration. when durbin got to haiti, trump asked why the u.s. wants people from haiti in the united states. just to be clear about what he meant, trump added, the united states should get more people from norway. that's right. fewer people from haiti, el salve dor, africa and more from norway. enough said. outrage over the remark has been swift and furious. democratic congressman, elijah

cummings saying icon democrat this statement from the office of the presidency. i will always fight against the vulnerable and bigotry in all forms. the president's comments are, quote, further proof that make america great is really make america white again, agenda. on the republican side, one response from congresswoman mia love of utah. she's haitian-american tweeting the president's comments are unkind, divisive, elitist in the face of our nation's values. this is unacceptable from the leader of our nation. my parents came from one of those countries. the president must apologize. sarah is outside the white house. sarah, not only does it sound like an apology is not coming, the white house does not deny the president said these words. >> reporter: that's right. as you pointed out, it doesn't include an apology or denial. we haven't heard from anyone in the white house insisting this

didn't happen. a spokesman here put out a lengthy statement. here is a portion of what it says. president trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make the country with people who can contribute. one of the things white house staffers are talking about privately, one of the things my colleague, caitlin collins said is the notion staffers believe that the president's comments are going to resinate with his base, they are going to play well with the base of supporters that elected him. it is worth remembering, on election night when president trump was victorious, when it was clear he was going to be the next president of the united states, he said in that acceptance speech, he wanted to be president for all people. back to you. >> thank you very much, sara. joan walsh is the nation's national affairs. paris bernard, april ryan is going to join us in a moment.

it. i talked to the naacp, hilary shelton of the naacp who said when you look at the word racist, how it comes together, it's racial prejudice and power. he says that begs the question of, was this a racist statement? racial prejudice and power makes racism. that's what the naacp says. for a president of the united states who deals with other countries, he is not diplomatic. this is ugly at the face. it was just flat out wrong. we don't hear those kind of things from that office, the highest office in the land. >> right. that is the crucial point here. i want to say, we talked about the condemnation. it is bipartisan. i want to make the pounlt, overwhelmingly, more democrats have come out. so far, mia love and orrin hatch have come out. we have heard nothing from republican leadership.

comments. they say like other nations, merit based immigration, president trump is fighting for solutions to make our party stronger welcoming those to contribute and simulate into our great nation. combine that with, as you say, s-houses, they are saying if you are from an s-house, you cannot contribute to our economy. that is what they are saying. >> the level of education in this country, the level of skills is not high. not by fault of those who live there, they have broken political seasons and economic systems. they have political strife and war. that is not good for the people living there. like, canada and australia, they emphasize merit. there's nothing racist in that policy. again -- if you have a system like that, you have more south asians and east asians. is that wrong? is there anything wrong with them? >> i can agree.

we are continuing to follow the breaking news and reaction after the down right offensive comments from president trump that put the white house in damage control. lawmakers are outraged and speaking out after president trump, during a private oval office meeting with members of congress, questioned why the united states allows people to come from haiti, el salvador. the president added, the u.s. should get more people from countries like norway. one white house official predicting to cnn the racist remark will resinate with the base. we are out front live on capitol hill as more people are starting to react. what are some of the new responses you are hearing? >> reporter: there is swift reaction from democrats and

republicans. this is in from former cia director, john brennan. leading liberty, founding fathers and generations of right thinking americans are weeping over the atrocious comments attributed to donald trump, who continues to demonstrate daily, he is a deeply flawed person. that is from the former cia director. many democrats on capitol hill are charged up over the comments. one democrat calling it point-blank racism on the part of president trump. other choice words from democrats, an embarrassment, disgraceful, small minded on the part of president trump. the chair of the black caucus saying these comments are further proof that his make america great again agenda is really a make america white again agenda. it's not just democrats. republicans are charged up about this as well. we heard from congresswoman maya

guest who talked about the education of immigrants. i want to read something from the center for american progress. december 20th, 2012, five facts about black immigrants and the united states. go to fact three. i want you to follow it. three, black immigrants are one of the most educated immigrant groups. they have more college education and higher rates of degree attainment than any other immigrant group in the united states of america. this is fact. so, the problem is, a lot of times we get into these discussions and start talking what i feel, what i feel. people need to deal with fact before they go out there. it's unfortunate that the american president, who sets the tone, who is the moral leader is starting the discussion and it's going the wrong way. unfortunately, we have people on the panel speaking ill informed about things, about a group he seems not to understand. there are a large portion of

let me ask you this question. paris -- he was specifically referencing black and hispanic countries, those are the ones that were referenced. i was referring to april when referring to black education. i want to ask about something you said. the president would have said i want more nigerians if he was in the oval office yesterday than the president of norway. i want to remind you, the president said, nigerian immigrants would never go back to their huts in africa. that's a report from "the new york times." he denies it. are you sure he would have said i want more nigerians? >> if the president denies it, that's what i have to go on. to this point, going back to april's issue about facts, what we are doing here, we have to be careful. april went into this about all the african countries. that is not what this alleged incident is about. the president allegedly responded to them asking about

love. you know, you have so many immigrant people, immigrant families here who are scared of the pain when this president was elected because they knew he could possibly start sending some of their family members back home. so, if i was called on a couple days ago, i was going to ask, talk about the love. but, right now, the love seems to be missing. it seems to be more division. i want to go back to a point you made. i think about the immigrants from haiti versus the immigrants from cuba. there's always been a different scenario in this nation when it come toss haitian immigrants how they sit back and others are allowed to stay. haiti is one of the poorest nations in the western hemisphere. at the same time, when you think of this, they suffered a d devastating earthquake during the obama administration. >> the anniversary is tomorrow, 2010. >> now, they are talking about sending them back, you know?

president trump says he's got a good relationship with kim jong-un. this is the same person president trump called a maniac, little rocketman. in an interview with "the wall street journal," trump says i have a good relationship with kim jong-un. i have relationships with people, i think you people are surprised. when asked if he spoke with him, he said i don't want to comment on it. i'm not saying i have or haven't, i just don't want to comment on it. peter nicholas interviewed the president. were you surprised by the comments? >> reporter: i have to say i was. it was surprising to hear president trump has any kind of relationship with kim jong-un, which is what he told us during our interview. it was surprising. have you talked to kim jong-un and he said, he wouldn't answer the question. it seemed clear, there was something in his head that he

was thinking about. there was something concrete that he had in mind. he was open to a diplomatic track. some of his tweets have been bombastic and talking fire and fury and using arsenal against north korea. much more placated in our interview. >> it was concrete in mind that he was trying to convey. >> yeah. >> obviously, as you point out, in diplomatic relations to open the door and there was a conversation, although, very much in line with what he likes to do, open the door and not answer the question. trump called kim a maniac, a bad dude. kim has called trump meantally d derranged. >> he said this is a tactic he uses. it's not personal.

it's something he does and doesn't necessarily mean this person is forever in the doghouse with him. it's something that he's doing with strategic purpose in mind. he talked about this and other contacts and talked about steve bannon and having moments as well. it's kind of the way he operates saying nothing is permanent with him, it's a negotiation and transactional. >> which is incredible, opening the door to steve bannon. the quote to you was, referring the tweets with kim jong-un, you will see that a lot with me, then suddenly, they are my best friend. i could give you 20 examples, you could give me 30. >> it's hard to imagine how you come back from calling the leader of north korea short and fat or little rocketman. he is saying this is not done cavalierly. it's done with a strategic purpose. we have to see how it plays out.

it's an open question how kim jong-un reads the tweets and messages. does he understand what is in trump's head? >> thank you very much for giving us details on that. now, i want to go to former cia, michael hayden and the director of the nsa. let me start with you, dr. hayden on this, what the president was trying to say, these tweets are not done cavalierly and done with purpose. do you buy it? >> i think there's a bit of strategy behind them. i don't think they are artfully done. the advisers would oppose the language he uses. as peter suggests, there are two off ramps to the crisis with north korea. one is fire and fury here. the other is negotiations here. right now, the president's language is over here with negotiations. i view that as a positive development. >> obviously, there's no

diplomatic relations. we know there's back door conversations, however, the president opening the door to possibly having direct talks to kim jong-un. not confirming it, but opening that door. is there a way the president of the united states has a direct relationship, a phone call with the north korean dictator? is that possible? >> i seriously doubt it and doubt whether the president has a relationship with kim jong-un. that was put out there. i think it was unartful. again, that's more positive from my point of view than fire and fury and annihilation. >> peter talked about the talked with north and south korea. kim trying to separate seoul and washington. the quote was z, if i was them, i would try. i'm president, other people aren't. i know more about wedges than any other human being that's lived. general, you ran the national security agency, cia, is he

right on this? he knows more about driving wedges between people? >> i have no idea about the president's way to drive wedges, but he is correct the north koreans are trying to create between us and south korean allies. frankly, although we want to isolate the north koreans and keep step on their part. frankly though we want to isolate the north koreans and keep pressure on them, north has used this opening with south and upcoming olympic games to get a little bit of a breather and dialogue with someone else. i understand why the north did it, actually understand why the south did it. there are limits with regard to how far the south can go though with their dependence on the american alliance. >> you also heard that president met with members of congress about immigration. quote why are we having all these people from s-hole countries coming here. white house has not denied any

of this and continued to say should bring in more people from countries like norway. reaction? >> we all should be a bit embarrassed, ashamed and collecti collectively a little bit frightened. the president of the united states is not appealing to your angels or our nation's values. >> do you believe from your perspective what he said was racist? >> i don't want to make a personal judgment on the president. think it was totally inappropriate. i don't know of any other example in recent american history, we have a mottled past, but recent history where a president says something in environment where as you suggested he knew it would become public. >> you ran the national security

agency and you know the law on spying on americans and foreign nationals on american soil better than anyone else out there. president tweeted that house votes on controversial fisa act today. this is the act that may have been used with the help of the discredited and phony dossier to see badly surveil and abecause the trump campaign by previous administration and others. tweet obviously had factual inaccuracy. but he was advocating to vote no. got a phone call from speaker ryan after that tweet and two hours later seemed to correct it. going back on twitter. with that said, i have personally directed the fix to unmasking process since taking office. tod today's vote is about surveillance of foreign bad guys on foreign land.
