tv New Day CNN January 12, 2018 5:00am-6:00am PST
5:00 am
this morning. lets get right to it. >> this is cnn breaking news. >> welcome to your "new day," it is friday, january 12th, 8:00. john berman is joining me. >> it is a new day. a new uncensored day. >> yes, it is really is here and of these comments donald trump denied making. they were racially charged of immigrants the president tweeted the language he used was tough but he claims he did not slam i am immigrants and africa and el salvador of people from blank hole country. the president did not deny that he made those remarks or either of the senators. >> you know who we have not heard from, republican leader paul ryan and mitch mcconnell.
5:01 am
it is 8:00 a.m. in the east, tick-thomas hoc tick-tock. speaker paul ryan, you have to assume that you approve that the president calling shithole country and he wants the haiti out. we don't know because they are nowhere. speaker paul ryan and leader mcconnell and let us know how you feel. this is how the president's hometown paper is handling it this morning. the picture of the words, speak for itself. we are joined by the reporter who broke this story wide open. a clean break that set off a giant frenzy, white house reporter washington post, josh, thank you for being with us, congratulations on the breaking news. lets get your reaction to what
5:02 am
the president now says, he says this was not the language used despite the fact that the white house did not deny it to you or anyone over night and now every news organization is massively reporting. >> i will standby reporting yesterday, we took the comments that we want to report directly to the white house and told them what we are going to say and we did not get a denial, we confirmed it multiple places and multiple outlets and cnn confirmed it as well. this comes 15 hours later, the president obviously has the right to express his opinion on this story as he has on twitter. we standby reporting 100%. >> give us more and expand on that. the president was saying to this group of bipartisan senators that why do we have to take people from these blank hole countries of africa, haiti and el salvador. >> there was a bipartisan
5:03 am
meeting yesterday where lyndsey graham and durbin hoping the president will sign off on it. but, at the meeting, there were a number of conservative lawmakers as well. the president did not like the deal. graham and durbin proposed c cutting the pizza lottery by some. and the president did not like that. he suggested that we have immigrants from norway and asian countries and we should not have immigrants from shithole countries, that's the president's word. it is not a remark. we know the president to be pretty speaking his mind at times. obviously, you remember the "access hollywood" tape. >> ultimately, your story, i
5:04 am
don't think the first story includes from asian countries. i think you have sources from the white house that he also have said asian countries, is that true? >> yes, that's correct. we put up a version of the story and i continue to report and my colleagues continue to report. as you know those meetings there is a dozen more participants so you try to train from a number of people. do you remember him saying this or do you remember him saying this and specificity that you feel comfortable in reporting. >> in reaction, you said they were taken aback by the president's comment, expand on that a little bit. i have to imagine hearing the president of the united states use these words had to be shocking. >> it was but i was told this was a contentous exchange. there was frustration from the
5:05 am
senators and the president. we have not seen senators gone on the record on every remarks. >> why not, why won't they use their names? >> it is a good question. a lot of republicans do not want to repeat on a person at their own party. we have seen that time and time again, when the president says something controversial, he gets into a difficult part. a lot of republicans in congress have constuency. >> contradicting him is not what they want to do something lightly. >> josh, thank you very much for sharing your report with us. it is great to get it straight from the source. >> lets bring in wesley lauer.
5:06 am
>> how do you see the president on this? >> look, we are using a lot of different language to describe this vulgar comment from the president, racially charged. it is clearly and obviously r raci racist, when you despair people from black and brown countries. paraphrasing of what the reporting says. i think that as significant as the president's comments were and under scores who he is and what he believes. these are not dissimilar or significant with his previous comments. we are constantly hearing of all the president's worst behavior. it is a credit to colleagues and friends of mine like josh dawsey but speaks to how the people
5:07 am
around the president feels. >> they'll leak it and they're that offended. the people in the room were that offended and they shared it with josh, your colleague but they won't go on the record and won't use their name, what does that tell you? >> for example, we don't know who josh's sources are and none of us do. and assuming either word of the room itself heard directly. the president likes to get into these personality wars. you can imagine a world in which senator graham comes and said i heard a lot of racist comments today and i thought they're unacceptable. a fight between lyndsey graham and donald trump and trump making up names to mock him.
5:08 am
and so you can see how if this is something you want to get out, you may decide putting your name on it is not the best way to get the substance of the conversation of what the president said. >> 8:07 a.m. i keep on checking my computer and twitter to see if mitch mcconnell or paul ryan may have find the time to weigh in on this when the leader o f the country racist things. david gregory, the silence is de deafening. >> republican leaders don't want to get in the way of that. it is a newscaasty business to on the wrecking ball. the ones that have done it are those that's retired. you can imagine those in the room negotiating are trying to
5:09 am
focus on the deal and trying to focus on getting an immigration deal done and they're willing to let trump be trump as lewandowski says and let other people deal with him and let other people evaluate him for what he is. this is just a revelation and another examples of who he is and how he thinks and how he does not understand the power of his words or the power of words generally by any human being and let alone the president of the united states because from one day to the next, he can lurch. here is a cynical take on what can also be going on here. if you are a republican who wants a deal on this, maybe you think hey, the president gone out there and as offensive as he could be and fires up those people who would agree with this and support him and don't want to see immigration reform and that makes him big and tough and sounds bad and he can turn
5:10 am
around and do a deal. there is another step towards earning his job. you cannot get anymore cynical or dark than that. that's the kind of analysis that you have to lay on top of this president. >> you said there is no surprise who the president is. we know who the president is. who are they? who are you, speaker ryan and mitch mcconnell, who you choose to be and what you choose to say about this reflects on you. i suppose the cynical explanation of it, might be the most charitable? >> it maybe a bit charitable because it is not a good answer. these are people making calculations based on whatever is driving them and whatever end goal it is. i am not going to justify for them or speak for them. the coverage for this president, we got a lot of heat for
5:11 am
negative coverage against the president. the president is speaking for himself. the reporting is 100% solid. the fact that the president tweets 15 hours later that's not the language tahat's used, gues what, no one is going to believe that. they lost our trust. that's just a fact and anyone wants to come start to debate this and this is biassed, bring it on. your issue is with the president who's out spoken, he is what he is and now we can analyzed what got in here and what the fallout is and what the politics are and how people respond to it and where it gets it. he is what he is. >> one of the things we have been struggling with this morning, the president does not know that there are people with merit coming from haiti and coming from africa. he does not know that. he wants to leave out those
5:12 am
blankful countries, that's just the truth. >> i would hope that he would sit down with congresswoman mia love, for example, folks that are immigrants themselves and family members who are immigrant themselves. it seems clear that the views expressed by the president, clearly evidence in the most god faith charitable version deep ignorance of who these people are and what they bring to our country. it is particularly striking that this morning is what the eighth anniversary of the day of the earthquake of 300,000 haitians killed. i was watching earlier getting ready to come on air watching the clip of anderson's last nig night talking about his resilience. is it efficient or is it
5:13 am
corrupt. and the way that some of our own foreign policies and interactions created the environment, so there is clearly some deep historical and cultural society rignorance. people here haitian americans are seeing this. >> it is also martin luther king jr. weekend. >> people who are coming from africa are waking up and seeing this. i am struck by something that was said. the president had to be told by paul ryan where he stood on the
5:14 am
reauthorization right now. this seems to be the area where he's very consistent. >> yeah, i think he's both ignorant and in other areas, he's willfully ignorant. he rose to national promise on a back of a racist lie about barack obama and who petalled racist views in everything, you ask anyone of color in this country what it means or by the way, ask women what it means, they'll tell you exactly what it means. when so many people of color in this country who's on the decent getting more equal treatments they than have gotten in the past. this is the kind of nationalist that says lets make us great by appeal to the worst. that's what nagstionalists do. that's how the president is acting. on top of what he disregards of the greatness of the immigrants
5:15 am
who built this country and what they contributed in. if you met anyone who's a new immigrant, just speaking to somebody living in washington or the dmv, whether they are south asia or from countries in africa or southamerica. these are patriotic folks. >> oh my god, so true. >> they are committed to the country and learning and incredibly committed to the news and understanding where the country is going. the pain they must be feeling, wait a minute, i thought america is something else. the other piece of all of that is the implications of all of this. how do you negotiate with democrats and on a deal when all you do is get in your own way. it can all come back to it. you can turn the volume down on cnn. you still have the president and what he says and you have to deal with that.
5:16 am
>> david gregory and west lowery, thank you very much for those comments. >> we have not heard from the gop leaderships. we'll speak with a republican lawmaker about that, next. with a $500,00fe insurance policy. how much do you think it cost him? $100 a month? $75? $50? actually, duncan got his $500,000 for under $28 a month. less than a dollar a day. his secret? selectquote. in just minutes, a selectquote agent will comparison shop nearly a dozen highly-rated life insurance companies, and give you a choice of your five best rates. duncans wife cassie got a $750,000 policy for under $22 a month. give your family the security it needs at a price you can afford.
5:18 am
5:20 am
salvador comes from blank hole country. the president needs to apologize. so why are are all republican leaders silent. joining us now is our congressman. thank you for being here. >> i disagree with it. i think it is important to look at what's the context in negotiations in the conversations that's taken place. >> i understand. stick with me on the comment, was it a racist comment? >> i don't think so. >> i don't think donald trump is racist, if you look at the economy, it is affecting everybody, african-americans and asians. >> okay, take this, look at daca.
5:21 am
you have these kids that come here in no fault of their own and he's trying to cut a deal to give them a permanent status. when kids come here, again no fault of their own and the uncertainty that comes along with it, i want to fix the root cause problem that bring kids in. >> why did he focus on haiti and africa and only places where they don't look like norwegians. >> those two things are compassionate. dealing kids but affecting the root cause of the problem which is border security. these are the only countries that were included in the temporary protective status. listen, why don't we bring in the beste and the brightest. they may come from el salvador or haiti. i don't want to exclude these other countries. >> he says haitians, get them out of here. >> oh, i didn't hear that.
5:22 am
>> that was another comment that was quoted in "the washington post." >> he is the one who -- this is not the first time he made comments that's racist, black athletes are son of bitches. >> get haitians out of here and they have aids. >> i have a white man and married to a latina. many are applauding what the president is doing. they're the ones that's getting better wages and they cared about crushing isis and their 401-k have improved. they look at a large stroke of what the president does and they love what he's doing. they look at this and say i want to put america first. there is some problems in haiti
5:23 am
and dysfunctional government but there is good people coming in there. why cannot i say i want the smartest and brightest people that contributes the most. >> i understand. you know that'simmigrants. you know we say we'll take your poor, and hungry masses. we don't want that anymore? >> is that all we take alyson? >> i don't hear the president mentioning that, i hear the president mentioning norwegians. >> to your point of only the best and the brightest. >> that's not what we say in america. >> could you go back to the comment, it is in defensible and you and i are on the same page. sn i said it last night, mia love, she has love for the president. if you give a specific status to these countries, the president's
5:24 am
reference, instead of saying no, no, in america, what's best for us the best and brightest country. i think it makes sense. by the way, if you look back, we are talking about a daca deal and an immigration deal. the president is in a situation where he wanted to chant migration and security border in exchange for dealing with daca dreamers. he did in the get anything out of this. he got less than 10% border wall funding. the president was annoyed and frustrated. what are you offering me? do you think it is a good deal or do you think i am stupid? >> because i am struck by the br all of your eight children, any of them 8 or 12?
5:25 am
>> i have two 12 years old. what are you going tell your 12 years old that the president does not want anybody from africa? he does said that. guess what, there are property stricken countries and does america open its arms to these folks? guess what, they then can become the best and the brightest through our educational system, right? >> i don't dispute that. that's happening throughout histo history. when you say we are only taking certain groups of people of certain regions in the world. we educate some of the brightest mind at harvard at mit and we send them home and we don't let them say in america. >> that's the issues with dreamers. they have been here and educated here. you are arguing against your own interests. >> i believe in dreamers. i am saying people come here on student visas and they get
5:26 am
educated in the best schools of america and we send them home. >> this is why the dreeamers stay. >> is that a compassionate policy? >> the democrats say they want to secure the border but a clean bill to fix the dreamers situation and not sending them home. >> we have done this for generations where we'll do amnesty today and border security tomorrow. democrats say from barack obama and chuck schumer, 2006, today with donald trump they say we cannot have a border, lets secure the border. don't we have the right to decide who comes in and out of the country. >> i get where you are coming from but is this going to be a deal? >> i think so. we want to deal with the root
5:27 am
5:31 am
today president trump gets his first physical since becoming president. it will be conducted to his physician. the white house will release the results. doctor sanjay gupta with more, what are we learning today? >> i think we'll learn about his overall physical health. we know he takes a cholesterol lowering medication for that and his weight. the number you see in terms of cholesterol is based on his medication he's taking. it is about a four hour exam, they're going to focus on his
5:32 am
heart and things like stroke and cancer screenings and may ask him about anxiety and depression and stress, those are standard questions that are asked. we heard about his lifestyle over the last year, his lack of exercise and the impact of that on his physical health, those are things they'll want to probe as well. it is a thorough exam and what you have heard is the mental health component of it is not likely to be done and to be fair, it is not typically done of the last 16 years that i have been covering these stories, it is not typically done and it does not sound like it will be done anyway. >> sanjay, stick around. there are growing questions of the president's mental fitness. briefed members of the congress on the danger that's evident that the president is dangerous.
5:33 am
she's an assisting clinical professional at yale. >> thank you for having me. >> first, i am speaking for myself and not my university. i have spoke with the members of congress about concerning signs that i was seeing. the signs of mental and psychological and cognitive and n neurological impairments that i was seeing in the president. there ought to be some kind of mechanism for assessing his capacity. i am not diagnosing him. i am not interested in mr. trump's life.
5:34 am
we actually have a national coalition now that's thousands of mental health professionals who are concerned about the effects he's having and the risks he's posting on public health by virtue of the officer. >> let me ask you this -- >> it would be a capacity of evaluation. >> that's what you think should happen today at the physicals? >> we have been told there is no specific or comprehensive mental health exam. >> because none of us are tru truly -- therefore, cannot really recommend to his white house to do a certain test or not. we can simply alert mainly the public about the signs that we see because the public has the

right to know especially if they are in danger due to psychological cognitive or neurological instability. >> professor, here is the thing and you know full well what you have said publicly and what you told members of congress is controversial. the american psychiatric association, this is the principle of medical ethics section 7.3. a physiatrist may share with the public of his/her expertise. >> now, you have not conducted an examination and you are offering a professional opinion here. >> no, i am just alerting about the signs. the signs say other people may not recognize because they are the why variations in normal.

most people who may not see individuals or impaired may miss these signs. for example, someone having a yellow face, individuals may see that's their normal complex, a physician may look for signs of a liver failure or awarding signs or signs of concerns, then you will recommend of an km examination. i am a strong proponent of it. i have kept with it as a physiatrist, i have asked to diagnose someone without seeing them. i can confidently say that i have abide the principle water goals and kept them and even here. i do not agree of the american psychiatric association changing the interpretation of the rules going from diagnosing to the

5:38 am
to some of the greatest dangers but we also know that he has already been in danger, there is bullying in schoolyards that directly cite his words. and unprecedented hate crimes that continues this day and 22% rise gun deaths is unusual since his candidacy. we know he has -- these are widespread cultural effects he's having, but we know that there are many signs that could lead to a risk of enormous danger and those are dangers of a magnitude that we cannot reverse. just by virtue of the technology that we have and the amount of

arsenal that we allow the president to have at his disposal. we take all of that into considerations when accessing dangerousness. >> doctor lee and doctor gupta, i thank you both of you. >> london's mayor calling out president trump saying the president's reasons for cancelling his trip to london is bogus. what he said, next.
5:42 am
president trump denies making a racist comment in the oval office. mr. trump says the language he used in the office is tough. he claims he did not slam el salvador and other nations coming from blank hole countries. the president telling other officials that he probably had good relationships with kim jong-un. the president will not say if the two men have spoken. london mayor is lashing out
5:43 am
president trump for cancelling the visit next month to london. the president says he was pulling out the ribbon cutting for what he calls a bad deal surrounding it. >> merican says trump backed out because he knows he will be greeted with large projects. in southern california, evacuations zone have been expanded as the search continues to find all the missing in the mudslides. dozens more are still missing. for more of the five things to know go to cnn/newday.com. >> president trump insisted that he's not a racist, we'll talk about that in the bottom line. next. here is amazing. so we give farmersanic like win more plants. to grow more delicious coffee. which helps provide for win's family. all, for a smoother tasting cup of coffee.

is denying making a racially charged comment about immigrants. mr. trump tweeted he used tough language but he did not clarifying if immigrants from africa and haiti and el salvador comes from blank hole countries. >> lets get to the bottom line with it with our senior political commentator van jones. what did you think when you heard this? >> well, i thought it is obviously racist. it was not accurate. i think the news media has not listened. it turns out about 30% of americans have college degrees and 43% of i mmigrants of afric have college degrees. 11% of americans have an advance degrees beyond college. so it is not just that it is
5:49 am
racist. it is ignorant. part of the problem that we have is that he relies on these stereotypes and then we argue about these stereotypes. african immigrants are coming here and, education entertainment are out performing everybody including a lot of asians. we don't talk about that. if barack obama had any point says i don't want any immigrants from europe, i want i mmigrants from africa. the right wing would have gone insane. he never did that. this president does not know how to make america great again. the people that make america great again is immigrants from haiti and africa coming here and doing working their butts off.
5:50 am
>> he never said anything about haitians other than haiti is a poor and troubled country. he never said take them out, made up. i have a wonderful relationship with haitians. probably should record future meetings. jake tapper reporting that the shithole country was referring to all countries in africa and not haiti. the president somehow thinks that distinction this morning if it is true helps him. >> your thoughts? >> well, i think he was watching the early morning show because 20 minutes after he was reputed by "fox and friends," he issued a tweet what he never said what a room full of people heard him say and his spokesperson did not deny yesterday. he's watching tv and saw a tape of himself making that speech down in miami to the haitian community and felt like he needed to leap into that.
5:51 am
>> look, the larger issue to me is i said that yesterday. it is not a question, this debate whether is he a racist, it is not about him, it is about us and who we are. united states of america always stood something. i am a son of a refugee, at the time my father came here, there was the same kind of native settlements aimed at eastern europeans and italians and you heard the same kind of language. immigrants came as they have over generations and immigrants have built this country. immigrants renewed this country. one of the reasons we are who we are and why we are so competitive as a country because people come here to work and contribute and live their dreams and to send a signal to the world that we are going to demean people that we are going to close our borders and so son
5:52 am
on is a self defeating impulse. america needs to stand up even if our president does not for those values that animated us from the beginning. >> david, i am curious, do you think that formal president obama will say anything about this? >> you know what, i have not spoken to him in the last 24 hours, i don't know what he will do. i know how strongly he feels about what i just said. obviously, his father came here was educated here and you know, so i know how strongly that he feels about these values, he's been selective of what he says because he feels as a former president, he has to choose his spots but he also said that when fundamental values are affronted, he will speak. >> go ahead van.

>> it is interesting, we have al first lady who's here and she's doing a great job. the average income for household in europe is about 30,000. she's a college drop out. she comes from a country that's not the shining star of europe. she's not well educated but she comes here and done a great job. why is this tough to understand that happens from folks in africa. the last thing i will say, i am bragging on the entertainment of africans, you don't have to be rich or have a degree to be worthy. you can be poor, you cannot have a college degree and you can still be worthy and still do a great job. america is about that. don't take that from us, if you want to stereotype people, i am sorry, these stereotypes do not holdup for african immigrants, we out performing a bunch of immigrant groups including a bunch of asians.
5:54 am
you don't have to be rich or have a college degree to be worthy. lets the africans and the haitians and el saldorans do. it is about us and tabout america. does that include mitch mcconnell and paul ryan who at 8:54 still have not come out. >> this is a real moral gut check for the republican party if the republican party if republican leaders are willing to stands up. someone in the white house said yesterday on a background basis that they're not worried because this will play well with the base meaning their base and it is playing well with the alt-right kind of base and cultures and others were excited about what the president had to

say but i think there are a lot of other people in this country, republicans and democrats and independence who are deeply embarrassed by it and worried about this kind of behavior again and again, if i were a republican leader, i would not want to put all my eggs in this crazy basket. i would want to stand up for those fundamental values that america has stood for. it will be interesting to see if they'll do that. >> i don't think you can call his space the alt-right. i think that of the the fringe element of his base. i have a hard time thinking that these kmecomments are going to just fine with millions of people are supporting the president because they are other issues they are interested en. i am having a hard time of us using broad brush strokes this morning. >> i don't think tha

that -- somebody said the base of this is alt-right. fox news came out a little bit and mia love who voted for trump came out of et. the part of the base that's being referenced, they call it alt-right and, i call it white racist. >> listen, if trump does not like those people and does not want them to be apart of his base, he should say it loudly and forcefully. >> i agree the part of the base making that distinction. gentlemen, thank you very much. be sure to watch tomorrow, david is going to speak with the former secretary of state, "the axe files." >> have a great weekend.
