democrats, what did they get? a promise of good intentions? is that helping dreamers sleep better tonight. kellyanne conway says democrats made the right deal. let's see if she can prove it. it's time to get after it. i'm chris cuomo. welcome to "prime time." breaking news tonight. shut down delayed. both sides approved a spending plan to keep the government running. just for three weeks. i guess that buys democrats and republicans more time to strike a deal on immigration. as i said we'll go one on one with kellyanne conway. counsellor to president trump. let's begin where we do. with the special series facts first. right now, democrats and republicans are both saying they made a great deal. u yo keep hearing the simple. democrats came to their senses and put americans first. put the americans before those scary illegal immigrants as peep
10:01 pm
on the right call them. >> the government shut down we're pleased to see senator schumer accept the deal that president trump put on the table from the very beginning. which was to responsibly fund the government and debate immigration as a separate issue. >> now republicans and democrats both say they had difficulty knowing where the president was on this deal. but let's put that to the side. the leader of the democrats in the senate chuck schumer, he has a tougher sell than the republicans do. he has a deal to make a deal. with a senator majority leader who isn't pumped to protect the dreamers. i asked to have schumer on. i didn't get a response. that tells you something. he said this today. >> we can get the 60 votes in the senate. for a daca bill. and now there is a real path way to get a bill on the floor and through the senate. it is a good solution. and i will vote for it. >> here is the truth.
10:02 pm
both sides are over sifrlyfying. w why? to please their tribes. the truth, is it's complicated. that's the truth. that's why pelosi and schumer don't seem to be opt same page. the progressives aren't happy with either. that'shy mccnell and ryan were quizzical and weren't quiet. the president all by absent. relaying his thoughts about the deal by a written statement. the gop is in control. they have the house, they have the senate and they have the white house. they should be able to govern. shame on them. for not being able to make a deal with the democrats. and the leadership by all accounts was not really even trying. the shut down formented division. and as for the democrats, this was their big shot. they got rolled on the tax bill. sorry. they did. and the shut down was the only
10:03 pm
leverage they had. because they're in the minority. did they fix the tax bill for the middle class workers? did they argue that if you want this cr you have to put in a provision that corporations need to use a portion to hire folks? no. did they get a commitment for the dreamers? no. at the root of this all from both sides and by the president is a lack of trust. it brings this song it's a matter of trust by billy joel. in sharp focus. i have lived long enough to have learned the closer you get to the fire the more you get burned. that won't happen to us. because it's always been a matter of trust. let's see what happens now. that the gop has what it wanted and the dreamers are still waiting. now we have a great opportunity for you. we're going one on one with kellyanne conway. counsellor to president trump. as i teased my friend, tonight
10:04 pm
you will do something i have never seen you do on television before. >> this is a family show. >> absolutely. my family is watching. my mother included. she likes you. this is the proposition. i don't get why this was a good deal for the democrats to make. why did the democrats do the right thing today in your opinion? >> because they did the wrong thing three days ago. they wasted three days worrying the heck out of parents who have children relying on the chip. 9 million children relying on that for healthcare. military families worried if they get a paycheck going forward. lots of federal employees some of whom my colleagues here at the white house did nothing wrong except fall victim to a party that's moving so far to the left in the interest of mollifying the base. it shut down the government on friday and three days later couldn't see anything that was different. the only thing that changed for friday to today is the number of
10:05 pm
democrats who went from no to yes. not a single republican went from no to yes. >> what did they get? sfl. >> the ire of the base. democrats made two errors. voted against the tax cuts that have spurred billions of dollars for millions of people. through pay raises, through bonuses, through investments. 20,000 skrobs fr jobs from appl. they're on the wrong side. they vetted against tax cuts and voted for shutting down the government. >> they did the rig thing today. what did they get for it? a deal usually both sides get something. >> they did the right thing by not paying politics with peoples lives. they got the ire of their base. >> they got the ire of the baits. they wouldn't have made the deal. >> i said everything we have been saying all weekend came true. i was on cnn two nights ago.
10:06 pm
ialked about h the people are aitions for 20 are shutting down the government. trying to mollify the base. what happened is i said that night too, with the four of five democrats peeling off from schumer's crazy idea to shut down the government that night. that was a sign of things to come. today many more democrats, you know what happened. the democrats rushed the hill. some said this is not the hill i want to die on. what are we doing? if i gave them a pen and said please under line what you democrats disagree with. it would have come back blank. there was no -- >> that's not true. there's a whole list. >> please answer the question. what did they disagree with? not chip. >> you didn't have the community health centers in there. chip, you took chip. so all you did was give it back. they didn't get more. you said they saved kids and
10:07 pm
health insurance. you took it from them. you pulled the funding. >> here's another thing they did. the democrats ironically wasted the weekend on the dreamers. they didn't -- >> one thing at a time. >> they didn't help them. >> if you cared about chip you would have done something four months ago. you did nothing. >> that's not true. >> don't thank you for giving it back to us. that's the deal. i don't know why they made the deal. >> that's not what a government shut down is about. it's a very difficult night for democrats. i get it. even the headlines are really taking the democrats and leadership to task. i'm with delaware senator on this. a democrat in delaware. and he actually holds joe biden's old senate seat. tonight he made clear that he's worried that the people who are running in 2020 aren't running as problem solve rs. they are drifting to the left. that is out of touch with
10:08 pm
mainstream america. >> which is moving further to the white. the irony you accuse the democrats of playing their base. what else did you do? what are you treating immigrants like they're monsters? that's coming from your base. >> don't even go there. this president -- this president sat there for an hour with durbin to his right. on camera. and told the world including cnn who covered it live. and completely. he told the world that he's willing to negotiate a resolution on daca. because the congress failed to they had nine months. and six more. president obama put in an illegal executive order. >> it never made it through the courts. >> this president is trying to fix it. >> he's not trying to fix it. he ended it. he ended it with a date certain. he cared about the dreamers -- hold on. >> i can understand why democrats are mad. >> i'm mad because -- i'm not
10:09 pm
you're not letting me ask the next question. >> you're trying to ask and answer. >> here it is. which role is who? >> are you making fun of the president of the united states? the guy is live skpg working behind me because he's elected by the people. he insists on making this country more secure. >> ba big part of the thank you. thank you for that. let's talk about it. >> he wants border security. he wants that wall. he won't compromise on that. >> that's good to hear. >> he'll resolve daca. but he also wants an end to chain migration. and visa lottery. you can't be more clear. we hear. >> are you worried if i say something it will be disruptive? >> it's your show. let me finish. when the president talks about immigration he talks about it at least four principles.
10:10 pm
he said it again and again. those who speak on his behalf. when the democrats hear the word immigration they hear daca. they hear dreamers. why is that? >> this is the man who talked about immigration in one way and one way only. for the campaign. that these. >> we don't do that on cnn. you don't want to mention. >> he got elected by campaigning on immigration. you have to listen to yourself. >> he won. border security. >> he said i'll build the wall these are monsters coming in here. bad people. murders and rapists. >> are you okay with the drugs coming into the country? you have three kids i have four. are you okay with that? >> that's what he said. i can talk about drug policy all day and poke so many huge holes in the idea that a wall will make a big difference in the drug trafficking. they're coming in tunnel and aircraft. in cargo ships.
10:11 pm
more than anywhere else. you want to talk about the death? they matter. we're talking about the rational for the supply. which you're dead wrong about and using to advance a narrative that if you put up a wall everything is fine. and hold on -- >> today was a big loss. a kick in the gut. we traded in the russia graphic for the shut down graphic. that's done. >> point by point. the president campaigned on fear about immigrants and a bill wall. you say he's never changed on the wall and won't. that's good to know. that's not what john kelly says. that's not what his surrogates say. different allies in congress say he always meant the wall as a metaphor. you said on the show last time he met with experts and knows rivering are involved and geographic concerns like he never looked at a map before. >> that's what you're saying. >> that's what you said. absolutely not. i'll let it go.
10:12 pm

report? reporting the president trump has attorney general jeff sessions pressuring fbi director christopher wray to fire his deputy director. report says that the pressure led to director wray to threaten to resign. let's take this one oun one with sexu swalwell. do you know anything about this? >> just hearing about it. congratulations on the new show. i serve on the house judiciary committee. that's where sessions should be next week. as soon as we get back in session in the house. because there's a lot to answer for if this indeed is true. one, attorney general sessions is supposed to be rekcused from the russia investigation.
10:50 pm
let's look at it from their perspective. the president has the ability to anybody he wants. this gets to the tricky ground of motive and all the legal arguments that spin out about it and when can the president do it and whynot. even though sessions is recused, is still in charge of his staff. and mccabe son the staff. so wouldn't he be within his right to say i want this guy gone? the reason is irrelevant? >> chris, i would say if the president had not already stepped in and fired james comey for admittedly his role in the russia investigation, i would give the president that latitude. but this president has shown a willingness to involve himself in investigations of his administration. and so i think right now allowing him to go any further on this is very dangerous. and it really i think threatens the independence of the department of justice. >> all right. let's see what sessions says about it. if you can get him before the committee, that will be

interesting to cover. are you happy with the deal the democrats made, this deal to make a deal on the basis of a promise of good intentions by mitch mcconnell? >> well, i voted no, chris. even if we solved the dreamer issue, and we must solve that, there is still i think this bigger issue which is we are running the government three weeks at a time. i have student councils in my district that have better budgets than what we have seen. the military leaders have told us one of the greatest -- >> why did you do it? i get it. why did your party go along with it then? >> i believe that they genuinely do want to bring fate for these dreamers, a fate that includes staying in the united states. >> wouldn't the best way to do that, using the only leverage they have which are the votes needed to pass the cr in the senate? once they gave up that, yes, it's only three weeks. but didn't they give up the only leverage they had? >> that leverage will be back in three weeks. and if mitch mcconnell breaks

his word, i think the public sentiment will be pretty harsh. so they have three weeks to come up. >> mcconnell ceep h word, congressman big, the vote mace not be there. >> the votes may not be there and let's say the votes are there and then it goes to the house. no companion promise there. and it's much tougher footing for the dreamer, as you well know. >> that's right. we were given no assurances by paul ryan. and truly, chris, i do not believe donald trump will sign the dream act. we saw who he was. his best day was the tuesday when he had a bipartisan group in front of him. >> bill of love. >> he said bring to it me, i'll sign it. two days later we seau uaw who really was. he was influenced by the outside voices. i'm afraid we're going to have to change the white house if we're truly going to get action. >> what about your leadership? who are they influenced by to go along with this? >> certainly the leadership in the house we stood firmly together. and i believe chuck schumer, he has three weeks now to put that deal together.

but it's going to come back to the house, chris. i think we're going to see how w.h.o. paul ryan really is, if he is going to bring this up for a vote. i don't trust this president. he was awol, the businessman deal maker was awol for the three days the government was shut down. i don't know if he was unwilling or incompetent, but he certainly was not there making a deal. >> congressman, what do you know of this nunes memo? have you looked at it? >> it is submitting a book review to the body of the house of representatives on a book that almost none of the members have read there is classified materials that it comments on that only two of the members in the committee have read. >> is the book classified? >> yes. highly classified, chris. the committee members would like to read it, and we're not even able. to that's the problem. so it sends out to the body i believe it's a poisoning of facts that i know are not true in this memo. and it's really an effort, as bob mueller and his team continue to make ogress, i think, to get ahead of wha i
