than bias, at the highest levels of the fbi. and secret society, we have an informant talking about a group holding secret meetings off-site. >> text message seems to be common about secret society was in gist. do you agree it appears to be in gist? >> real possibility. >> i mean, he looked like a fool. you would really think in the wake of something like that, you might take a week or two and try to develop a strategy for what makes the most sense. how do you not go off half cocked about some of these allegations? but, no, he's come back for more. and i think this is such a fishing expedition. it's a witch hunt. we learned last night that peter strzok, the agent at the heart of this texting scandal, was in fact the guy who wrote the letter arguing to reopen the hillary clinton email investigation when they found those new, what they thought were new, they were old emails on the computer.

and erin, i'm getting to the point i don't know why democrats aren't asking for more texts to it be released. what about texts between rudy said he knew something coming down the pike, friends in the bureau, leaking. let's see the texts with rudy. >> two questions. is this a can of worms that should be opened? because people in the fbi they all have personal bias, most people do. maybe professional bias on both sides. but if you are going to i want this 16, is this worth it? >> yeah, look, big general point, any investigation of this nature of a president of the united states inherently becomes political and becomes part of a partisan fight. i'm old enough to remember the 1990s when ken star started his investigation into bill clinton as widely respected legal professional. ended it in the eyes of clinton

sex crazed pervert. so not unusual you would have parties on differing sides of investigation of this nature. and, two, there are legitimate questions about the fbi investigation into hillary clinton which seems as far as i can tell, to have been determined to give her a clean bill of health legally, and legally and determined not to recommend an indictment. and a special counsel investigation. look, there are questions like did the ig of the department of justice who is not a partisan republican which i'm aware of, is investigating how the fbi handled the clinton case, especially andrew mccabe. if your wife a getting donations from a clinton ally, you should recuse yourself, and he didn't until right until to the end. if your wife is getting money from the political operation

associated with the person you're supposed to be investigating, of course it does. >> he disclosed it at every step of the way. we've got a paper trail. i want to go back to what you said about ken starr, though. first of all i think the clinton investigation was trumped up. it was about sex, we never should have gone there. we're going to disagree about that. but ken starr actually was a conservative republican. robert mueller was a republican. mccabe voted republican. rod rosenstein now, we don't know if he's republican but he was appointed by donald trump himself. jim comey, republican. this whole group of people they're republicans investigating -- >> ken starr every step of the way gets information from the department of justice. >> i want to talk about something the president said today. >> we could go on about the

'90s. >> the president today was saying something that was not true. that's why i don't call it breaking news, but he was saying something about orrin hatch. and he said orrin hatch said he was the greatest president in american history. and i want to play the president here for a second. >> orrin, i love listening to him speak. he said once i am the single greatest president in his lifetime. and he once said i'm the greatest president in the history of our country, and i said does that include clinton and washington, and he said yes, and i said i love this guy. and it was detailed. he said this and this and orrin hatch, and he said no i didn't say that at all. his aide said senator hatch said he would like to work with the president. >> if you look at that original orrin hatch statement which was at the white house at a big

ceremony, in itself it was over the top. most people would just be pleased to have a long-standing senator say i'm going to make you the best president ever, but with president trump he goes back to his nature as a real estate developer in new york who thought if he wasn't exaggerating everything, it wasn't good. >> i mean to throw in the details about lincoln and washington. >> right, the exchange. i said this and -- >> it is just the instinct of a liar, a man who going back to real estate lied about how much money he made, stiffed the subcontractors who worked with him in the tri-state area, lied about why he couldn't release his tax returns, said he would and then he wouldn't. lied about that. i mean lied about the "access hollywood" tape even though first he admitted and then he said, wait, i'm going to lie because i can get away with it.

duck. jeanne moos, cnn, new york. >> thanks so much for joining us. you can watch the show anytime. go to cnn go, and we'll see you back here tomorrow night, and we'll see if we have that memo. it could be out a few hours from now in the early morning hours. good evening. with the president about to speak with a public function about to be held, we begin tonight with the drama over the nunes memo. keeping them honest, it is in many ways a phony drama. it is a forgone conclusion. it is and always has been. we should point out the document in question is not some bipartisan of fact by the partisan committee, it appears it will be something of a press release. something let out under the intelligence committee membership, chaired of course by congressman devin nunes.
