10:00 pm
we do begin this hour with breaking news. a spokesman for the israel defense forces say more than 20 rockets were filed from syria believed to be fired by iranian face forces. the day after president trump announced the united states would leave the iran nuclear deal. it was to say the least a controversial decision with some concerns being it could light a fuse in the middle east. the hope tonight is that the fuse has not been lit. oren liebermann joins from us the golan heights. orin, resign what's happening now, what are you learning? >> anderson, over the course of the last couple of hours here in the golan heights overlook syria
10:01 pm
behind me we have seen dozens of rockets fired from syria into israeli territories and interceptions from the iron dome army testifies system on top of that syrian and i aircraft firing at what appears to be israel surface to surface missiles we have heard artillary fire from israel fighting towards syria. all of that is on top. what you pointed out shortly after midnight local time there was a report from the israel defense force that is 20 rockets were fired from syria into israel. so the israeli military says they are responding. we have seen part of the response. but the response is expected to continue. and we expect more information on what that response was, who the target was, although, john as you pointed out israel says it was the elite division of erinen revolutionary guard in stationed in syria. >> what evidence do they have that it was the quds force. >> they haven't said
10:02 pm
specifically what intelligence leads them to believe it was the iranian revolutionary forward force firing the missiles. but we know yesterday the israel military detected irregular iranian activity in syria. we know that israel has been expecting some sort of iranian response over the last few weeks and perhaps even months. that's because there have been a number of strikes in syria targeting iranian positions that syria and and iran blamed and israel. israel expected a opinions. it believes this is part of that the response. they've been high alert opened up bomb shelters throughout the golan heights. at this point the israel military has not instructed people to go in the shelters. i'm not sure about the freedom of movement. but do you have any information about casualties or damage? >> so far in this information is a few hours old we are wait be for the update but the israel says there is light damage here and no information on any casualties whether injured or killed on this side. we have heard from the syrian military or rather syrian state media saying they have
10:03 pm
intercepted israel missiles fired at israel. the information is limited on both sides. but we have seen first hand the firing back and forth whether rockets from syria into israel or artillery fire back the other way. john it's worth pointing out that israel and iran have danced closer to each other, moved closer to each towards direct confrontation over weeks and months given what we have seen tonight this is at least part of that first direct confrontation between israel and iran. if it is indeed the quds force firing the rockets. >> orin please stay safe. joining me knew is adam kensinger of illinois a member of the house foreign affairs committee. this is a development over the last few hours right now. the increasing conflict in the region between, you know iranian forces it appears and israel as well. do you believe that if it was the quds gears it was a direct response to the u.s. pulling out of israel.
10:04 pm
>> if they got in israel a long time. iran has been building a land bridge in syria frankly before president trump. this is iran's attempt to continue to antagonize israel as they said to wipe israel off the map atom point you have to take them seriously. the israelis as we would if something is happening on our border are taking them seriously. they have taken measured responses and limited responses. but if tonight there were actual 20 rockets fired from iranian direct command elements this is a major escalation. i frankly would expect that the -- that the israelis will begin clearing the decks of israeli targets in syria probably soon. >> one of the concerns about the united states pulling out of the iran deal, the nuclear deal as it did as we said it would light a fuse in a region already combustible now. do you have concerns it has shaken up the region more.
10:05 pm
>> no, i mean again this was announced a few days ago. even if people suspect to do iran didn't determine they were getting involved in syria because we might pull out of the iran deal. frankly they got the resources from the iran deal to go into the seer syria. people can disagree on the decision injury it was the right one. because he has refilled the sanction quivers to negotiate a deal that goes beyond the nuclear agreement and includes what they're doing in syria. the iranian regime with the russians and especially with bashar al assad are responsible for 500,000 dead syrians, 50,000 of which are children. and they have a lot of blood on their hands. >> one of the things bore insis johnson the foreign secretary for the uk says he has seen no plan b. i know you're supportive of the move but you want to see a comprehensive strategy from the trump administration. have you seen that strategy. >> i've had discussion was state department. the in nirk initial part of the strategy is reinstating
10:06 pm
sanctions. not snapping them back tomorrow. they're working with the allies to understand the investments they have in iran to extricate themselves from. what the sanctions reimposed mean and we can compel iran back to the table and let's get a deal. the only reason we're concerned about iran's nuclears is because the broader behavior. america is a powerful country. we sometimes underestimate the power that our economy and our leadership has. while diplomacy is is an art form it's not science. this is the right thing to begin to raney in the broader bare. because there may have been a temporary freeze on iran's nuclear behavior but look at syria and they're on the border of israel today. and that's unacceptable. >> israel says they are launching mitchells. in the golan heights. you suggested israel might respond forcibly over the next few days. what do you think the u.s. role
10:07 pm
should be over the next few days. >> i think we'll back up our ally israel. i don't think we're necessarily going to join in the strikes. but we'll make sure to defendant the territorial integrate of israel. if iran escalates the u.s. may be involved. but if you lived in israel and you had 150,000 hezbollah rockets pointed at you and the people in hezbollah and iran they want to wipe you off the map you'd be ludicrous to not take that seriously. i think the prime minister has taken measure the responses and today if iran decided to fire 20 rockets into the golan heights i expected there is massive retaliation. >> one more foreign policy question wail you have here. of course the three americans on the way home now the one detained in north korea should land in the united states in the next few hours. if you're north korea, and you're looking ahead to this summit between the presidents and you see what the united states did with the iran deal, would you approach these
10:08 pm
negotiations differently? would you have concerns or hesitate about putting your faith in the united states? >> i would have concerns because i know the deal i struck would have to be iron clad and would lead to me never having nuclear weapons in north korea. i think this us saying this a flawed mental. he was scoldland by the chinese counterparts and saying you're not have nukes again. if he thought he could build a loop hole with the president he is sorely mistaken. that will send that message. >> adam kensinger of illinois thank you for being us us. >> we're are getting new information about the money trail of michael cohen according multiple people familiar with conduct after the election. the president's personal attorney aggressively pitched himself to clients and landed lucrative consulting dells. and payments to the shell company after the election. emjay lee joins us with more about that and you're learning more about how he would pitch himself and offer access to president trump.
10:09 pm
>> we have known michael cohen as being donald trump's lawyer but tonight we see the different picture of michael cohen ee emerge. the man who was the attorney to the president-elect and acted quickly to try to capitalize on that. we're told cohen went around pitching himself to companies and trying to land the lucrative consulting deals. and what he proposed was access to president trump. remember, cohen has been trump's lawyer many years. he was known as trump's right-hand man and fixer. what he did was remind the companies that he is very close to his boss that he could help the firms navigate the new white house. so i just want to give you one example of what this would have looked like after the election we are told cohen approached a pharmaceutical company called novartis and land add one-year deal with them promising them access to the white house on things related to health care policy. now the interesting twist here though is that apparently novartis and cohen had a initial meeting and the company realized actually cohen can't help us on health care policy.
10:10 pm
however they paid him for the month for a year for a total of $$1.2 million. >> for one meeting. has mienl cohen or the white house responded to this story at all. >> michael cohen stayed silent about this. the white house doesn't want to touch it either. we saw white house press secretary sarah sanders asked about the payments to cohen multiple times today. and she said repeatedly that reporters should relay the questions to trump's outside counsel. she was asked specifically about whether cohen is qualified to advise corporations on the president. i thought her response was telling. she said i'm not ge into anybody els qualifications. essentially this is for the companies to decide not her. the white house is definitely not going out of its way to defend cohen. even though this is a man who has said he would take a bullet for donald trump and of course the huge question now is whether
10:11 pm
cohen is going to maintain that loyalty to his boss. we know he is under tremendous pressure right now john as he confronts the consequences of criminal investigation. >> we foe robert mueller and his team were asking about the deals as far back as last november and december. thanks for being with us. coming up we follow the michael cohen money trail as a firm that made payments tries to distance itself from a russian oligarch which has russian ties. now reporting on that when we come back. this is bill's yard. and bill has a "no-weeds, not in my yard" policy. but with scotts turf builder weed & feed, bill has nothing to worry about. it kills weeds and greens grass, guaranteed. this is a scotts yard.

but on the iranian deal, there are four big decisions that the president has made that have directly spit in the eye of our long-term friends and allies, pulling out of paris climate change. pulling out of the transpacific inventory. the economic tariffs and then iran. that's a historic change and we're moving toward a different order. maybe a disorder from anything we have known before. that's real. we don't know what's causing the rockets tonight. >> we don't foe again the quds has been in syria for some time. iran likely to be the impetus for the launch. doctor if i can focus on the detainees landed in anchorage alaska and land in d.c. if a few hours. what do you think this means for the upcome summit taking place in singapore between trump and kim jong un. >> back to negotiation between pyongyang and washington are
10:43 pm
going well because north koreans -- this is a good will gesture. they are looking for a bigger prize when kim jong un is sitting down with president trump. i think a grand bargain is what north korea is looking for now. this is a good will gesture. they shouldn't have kept the americans in the first place. so i don't think it's a big deal for them to do so. and so they're trying to lay the groundwork for a good meeting. >> not a major concession. kim jong un has a strategy. he knows what he is doing. in the last few months we have seen his actions he is smart and astute and he is looking for a strategy. he is looking for something bigger out of washington when he has the meeting with president trump. >> i want to read you something that secretary pompeo said in a toast last night. he said for decades we have been adversaries now we are hopeful we can work together to resolve the conflict. take away the threats to the country and make your country have all the opportunities your people richly deserve.
10:44 pm
that's pretty historic for a u.s. secretary of state to be standing in north korea making that toast. to the north korean leader. >> it feels a little premature to me. i think that of course it's wonderful that these people have been able to be returned to the united states. i think we should also remember that there are four americans in iran right now who are probably in worse situation because of the president pulling out of the iran deal. so you know, in balance we still have obviously problems with hostages. but i think that you have to remember that north korea has been will go for a meeting like this for a long time. we don't know the agreements that were made to get the peegt. we tone know what's happening at the meeting. the worst case scenario is that they use it to make themselves look for legitimate on the world stanl and we don't get what we want. we have to wait and see what happens. it's not like they were never willing to sit down before. it's just the united states didn't feel like they could sit done yet.
10:45 pm
>> rob. >> well the americans who were in iran have been detainted a while why did obama sign a deal and not make them come home. >> that's a fair criticism. >> at least the president. >> there were u.s. hostages who did come back at that time. >> not all of them. >> they'll give them what they gave them everyone should have come become. if this was a great deal president obama would have sent it to the senate for ratification. i remember my senator here in new york chuck schumer screaming and yelling about how bad a deal this was. and he was right. one time i ever agreed with chuck schumer. >> paul what we see whether you like it or not right now, is president trump driving the world agenda. i mean he is forcing events on this world stage. >> he is. and any american president can. back to dr. terry's president. kim jong un has a strategy i think she is right. i want my president to have a strategy. i'm terribly worried for all of his bufrt about what a great negotiator he is he is being horn swagled here.
10:46 pm
>> these men should have never been held. and so kim gives them become. well that's fine. he is making a big thing and the president is very happy. he is going to stop testing. the site where he tests is a mountain collapsing from all the previous tests. he is not giving anything. and the president think he is getting a lot. >> no i want to get dr. ter's take with the ph.d.. i believe horn swagled is an accurate term? is the united states getting horn swagled. >> that's remaining to be even. the administration is clear eyed maybe not president trump but i think bolton and pompeo are clear eyed. but what president trump has done by pulling out of the iran deal he sets himself a high bar. we see what he accomplish was north korea because he just basically said to the world and to americans that deal was not good enough. whatever deal he makes with kim jong un better be tough completely irreversible.

gina haspel faced some tough questioning before the senate intelligence committee today on the cia's use of torture in her bid to become the new director of the agency. she told committee members she would not sanction it. >> i would not allow cia to undertake activity that i thought was immoral, even if it was technically legal. i would absolutely not permit it. >> idaho republican senator jim rich was one of the committee members who questioned haspel. i spoke with him a little earlier. senator rich, you know gina haspel for ten years. you met with her in the field. why do you think she is

qualified to run the cia? >> well, this is a woman who has dedicated her life to doing this. she has been over 30 years with the cia. she started as a covert agent right at the bottom, worked her way all the way up. worked in the operation side of the agency, has been in the management side of the agency. she knows it backwards, forwards. she has been in through some of the tough times. look, we on the intelligence committee, we hear a lot of things every day to make us not sleep very well at night. with her as head of the agency, i'll sleep better at night. >> so many of your democratic colleagues did raise concerns today about her involvement in the enhanced interrogation program. i know you made it clear you do support her no matter what, but can you at least understand why your colleagues have these concerns? >> well, sure. they hate anything that donald trump does in this town. >> well, in this case, senator -- >> wait, wait, wait. >> this happened during the bush administration. this has to do with things that happened 15 years ago. this doesn't really have
10:53 pm
anything specifically to do with the current president. >> if i can finish to answer the question. >> go ahead. >> the people in this town, many of them hate trump so bad that no matter who he nominates, they're going to raise anything they can. you just hit the nail on the head, and that is that the interrogation had nothing to do with her. they're trying to get her to answer for this one. she was not involved in that. so no, i don't understand in response directly to your question. i don't understand they're raising that. this is a woman who is incredibly qualified to do this. she will be a great head of this agency. i'm looking forward to seeing her confirmed. like i said, i'll sleep better tonight. >> she was involved at one of these black sites in thailand that was going on. this was a site she was running. she oversaw the destruction of some videotapes of interrogations. again, i'm just stating that for the fax here. and that's what the questions are on.

for instance, senator kamala harris of california had this exchange with her today. let me just play that for you. >> it's a yes or no answer. do you believe the previous interrogation techniques were immoral? i'm not asking do you believe they were legal. i'm asking do you believe they were immoral? >> senator, i believe that cia did extraordinary work to prevent another attack on this country given the legal tools that we were authorized to use. >> please answer yes or no. do you believe in hindsight that those techniques were immoral? >> senator, what i believe sitting here today is that i support the higher moral standard we have decided to hold ourselves to. >> can you please answer the question. >> senator rich, you heard the exchange, then you hear it again. her answer or nonanswer to this specific question was that immoral, are you okay with the nonanswer? >> what i'm okay with is long discussions i have had with her. her view is exactly the same as mine, and that is that torture
