the other end. people are so incredibly excited. i think there's an extra measure of excitement because this is an anglo-american wedding. isn't that the point, that the monarchy will allow meghan markel what wallace simpson wasn't able to do. >> the church of england has modified and british attitudes have been modified. and in every appearance, she has been embraced, not only by the royal family but by the british people in the commonwealth. >> let's bring in our resident historian, kate. this family goes back 1,000 years. couple of generations.st a andeghan markle really epitomizes that, doesn't she? >> she does. she is moving the royal family

so many changes. when we look at the order of service for this morning, that just shows the changes. we have a gospel choir singing. "stand by me" is being sung. they're leaving to etta james. really big changes. the bishop is going to stir us up with his address. this is the future of the royal family. they're not going to be king and queen, but they're going to be the future of british representatives. it's outward looking and modern and really how britain is a modern country. it's exciting to see the change. >> i was speaking with someone that was with meghan, very much looking forward to her big day. i asked her about the element of walking down the aisle on her own, i was told she just wanted to do that. that's just the choice she made. she wasn't making a big point

about feminism or standing up to the british monarchy. but do you think the symbolism of that moment will speak to history? >> oh, max, i think the symbolism of that moment is going to be talked about. there's going to be books about it in the future. it's incredibly symbolic. even though queen victoria, she walked two of her children down the aisle because she thought no one was better than the queen, it's really the convention that the man give the bride away, the father. we've seen this custom. and meghan was saying, she wants something completely different, walk herself halfway up the aisle and give herself to harry. and that will have people say, wh didn't i do that. let's change the customs and that part of the wedding ceremony will be over in the future. she is a trend setter and reflecting so much about our current thinking about women in

the future. and what is significant is that harry is having a ring. most royal men don't wear rings. prince philip, prince charles. prince william doesn't wear a ring. but harry and meghan is going to wear a ring. >> we're expecting the first set of announcements within the hour. the rings will be part of that. where the rings come from, this is a nugget of royal gold. >> it's welsh gold. it began with the wedding of king george vi, the duke of york and elizabeth. that's when the tradition began. >> wedding rings traditionally come out of one lump of gold. >> they do. >> do you expect that to be the case today? >> i do. that would be very much of traditional part of it. it's interesting they are going to exchange rings. he is going to wear a ring.

with william and kate, only kate was wearing the wedding ring. it's not as common place in britain for the husband to wear a ring. and i know prince charles wears his wedding ring on his little finger along with his ring. the fact they're exchanging rings is, i think, indicative. >> we're going to talk about the dress. that's not my expert subject. not jason's, either. but jason is the expert on the crowds. jason, you've flown in from the united states. what are you making of the british way? >> you know, i'm really taken aback by the warmth you keep hearing. we're along the long walk here

where thousands have started to gather this morning. throughout the week i've been here, you hear over and over, this connection that people feel when you talk about prince harry. prince william, as well. now, meghan markle. max, i want to introduce you to two of my new friends. they have a great blanket from here. they're from wales. >> they're all from wales. pardon me. they brought their flags. the same t-shirts that say what? >> when harry met meghan, as opposed to sally. >> yes. >> we were talking a little bit before about this connection that so many of you seem to feel towards prince william, prince harry. you say a lot has to dh mother? >> i think so. she justro the barriers, really. we loved her. at the time, i think she was very much misunderstood by the royal family, but not by us. and i think the boys have carried on the work she did.

isha? >> max foster, good morning, my friend. what a remarkable day. what a beautiful day in windsor. let me set the scene for you. the crowds below me are filling up the streets of windsor. and the atmosphere is amazing. what am i looking forward to? the dress and the jewels and the tiara. all that good stuff, max. i cannot wait to see meghan markel to see how she looks on this big day. how resplendent she will look in that dress. we still don't know the creator of that dress. there's so many unanswered questions and so many people in the spotlight. not just meghan, but the royals, the wedding guests, all of them to be discussed. i want to talk about the fashion that we're expecting to be displayed in the hours ahead. and also, some of the misses we may be seeing. heather cox and jessica morgan are co-authors of "the royal we"

to talk about the day ahead. ladies, welcome. let me start with what we know about meghan's dress. jessica, to you first. >> we don't know much of anything. i think we can safely bet it will be a british designer. other than that, it's a big question mark. obviously, this is what we're superexcited to see within hours. >> heather, what are your expectations for the dress? zblin a given all we know of meghan markle and her fashion sense, what do we expect to see her in? going traditional? are w gng modern? are we going fairy tale? at doeyour gut say to you? >> my gut says it will be a combination of modern and fairy tale. maybe that doesn't sound logic c al. you really only get one crack at a royal wedding in your

lifetime. you have to lean into that moment. and that picture will be following you in every story written about you for the rest of your life. you want it to have impact. you want it to be timeless. you want that moment to last. i think she will go something mildly princessy but with a few modern touches. >> i want to talk about jewelry and i want to talk about the tiara. what are the questions that a lot of people are dealing with or contemplating, is whether she will wear the spencer family tiara. that would be the tiara worn by princess diana. or whether she will wear one lent to her by the queen. what do you think? what would either signify? >> i was saying to heather, i

would be surprised that she wore the spencer tiara. i think it would be a beautiful way to work diana into the ceremony. my bet, if i were a betting woman and i am, she will beloaned one from the queen. sometimes the queen buys one. but i think she will end up with a beautiful loaner. >> that would be a dream. yeah. i don't know. >> okay. we know there will be the tiara. the dress will be fantastic. we expect meghan to get it right. let's ask about the mrs. what are your concerns? do you think we'll see a fashion faux pas? we saw that like princess beatrice's hat. do you think we will see something like that again? >> yes. is it wrong to say i sort of hope so because sometimes that's more fun. princess beatrice might be more

that glorious scene. this is the long walk to windsor castle. some crowds are coming down here. there will be big screens. all of the front row seats have been taken um, i'm afraid to tell you. but there's still many hundreds of people pouring in because this is where the carriage procession will return to the castle after the wedding. welcome back to the special countdown to the royal wedding. coming up, we'll have our first look at the hotel where meghan is staying and where she will leave in a couple hours' time. and step into the spotlight, isha. >> yes, max. wedding watchers have been camped out for hours and even days, just below me, just beneath me here. the streets are slowly filling up with well-wishers.

they're all here to wish this couple a wonderful start to their wedding. wishing they had an invitation. and soon, we'll see the first guests as they begin to arrive. it is all so very exciting, max. >> and truly british, as well. with this amazing american twist because you see the flags there, the british bunting. a lot of american bunting, as well, interspersed. thersng to be a lot of american elements reflected in the service, i'm tol byhe palace, as well. something very exciting to look forward to. clarissa ward is down there, st. george's chapel. it's true, isn't it, that meghan markel is putting her stamp on this truly royal moment. >> absolutely, max. this is going to have all of the beauty and the tradition that so many royal weddings have had over the decades and over, indeed, the centuries. but it will have a distinctly modern flavor. we're privileged to have a front

row seat. this is going to take place in st. george's chapel just behind me. i'm going to sand out of the way and talk you through the geograp geography. this area here will be filled with about 1,200 members of the public who meghan and harry have elected to invite to their special day. these are members of the royal household, and also people that are notably strong in their communities that meghan and harry invited. we'll see the arrivals of the guests who will be going inside the chapel. the 600 guests. they will be going through the arch there, if you see that beautiful, fully floral arch. most guests will enter there. the royals will enter in an entrance that is one behind that. it's a little secluded and cut off. you can't see it well with a camera. and prince william and prince harry will come walking down the hill. you see the hill behind me. they will come walking down from

the top of the castle. they will go through this door yard to my right, into the horseshoe cloister. there will be about 200 members of their favorite charities and charity workers that will be there. they will go in the west steps. meghan markel will arrive via the west steps. she will have to climb, max, 20 steps. it will benteresting to see how high her heels are, before going into the xhuchurch. she will walk on her own and then be escorted by prince charles to prince harry. >> not only is she clambering up 20 steps, but she's doing so with ten children, the youngest of which is just 2. madness. >> that's going to be a feat in and of itself, to keep all of the children, especially the 2-year-old, in line. we look to see the pictures and

see how they do with all of the eyes and the eyes of the world on them. it will be an amazing moment. she's stepping into a whel nole chapter of her life. and the world is waiting as we inch closer to that moment when she arrives at st. george's chapel. she's american. she is not aristocracy. but she made a name for herself in hollywood on that show, "suits," the one she's best known for. that role as an attorney, rachel crane. meghan markel is also known for being biracial and she's been married once before. lots to talk about, how different she is. joining me now, kate williams and heather cox and jessica morgan, co-authors of the book "the royal we." thank you for being with us on this glorious day. kate williams, i want to start with you. good morning. this issue of meghan's journey down the aisle. the fact that she will be going

much of the way on her own before prince charles steps forward and he falls back and she makes the rest of the journey on her own to prince harry. talk to me about that and the significance and what it says about meghan. >> it's so significant. it will be talked about in the future. it's a big moment. she's going up the steps on her own, meetingbridesmaids and the page boys. and will move forward on her own. that's so significant. often in the wedding ceremony, we have the bride arriving with her father like a property. and now, meghan is giving herself away. prince charles is escorting her but she's giving herself away. and that is really so important, so kig cant. and it's meaningful. it does say a lot. it will change wedding traditions in the future. it's very meaningful how meghan

sees her role in the world family. she's an outspoken woman. an independent woman. she's a completely new type of princess. >> she certainly is. jessica, to you, on that matter of the family she's marrying into. this is a family steeped in tradition. they have a set way of doing things. we see from the outset, meghan is changing the way she conducts herself, the way she intends to get married. what do you expect to be the impact of meghan markel on this royal family? >> i think it's something that will play out over the next 50 years that she's part of the family. i don't think we want to put a huge amount of pressure on her right off the bat to change everything. she's the newest member of the family. i think we hope it's going to bring an openness, an american warmth to it. there's been reports that she

is, as she says, a hugger. she is hugging people on staff at the palace. you know, i think that she may well bring, in addition to being a smart woman, who is incredibly well-educated and philanropi i think she will bng a warmth to the royal family. >> yeah. heather, the fact that meghan is biracial is something that's been discussed a great deal in the u.s., maybe than more here in the united kingdom. but race is a factor in all of this, that's the world we live in. what does that mean to you in terms of having a biracial member of the royal family? what does that mean for british society as a whole? >> i think just the world as a whole right now is moving toward more of a sense of inclusion, as it should. and this is a really excellent high-profile example for that movement, for just proving to

people it's not what you look like but who you are. we should see all races getting opportunities and positions in society. we talked to people in windsor from connecticut, texas and california. all races and all of them felt a massive sense of pride. one woman from houston in particular, i, as a black woman, felt marginalized as a kid. and this is incredibly significant to me. this is something i can show my children and say, this could be you someday. i can't speak for her. but when she spoke to me, that's what was this moment really meant for her. and i think multiply that by millions and that's what you're going to get. that's what this is. >> kate williams, back to you and to stay with the issue of meghan's heritage, her biracial heritage, you're a historian. put this in context here and how really monumental it is for the

royal family itself. do you see challenges associated with her being biracial and being part of this family? >> it is monumental. it's so meaningful. privy to this, prior to this, u think o the amount of times harry's future brides and they were always aristocrats. they were british aristocrats who were all-white. harry has chosen a biracial woman, a feminist, an intellectual self-made women. she is transforming for the royal family. she's changing the royal family. look at what she's done in terms of her engagements. going to brixton and talking to young people there. the wedding service has a lot of overtones about black culture. we have the bishop curry here, etta james, the gospel choir. so exciting to see of the

culture of people of color. she's going to transform in the future, there are going to be difficulties because the royal family is very traditional. the most difficult thing for meghan is the fact that royal brides are not supposed to speak out that much. they really are supposed to be the queen is politic comply neutral. beyond that, you're not supposed to talk about questions of poverty or inequality, questions that are close to meghan's heart. we're going to hear about racism, sexism, poverty and inequality. that's something that she feels so important to her. and i think she is really going to shake things up and change them for the better. to her, we're going to see the royal family's popularity go shooting up. >> yeah. they have a relaunch about the royal family. kate williams, heather cox, and jessica morgan, my thanks to all three of you. great conversation. thank you. >> thank you.

great britain the atmosphere. >> i'm on eton bridge. there's an area here where a lot of the guests involved in charts that prince harry and meghan wanted to include, inside the castle walls, will be coming this way. everyone looks great in their hats and flags. we got a couple papers this morning. weddy or not, here she comes. i'm getting harried in the morning is the headline du jour. and welcome to the family. this is a special moment for this american princess and her mom, who were last night arriving and spending time together. you know, this is one of the stories that we keep talking about the word fairy tale with meghan markle. at the same time, she's quite the feminist. she's outspoken. she discussed things like the #metoo movement in america. she talked about since she was a kid, being a humanitari, a

feminist, working t chae the world. these are the things that bonded her to prince harry. while there's a beautiful fairy tale element and a princess thing happening today, there's a moment of modernism, as this young woman, this american woman, you know, what's life going to be like for her now that she can't necessarily sak about politics? she can't be too much of an activist. we'll see how she adapts and shhow she changes. the vibe on the bridge is a lot of excitement. we're looking forward to watching everyone come over and fill up the castle walls. >> absolutely. hillary, obviously, the couple said they want the public as involved as possible. but we're also going to get high-profile guests, as well, won't we? who are you looking for? >> what's interesting the who not to look for. there's no european royals whatsoever. and the queen was influential in

letting harry choose who he wants to have there. when prince william was getting married, he said, i don't know anybody on the list. and the queen said rip it up. if you recall, we had the butcher from berkshire who was at their wedding. i think that's going to be important and to look for is who isn't there, too. this is a wedding of their closest friends and family. we have a lot of "suits" stars. from the tv series she was filming in toronto. i think you will see american celebrities. it's important to look at the wedding party. there isn't going to be a matron of honor. some of meghan markel's dear friends will be taking care of those children because there will be six little girls and four littleboys princess charlotte is going t steal the show and prince george. they are the children of prince william and kate middleton.

so, i think that we'll look for the children and i think we'll see the "suits" stars. i think elton john will be there. there's a touch of looking back to princess diana. he sang at her funeral and was close friends with her. he's remained close and will be there with his husband, david. you'll see him as a big part and side by them. also very importantly, it's princess diana's sister, jane fellows. she will be reading. the last time we heard her voice was at princess diana's funeral. that will be a touch of sadness, but this is a joyous day. >> diana looms large, doesn't she, today, hillary? >> yes. >> as america watches today, what are they hooked into here? >> one thing i can tell you, we have monsoon season in washington and sunny in england. this is a feel-good story. there's so much going on right now that's so politicized,

regardless of anybody's politics. there's so many things to look at that's scary or negative. it's actually sad there was a shooting in texas. there's a lot of sadness in our nation at the moment. this is escapism. but to look at that is joyous, a new beginning. i think americans are fascinated with the longevity and the history. we chose not to have a royal family in the united states. but when you look at the british royal family, over 1,000 years. many people watching are fascinated by the institution that's weathered political differences. it's weathered different storms. even in the world wars. it's weathered, you know, the queen married prince philip at the time when married a greek was not looked at in the '40s. i think americans say, look, there are a family and a firm.

the royal family is called a firm, of the future. that's a big fascination. where are we going from here? and americans can feel part of it with an american in the wedding party. >> absolutely. she will define things from here. >> she will. >> thank you, both of you. we will be with you throughout the day. we're just hours away from meghan's big moment. we have all eyes currently on cliveden house for you because this is where she's staying. this is when she arrived yesterday. what we're looking for is when she leaves. we want a glimpse. we have cameras everywhere. we have reporters everywhere. if there's a glimpse to be had, through the car window, you're going to see it here. once there was an organism so small

is just behind me where i am here enwindsor. they are so excited. it's hard to put into words, the feeling, the energy, the electricity here in windsor. as i look down i can see people with blankets, and they've got their deck chairs and lots and lots of flags. and the bride herself, she is waking up at the hotel, an american woman about to embark on a very british tale. all eyes, all interest is directed right where you are. what are you hearing is happening in that hotel behind you? >> reporter: bewell, isha, i cannot think of a better destination than this fairy tail to begin, it's a 17th century

property, a sprawling estate. you can have a look at this beautiful house. it's actually remodeled by the same person, charles barry, who designed the house that downtown abbey was set at. also the same man that designed the houses of parliament, too in the u.k. so it is gorgeous, offers a luxury spa which i'm sure meghan and her mother have been enjoying. it has suites that ranges from about $1,000,to $2,000 per night. you were just talk about isha what i've been seein all week, this is very peaceful place and just the kind of place the bride will want to be preparing, put the final touches on her look, obviously getting her asse accessories together, doing her hair and make-up, and that dress

together at patriotic events. the next hour we're going to start getting updates from the palace, details about the ring, possibly the tiara. we're also going to get our first glimpse of meghan markle hopefully as she leaves clifton house. the crowds are gathering. the british and american flags are waving. the final touches put in place here in windsor, england as the

modern monarchy puts their stamp. >> we're just hours away from the wedding of prince harry and meghan markle. what a day. there's been such a build up to this moment. but before that in less than an hour the first guest will enter the grounds at windsor castle. nearly 1,200 members of the public were especiallynvited to watch. and a big question is how they're reshaping the monarchy. this is such a remarkable moment for this family. >> it really is. and meghan markle has chosen to walk down most of the aisle herself as well. they say she's not making a feminist point per se, she's just doing it the way she likes to do things. she is a feminist, so it is a feminist moment for many today. also using a modern set of

wedding vows. and we're also learning more about the guest list. tennis superstar serena williams has just confirmed she will be attending the wedding. now, cnn had all over this for you from the crowds to the procession route to the hotel. bringing all that excitement live only as cnn can. let's start, though, with kate bennett. she's with the goathering crowd and give us a look at the royal fans that are particular to the u.k. >> reporter: as an american i've been pulled over by how patriotic and excited everyone is here. we're seeing those 1,200 people that got that special invitation

in the mail that said they could be inside the castle walls. these are people associated with many of the charities meghan and harry support. they're coming over the bridge nw. they've parked just beyond this bridge, and there's a l of people walking towards the castle. you know, we've seen people with picnic baskets and flags and wearing union jack suits and outfits, and it's really been quite a festive day. i wanted to show the cover of the sun this morning or i guess it was last night it came out. i'm gating harryed in the morning. i don't know if that's taking the best shot there, but a welcome to the family with meghan markle and her mother as they arrived in windsor yesterday, and they met with the

queen and had coffee with her or tee with her. i love meghan's mom is wearing a little gold stud ring in her nose and just ever bit the modern american woman. this yoga instructor a free spirit as meghan calls her. the two together facing today -- obviously the prince has a large extended family, so much tradition, other royals. there's a lot to take on here, and just mother and daughter together i think symbolizes really a lot for meghan. this is the woman who raised her primarily, her father can't be here today. but this mother and daughter facing a very new life, a modern american woman transferring her citizenship perhaps, transferring her work, her world to be with her new husband says a lot about what's going to happen today. back to you guys. >> we've got an aerial image

you get a real sense of the castle here. it's a town, essentially a fortres. harry is direct descendant of kings and queens ever since. the chapel is on the right. we're getting a rare glimpse on the left, though. that's the queens private quarters. in there she'll be preparing. this is her favorite castle. she rides the grounds pretty much on her pony every day. but look at the scale of that. it really is a fairy tale setting. isha, you're right there. >> just stunning. it is absolutely beautiful. we're right here, and max, for your viewers around the world i want to share something with you. you can see the castle just behind me, and you mightby able to make it out but we can very clearly hear classical music being piped out over the public

speakers here. and so the entire space has been filled this beautiful music. someone tells me it's a german love song, and it's just setting the scene, really, for this fairy tale. and the crowds have lined the procession route. they are here and waiting to see the newly weds when they leave the chapel which will happen just about 1:00 local time, and they'll go down castle hill onto high street. and when they make that journey they'll go on and see these sidewalks around crammed full of people. and another remarkable thing i want to tell you is they go down the sidewalks waiting underneath for these people to capture a glimpse of the new couple. and jason, one of the things i wanted to get from you, they are from all walks of life, all

ethnicities. it was such a mix. the excitement is electric. what's it like where you are? >> exactly the same. it's exactly what you just mentioned. you can walk through this crowd here and you can already see there are thousands of people who have have lined this pathway. you walk along and meet people from all different walks of life, all different countries. the very beautiful yellow with the cap here, germany. the north and south of germany. we also have britain over here as well. we have kentucky. we have south carolina. let me get some of you to weigh in starting with the united states. you have south carolina here. >> it's exactly where i wanted to be. i wanted to be part of the excitement, experience, see meghan and harry and just be around friends. >> these guys just met today. they didn't know each other.

met on the way here. you adopted the british or did the british adopt you? i notice you've got some cake here as well, too. this is what they've been eating. this is the royal celebration wedding cake and with the same ingredients as the real cake, lemon and elder flower, breakfast. >> hey, don't tell me mum. it's delicious. >> they wanted to come in and express their best wishes. >> yes, absolutely. yes, we love you all. >> so, isha, that's what you experience when you come out here. and the long walk is about a mile long in this stretch. the folks who come out really have a seat that's so close when

the royal couple comes through here. the carriage will be literally 15 feet from where they're standing. this is where you want to be. again, thousands of people already lined up waiti for the festivities to isha? >> oh, so wonderful. so wonderful to see the people from all around the world wishing this couple just the very best start to their marriage life. jason carroll, thank you very much for giving us the flavor of where you are. and as we take these pictures of windsor and you see the chapel where meghan markle will marry her prince a short time from now, it truly is breathtaking. and you may not be able to hear it, but where i am in windsor the classical music is playing and it feels like we're on a movie set, quite frankly. it feels so dream like, this beautiful sound and the crowd very much getting into the romantic spirit of things. we have just hours to go before

the royal wedding. the suspense is building about who meghan markle will wear for this wedding. only one woman has this assignment, cnn's bianca nobilo. ay word on that wedding dress? >> no definitive word, isha, but so much speculation. this dress will be in museum, replicated. it will set all the bridle trends for months if not years to come. thatress behind me in the clifton house where she'll be getting ready this morning. and in about three hours time she'll be driving right by where i am on her way to st. georgie' chapel. they spent the night here, a luxurious, really tranquil,

exclusive hotel where she's been staying. she will have got the best service and reportedly the dress has arrived before her. but we're not sure. the front runners for that still remain russo, perhaps stella mccarthny, so much speculation, so many rumors. and we have to remind ourselves that until the moment that kate middleton stepped out on her wedding day, alexander mcqueen, that fashion house denied they were the ones that made that dress and indeed they did. we're really not sure what to believe at the moment, but the moment we do, we'll give you a clue. >> we are all waiting with baited fresh. earlier in the week she interviewed the codesigner of

princess dianea's dress. closely guarded secret, who meghan markle will be wearing when she walks down the aisle. max foster, tossing it over to you. you have deep sources. what are they saying to you? what's the favorite of this dress? >> i didn't quite hear the end of that, isha. but we just had a tweet from the archbishop of canterbury praying for ms. markle and harry today as they commit their lives together before god and we all share in that joy with them. royal events are key events for the church. they want people to celebrate marriage and chit to marriage, and this is going to be a true example. which is why we see the

archbishop. the official order of service was published overnight. the reason they put it online is that people at home can download it and sing along. now guide me great redeemer would be sung. diana's sister is giving a reading representing a side of harry's family. the last time we heard from her was at diana's funeral. also a civil rights reference for the use of "this little light of mine" during the procession. that will actually be a really symbolic moment in royal history when we have this ord of service, isha, which has meghan

markle's name in it that he couldn't turn up, a painful moment for meghan i'm told. >> breaking news we indeed have that -- i want to talk to you about this, the breaking news we're getting here on cnn that prince harry has received that harry will be the duke of sussex and meghan markle will be the duchess of sussex. was this the item we checked them to receive? >> that's how we're going to know them from now on, so meghan

markle will be the duchess of sussex. that is bestowed by the queen, that title, so that was in her gift. they just made that announcement. technically what happens during the services as soon as she accepts harry as her husband and he accepts her as his wife, she technically becomes her royal highness, princess of whales. but as a feminist she won't go around using that title. she is a princess in all intents and purpose, but because she's not a blood princess she'll never be princess meghan, although she'll probably get known as that. >> i think it's a pretty safe bet she'll get known as that. just to be clear with them being the duke and duchess of sussex, in the event of children, yes we are getting ahead of ourselves, they haven't evetied the knot yet, but what does it make their children?

>> well, they will be for example, if they name their son matt, which i hear is very likely, it will be prince matt of sussex. it was a vacant title. there aren't many vacant titles. we now know as soon as they're married they will be the duke and duchess of sussex. i think it's a difficult one, though, i have to say isha, because as much as kate middleton is the duchess of cambridge you really keep the name that made you famous. so i think to the wider world she'll always be meghan markle. >> no, absolutely. but if they do have a daughter and want to name her isha, they do have my blessing for that. they can go ahead with that. max foster, thank you for the perspective. in the hours ahead we look forward to seeing these key

marriage prince harry will become the duke of sussex. meghan markle will therefore become the duchess of sussex. let's discuss this with kate williams and also cnn contributor and author of "elizabeth the queen." sally, we've also got a couple of other titles which is customary. what do you make of sussex? >> sussex i think is what everybody has been predicting. it's been vacant for a while. i think it's preferable to some of the others that were under consideration. >> like clarence. >> clarence which has an unfortunate connotation because eddy, the duke of clarence was one of the children of king george v -- excuse me, he was one of the children of king

and he was originally betrothed to princess may, and then he had an horrific death in york cottage surrounded by his entire family. very dramatic. and then princess may went onto marry the future george v. >> and this is the title that's bestowed by the queen. >> yes. >> but she'll also be a princess technically, princess henry. >> princess henry, which she wouldn't want to go by. but she is a legitimate princess. >> yes. it's just a line up of police getting into position but everyone's family here in the fields here. kate, what do you think of sussex? >> i think it's marvelous, and i think the people of sussex are going to be having street

parties. did you know the duke of sussex gave away queen victoria on her wedding day? she herself gave her daughters away. she really broke the precedent about a man giving the bride away. i can it's a going to be a wonderful title, meghan and the duke of sussex. i love it. >> he'll also be an earl of scotland. he only uses that in england. >> that's absolutely correct. so they don't normally get a welsh title because he's already harry whales and his brother and prince of whales. so they usually get it at

scotland and oer titles.wh he ie barren es. so she is a baroness, a duchess and a countess and a princess. she goes in ms. markle and comes out baroness, princess, highness and duchess. and now we also see prince harry becoming part of the order of the garter as william is, as the queen is, this vital order of chiv chivalry. it is the beginning of a new chapter for meghan and harry. >> they're excited to see there. that will happen after the service, won't it? >> yes. >> do you think this is the last

big royal wed something. >> well, i think for the foreseeable future there is obviously going to be a wedding of princess eugeneny in october. but it's going to be much more of a family wedding. this is not only a family wedding, it's an englo-american union, bringing together two cultures. eaton, northwestern university. it is a much more diverse crowd than i think it's ever been at any royal wedding. >> absolutely. isha, royal families in europe used to unite, and finally the british families are globalizing. this is united wedding, the united states and united kingdom coming together today. >> it is. it is a very special union. marking a special friendship

between the two countries you'd say. meghan markle is bring her own brand of glamour to britain. and one of the questions everyone is asking at this point who is the mystery designer of meghan's dress? we're getting close to the big reveal.

welcome to windsor. i'm max foster. amongst the crowds along the long walk leading up to the castle. >> i feel like rapunzal. waiting to see prince harry and his new bride a couple of hours from now. the final count down is on max, and we're learning breaking news we want to share with our viewers around the united states and around the world. prince harry and meghan markle are set to become the duke and duchess of sussex today upon their marriage. meghan becomes the first person t hold the title of duchess of sussex. she gets many titles on this

day. she gets duchess, baroness and of course she will become a princess. quite a day for meghan markle. we're looking at it live pictures now as we see the cars starting to make their way down the street. guests will soon imminently begin to arrive at the chapel and certainly on the grounds of windsor itself we know some 1,200 members of the public were invited so they can witness their special day. so excited, so many flags out here. lots of british flags, some american flags. people from all around the world here to welcome meghan into this fammy. there will not be a royal wedding of this caliber for quite some time, so this is truly a historic moment. one of the most fascinating parts of royal weddings of all sorts and sizes, of course the headgear. in particular i'm talking about fascinators. there will be quite a parade of hats today.

you were actually meant to wear a hat. it is part of the protocol for women at royal weddings. i want to talk to a woman who knows all about headgear. she's designed hats for the royal family and many of the guests at this royal wedding. she joins us with some wonderful headgear of her own. welcome. >> good morning. >> so tell us about what kind of hats we expect -- good morning. tell us what kind of hats you're expecting to see today and do you have a hand in some of the hats you'll see today? >> we have had a hand in some of the hats today. yes, it's been a really lovely lead up to this wedding and what a glorious lead up. it's been wonderful. we've made quite a lot of pieces for this wedding, and there will be lots of disk shapes, lots of head fe headpieces. more substantial pieces are what we're going to see. >> okay.

what's your thinking behind that, why they would say hats not fascinators? give us some insight into the etiquette or just the thinking here. >> i think they probably specified hats, substantial headpieces because when one thinks of a nfascinator perhaps one thinks of a bit of fluff, and they want the ladies to dress well, so they're wearing more substantial pieces which is what i'm wearing today, a quite substantial hairpiece. >> it is. it's absolutely stunning. i don't know how you keep it on your head, but it is a truly stunning. talking about fascinators and the connotations i mean certainly with prince william's wedding we saw, you know, his cousin princess beatrice in that headgear which was considered to be a bit of a fashion faux pa.

do you think we're going to see something like that today? >> i think there'll be lots of interesting pieces today,nd a i don't know whether it's a sort of faux pa. i think we should forget that headpiece she was wearing that maybe wasn't great on the day. let's put it behind us. beautiful young girls. so many beautiful pieces are going to be worn today. and i think the idea of a headpiece, something like this, i've brought something to show you. this is piece that will probably be seen today. it's, you know, the whole shape of it is lovely. i don't know if you can sort of pick up on the feathers here and on the silver guilds. it's a disk shape and easy to wear. >> yes, we can. it's beautiful. >> it's easy and flattering to

wear. i've got a traditional hat hat to show you. this is very much a vivian piece. we've got a little shop in chelsea which we just opened last week. what a great time to open a store in london. and we've had many people coming in up to the last minute for pieces not just similar to the hat shape, obviously it's a traditional hat, beautiful feathering and elegant brim. so, yeah and the beret shape. actually, this is lovely piece, too. the business is based in wiltshire, and we get a lot of our inspiration from the wiltshire countryside. expect to see a lot of gentle colors at this wedding. >> i have to say of the three

within st. george's chapel. all these floral arrangements are being sourced locally from the royal parts. and you can see there white roses. who liked white roses? princess diana. prince harry and meghan markle set to become the duke and duchess of sussex. meghan is becoming the first person to hold the title of the duchess of sussex and the only other person to hold the title of duke of sussex is actually an anti-slivery campaigner. a fascinating connection for the couple and this title. it was bestowed by the queen, though. they wouldn't have a stay in it. we get a reel sense of that nature i suspect by the tiara she's given. we're getting closer to the moment prince harry marries the love of his life, meghan markle. the first love of his life,

princess diana will certainly be there in spirit. let's talk about how the relationship between the late princess diana and her younger son developed. her former chief of staff joins me. thank you very much for joining us. are you able to describe the relationship harry had with his mother for us today? >> well, there's no doubt that william and harry were the center of princess diana's universe. didn't matter where we were in the world, so long as she could get to a phone so she could speak to them at bedtime. and she was always in a great rush to get on the plane back home back from her overseas tour so she could see them. as her planner, as the man in charge of her program it was very much a priority for me to make sure she got all the time she possibly could with the boys. >> how do you think she will be

reflected? we've got a few pointers, one of her favorite hymns will be sung. we know her sister will be speaking. when jane fellows goes up and says those words, that's going to be quite poignant, isn't it, if you haven't heard from her in public at least since the funeral. >> that's true. and of course jane and her husband lord fellows who was the queen's private secretary at the time of charles and diana's separation was both centrally involved on the official side of that sad period. and jane and the other members of the family, of course, immense value to william and harry and diana at a time of great personal stress. a contruast to the bit of happiness today and a nice

continuity. >> is it your understanding harry has stayed close to the spencer family over the years? >> i'm sure that the relationship with diana's family has been just as he wants it. they're all busy people, and lord spencer, charles spencer at the time of diana's funeral of course stressed the importance of william and harry's whole family. and like a lot of family relationships this is lifetime thing, and i'm quite sure that as meghan and harry evolve in their own marriage and have hopefully children, they will be a great source of strength and experience for them to have this wider family to call upon. >> okay. patrick, thank you very much for joining us today to talk about how diana looms large in the service today. we'll talk about a few more of

he is constick yaus in his absence. a closer look at the sometimes strained relationship. leyla, the big question on everyone's mind is where is thomas markle right now? >> isha, that remains a bit of a mystery. we have spent the last week here in rosarita beach, and that was magnified as we came closer and closer to this big day, after there was a bit of drama. first he was going to go and then he wasn't, and then it

became a bit of a medical issue after a heart attack and as well as the need for heart surgery. we actually went to the hospital where he went after the heart attack. they told us that he had been there, they could confirm the surgery. but i did speak to a friend of his who says he is recovering, he is doing better. and while they're still a lot of paparazzi sort of surrounding his home given the confusion of this week of where he would be to watch this wedding, what we understand is he is talking to tmz, and he has said he will watch this from a secluded place, and quote, hopefully no press. isha. >> leyla santiago there with the latest whereabouts of meghan's father. and we cannot forget prince harry is military man.

a look at how that will influence the ceremony as we talk to a guest who will actually be there.

ahead. i want to bring in our next guest, also a veteran from afghanistan. he has managed to bag an invite to this wedding and she joins us now. thank you for being with us. first of all, tell me how excited are you to be one of the special chosen ones attendance this wedding? >> well, yeah, i'm very excited to get into the castle and see what's going on in there. maybe have a bit of a picnic and some presecco. >> and so what does it mean to you to have so many members of the military involved in this ceremony on this day? i mean, what does it mean to you? >> well, i think it was always going to be a big military day so it was with harry serving in

afghanistan as well. yeah, it's just amazing to me as well when somebody in the army gets married it's such a big occasion. so we're really looking forward to it. >> is there a particular moment you're looking forward to seeing more than any other? >> i think when they're in the carriage and on their trip riding around the castle, i think it's going to be a very special moment. i know the horse guards as well are coming up and with the carriage as well. >> i mean, can you believe the atmosphere? if you could sum it up for our viewers around the world in one word, what would you say to sum up the atmosphere here in windsor ahead of this big day, this big moment? >> absolutely amazing.
