george's chapel. and a fairy tale will really begin in this special moment and so many people from around the world have flown in to be here. 100,000 people will fill winder. we are here for it. cnn's special coverage continues next with stunning images. good morning. we're live in england for a royal wedding unlike any other in history. prince harry and meghan markle exchange vows in just a few hours. well come to our viewers.
1:01 am
i'm anderson cooper. thanks so much for joining us. crowds are gathering awaiting their first glimpse of harry and megh meghan, about to join their lives and bring a new sensibility perhaps to one of the oldest monarchies. we have a spectacular view down the long walk which leads as you can see to the beautiful windsor castle. i'm joined by max foster, who is a royal correspondent. meghan plans to make an unprecedented walk down the aisle. >> she'll come to the church on her own, surrounded by a lot of kids. >> as many as ten. >> and one of them is two. absolutely chaos, we can expect that. >> and prince william's daughter and son. >> and charlotte loves the cameras. and what that image will say is
1:02 am
meghan m meghan markle dragging them into the modern age. >> and at this point what do we know about how she will walk the aisle? >> she will walk the first part on her own, but you then prince charles will pick her up but she is giving herself away. >> and let's go over to alisyn camero camerota. >> it is such a sparkly beautiful day here, millions of people around the globe are watching this historic event to see the vows. they are hoping for a big kiss. they want to see the carriage ride through town and so much more. we're also standing by of course for all of the celebrity arrivals and the other vip wedding guests, so they will be arriving momentarily. and then of course followed by the royals and finally the bride. everyone can't wait to see what she will be wearing and what she looks like today on the big day.
1:03 am
and we've learned the official titles that the queen has given to the soon to be newlyweds. harry and meghan will be known as the duke and cuspest of sussex. we have our royal commentators standing by to give us perspective. we have richard quest. what does it mean, the duke and duchess of sussex? i like the ring of it. >> and a fascinating choice of titles that once again speaks to this idea of bringing the thousand year old tradition, it is a monarchy that has lasted for so long now being dragged into the 21st century. an unused title, hasn't been used for a couple of century, now back in to use. we'll talk more about the significance of that particular title. >> because it is laden with significance. the previous duke of sussex -- >> absolutely. he was very much a liberal. his own marriage was annulled in
1:04 am
somewhat dubious circumstances. he was for freeing of the slaves. he was for reducing the restrictions on the jewish community. and he was against the corn laws. so here you have meghan joining the royal family, this liberal american joining a thousand year institution and now got the title the first by the way, the first female to be the duchess of sussex. >> oh, my gosh, that is wonderful perspective. i love the sub text of all of that. now we want to go to whiclariss ward. she is outside st. george's chapel. and you have new insight into meghan's role in planning the wedding. >> that's right. what we're learning is that yesterday during a rehearsal for the ceremony, meghan and her mother doria were not entirely satisfied with the floral arrangement. they thought they looked beautiful, but they didn't feel that there were enough of them. so the florist who has been
1:05 am
tasked with masterminding all of the floral arrangements for this wonderful celebration had to have her team working overtime bringing in a ton more of foliage, flowers. we're told that now the inside of the chapel looks a little bit like what perhaps you can see over my right hand shoulder here, that arch with all different types of locally sourced foliages. you'll notice the emphasis on local. and i think what this goes to show you you is while there may be hundreds involved with the organization of this wedding, while there may be millions of dollars spent on it, this is me a began's wedding and the bride is like any other bride, she has a very hands on approach, she wants things to look perfect and just exactly how she wants them to look. >> there is a lot to cover on over the hours ahead and of
1:06 am
course so many people who have been gathering here, i got here probably about 3:00 a.m. local time, and there were already people lining the long walk, lining the route that this couple will be taking in a carriage. let's talk about that walk down the aisle. max foster, again, meghan markell will be walking the first part by herself with the m maids of on honhonor. >> and we can take a shot again at the steps again, literally 20 steps, the walk of dread. the car will be there. she will walk up 20 steps with ten children aged 2 to 7. mothers are in charge of corralling the kids, so kate will be there. >> but a number of the little kids have actually done this before. >> they have done. and they have been rehearsing twice. and it's gone wrong every time.
1:07 am
so they are all quite nervous. but i think that is kate's problem today. >> so meghan markell will be walking -- initially she wanted her father to escort her down the iaisle. that won't happen. >> an official will meet her at the door, he will walk in front of her, the children behind her. and then she is going to go up to the second part of the church, the choir. and thomas markle was going to pick her up and walk her along. they didn't have time to reprint the order of service. she decided that she wanted prince charles to fill in for her father once he said he suffered bad health and can't go. i was told she never considered her mother. it was always going to be charles. >> but her mother who arrived here several days ago has met with the queen. her father has not.
1:08 am
>> imagine, in the castle. >> but she is going to be in the vehicle driving with her. >> yes, so she will drive with meghan to the castle. doria will get out of the car. excuse me, that is my -- so sorry, that is so unprofessional, but that was the palace. >> well, why don't you take that call. >> it is only the palace. my wife is going to be so angry. >> you're funny. >> just to say that you will have doria get out of the car and meghan will travel with a couple pageboys up the steps. >> and check what they said. we're already starting to see some guests arrive. how unusual is this situation in terms of meghan walking down the beginning of the aisle by herself? >> it is completely
1:09 am
unprecedented. this is a whole wedding of firsts. nor normally you can tell the time of what the royals do because they are so regimented in everything. but this very much has harry and meghan's seal stamped all over it. so i think for me thinking about that walk, it seems like quite a long walk to take along, but has max pointed out, she will be corralling all these children. >> afsnd this is prince harry's private ceremony. he has been crucial in organizing all of this. he's had an immensely difficult time in the last fuf montew mon is leaving the job after the wedding. >> and th decision by her to walk unescorted, what do you think that says about meghan? >> the meghan that i know has always been very independent. she is very confident. i can see why she always had the
1:10 am
decision to walk that first part alone and to have her father and now prince charles join her halfway through. i think it is a sign of her personality. and i think you see that in these few outings with harry and meghan, that she isn't just going to stand back there and not say anything. she will have the voice that she has. >> and bonnie greer is with us as well. as you imagine -- as you are going to watch meghan markell walking down that i'll, for you what is standing out today? >> so many things. first of all her ancestry. for me as an african-american, she it is very moving. and to become the first dutch zest of sussex, and this man championed the abolition of slavery, so the queen has nailed this perfectly. and it allows meghan to actually have a platform by which they can move naturally out of that platform as an american woman, a new british citizen eventually
1:11 am
and the only and first dutch ch of sussex. so spot on. >> and if you could explain how is it decided what title that they will be called? >> well, this one has been the one predicted almost from day one, probably the worst kept secret. this one really is great because there are so many positive connotations. as bonnie pointed out, she will be the first duchess of sussex. the previous duke was married devic twice, but neither wife was considered appropriate. yes, he bought for abolition of slavery. he was considered very liberal minded for his time. he was queen victoria's favorite uncle. >> so is it not a compakocompai that this was picked? >> nothing happens by chance. there is a lot of symbolism. and the fact that it was available, it was just a
1:12 am
i think that why it was picked from day one. >> and 600 invited guests will be inside, more than 1,000 more than outside. still ahead, the big reveal, meghan markle's wedding down. will she break royal traditions. we'll be right back. been trying to prepare for this day... and i'm still not ready. the reason i'm telling you this is that there will be moments in your life that... you'll never be ready for. your little girl getting married being one of them. ♪ ♪
