dynasties, the kennedys." >> you're never running against one kennedy. it's a full family affair. >> we had seen a different world. >> they made a lot more enemies than friends, and some of those enemies are truly dangerous. >> with the kennedys it's always tragedy and triumph mixed together. mr. trump welcome add freed american who spent nearly two dwreers in a prison in venezuela without a trial, plus this. >> and the crazy thing is everybody is out here surfing and we are pretty close to north
1:01 am
korea. cnn newsroom starts now. 4:01 days after donald trump abruptly cancelled. the u.s. president now says the preparations for that meeting are moving ahead, listen. >> if we can be successful in the denuclearization of the korean peninsula it would be a great thing for north korea and south korea and great for japan and great for the world, great for the united states, great for china. a lot of people are working on
1:02 am
it. june 12th. the day for that meeting less than three weeks away. many doubt there is enough time to pull together a high stakes meeting like this. but they are going to try. the leaders of north and south korea met in secret on saturday. on that score they seem to have succeeded. afterwards the south korean president said that kim still wants to meet with mr. trump and reminded it was committed to denuclearization. matt, this back and forth, this push and pull, it seems we are getting a little more incite into what north korea wants. >> yeah. that's exactly right. we are getting a bit more of an
1:03 am
idea. we know that the two men met for about two hours. when the south korean president spoke with reporters he talked about the fact that kim jong un wants to have this summit. it was a couple of days ago that there was deep disappointment here in south korea. it wasn't clear it would be on. while there hasn't been an official announcement that the summit is back on on june 12th that is certainly the vieb you're getting from all parties involved that the summit is more -- in terms of what that is going to look like the details behind it, you mentioned that's lot that has to go into this summit. there is a question that has to
1:04 am
be accomplished at this summit. given that they are publicly saying that they want this summit to go forward it does appear there is certain lay lot of cautious optimism here. >> matt, we have seen one surprise after another. is there a sense there from leaders that from what you're hearing that all sides that allies are working together despite one surprise after the other? his summit is going to depend, the success depends on what he is calling practical talks that are ongoing between the north koreans and americans. the other thing that's interesting is we did get incite
1:05 am
into what he wants. let's play you a little bit of sound from when he briefed reporters here in seoul. >> i told chairman kim president trump is willing for economic copper ration and ending hostile relations. >> the south korean president went onto say what kim jong un is concerned about is not his -- he is concerned about his
1:06 am
security guarantee from the united states. it appears he needs further convincing it can be in exchange. what you're not hear sg an unequivocal claim to give up nuclear weapons completely. what you'll hear is there is a lot of gray area when you talk about the denuclearizing what does that look like? is that kind of vague language enough for the united states to sit down at this summit in just a couple of weeks because i can give you a bunch of north korean experts who say they will not give up his nuclear weapons without an incredible amount in return by the united states. >> at the end of the day that's what it comes down to, what will be on the table, what are the details here? thank you so much for the reporting. let's bring in martin when
1:07 am
the department of wars, it's a pleasure to have you here to talk about this. from what you're hearing from north korea for these talks to take place clearly security guarantees are a top priority for kim jong un, for the united states. it's about denuclearization. the devil always in the details. what do you believe the details will be? >> well, i think that denuclearization is not on the table here. both of the leaders will agree that that is the objective for nuclear weapons to be removed but the more immediate objectives will be from the american point of view. the destruction or the missiles hitting the united states and also a freeze on north korean nuclear tests and nuclear
1:08 am
weapons production. they will want the guarantees and also promises of economic aid. >> for north korea when it comes to denuclearization do you see that country opening itself up to the rigorous tests, the inspections that would be necessary to prove that they are following through? >> well, that is going to be the difficulty. the north koreans do not like external parties coming into the countries and moving around the military sites. kim needs this deal more than trump does. trump, the worst thing that happens to him, he returns to trump tower in new york.
1:09 am
the worst thing that happens to kim, is that he ends up like gadhafi that he pointed out to him by mr. bolton and mr. pence. i think kim is going to have to give way on these points. >> the united states and south korean described their alliance as ironclad. clearly president trump cancelled the summit to the surprise of the south korean leader. he held a surprise summit. are these different interests at play here? is it every man for himself? >> the south koreans should not have been surprised. this decision by president trump to cancel the summit was straight out of his play book. i mean literally. if you read page 52 or 53 says explicitly the worst thing you
1:10 am
can do is give the impression you really want the deal. as mr. trump says he smells trump and you are dead. it is clear he was going to play hard to get. i think he has shown he could walk away from this deal and he is not to the north koreans or south koreans and he will do a deal south koreans should understand this. it is a way that mr. trump will never negotiate. trump will not do that. i mean ultimately there is distance between them. the americans will look off to the own interests. they want to ensure that the north koreans could not hit the continental united states with nuclear armed missiles. the americans will only move if they can assure this. there will be a difference of approach between south korea and
1:11 am
the united states. >> thank you. for almost two years an american and his wife feared for their lives behind bars in venz w w venezuela. you have k see that right here. the white house is warning their release does not change u.s. policy on venezuela. >> president trump hosting joshua holt in the oval office on saturday night shortly after holt was released from a ve venezuelan prison. the president thanked everyone involved in his release. it secured her release.
1:12 am
>> you're caring about me just a normal person. i want to welcome you to the white house. it's really very special to have you both. you have gone through a lot. you have gone through a lot, more than most people could endure. you were really very very special. there was not a day that -- there wasn't an hour or minute you weren't thinking about this man and calling everybody and letting us know. >> the president also took the opportunity to point out during his administration 17 americans being held captive overseas have been released. hi compared himself to the pred sesz sore in that record.
1:13 am
he should note two security officials have told us that the united states offered nothing in exchange for the release of joshua holt. it is surprising considering there is rhetoric between the two sides in recent days, about a week since the election in which he was elected to another six year term. cnn at the white house. >> thank you. still ahead, the southeast earn part of the united states prepares for the first storm of the hurricane season, the very latest on alberto just ahead. an atlanta area doctor that dances during surgery is facing mounting legal trouble. why she is still allow today practice. stay with us.

it doesn't go well for u.s. drivers who have seen a big jurp in gas prices. we have more now on this crude awakening. >> well, this is already shaping up to be one of the most expensive summer travel season for the 36 million people who are hitting the road according to aaa. a reason we are seeing the gas, one of them is the president reimposing sanctions in iran. there is also a higher demand for fuel so the result is about a 31% increase in the cost of fuel when you compare it to what we saw last year. this could come with political impact here, for example, president trump also several republican lawmakers who have been riding the wave of success after recent tax reform could see many constituents upset over the price of gas. it koud become a major pocket gook issue. many people may be left to ask
1:22 am
what good is all of this additional take home pay if many of it is being spent here at the pumps? the price of gas about $3.10. i can tell you reaction has been mixed. some people say gas prices, when it comes to that it is what it is. they have seen prices go up and down and they hope it will be short lived. they are genuinely concerned. an uber driver says a $3 gas budget is something not that he has considered but could lead to a change in jobs. this is what we are seeing right now. the summer travel season begins. it is the highest price of gas we have seen in a while but seriously concerned about the price at the pump. back to you. >> thanks for the report. now here to the u.s. state of georgia a doctor is on the hot seat for dancing during surgery. a number of patients have left

the eighth amendment was started in 1983. there wasn't a big social movement seeking abortion rights. there was a movement for womens liberation. it was a strike against womens liberation and on friday and when we counted the boxes yesterday and it became clear that in the 35 years since then despite the efrforts of the institution women have been liberated and almost 70% of our citizens agree we should have agency and the right to choose whether or not to remain pregnant when pregnancy happens. i think it's an absolutely incredible weekend for ireland. i think it shows that we want a institution and a law that reflects our society and our real lives here and the fact that we are a loving and caring
1:37 am
society and we believe women should be able to decide what happens in our reproductive lives. >> i would like to get your thoughts about ireland with m so of the strictest abortion laws, talk to us about what it means in reality for women who ke manded the law change. >> the law is exceilly thick. so there are only about two dozen legal abortion i in ireland in any given year. in the same year 4 no 5,000 irish women there travel across and take pills the new law
