the u.s. president revives hopes of a summit with kim jong un. later this hour fans celebrate as real madrid wins.
2:01 am
the u.s. president says preparations for the summit with kim jong un are moving ahead. >> we have been in the denuclearization. it would be a great thing for north korea and south korea, great for the united states, great for china. a lot of people are working on it. it is moving along very nicely. we are looking at june 12th in singapore. that hasn't changed. >> the day for that meeting is less than three weeks away. many doubt it's enough time to pull together a high stakes meeting like this. they are going to try. leaders of north and south korea met secretly in the demilitarized zone to see if they could revive the process. they seem to have succeeded. the president said kim still want today meet with mr. trump
2:02 am
and he remained committed to denuclearization. let's bring in matt rivers. looking back it this we are getting more incite into what north korea wants. >> yeah. he did brief reporters here in seoul. this is a little bit of what he had to say about this meeting. >> they told chairman kim if he decides to put into action president trump is willing for economic cooperation and ending hostile nominations.
2:03 am
as a continuation chairman kim once again affirmed his emphasizing he will clear the history of war and cooperate with peace and prosperity through a successful north korean u.s. summit. kim jong un, we had heard from the president. he has given a guarantee for the regime, making sure it can stay on. apparently the words is not enough for the regime. there is concern if north korea were to give up their nuclear weapon which they would say the not that likely he would want a stronger security guarantee.
2:04 am
is it removal of u.s. troops? does it mean the tearing down of missile defense systems? does it mean the removal of troops in japan? we don't know the answers yet but we are getting a little more incite. >> we are looking ahead now. let's talk about what we just saw here with the president of south korea crossing over into the north. talk to us about the reactions to what happened. zbl zbl >> seeing the photos there is clearly to relationship. they clearly established a personal repore. it is something that the south koreans reached out.
2:05 am
but clearly these two men have established a relationship that just a couple of months ago would have seemed absolutely outlandish to suggest they would have met twice in one month's time. there is enough of a dialogue they were able to pull together what really amounts to an emergency meeting. the north and south came together in about 24 hours. it shows you the amount of progress that has been made here at least between the two koreas. >> you're really setting the stage for this next story. tnchts united states and korea may be on the stage of the first ever summit. michael explains how we got to
2:06 am
this point. north korea will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. >> in september north korea conducted a sixth nuclear test. he warned kim that the u.s. had a button and it was bigger and
2:07 am
more powerful. the white house indicated a willingness to hold talks with north korea. in february north korea sent 22 athletes the compete in five sports at the pyeongchang winter olympics. in march president trump accepted the invitation to talk with kim jong un. ? april the president revealed a secret eastern weekend visit by pompeo. two days later north korea announced it had suspended all missile tests and that it was shutting down a nuclear test
2:08 am
site. he made a second visit to pyeongchang. he announced a summit would take place on june 12th announcing it by twitter. things started to unravel when john bolton mentioned the so called libyan model. despite an eight year gap and the downfall of the former leader north korea didn't seem to appreciate his comments or vice president mike pence's subsequent explanation. >> it will only end if he doesn't make a deal. >> some people saw that as a threat. >> i think it's more of a fact. >> an official called the comparison ignorant and stupid,
2:09 am
labeled the u.s. vice president a political dummy. he said whether the u.s. will meet us or encounter us at nuclear to nuclear showdown is dependent on the behavior of the united states. that proved to be the last straw for the u.s. president donald trump sent a letter to kim jong un cancelling the summit leaving the door open for possible future talks. cnn atlanta. >> are you surprised? >> i think we are surprised the
2:10 am
fact that i think we are in unchartered ter troiritory. it shows you what will happen future. they have said what's needed, the conditions, etcetera but it's what trump likes to turn upside down. >> do you get a sense there will be enough time or thewill it be meeting as opposed to having so many people involved in the process? >> well, in this type of thing it is very complex denuclearization. there is never enough time. it is based on what's in the agenda. this is something that these two men at the top of the command chain, they have to face each
2:11 am
other and kind of feel each other out and see what they want to talk about and what level of detail, if any, they want to proceed. that is what a negotiation is about. we can't put the cart before the horse. so it's step-by-step. >> from what we are hearing from north korea the talks for them to take place clearly security guarantees are a top priority. it is about denuclearization. the devil always in the details. what do you believe the details will be? >> i think the issue is time and process. these two things lead to security guarantees. what will they want to give up if that's the case. a rough analogy is why does someone have weapons at home? i think they will fear some type of force used against thhim. it is sort of the mind set. why does it have nuclear
2:12 am
weapons? i think it's based on fear. so these have to be hammered out. >> they describe it as ironclad. clearly president trump cancelled the summit to the surprise of the south korean leader are these different interests at play or is there are sense that it's every man for himself to figure this thing out? >> there is a quote that says they have prominent interests. so the u.s. is trying to protect it's interests. same with south korea and north
2:13 am
korea. i think one issue is people want security and stability in northeast asia. how to get there, these things are very detailed and very complex and i think that's why trump and kim have to speak in the same room. this is unprecedented. i think either a lot or very little progress can be made if this is the case. i'm hoping it will be the case. >> what is the influence of china in all of this? >> i think china and south korea, what they are trying to do is -- as we have seen in the last few weeks president moon wants to play the lead mediator role. i think he is taking a lot of this on his effectiveness in doing that. all of a sudden china sees itself as sort of the odd man out. i believe it is trying to
2:14 am
reassert itself. there might be a little bit of clash because inevitably the interests will be at the mix. >> it is an interesting point. we have seen two readings with kim jong un. we have now seen two meetings with kim jong un and president moon. the question now, will that meeting take place with donald trump? wait and see. thank you so much for your time and perspective today. >> thank you. venezuela released an american and his wife from behind bars, how their freedom was secured and how this effects the u.s. administrations approach to venezuela. >> prlus womens rights advocate cheer a historic decision. not everyone is happy there. stay with us. moisturizer from .
