welcome to inside politics. thank you for sharing your day with us. first it was changing recollections. now a mistake. the trump white house caught in a russian meddling lie and rudy gi to explain it away. plus the special counsel sends a blunt law and order message. accusing paul nafort of witness tampering and asks the judge to toss him in jail. and no white house celebration for the super bowl champs. president trump gets mad when told most players weren't coming. pulls the invitation and stokes his war with nfl players over national anthem protests. >> the president obviously does not agree with the tactics of some players that have been taking a knee. i think it is ironic that none of the philadelphia eagles during the season last year had taken a . you had guys raise a fist, but none of the guys had taken a

knee. >> that is where we start the hour. it seems a sports team fight, but a statement now on a fresh culture war over the planned visit by the super bowl champions. the white house canceled that visit monday officials told the administration only a handful of players planned to show up. now the white house is blaming the team. saying it changed the plan at last minute. tried to schedule the celebration without the president. the eagles offered to send a handful while the great majority would not attend the event despite planning to be in d.c. the white house says the vast majority of the eagles team decided to abandon their fans. that's the white house take on twitter. the president tied cancelling the visit to eagles players kneeling in prote of em. one problem. that did not happen. it is not true. no eagles players took a knee during the anthem in any regular

season or post season games. one player did raise his fist, but stopped after and money r c. no one refused to go as the president came e come because t insisted people stand for the anthem. with me today to share the reporting and insights is "the times" molly ball and m.j. lee. we start with inside sports today in the sense. in some ways this is a silly dispute. it will not affeeffect the pric gas or jobs. what does the president relish this fight? >> because it works for him. essenced the grow -- he sensed the growing divide of people who did not like to see the handful
9:03 am
of players kneeling or not respecting the national anthem. the president turned a minor controversy into a major moment. he likes big crowd sizes. we know that is something we talkver and the white house believes they were misled and disrespected. the white house says there were 81 people who cleared by the secret service for the event today. yesterday, they found only out a handful -- the white house version of events -- were coming. the president did not want to be left with a mascot and handful of players. he made that unusual statement. what is this for him is another mid-term election year base firing up culture war event. >> yet, it is the white house back off somewhat? the president's statements made it about the anthem. the president went straight to the culture war. these guys don't like me because i'm in their face about saluting
9:04 am
the flag and standing up to the military. the statement saying nothing about the anthem. the team said 81 were coming and now a handful. they accused the team of bad faith. this seems to be a retreat in the story line. >> don't thinkeam is gointo r about the bad feelings. this continues to be a crisis for the nfl. that is the most significant thing about the tweets last night. beyond this particular controversy, he also said staying in the locker room doesn't fix the problem. that was the gesture that the nfl made a couple weeks ago thinking they came up with a compromise or something to make thent stand down ons issue that has so inflamed the nfl fan base. instead, the president and there were some in the president's orbit declang victory and liked the nfl seemed to have backed down. now you have the president saying no.
9:05 am
i see it as the same thing. this staying in the locker room gestu gesture. it is just as bad. he is reigniting and continuing the war on the nfl in the way i think will be very alarming for the league. >> listen to the mayor of philadelphia who had been aggressive in his response. no, mr. president, america doesn't work that way. you don't get to say my way or the highway. >> i'll take my ball and go home is what he is saying. it is his unless you kneel to me or pay homage to me as president of the united states, i'll disinvite you from the people's house. that is not what the presidency is about. the presidency is about every common person whether look who that office. he doesn't want to treat people equally. only people who supports him are the people he considers real americans. >> is that fair? >> i will not pretend to

understand football. i disagree it is trivial issue. because this is a president w kn happens to put people in two camps. the first is the people who validate his world view and the second is people who disagree with him. i think he has taken an issue that is so complex and so personal and so wrenching for some of the players and essentially asked them to answer the question of are you on my side or not. when you look at the way he has handled this issue, it would be difficult for a man like donald trump. he is a white man living in the united states who was born to a family of such privil even if he tried every day to understand where the black ag t athletes are coming from, it would be difficult for him. instead of thinking for a second maybe i used this as an opportunity to get to know this community better and have these conversations, he instead
9:07 am
decided to say you rejected me and you did not want to come to my party and i am cancelling. >> or if he said i don't understand your issues and i disagree, but i agree you have a first amendment right. you could say that. instead he chooses politics. >> are we surprised by that? i would be surprised if that is what the president desired cide he did choose panhandolitics. his supporters wants a culture war. i argue this is the biggest success of the trump presidency. not tax cuts. that was pushed through by republicans in congress. it wasn't obamacare repeal. you may be able to say iran deal torn up, but we skitill don't kw how that ends. he took an issue that was dead at the beginning of the football season. colin kaepernick wasn't playing for anybody. >> two or three teams had the protest until the president had the fight and more teams
9:08 am
protested. >> it seems to me the hard core trump voters want. this is what they care about more than the policy stuff. a culture war and feeng the president is fighting on their behalf whether we sh a movement that puts stock in the culture war certiseriously. >> he can do this on his own.he senate. it continues the grudge with the nfl. that is part of it. he was shut out years ago and wanted to be a wrespect to the . it didn't happen. it is a two-fer for him. it is a lot. >> we will get to see. country if you will.nt in trump pennsylvania has a senate race. bob casey is one of the ten state democrats trying to hold a senate seat. here is the philadelphia daily news. most close races are won in the suburbs. this may play out in the "t."
