welcome back to another special live hour of "prime time." i'm chris comb. it's 1:00 a.m. in new york. 1:00 p.m. in singapore. where a historic corner is being turned. maybe. kim jong un has come to the table for talks so has trump. this is a new era in as much as many thought a moment like this may never happen in our lifetime. the president says the talks are going quote better than anybody could have expected. then hinted that he and kim were going to some sort of signing. they went went from there to check out the president's car. the beast. it's true we have video. the two men went and looked inside the car and went and talked with advisers and separated. what kind of signing? what does it mean? let's bring in jeff zeleny. there's word from a u.s. official tha signing may have been a little bit of hype from president trump. we're told that signing

references something less than a deal. which makes sense this early in the process. what do you know? >> it does. a u.s. official said a signing is a sense of the progress that was made by the sense they had the meeting and a pledge to go forward and talk. this official wouldn't get into the specific details of what the u.s. will be potentially giving up. look for one thing here, talking to a variety of people over the last several days. is secretary of state and his north careen counter parts have been talking about terms of agreement. the security guarantee is one central element on that. look for potentially something about the security guarantee to be in this document. but the president not uncommon he sthez a lot he's going to a signing. u.s. officials are not putting the brakes on that.

perhaps not raising expectation for what that will be. we should be clear. this is a historic day. these meetings are important. but so much more work to be done. this is the veryinning of this process. do not look f any major signing to signal a major deal. >> this is always the gamble. thank you very much. north careen team the regime got a big win. just by this happening. what will president trump bring home? his party very critical ofpresih cuba. and dealing with despots without preconditions. what will he bring home? we are also in the dark about north korea. and it is made somebody in a bizarre way very relevant once again. a man who calls kim jong un a friend for life. dennis rodman has visited north korea several times. he spent personal time with kim jong un. he said years ago that kim

wanted a meeting like this to happen. people laughed at him. he's now in singapore there he heard from the white house today. he says the president said he's very proud of dennis for his help in what has happened today. take a listen. >> how are you doing guys? >> do you have what does your hat say? >> now i can see it. >> make america great again. you got it? >> thank you. you made your way to singapore. how important is this t you? you talk about the prospect for peace. when we spoke several years ago. did you think this moment would come? >> well in my heart and soul, when i went to north korea i was honored to be selected to go. once i went, i was i didn't really understand what the situation was as far as being over there. and when i first met kim jong un

i was more like know what to expect. i didn't know who he was. i didn't know what he represented. if he was someone important. but i knew something was going on. but once i got familiar with the culture and the situation, i got really used to being there. i felt at home. >> you know both men. you have spent time with the north korean leader. you have spent time with donald trump. how do you think the two men size up in terms of how they might get along? >> well, i think thet trump would understand the fact that the people of north korea have a heart. they have soul. koreans love each other. and the fact kim jong un and his family understand that. i think president trump should understand the fact that the reason why the he respects dennis rodman. he trusts me. i gave him something for his

birthday. i thought i couldn't pull it off. i said to him the day before his birthday i said i'll give you a present. he said what? i said a basketball team professional basketball team to you. he said can you do that? i said yes i can. i knew i couldn't do it. i said if i fail it will be a problem. so i got a lot of people together. i got my sponsor. and it happened and kim jong un came and said you know what this is the first time someone has ever kept their word. to m and my country. i looked at him and almost got emotional. wait a minute,d on. someone never kept their word to you and their country? he said yes. this is the first time. i came through and he really appreciated that. the fact that he's not normally one that's trustworthy. i think that country is normally

hearing people that's always lying and deceitful. and if trump goes in there with a great heart with his heart on the table. and let kim jong un see him really emotional as far as speaking to him. he doesn't have to be about war and hatred or in the past. we're moving to the future. i have told people about kim jong un. he's about the 21st century. trying to progress his country. and trump will do a great job to reach out and make sure our hands are always open. because as americans we have let so many people around the world join us to be happy and one country that's the united states and now we have really put ourself on the line to reach out to north korea. and they have been so gracious to me sdp my family and the united states. let's make it happen. if trump can pull this off, more power to him. >> did kim reach out to you or his people reach out?

the the president's people? for insight into the otherside? >> i have talked to those guys the five years. we talked to kim jong un. and the administration five years ago. he asked me at lunch and he sat down and asked, dennis, i want to ask you three things. tell the president of the united states three things i will be willing to talk to him. this is a true story. i have many people here that heard the conversation. things like if they can move the back from south korea. i would do what i have to do to listen. if you can move some things i will listen. my ears will be open. and i try to do that to a obama. and he didn't even give me the time of day. i asked him i said i have something to say from north korea. he brushed me off.

that didn't deter me. i can want going back. i kept going back. i showed my loyalty and trust to the country. i said to everybody the door will open. >> i remember you saying it. does kim understand english? >> it's amazing. it's amazing when i said those things. when i said those things when i went back home, i got so many death threats. i got so many death threats i was sitting up protecting everything. i believe in north korea. i couldn't even go home. i had to hide out for 30 days. i couldn't even go home. but i kept my head up high. i knew things were going to change knew it. i was the only one. no one heard me. i took the bullets. i took all that.

i took everything. everyone came at me and i'm still standing. today is a great day for everybody. singapore. tokyo and china. it's a great day. >> it is a great day. a historic day. you were saying years ago you thought it would happen. and i want to let you be ready for me to ask another question. i know you're emotional about this. >> go ahead. >> i want to know. i want to know -- you're an emotional guy. you feel deeply. people understand that. why did you feel so strongly that you needed to make something happen for north korea? so many places you could have gone in the world that have a much easier path to peace. than north korea. given the record of human rights abuse and other practices of this regime. you chose north korea. why? >> well, i feel like i was very

naive when i went there. i didn't understand. and expect all the things that were getting when i went over there. do you realize what you're doing i said no. i thought i was doing a charity event. i knew nothing about north korea. i thought i was going to play basketball and be happy and that was it. it turned out to be so much more. i felt the fact just listening to the people seeing the kids and the people. and meeting the regime. kim jong un and the marshalls and everybody. i fell in love with the country. i feel like that i guess i owe it to myself. and the people around the world. i'm not in this for no money. i never started it for money. this is not about dennis rodman being the greatest person in the world to lead them together. it hasz nothing to do with that. i wanted to see it get done so we can live good together. >> here's the first day. >> no more hatred.

>> let's see where it goes. you talk about speaking with kim jong un. does he understand or speak english? >> one thing about him. he's more like a big kid. even though he's small. he loves to have a good time. and i was seeing him this morning he was going around taking selfies and stuff like that. this guy wants to be around the world. he wants to come to america. he wants to enjoy his life. he wants his people to enjoy life. the fact he doesn't have the tools and maybe the fact the politics of this whole meeting. this will change a lot. i hope the fact that president trump can understand knowing kim is trying to reach out. >> that's the big question. i want to ask you about that. let me get an answer. do you think he speaks or

understands english? >> well i think he understands bits and pieces. if you talk about basketball, yes. henderstands that. >> it's about what he wants to talk about? do you think he studied english? >> i t people know that kim jong un is not a dumb man. he's understand from his grandfather and father. he's trying to protect his people. troying to protect his honor and everything that has to do with his country. that's respect. that's respect. nothing will happen over night. it will take time. >> 100%. >> if they understand that the fact that we can sit there and have a smooth a comfortable relationship. smile, laugh and joke. great. it doesn't have to be war. it has to be something everyone can be comfortable about. this meeting will be great. >> that's the hope. we'll see wheret goes. it had a good start. they did the handshake. good body language and said the right things.

it's the opening ceremony. we'll see what happens when we get reports about the actual policy negotiation. you talk about the kim jong un side and north korea. did you hear from the white house today? >> well, yes i did. but the good thing about it. donald tru reached out. he called. his secretary and she called me and said donald trump is so proud of you. he thanks you a lot. that means a lot. because after all the years the fact that i somewhat had something to do with this north korea situation. i don't want to take credit. we all need to take credit. i'm here i'm so thankful to be here. i'm glad this is happening. the world saw it i saw. my kid saw it. let's hope for the best. we don't need a miracle.

we need to start fresh. and make it a better place. that's it. >> look, sometimes it does take a miracle. you're dealing with some really tough things on the table here. i know that you have had good experiences with the leader of north korea. this is a nice momen but you know now things you didn't know then. there's a lot of violence. there's a lot of negativeivity. and it all stems from your friend the ruler of north korea. this man is isn't all selfie ands smiles. he's responsible for the death and hardship of people. how can you be sure he wants something wetter than what he is now? >> the fact that i'm not a politician. i'm not sitting here fighting the fact i'm on his side 24/7. i'm not doing everything to make him look like a better man. i have never been like that. i'm down the middle. he's a good friend to me.

that's what i look at. i don't see the politics of the situation. want to see that. i see that go away. i want to see us get alistening. to have a handshake and a smile. have a glass of ice tea. and talk to each other friendly. i don't worry about the war stuff. i don't know anything about that. i want to do onehing and bring sports to north korea. and bring the kebs with us conn with us. everything else is in donald trumps hand and the white house hands. i'm out of it. i'm happy to be here and see everyone in the world get emotional. and see it really happen. donald trump should take credit for this. he went out the box and made it happen. i want to say one more thing before i leave. i can i thank some people? >> yeah, go ahead. don't go on a whole tour about it. i want to ask you something

the photo op was history. but only policy will make peace any kind of real prospect. so minutes ago president trump to do alongsideim jong un and said a signing is coming soon. on the ground there in singapore. we see the table is set. we also have word from a u.s. official that signing may mean a

promise to keep talking. is that what you're hearing? >> well, jeff zeleny who is the white house correspondent for us has been hearing from the u.s. officials. who saying that a signing will acknowledge quote progress that is made so far. and will also commit to a pledge to keep the momentum going forward. this official said he didn't want to get ahead of what's going to happen. we don't know whether there will be actual details in any declaration that's signed. to give you a comparison, when it was the end of april the meeting between kim jong un and the south korea president. they did sign a declaration. which specifically pledged to denuclearize the korean peninsula and seek an end to the korean war. there were specifics. if there are no specifics in this one it will be a little less than everybody hoped for. and we'll have to see what

happens. we don't know yet we know what we have reported. and obviously there will be something the table is set. the pens a there and flowers are on. and waiting for the principles to come out. >> there has to be something. there's been a big give by the united states to this point. giving parody. north korean flags side be side. this was very high on the wish list for the despot regime for generations. so the president has to bring something home, does he not? >> you think so. we have spoken to many experts who have been covering this and dealing with this. whether on the government level or expert level. around the region on the allies level. and they have all said what we need to see from north korea is a verbal and written commitment that they are going to denuclearize. the secretary of state said that

we want complete verifiable. that's the keyword. verifiable. irreversible disarmament. we will not let up on the pressure of sanctions. wenow that's what the united states wants. at the very least i'm told by perktss that what one could hope to expect is that they will continue to pledge to keep their freeze on the intercontinental baa li ballistic missile test. to hammer out final deals over the next year or more. also what the americans should want is to hear a declaration from the north koreans as to what they have. what are the missile capability the nuclear capability. are they willing to verify them. to have the international community and all the others verify the status and the location of the weapons. and the weapons systems. that would be minimum. let's see what they get out of it. obviously getting together is a

good first step. it's better to talk than talk about war. it's better to talk about peace. and i will say of all the substance that's come out of the conversation you have had a little bit of sort of impromptu in front of the camera talk. saying it's tremendous. you had substance from kim jong un who said it's taken a lot to get us to this. the obstacles were very high. and the past quote practices and prejudices of the other side have been very difficult to over come. we are here. you can see for them anyway history is playing a huge part in getting them to this meeting. also, kim jong un has been now le j legitimized on the international stage. >> you have to define the prejudices. this is a murderous regime. that completely stifles the freedoms of its people. the size of the state of

mississippi. 25 million people the average earns are less than $2,000. that's something that president trump is going to have to deal with. thank you very much for your perspective. let's bring in global affairs analyst. on foreign relations. max boot. couldn't have a better guest for this tonight. thank you for joining us. all right so first of all, in term of expectation and the reality. how do they meet up so far? >> i would say you have seen a process of expectations from very high to very low. over the course of the last few months. remember in april donald trump was tweeting that basically that north korea had already agreed to denuclearize which is not the case. and the major spat where he called it off. and the it was a back on again.

and the north korean wanted the meeting. donald trump understood the price of getting the meeting he had to reset expectations and not talk about the libya model of complete disarmament and not talk about there was going to be a massive concession by north korea. and so basically he rese expectations to be essentially this is going to be a meet and greet. and this will be the start of a long process. when you set expectations so low they are barely half an inch of the floor you can meet them. and expect they meet them. but they won't meet the high expectations he laid out when he initially announced the summit. >> we have a policy and a political consideration. first the policy. it seems as though what the trump administration is trying to get is something that approximates the iran deal that is tore up and said it wasn't

worth the paper it was where i happen on. >> isn't that ironic? in fact trump will be extraordinarily lucky if he gets from north korea a deal as tough as the one that president obama got from iran. and this was the same deal of course that donald trump has trashed as the worsteal ever. ad some weakness it's actually a strong deal in many respects where the iranians had to get up 98% of the material. demobilize two third of the center fusions. and accept an inspections regime. is north korea going to do as much? maybe. it seems doubtful. if trump can't get as much as obama got. how does he claim it's the greatest d all time? which he'll say no matter what. >> you're new to "prime time." here's the rule. you can always disagree with me. it's fine. just for the sake of argument.

here is an argument. >> i'm not shy about disagreeing. >> i know. >> fire away. >> under obama administration, the hard right crushed him for reaching out to cuba. to suggest he would meet with leaders who are considered despot without preconditions. how can they swallow trump coming home if only with a signed declaration with a promise on it to keepng? >> i think it's fair to say that the hard right and the republican party in general has basically given up 98% of their principles. and their principle is follow donald trump where ever he leads. when he announced the summit they called it stroke of genius. he called it offwas a strokeof . he won't get a lot of push back from the right. if it had been clinton for example. who was having a meeting without

preconditions with a dictator of the one of the most vicious countries. >> you don't think he has to come home with anything? >> i think he has to come home with something. i'm not a donald trump supporter. i'm telling you what the base of the republican party thinks and they will accept whatever trump says. you saw him this weekend he was trashing canada. saying that with his aide saying the prime minister has a place in hell reserved for him. and there's little push back from that with the republican party. they won't push back on this. i think as an outside neutral observer you have to say with all the build up and hype of the summit and the fact donald trump is providing legitimacy to kim jong un and he is essentially putting north korea on an equal footing with the united states. which is something dictators have long wanted to do. and sanctions are being relaxed now by china and other countries. in return for that trump has to

get serious concessions and we need to remember what he promised which is late april the way to judge the summit is north korea going to denuclearize? don't let him twist the words. don't let him set a new standard. hold him to what he said. are they going to denuclearization. >> the secretary of said the same thing. our goal is nothing short of co. the g 7 summit. two theories. one is he went up to intentionally blow it up. to show nobody is safe. and he'll make the deals hepts to make. and ally is whoever he says is an ally. and so kim would know i make on. the other theory is he got upset because the played the same game trump does. came out of a meeting with one disposition and said what was self-serving in front of the camera and he got upset and

insulted people doesn't like. which do you accept? >> the second interpretation is the one i find more compelling. it amuses me when people try to ascribe a grand strategy to trumpnd he's playing a chess game. when thevidence indicates he just gets up in the morning and often very early and starting venting and tweeting like crazy. and letting people know his feelings for the moment. and he doesn't think very far ahead. clearly he was very upset with canada. because canada and our european allies are not willing to take it lying down when imposes tariffs on them. they are retaliating with their own. and donald trump is all about an america first policy. he can't stand it if canada pursues a canada first policy. he doesn't like it when people disagree with him or push back.

he gets angry. and he lashed out in ways that are ir rational and self-destructive. trudea did nothing to justify saying there's a place in hell for him. that's crazy talk. that seems to be the message that trump wants to send. and i would -- i'm very skeptical of the notion there's a premeditation that will send a message to kim jong un. no way. he basically thinks like ten minutes ahead. this is an attempt to after the fact spin to explain his tirade against the close american ally. >> if your right we know what's happening right now. donald trump is meeting with his adviser saying we have to get something on this piece of paper that will look like a win to the people at home. max boot, thank you so much. we're watching this now. we have been promised a signing. by the president of the united

thank you very much everybody. >> absolute i. >> let's bring in just to recap. if people are coming in now. the second major handshake foe to op we have seen of the day. the president and the leader of north korea. just signed a declaration. the president said it is a very big. very comprehensive. he was asked whether or not it will be about denuclearization. he said we're going start that process very quickly. very very quickly. he also said it will be made public soon. we'll get the actual details of it. chairman kim said that this declaration means we are leaving the past behind and the world will see a major change. and express gratitude to the president. the president responded by

saying he and kim now have a special bond. after spending intensive time together. it's going to come out. we're going to see what is on it. certainly president trump doing what he does best. speaking in about how amazing it has been. >> that's exactly right. we are going to hopefully see it. they'll distribute it. that would be the norm. they did the same thing after the declaration was signed in between the two koreas. they will do that. since he said they were going to do it. they will be good to see the detail of what they agreed to. again they both sat down the two leader of the two countries and affixed the signatures to this letter this declaration. that the president calls comprehensive. sp more really warm words between them. and obviously chairman kim was not used to that sort of thing. he spoke less than trump did.

all the words of president trump were translated by kim's i don't know which translater. it was the woman. that is the u.s. translator. and of course more handshakes and more back pats and arm pats and off they went. president trump said he'll be holding a press conference. at 2:30. that's in about 45 minutes. so about to hear more very soon. >> it has to be a letter of intent. because there hasn't been the time to hammer out any specifics. the question is whether or not it will be found satisfying. that will be predicated on what comes next, yes? >> sorryes and no. we don't know whether their people had hammered out a list of things they were willing to sign. before the leader came out. we have been told there's been a lot of work going into this. letter this declaration. so we don't know.

>> all right, jeff zeleny. the two men going their own way. we understand that the president was asked, would you invite kim to the white house and he said yes. is that your understanding? >> he did, indeed, chris. the president's exact words were, absolutely, i will, to the question would he invite kim jong-un to washington? that's what he said in the rose garden, when shinzo abe was visiting, he was asked if he would invite kim jong-un if the meeting went well. this is one of the next steps. we do not know if that would happen and what conditions would have to b met. interestingly, as we await the hard details of the signing document there, the president said last week, this would not be a photo opportunity. he's right about that. this was a substantive meeting, the fact they met. but this was a rolling series of

photo opportunities, intended to design -- still going on, to show this relationship, he believes, is going be a real one here. still important to wait the exact details of what they signed because they have not been released yet. and part of the show going on is to sign it with this fanfare. we'll have to see what they signed when the white house relesionr releases it. you heard him saying i would invite kim to the white house. i discovered he's a talented man who loves his country very much. you know, tricky sentimentalties here for a president of the united states, when addressing the head of regime that is murderous and completely oppressive of freedoms in his country. >> first, it's proven what we've seen again and again, that the

poft t president of the united states can be a bully and a pussycat. now, he's obviously flattering kim jong-un, like other leaders flatter him because this is also about getting the measure of each other. the attempt to create a relationship out of a binational relationship that's mired in mistrust and bad feelings over the last 70-odd years, with a few speaks, when there were times, for instance, when president clinton did the agreed frameway in '94. and president bush six-party talks and the opening with pyongyang in 2008. you tried with president obama and that didn't work. and now, we have this attempt. they have to try to forge personal relationships. you can see that's what

president trump was trying to do. he's more adept at it. he's done it a lot during his business career. kim jong-un, slightly less adept, but following along with smiles and noddings and willingly walked around by the president and stopped in front of various cameras and the like. but kim jong-un has scored a victory. if he gets an iitation to the white house, that's icing on the cake. >> the president will get points back home with his own party and hard-line conservatives seeming in control here. strength, that projected power is important politically, in terms of optics. it reminds a little bit of obama with cuba. the stakes are so much different with north korea as potentially nuclear with its capabilities. but there was so much criticism, jeff zeleny, of obama with how do you deal with cuba with their

human rights conditions, how will the party regard the takeaway with this from trump and kim? >> chris, that's a great point. i think as you said, this is a nuclear power, a whole other level there. but the president, if you could hear it during one of those photo opportunities after the signing, he was asked if he talked to kim jong-un about otto warmbi warmbier, the college student who died in the hands of the regime. and the president did not answer that question. we do not know if human rights were discussed today. last week, the president said he would bring up human rights. this week, there was a question if that would happen. clearly, this is not necessarily a moment for lecturing. that's not president trump's style, to lecture in public. our reporting will have to show and bear out if they talked about human rights at all.
