we are live from cnn world he headquarters in atlanta. i'm george howell. the news room starts right now. >> the u.s. government has a plan to reunite children who have been separated from their parents. the no tolerance policy went into effect in april. it was only a few hours ago. the department of homeland security released these new numbers. more than 2,500 children were separated since that policy started. at least 522 children have been reunited with their children.
2:01 am
2,005 2,053 parents are still waiting. they say they are working to reunite them with their families. we do stress here these reunions won't happen quickly. they will only happen once the legal proceedings are completed. [ crowd chanting ] >> take a look at the scene there. protests are happening at different immigration detention centers around the country. the one you're seeing here, many people came together. the protesters came together and are commenting throughout the country. [ crowd chanting ] >> another scene here. this crowd shouting at a border patrol group. physically blocking a bus loaded with children leaving from a migrant detention center in
2:02 am
2:03 am
>> one called it boys and parents. >> border patrol agents who were concerned and very confused. one of them was congresswoman jackie spear. listen to what she said. >> in terms of reunification i have zero understanding that anyone has been reunited with their parents. i think these children have been sent off. they may have an a number when they go through the department of health and human services they get a different number. so the ability to match them i think becomes much more difficult. so i don't believe they have been reunified. you have got to show me proof. >> the u.s. president did weigh in on the immigration issue. he sited his immigration policy. >> president trump addressed the
2:04 am
nevada republican convention on saturday where he was supposed to spend his time president trump touched on a number of unpopular choices to immigration. the speech came against the backdrop of national outrage. president trump though defiant against a wave of national outcry blaming congressional inaction and previous administrations for allowing the problem to get so bad. >> it's brutal. they want to do nothing. you know what's going on. your political people. you love the world. the politics. some times you probably say why do i reich it when you think about it when dealing with a group of people that don't want to improve anything, if i said if we gave them everything they wanted they would say don't

approve it. they think immigration, being weak on the border, which is therefore allowing tremendous crime to come into our country, they think that that's a good issue for them. i don't think being weak on the border, i don't think it's a good issue. >> president trump talking about his meeting with kim jong un saying that he has made progress towards denuclearization. they haven't taken place since their historic summit. president trump did however make mention of dean heller. cnn las vegas. >> all right. thank you for the reporting. now to steven, the chief diplomatic correspondent live

via skype. it is good to have you on the show. let's start with the plan to reunite. is this a real lugs or the government quickly trying to mop up a mess? >> they are trying to mop up a mess. that's better than leaving the mess there. trump is using this. the attack the democrats were supposedly being weak on the border. i am strong on the border and that's what he is trying to push. i think it is less to him than the politics. >> again, the president is breaking this down to a democrats weak on the border. trump republicans strong on the border. he spoke about that. we'll talk about that on the other side. >> if we did that everybody
2:07 am
come. if we did that you would have -- you're right. the word is overrun. we would have millions and millions of people pouring through our country with all of the problems that would cause with crime and schools and you would have millions. all i would have to do is say yes, we want to take care of everybody. we want everybody to come. do what you want to come. if they see any weakness they will come by the millions. >> thwe see protests building, hear the sounds of children separated. all of this on full display. does it help or hurt the president heading into the midterms? >> we'll, we'll have to see. i think it helps him. that's a very cynical thing to say. the president seems to be obsessed with weakness. the worst thing you could call him would be weak. he uses his own notion of facts. in fact if you look at the facts
2:08 am
a number of crimes and then immigrants certainly illegal immigrants are lower than among the native population. that's simple fact. you have to do it with sense of law and decency for other human beings. that is what has outraged people. it is trying to get out of it. it is trying to get out of it in a way that doesn't hurt republican chances in november. that is the cynicism. >> it is interesting to use the word. it has been used by a definition used by insects or animals.
2:09 am
>> yes. that's the problem. these are words being used fwi president. they are in some ways people have called them dem gojic words. he seems to believe in them. one is never sure when he speaks like that whether it is coming out of his soul, out of his heart or whether he sees them as buttons to push for his legal end. >> democrats are seizing on the issue but politically speaking many republican voters do back the president's approach to immigration. the question, are democrats being optimistic here? >> well, again, it's hard to say. november is quite a long way away. we'll have other issues and other problems. it seems as if they do have a reasonable chance of winning control of the house, a doubt the senate though they will try
2:10 am
but even losing one house will change the nature of the trump presidency. if you remember president obama got almost everything important done in the first two years when the democrats controlled both houses. afterwards they blocked much of what he wanted to do as much as donald trump is saying democrats want do. if you remember back to the obama period republicans refused to pass many many things that many republicans cared about. their job was to make obama fail. i think the democrats perhaps unfortunately have learned the same lesson. >> very quickly here, the administration has reportedly been looking into additional space for housing presumably preparing for the long game here.
2:11 am
does it leave the people we have been seeing in the images, the people stuck in a political limbo or will all of the protest, pressure make a difference? >> well, i think the reaction is already making a difference. i mean it's not just democrats here. you lots of mothers and fathers who are upset by what they are seeing. you a lot of confusion among the border guards who are try to go do their job. the important thing is to stick to the law, stick to the protections that all people have to use the courts if necessary and to keep up the political pressure on any government to do the right thing. >> we appreciate your time and perspective. we'll stay in touch with you. >> thanks, george. public anger over the president's actions is being felt by his own staff.

sarah sanders tweeted she was kicked out of a restaurant on friday night solely because she worked for mr. trump. the owner of the red hen restaurant defended her actions to the washington post. she said she asked sanders and her party to leave at the request of her staff and said she would do it again. sanders father, the former governor of the state of arkansas was outraged. he accused the restaurant of bigotry. it is some are calling racist. it shows gang members he labeled as the campaign committee to take back the house. pelosi is the highest ranking in the house of representatives. you're watching cnn newsroom. the city of atlanta taking a stand on the immigration crisis. we speak to atlanta's major who
