states and all around the world. i'm randi k >> newsroom starts right now. around the world, good day to you. we start with parents and children still held right now in these immigration detention centers in the united states. there's a great deal of confusion about how r if they will be reunited even after promises and plans to do so. >> and this after u.s. president donald trump's zero tolerance policy separated them and he's sticking to that stampbs. some day he tweeted we cannot allow all these part-time to invade our country. he added they should be deported immediate ly with, quote, no judges or court cases. >> and the image you see here are the people right now caught in this political cross fire. more than 2,000 children there

separated from their families and kept in processing centers like what you're seeing here along the u.s. border with mexico. democratic senator elizabeth warren visited one such center in mccallen, texas, visibly shaken. she spoke about what she saw and heard. >> reporter: i saw a 6-month-old baby, little girls, little boys. there are mothers with their babies and with small children. female units are together. if it's a very small child, but. had little girl who is are 12 years old are taij taken away from the rest of their families and held separately or little boys and they are all opt cob crete floors in cages.

immigration must be based on merit. we need people who will will help make america great again. the suggestion that immigrants should not be placed pvr a judge is not something we have heard from the president before. something likely to draw criticism from system across the aisle. further we should point out that the president has not done much to clarify how he wants congress to act on immigration. just like we the president essentially told them to not worry about working on a sort of more moderate bill in the for weeks. telling hill to punt until after the hexs. then the president tweeted democrats telling them to stop resisting and to help fix this problem. there's supposed to be a vote on that more moderate immigration bill this upcoming week.

being detained. this from an aclu lawsuit that was filed on friday. >> mean. while the aclu has inadequate medical care. the contributors to seven deaths between 2015 and 201. let's talk more about this now with michael coughman, an attorney for the aclu o of southern california live via skype in los angeles. that's for your time. hets start with the kro, tell us more about the situation of attorneys having trouble getting access to people in the detention centers and the claims that people are being held in cells for nearly 24 hours straight. any progress being made on these fronts? >> i can speak to what's been going on in southern california where this is what we know.

june 4th the federal government began transferring immigration et detainees to a federal prison clmpbs. they are now hundredsing house of detainees and for weeks they were held incommune ka do with no access to the outside world and no opportunity to contact an attorney and no way to contact family members. like wise, people on the outside had no way us to get in contact with them. we had attorneys going to the detention center asking to be let inside and turned away at the gates. they in h no way to call to get in contact. so we had people held for weeks at a time being held in commune ka do. >> you're saying they are being died due process, which is in line with one of the most recent tweets from president trump. he tweeted the headline that many people are looking at as suggesting that attorneys like yourself, judges and courts should be sidelined and immigrants kicked out.

>> there's a lot of changes that reeked a lot of havoc for immigrants here. one thing they cannot change is the due process cause of the constitution. >> i have to interrupt you. isn't that happening? you just explained the fact that attorneys are having trouble reaching them. isn't it happening right now? >> sadly it's true. that's why we brought a lawsuit to challenge the unconstitutional denial of the attorney access. they required the trump administration to provide dough process requirements that is access for attorneys to speak with their clients both in person and by phone. >> and what are your feelings about this announcement from the government that there's a new plan in place. a plan to reunite families from

what you have seen of that plan, is that a sound approach or do you have out ises about it? >> i heard nothing out of the government recently that inspires much confidence. if the plan for reuniting families is o unite them in another prison, that's not a solution at all. the trump administration wants to solve this problem, they need to reunite family members. they need to come up with a system that allows people to remain together in a humane environment. not in prisons. >> michael, as people are able to get access, these cases that you and other attorneys will take on, these cases, many cases take even longer than that. >> in some cases, yes. in this particular case, we were

able to seek it and it was granted. now at least we have some base. ic access to the detainees that are incarcerated in the victorville prison. some cases take longer. and it's so important to keep voicing their concerns and let representatives et know and put the pressure to. stop these unconditional take ticks and for them to follow the l law. >> a broad brosh was painted over all the theme that have been caught up that they are rapist and drug dealers. there are people seeking achi lumbar. there are people who crossed the border illegally. are you -- to seek asylum, are they caught up in the web.

made by the trump administration's zero tolerance policy. one migrant from el salvador knows firsthand what it feels like to be separated from her child. >> her 5-year-old daughter was taken from her when she arrived at the border two years ago. she told her story to cnn. >> reporter: it's hard to think of being locked up and separated from your child. for this woman, it's a nightmare she doesn't have to imagine. >> translator: it's very painful. not only for us as other mothers, but also for our kids. >> reporter: she shared her story on the condition of anonymity. her case is pending in court. it begins in 2016 when a death threat from a local gang sent her running for her life. after traveling for almost a month, she reached the texas border looking for asylum and instead ended up losing her daughter. she was locked up in detention while the girl was take ton a

separate shelter for unaccompanied minors. >> translator: i told them they couldn't do that. we have to be together. then she told me if i didn't let them take her, they were going to deport us both. >> what was going through your mind when you realized that your daughter was being take b away from you? >> translator: the truth is i thought i wasn't going to see her again. >> reporter: she says it took two weeks to locate the child and three weeks before they connected by phone. >> what was that conversation like, that first conversation with your daughter? >> i would say my daughter, are you okay? and she would say yes. i would say with god first, we're going to see each other again. and she would just say yes. >> after a month, the 5-year-old girl was turned over to a relative in the u.s. her mother was released a few weeks later. under the obama administration, family separates were not widespread, but not unheard of either.

it's the courts that could rule in this case that it's illegal to detain parents and children before they get to a port of entry and claim asylum. so the idea here is you won over the courts. you bipassed them and it goes further because trump also said yesterday that you will bipass congress. what you will do is undermine immigration bills and say it's not worth passing these now. the idea here is there should be only one source of power in the u.s. government. that's the trump administration. whatever the cost we see from this immigration policy. >> let's just listen to what two lawmakers had to say when they were told they isn't have permission to kppgs a new jersey detention center. let's bring that up. ♪ >> yes, this is america. this isn't moscow.

>> so we are seeing lawmakers turned away from the detention centers. one of them saying this is america, not moscow. what's going on here? on what basis are these detention centers allowed to prevent the access of lawmakers and of the media. >> there are certain provisions, which regulate when you're holding minors in shelters. in this case detention centers. you may not be able to talk too to these because they may be. vulnerable children. there could be health issues about access. . that's one reason the children are being vaccinated. these aren't health and safety reasons. that's officials who are absenteeable to the trump administration. don't want journalists to see what is. two weeks ago when they allowed

this aggressive approach towards immigration. it's underestimating his people or is it now have rally his base? >> some people support trump. the question is whether it's many. it's the strategy of the key white house adviser. it is probably the strategy shared by attorney general jeff sessions as well as trump, which is if et we continue to crack down no matter what the legal issues are, no matter the cost to children and parents, we'll win in november's election elections. which means, by the way, they are not going to apologize. they are photo going to back down over what happened in recent weeks. connect that to the second issue. they think if they win in congress in november that their belief that the courts are not important, that you can go around congress is justified. in other words, these elections now are more that be returning and it's even more than the immigration issue.

expect rainfall. the impacts have been significant. flooding and we have seen damage done to many communities across places such as this. folks have come out of bed and looked outside and see what was essentially the street commuting down now turning into a raging river. and when it all tapers off what you have a tremendous amount of debris strewn about and that paks it dangerous for a lot of people. situations have played out over and over again. this is the time of year we expect a lot of rainfall. some areas of china have been hard pressed to get it. other areas are getting too much. you take a look at a month by month breakdown in the city of hong kong, look at which month peak here's. the month of jaumay and june an july, you see the highest months in total there coming in over the next several months.

bangladesh. >> let's talk more with richard we're, a fellow for the asia division of human rights watch. thank you for your time today. let's talk about the amount of land available for rohingya. it's already limited. it's suppose d to be tempt operation. that's surely at risk during monsoon opinion the real situation on the ground for people there. >> as you say, the amount of land is extraordinary limited. and i think one of the things that people fail to realize is that over half a million of these people are living in the most congested refugee camp in the world. in some spaces in these camps, people have less than a meter, a square moerlt of space for hemss. and often times people are living in cram and crowded single spaces.

rohingya population and the government of bangladesh. there's been a enough of sites that have been identified in the area. these refugees can do move to that are far safer, not nearly as at high risk for landslides, individuals have already died. it's important that the spaces that are available that those be used and that the individuals and refugees be moved to the sites or they. >> the second part about relocation. a another move for this ethnic minority. surely there's an added emotional toll for people who already went to great lengths to escape ethnic cleansing in myanmar. >> absolutely. this is a population that's been subjected to the most brutal campaign by the myanmar military and security forces. we're talking about widespread

rape, arson, murder, many of the refugees that we have spoken to have born physical scar, full pod barns. in addition to the psychological scars that they now bare and ware from these traumas. and the reality is that there are not enough services available to provide adequate services now just for the physical welfare but the psychological welfare of these individuals. so any movement. you can image the range of population being very concerned about being moved again. one of the things that has been concern i concerning with the range of population has consistently imposed is the movement to the island which the bangladesh government proposed. this is something that's unsusable situation. it's prone to flooding and will
