2:01 am
we want to welcome our viewers here around the states and around the world. i'm george howell. cnn "newsroom" starts right now. at 5:00 a.m. on the u.s. east coast, the latest stop on the president's tour, he is in scotland. mr. trump is spending time there. the weekend at one of his golf resorts. this ahead of a summit with the russian president vladimir putin in helsinki, finland, that meeting became a little more complicated. on friday, the u.s. justice department unloaded a bomb shell, indicting 12 russian military officers, accusing them of hacking into computers and the campaign of hillary clinton in 2016. u.s. officials sayer that goal was to hurt clinton's chances of being elected. president trump routinely dismisses the investigation as a witch hunt, without merit. still he says he will bring it up when he speaks with vladimir
2:02 am
putin on monday. jessica snyder has more details of the environment. >> reporter: 12 russian hackers are charged with hacking into the hillary clinton campaign and stealing u.s. voter data during the 2016 election. >> we know according to dime the goal of the conspirators was to have an impact in the election. >> reporter: the indictment details how the russian targeted more than 300 people associated with campaign committees and the hillary clinton campaign. this was the e-mail chairman john podesta received telling him to click a passworld. this is known as spear phishing. he did. prosecutors allege these russian officers hacked into several accounts, steaming thousands of e-mails is there they hacked into computer networks and installed malicious software
2:03 am
that allows them to capture key strokes, take screen shots and remove data from those computers. >> and to distribute the stolen e-mails, the indictments say they registered the d.c. leaks and gucifer 2.0, and funding their scheme through crypto currencies like bit cohn. >> defendants falsely claimed d.c. leaks was a group of american hackers and gucifer 2.0 was a lone romanian hacker. >> reporter: he stressed none of the americans targeted knew they were talking with russians. >> the conspirators corresponded with several americans through the internet. there is no allegation in this indictment that the americans knew they were corresponding with russian intelligence officers. >> reporter: but the indictment does detail the russian's
2:04 am
contact with several emergency including a request for stolen documents from a candidate of u.s. congress whose identity has not been disclosed. it explains the officers posing at gucifer 2.0 and a person close to the trump campaign the language of the messages revealed in the indictment matches the twitter messages previously released by roger stone. stone has admitted he communicated with gucifer 2.0 but denies he knew about the hack. >> i am not involved with a conspiracy with the russians or no one else. will is no evidence to the contrary. >> reporter: the indictment alleges the russians spearfished and hacked e-mail accounts on the same day trump said this. >> russia, if are you listening, you hope you are able find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. i think you will probably be
2:05 am
rewarded mightily by our press. >> reporter: and the indictment appears to identify wikileaks for the first time as organization one, saying it released the e-mails and documents stolen by the russians and july 22nd, 2016, right before the start of the democratic national convention. the deputy attorney general briefed president trump on the charges before he left for his overseas trip and today stressed politics should stay out of what is a serious, legal and national security matter. >> we need to work together to hold the perpetrators accountable. we need to keep moving forward to preserve our values, protect against future interference and defend america. >> jessica, thank you. roger stone, who we just heard from in jessica's reporting appears to be the unnamed person indicted, rather cited in the indictment -- cited in the indictment, having contact with an online persona used by the
2:06 am
hackers. here's what he told our colleague chris cuomo. >> i just don't know just don't own the person that you were, the persona as they call it, that you were corresponding with were the russians, why won't you own it? >> because i still don't know that it is true to a certainty. >> afternoon though you never heard before any of this there is proof that it was developed for this purpose as stated in this indictment? >> i think we have been around about this before. i think our intelligence agencies have been commit sized. i would like to see this proven in a court of law. i would admit they have an extremely compelling ap detailed dime. but it's still an accusation. >> roger stone appears to be the unnamed person cited in this indictment. of course, we heard him speaking to my colleague chris cuomo. here's what some lawmakers had to say about it.
2:07 am
>> i have been concerned about the president's ad hoc style of going into meetings and particularly when you deal with vladimir putin on the world stage for 20 years, former kgbing a. he will come in with facts, maps, i'm afraid the president can be taken advantage of. >> the witch hundredt is about his collusion the witch hunt he is talking about is the fact that he clued colluded. in doing that, there is no evidence to suggest otherwise. i have neff said russia interfered in the election. these indictments would certainly support that hypothesis. at the same time, i think the whole reason it was started was so that you would have an independent investigation into a
2:08 am
presidential campaign, yet the indictments today could have come from a dad or an attorney general because they have nothing to do with the conclusion narrative. >> so that's the penalties from u.s. lawmakers, despite some calls, the white house says it will go on as planned. so now let's get the view live from russia. our mathew chance is rather live following the story in helsinki. with this new bombshell this new indictment, what is the reaction to all of this from russia? >> well, as expected, the russian categorically have adopted that position in the past and now and shortly after the dimes were made the russian foreign ministry issued statement, using some of the language president trump uses.
2:09 am
washington is circulating old fake news, president trump called eight witch hunt. the russians have used that term as well but they didn't use nit this statement. they said it was instead a heap of conspiracy themes. the purpose says it's to spoil the american-russian sum. there are calls for it to be called off by president trump. it's going to go ahead as we understand it. it will be taking place in the presidential pa lls a in the center of the -- palace in the center of the capital. it will mean it's a much more confrontational conversation between the two presidents. the way the russians have categorized it as something that has to do with political conspiracy to make donald trump look bad and undermine vladimir
2:10 am
putin on the stage, indicates they have the same point of view when it comes to election meddling. far from the confrontational issue this could be something that president trump and president putin agree on. that's a very interesting situation to be in. >> of course, bring us more in preparation for this meeting. we will have the reaction from it. >> the u.s. president suggests it's a made-up witch hunt. here's what he said when the latest indictment was announced. >> i think we are being hurt very badly by the -- i would call it a witch hunt, i would call at this time rigged pitch hunt. >> still he can't ignore the mount evidence of russian
2:11 am
interference in 2016 so he says he will bring it up. take listen. >> i know you will ask, will we be talking about meddling? i will absolutely bring that up. i don't think you will have any gee i did it, you got me? there won't be a perry mason here, i will absolutely firmly ask the question. >> the twhous summed it up, releasing this statement, today's charges include no allegation of knowing involvement by anyone of the campaign and no allegations that the alleged hacking affected the election results. it goes on to say this is consistent with what we have been saying aalong. our correspondent live this hour in brussels, belgium. steven, i am sure you have been following these events as mr.
2:12 am
trump pre pa irs to meet with mr. putin. does it put more pressure on the president, given what we all know what has been said about this investigation overall? >> it does put more pressure on him. it also makes his constant statement that he had nothing to do with anything and it didn't matter and so on, much harder to take. it also makes it harder for putin to say i knew nothing about it and for trump to say that in the past. the fact is putin, this would not have happened without his approval. this was the military election that got involved. trump wants to move beyond this of course, he doesn't want anything to look like his election victory was tainted, nor does he like this investigation by mueller. this is obviously something putin never has to deal with. he doesn't have to deal with a
2:13 am
congress or a justice department looking into his election campaign, so mr. trump will go into helsinki. i'm sure he will raise this, mr. putin will say, i had nothing to do with it. trump will say, let's move on to other things and promise not to med him in anyone's election, which will mean nothing. then i think they will go on questions of more justty, syria, nuclear arms control, ukraine, so on. >> i guess you raised the issue. will the president be aserted in defense of the u.s. and its intelligence agencies? do you confirm or will he be pass ive on it? this meeting one on one between president trump and president putin, it has many allies and republican colleagues concerned. what's the plus-minus of these two men speaking privately? >> well the president has wanted
2:14 am
to do this with vladimir putin for years. i mean, certainly during the campaign. he wants to reset relation, he thinks he can get on with putin. they are two strong guys that are decisive. mr. trump fancies himself a great negotiator, able look into people's eyes and understand their vulnerabilities. so that's the plus side. the president wants to do it. fine, there will be translators there, notes will be taken, it's not like it will be completely private, private. but at the same time people are worried in his pride and sometimes arrogance or self-confidence, trump will make concession, no one argued he's not a clever man and those could include anyone can guess, suspending military exercises to europe or deciding to pull down
2:15 am
the number of american troops facing russia or nato in poland for the baltic states, trump believes in making jess chours, that's what he did with kim jong-un, sometimes when he suspended military, he never spoke to the pentagon about it or the south koreans. he just did it. so that's the kind of thing we worry about. oddly people are relieved that john bolton who is a hard line guy against russia and a national security adviser, will be there ideally to keep mr. trump from giving away anything important. we don't really know. >> look, you pointed this out and there are a lot they can talk about, everything from syria, north korea, certainly nuclear weapons. those are big issues. i want to get back to this
2:16 am
important issue playing out, the issue how the president takes this on, passively, aggressively, how he chooses to take this on, does it embolden russia to do it again or does it make russia reconsider? is this a very important water shed moment? well, i think it is important. dan coates is the head of american intelligence has been warning that red lights are blinking in terms of cyber security. the people attacking america on cyber security are many. they are prominently russia, china, north korea. so trump has never really taken intelligence that seriously. he's always poo-pooed american russian meddling. i think it's getting harder and
2:17 am
harder to do that. will he get aggressive? it's hard to say. from his comments he doesn't expect him to do very far. to get a promise, i don't think it takes us very far. there will be questions, then, perhaps, putin might change his view. it is also possible as in france, where after it was clear, russians meddled in the american election the french are very much on their guard and incidents of an impact of russian meddling in the french election were considerably less. russia's meddling now in north macedonia as we are calling i, it's meddling in greece. it's trying to interfere with
2:18 am
the referendum that would change macedonia's name ap then get it into nato and get it into the eu. this is where russia is meddling. russia is paying for local language, broadcasting and magazines at internet servers in places like slo crockia avakia a and poland to divide european countries from one another. this is meddling, too, i suspect trump won't get into that with putin. >> it will be interesting to see how this plays out. thank you for your time and perspective. the u.s. president walking back incendiary comments about the british prime minister. sort of. we'll explain that. i'm captain obvious and hotels.com

2:22 am
it is clear her majesty the queen is not about moving a politician along. the queen ushered him with a slight of hand to inspect the guards at windsor castle, twitter didn't miss a step, it's not difficult, walk along the line being pleased. trump has been fascinated with the royals for some time. in 1981, he rumored prince charles and his new bride princess diana planned to buy multi-million dollar place in trump tower. the reporter wants details, trump responded he could not confirm or deny it. years later in 1994, trump spread a similar rumor prince charles and diana separately joined as charter members at his club in mar-a-lago. a palace spokesman at the time called it complete montana sense. then there were comments he

wrote in his book. he wrote, his only regret in the women department is he never had the opportunity to court lady diana spencer. the boston globe reports princess diana thought trump was creepy. shortly after an odd color interview, trump praised diana for her looks. >> i said lady dihad super model beauty. >> reporter: in 2012, many came to kate middleton's defense after the paparazzi shot her sun bathing topless in france. instead, trump tweeted she had only herself to blame, saying who wouldn't take her pick and make lots of money if she does the nude sun bathing thing, no surprise he met with the duke or duchess or meghan markle and her newlywed husband prince harry. in 2016, markle made her feels well none. >> with as misogynistic trump is

2:25 am
france's of france at the field of gold, there have been certain court sis observed in most diplomatic occasions. this was certainly not one of them. it's become notorious. there has been a great deem offed a vs. publicity about it. there is no question the interview with the son was an unbelievable gaffe because clearly he knew what he was doing. equally, he appears vf thought that giving an interview to an anti-eu paper owned by murdock, which is also tabloid, not particularly highly regarded by britain's intelligencia and also making a personal attack on teresa may and boosting boris johnson, who he apparently is particularly fopd of. all of this is a crazy way how
2:26 am
the nation responded well. well, they responded very much in different camps the daily maim, for example, believes that his behavior was extremely rational. the times has been extremely kwik critical. the telegraph has been mixed and anyone watching this simply gets the impression that somebody is rather extraordinarily out of control. i mean, you were quoting some and it just shows if you made comments years ago, that i can come back to haunt you. you are quoting some extremely embarrassing things that donald trump has said in past years about members of the royal fami family. the queen met him with an absolutely charming sometime. there is no doubt the cold stream guard and quad drankle- d

quadrangle and our first american princess, you notice the raptor the trump and queen seemed strangely out of step. >> that tells one he simply doesn't and won't rehearse and the likes of vladimir putin will have taken notice of this whole rather extraordinary extravaganza, that we have been subjected to, that had mittedly has had a certain the at rickal pull. when you actually come down to wonder what it means to a relationship between two allies, it gives cause for enormous concern. >> very quickly, the relationship between these two nation, do you see this u.s. president's approach having a temporary impact or a long lasting impact? to that special relationship between the uk and u.s.?

general election that is set in less than two weeks time. in a few hours time, both pro trump and anti-trump rally are set to start in the united kingdom. the u.s. president's visit on friday. at one point police had to close off try fifalgo square. because it almost reached capacity. prime minister teresa may and president trump, the two held a joint news conference friday. mr. trump says he apologized following the comments that he made in an interview with the british tabloid "the sun." he slammed the british prime minister for how she is handling brexit negotiations. he tried to walk that back a bit saying the paper didn't include the glowing things he had to say about her. let's listen. >> i didn't criticize the prime minister. i have a lot of respect for the prime minister. unfortunately, there was a story
2:34 am
that was done, which was you know generally fine but it didn't put in what i said about the prime minister. i said tremendous things and fortunately, we tend to record stories now so we have it for your enjamaica. we record with reporters. it's called fake news. we solve a lot of problems. >> the president calling his own words there fake news. let's listen now to a political correspondent for "the independent" live this more in london. ben, there was obviously the interview that left a sting. then the next day mr. trump parades teresa may. what is your read with america's closest allie? >> i think that was what we called in the media a spectacular user, clearly criticizing one day and completely saying to her
2:35 am
whatever you do on brexit is fun with us the interview with the "sun" was very, very embarrassing with the prime minister. she is juggling here. the u.s. president, himself, to come out and say she made that less likely is very difficult for her. i think downie street will have grave concerns, should we say with that counterpart with mr. trump's team and what we saw was a clear rowing back and praising teresa may, saying they will take it. she is well within her rights to do that. in that accepts, in the ends, but that was an unprecedented i think interview in the "sun" in terms of the u.s. president openly criticizing the british council. overall, she would have very much loved to have not had that
2:36 am
interview, in the end, it was a bit of upset. >> i want to push forward with teresa may after pressure after a rough week dealing with the brexit. is the burden more on her to ensure the relationship with mr. trump and the u.s. is strong, especially with regard to securing trade? >> i'm not sure you can put a burden open her. i think the reactions that put these relationship at risk haven't come from the british side. we know mr. trump is dealing with the u.s. allies and this president on issues such as nato and defense and international m internationalism. his outlook is a lot more inward looking than recent presidents. officials in the you can fear is that we have, he is in the process of battling some of those alliances. i think during this trip, we
2:37 am
didn't see them materialize quite as mush as they would like. they were seeing teresa may said she didn't do that, at the end of the summit, they were embarrassingly warm there. previously, that makes her in the press conference yesterday, we saw her criticizing teresa may. i think what she wants to do, this is the neutral benefit in social security and the economy and trade and business of that special relationship. and also build a personal relationship with president trump him because i think a lot of his policy towards others seems to be taken how he goes through them personally. i think watching that and some of the comments he made about her. i do get the sense that personal relationship was improved. >> as we mentioned just a few minutes ago here in the show, there are anti-and pro-trump
2:38 am
rally, fortunate point out, given brexit, there are many people who appreciate president trump's comments on the issue of immigration. i want to get your sense here, what is the overall read of miss may's approach at handling mr. trump that caused a great deal of rift. do people see her standing up to him or cowering to him? >> it generally shows people are unhappy about the visit, with what they say they've welcomed the u.s. president. but at the same, is there is practicingmatically they understand things like security the need for teresa may. no doubt, many of the comments mr. trump has made, it's not very unpopular in britain. so hundreds of thousands of people were standing out in protest. i think what they understand is the need for it to go ahead. it's very, very different from the british public.
2:39 am
president trump will endure much of what he has done him they seem to want teresa may to be more critical we know they have a great relationship. i think teresa may has played the long game. he is avoiding the pressure for some reason. >> thank you so much for your time and perspective live for us in london. >> thank you. . members of the thy football team are now speaking out. >> all right, i am fine, i would like to thank all people for being worried. >> we are hearing from them, one
