the world. i'm rosemary church. this is cnn newsroom. for the second time in a week, a powerful earthquake rocked indonesian's resort islands. this one stronger and deadlier than the last. this was the scene in a store sunday evening, panic as part of the ceiling caved in. the epicenter of the quake was on the popular island of lombok. but tremors were feld in bali. 91 people are dead and hundreds others are injured. will ripley is following this story from hong kong. 91 people dead, and hundreds injured in the wake of this earthquake. what are you learning about the
11:02 pm
aftermath of this and the damage caused? >> this is a frightening scenario for so many people in bali and lombok, and those in 2004 when a tsunami earthquake killed 200,000 people. people were terrified, running up mountains. we're getting reports of people making a dash for higher ground. when the tsunami warning was canceled, there's people that are concerned and fearful right now. we have pictures coming in from one of the three, small tourist islands where there's evacuation effort under way. 1,000 tourists stranden on those islands. 200 were taken away so far. they have to get on boats to get to secure areas. it's a slow process. at last count, 800 people are waiting to be evacuated. the red cross has deployed dozens of teams. about 100 teams on the ground right now.
11:03 pm
140 teams en route, handing out everything from blankets and food and water and medical supplies, as well. with communication and power outages, continuing to be a major problem on the island, it's creating a difficult situation, not to mention the thousands of buildings that are damaged, collapsed or partially cla collapsed. emergency authorities are saying, the 91 people that were killed died because of pieces of buildings falling down on them. roofs collapsing, walls collapsing. indonesian is one of the most earthqua earthquake-bro earthquake-prone countries in the world. they struggle with the buildings that withstand this kind of shaking. >> the big worry now is more tremors hitting the region. as you explained, we know the indonesian government, working with local authorities, there in lombok and across the region, that the island the islands
11:04 pm
there. talk about how prepared the indonesian government is prepared in situations like this. >> because they had an earthquake just like this, a 6.4 magnitude quake, where dozens of people were killed, there's been emergency response teams on the ground. this was the larger quake, according to seismologists. and the 6.4 quake was a precursor to that. there are crews that are on the ground, trying to get help to people who need it. >> all right. will ripley bringing us up to date from his vantage point from hong kong. let's turn to cocaikaren mcginn. she joins us from the weather center. the aftershocks and the structures, not in a state to withstand the tremers.
11:05 pm
this is a concern for so many people. >> it's a concern because a week ago when they saw the 6.4 fore shock, we thought that was a major earthquake. that was just, as will put it, a precursor to the major earthquake. but buildings that were compromised or unstabilized or destabilized from that particular shot, are worried about their homes and the potential for collapse. that's why this picture, of what looks to be a family, or people gathered in the streets, who are trying to sleep, are staying away from their shelters or their homes. they're worried that there could be more collapse. we are seeing aftershocks to the tune of dozens of them. want to point out this particular feature. the earthquake, a primary focus across the island. lots of people go there to trek. indeed, in the fore shock that happened a week ago, there were trekkers.
11:06 pm
it took them days to bring them down. little, by, l lby little. it is an active volcano. we see that the seismic activity has picked up. you look at what happens with the earthquake, as well. 6.9, relatively shallow. moderately shallow earthquake. with 31 kilometers deep. the two earthquakes, the 6.9 and 6.4 were very near each other. that's not unusual. now, we'll see a cluster of aftershocks. something you wouldn't feel but be acutely aware of. we've seen some 4.0 and 5.0 aftershocks that have taken place across this region. people are fearful. they need supplies and the weather is a factor. we have a 10% to 20% chance of showers each day for the next several days. rosemary? >> thank you so much, karen.

we'll talk again, next hour, about this very topic. thank you. u.s. president donald trump is steering the story of the trump tower meeting in another direction. in a sweet sunday, mr. trump admits the june 26th meeting between his son, don jr., and a russian, was in fact to get information at an opponent. at the time, dr. trump was facing off against democratic rival, hillary clinton. he adds he knew nothing about the meeting. mr. trump writes it off as totally legal and something done all the time in politics. laura sanchez lays it all out. >> reporter: in a sunday morning tweet, president trump dismissing reporting by cnn and other outlets, that the president is growing concerned that the russia probe could snare some of his immediate family, including his son,

11:13 pm
so, the legal fineries of this, i can't comment on. >> what do you think of the president and his lawyers changing what was discussed? >> right from the beginning, they come up and explain what happened here, they change their story. >> right. first of all, the president continues to erode any sense of him as an authoritative american. you can't agree with anything he says. which story do you believe? you have a hard time believing any of them. the other point that's really important the is more you change your story, the more you open yourself up for potential charges of perjury, for potential charges of obstruction of justice. the question is, why does the president feel that this time he needs to change the story again? cnn was reporting keently that michael cone is prepared to
