9:06 am
the anecdotes that came out. he said this is a smooth running machine at the white house, but it's belied by what we have seen from the last couple of days. this anonymous op-ed from an administration official has rel set this white house into this parlor game of finger pointing and people saying it's not me, even vice president mike pence said he was willing to take a lie detector test and kellyanne conway, counsellor to the president denouncing the leaker and saying this person was trying to sow chaos. they are continuing to talk about the prospects that president trump wants to out this person. he said attorney general jeff sessions ought to investigate, but still as of yet, there is no indication there was anything to investigate other than aides in this administration continuing to raise doubts and questions about president trump's fitness to lead.

john? >> live at the white house, appreciate that. sharing the reporting and the insights, the associated press and cnn. michael warren with the weekly standard. the drama is just indisbeautable. the question is, you write a great piece about this today. the republican leaders want to keep the government open. they have an election in 57 days. a petting person today would say the probability of losing the house and possibility of losing the senate and the president keeps focussing on this anyway, but the president turning it up. >> he keeps putting it there. it's frustrating if are the republican leaders because despite history against them, they have a good story to tell. they can talk about the economy and lean heavily on the tax plan they passed at the end of last year. even when they get the president
9:08 am
to tweet about that, he overshadows it and he continues to do thatta because he is personally frustrate and we know the president has an inability to put aside his personal feelings not just of the greater good of his party, but his own presidency. the consequences for this president are enormous. he has not grasped that. >> the other thing is the president said one thing in the morning and he said something different hours later. are he said they are not going to shut down a government and he has an interview and he said maybe i will. i was at a breakfast with congress last week and he said i can't tell enough people how bad a shut down will be for the party and the country. you have conflicting -- that's not even are inially something that stays the same throughout the day. >> i would say that what you just described is confirmed what

the woodward book describes is the president and a white house and administration that is pulled in all sorts of different directions. i think the president is going to have a hard time refuting the book in does give interesting insights and specific examples of what we have all reported on. what is actually pretty apparent to the public. the president cares most about the things that affect him directly, whether it's the mueller investigation and whether the press is covering him. what the book does and his response is and that is confirm what we know already. >> to the point that you have this rush of what i call the not me movement in the white house. he has to deny the op-ed writer about the 25th amendment. he has to deny this and listen to him on fox news sunday.
9:10 am
we are 57 days from the mid-term election. the government shut down is right before us. the vice president has been around a long time. he is smart enough to know you can change the question and say that's stupid and let's talk about this instead. he knows about the audience of one. so -- >> should all top officials take a lie detector test and would you take one? >> i would take it in a heart bit and submit to any. >> do you think they would do that? >> that would be a decision for the president. >> i think that pence is concerned about the speculation and the aftermath that he was the one or someone in his universe was involved with writing the op-ed and clearly this is demonstrated with the president's obsession about finding this author. kellyanne conway was on fox and
