wi-fi fast enough for the whole family is simple, easy, awesome. in many cultures, young men would stay with their families until their 40's. this is cnn breaking news. >> so glad to have you with us. an hour earlier than usual here. good morning to you. i'm christy paul. >> in myrtle beach, south carolina. we continue our live special coverage of now tropical storm florence. the storm that beat on and battered north carolina is now coming south. we're see thing stronger sustained winds here, although the rain has died down. this is not primarily a wind event. the problem will be the water,
2:01 am
the rain the storm surge now 900,000 people across the kaur can linaus do not have power, most of them in north carolina, more than 780,000 there. the rest of them here the worst possible five people have now lost their lives sqand they're attributed to this storm in north carolina. we'll check in with them in a moment. we're expecting the latest advisory at the top of this hour. >> we're already see thing rainfall push water up into jacksonville. we talked about new bern all week. they were up to four feet and now -- the river north of jacksonville has risen 20 feet. this is that push up the small little rivers. we talk about two feet, three feet here, the surge, and you
2:02 am
push that up the rivers and it goes higher and higher. up the new river in jacksonville and even into wilmington. but for now the eye or the center is way near myrtle beach. so here are the latest stats for the rest of the day. now the pressure is still fairly low. the pressure was always low and that's the reason this storm has so much punch to it even though it's been on land almost 24 hours. but think about this at least 1/3 of the storm is still over the warm water and this is the surge of water that's still come canning in. see this brighter area, that's the convection that is going to pour right into these places that have flash flood emergencies going on right now. people saying do not leave your home. there's not a safe way out of your home.
2:03 am
just stay there unless you need to go up into your attic because the water is still am cannicomi some spots. we can't get a plane to fly because the weather is so bad. hard to imagine we're still talking about the weather in the same place that's been there for 48 hours. florence is going to turn into not far from columbia in about 18 hours. and so that's what's going to happen. this big swath of rainfall style come in wilmington. you're up about four feet on these gauges here and whereby can't believe that because it's been raining now. i've never seen a person so wet but the water is still rising it still could push up the river. so the rest of the day really doesn't look too bad, especially down towards charleston because
2:04 am
you're on the left side, the bottom side of this eye, or the center. that's where the lightest weather will be. but the surge continues for wilmington, into myrtle. i would say north myrtle gets a surge before myrtle beach does and iltsz t's only about five f from where the ocean to where the beach begins. we could see water in north myrtle. but the forecast doesn't stop. this is into later this afternoon and this evening. things are still going to be in the same places. >> so this wind has picked up recently and it's stronger sustained winds. are we feel thing strongest of the winds we're going to feel in myrtle beach if not, when are we going to feel those winds? >> the storm isn't dying. let's go back to the live ray tar. we'll see them become more
2:05 am
onshore and it's off the ocean. so far myrtle's been off shore and so you've had friction with buildings and trees and mountains by conway. other than that what we have here there's nothing to stop, no friction so i believe six hours from now is when you will see the heaviest winds and they will probably be around 50 miles per hour. >> all right, chad meyers there in the severe weather center and let's stay here in myrtle beach. this is a town right now that's under a curfew. there's another town nearby in conway and the entire ory county area under a curfew. and nick, your c're on the stre and what are you seeing and the reports from the city? >> reporter: they extended it a little further yesterday, last night because they thought hurricane florence was going to hit this wraria hard.
2:06 am
in fact we've been here all week long trying to tell residents how catastrophic this storm could be. it was predicted to potentially make land fall as a category four hurricane. it had turned south, putting myrtle beach in the cross hairs and that got a lot of state officials here in south carolina very nervous about the potential of the wind surge, that life threatening flash flood, storm surge, things like that. today as you see behind me, there's not that much damage on the street. we're still under until about 7:00 a.m. eastern. behind me it's just a ghost town but the worst, as chad mentioned, could still yet be yet to am can. according to local newspaper, there could be spots in this hoary ounty area that by the time this storm is done up 30 inches in rain. we've been reporting during these morning hours throughout
2:07 am
the last several days and this is definitely the strongest we've felt the wind. the rain has been a steady drizzle throughout. we were down in the beach earlier this morning. the waves have been crashing into the beach. but it appears myrtle beach, at least for now has escaped the worst of it. with power outages and damage of course those five people that lost their lives. and here in south carolina they've been dealing with power outages. the emergency management tweeted there were 165,000 people without power. i talk about that curfew and just as we're walking through we spot one of these emergency vehicles to make sure people are staying indoors and that's been the point that the local officials, the mayor here has been trying to make. this is nauta time to get comfortable. yesterday as we're reporting
2:08 am
throughout the day we did see people starting to get stir crazy. the businesses have been closed since tuesday. they thought this storm was going to be at one point the storm of a lifetime. a storm the carolina coast had not seen before. it did make a lot of damage -- it did cause a lot of damage when it made land fall but things look eerily calm at this point. not time to let your guard down. >> we've heard from local officials that this is not the time to come out. the grounds here are saturate would all the rain over the last 24 to 36 hour and more rain to come. these trees could topple over. that's happened in north carolina and he filed this report earlier. >> reporter: the flooding threat will remain for the communities
2:09 am
inland throughout the carolinas, including here in lumberten, north carolina. on friday we witnessed something truly eincredible where neighbors came together to try to protect their community from potential flooding. we saw strangers it filling sand bags, creating a barrier along interstate 95. that location had been identified as a problem spot hurricane matthew swept through the region. that is when water essentially flooded much of the community can, particularly on the west side of this kmurnt. so this time determined not to let that happen. all call issued on social media to create this barrier here. now they're with their families, waiting for the worst to be over in terms of the weather. but the potential flooding

threat will remain. and calling for it to reach major flood stage in the coming days. lumberten, north carolina. >> our thanks for that report and what we esaw in north carolina, that storm, as we sno with the winds building and the rain he says is come canning is on its way to south carolina. unfortunately five people dead and hundreds of thousands of people without power the storm is so big that as we have learned, this will be a multi-day event. the hope is things are not as bad as we saw in north carolina. but even after the winds die down and the rain becomes just a drizzle. all the water in those rivers will move to the south carolina river basins and those communities are now on alert for flooding. >> i heard a meteorologist say those rising rivers are go teeng be watched between monday and

wednesday of this coming week. that shows how long the event is going to be e. 1/3 of the storm is still over the water. we really don't know what to expect friendship. now if you want to help those impacted by hurricane florence, you can give blood, get in touch with charities that there responding and i know that can be hard to desiefer. we have kind of broken down some of the ways you can help there, cnn.com/impact. the white house apparently considered replacing fema chief brock long. he's under investigation for alleged misuse of government vehicles. the journal reports chief of staff john kelly decide to keep him. until inspector general issue as

went completely quiet but the back side of the storm came and we have been in the dirty side quote on quote since then. they started swirling things around this area. we've had roofs that have been blown off buildings, beach erosion. what you would expect from a category 1 hurricane land fall. this was a particularly strong storm when it made its presence felt but it's such a slow mover that we continue to feel the effects. i'm really concerned of the catastrophic flooding to continue as one of these heavy bands similar to what we experienced in hoouson for hurricane harvey last year at this time is stais starting to looking at that radar it's very concerning that slow band will eventually creep towards us here

live in myrtle beach, south carolina. as we continue our coverage of now tropical storm florence and some of the more heart warming stories we've heard over the last several days have been people reaching out to their neighbors but also caring for one another's pets and there have been many people who did not want to leave their pets and geto shelters where those animals would not be wellm can. we have troy snell of the hume an society of the united states. i understand you're in greenville, south carolina. what you do in and offering? >> yes, we are staged right now in greenville, north carolina with staff and personnel that are ready and stanled to go and help anybody that is going to be in need with the weather coming through. >> are you getting reports yet of animals that have been abandoned or stranded?
2:54 am
>> well, so far we have transported out over 400 animals from the virginia coastline. so we've already like -- obviously before the storm hit we got animals out that were going to be in need. i haven't heard of any other sit right now. we're waiting to see what the storm does and tomorrow we're moving to a different location to start helping where it's needed. >> so what do you people who are going to heed these mandatory evacuation orders, what do do with their pets, pack for their pets and how long should they prepare to be away with with those animals? >> well, we always encourage
2:55 am
people to have a disaster plan ready for their pets whether large or small. and finding safe places to evacuate sheltering. we have the website that talks about what you can do, where you can go possibly and it's always good to before the storm hits is too find out from your local agencies where maybe possibly shelters will be set up to take in animals as well. >> all right. troy snell with the humane society of the united states. thank you so much for the work you're doing for spending a few moment said with with us here on "new day." we'll check in with our team of reporters up and down the coast as south carolina starting to feel what hit north carolina but we know our friends in the north are not done with it yet.
2:56 am
>> no doubt about it. we know there are more than 900,000 waking up without power. so we appreciate all the updates and finding out what's going on where you are. it's a very fluid situation and things are changing there. our next video i want to share with you because we've seen so many things that have been hard to take in. there's a wtd reporter. she saw this family struggling to save their pets and help them carry that dog to safety and this is what we have seen from so many people. i actually heard one woman earlier this week say it's not the storm that i'm afraid of because i have faith in our community and this is just part of that. we ehad another woman who had seven dogs. didn't want to leave her home because she didn't know how to transport those dogs.
2:57 am
somebody got her a car and got her and her dog out of the way. i know ethis -- i know that dog is almost saying why are you carrying me like this? but that dog is getting to safety thanks to these people and neighbors coming together for each other and that is the silver lining in all of this. the resiliency of people and their generosity and compassion for each other. no doubt about it, that's a big take away from this. and rescue drews risk thing roads. dianne gallagher was with with some of them earlier. look at this. >> you know situations like this really do illustrate just the kind of danger that these first responders take on when they come aught to do these rescue cans. we were embed would the north carolina national guard.
2:58 am
just with a different paint job. it's called an lmtv and you see that area with the canverse over it, it's empty except for some seats. we were sitting. with with a member of the north carolina national guard. we were on our way to rescue three people who were trapped by flood waters. the neighborhood we were in was extremely flooded. the water was very high and it appears one portion of it the road had washed out in a certain yare juand so the back wheels of the this type of vehicle ran off the side. it caused the vehicle to dip down. we started taking water on in that bake area where we were sitting. the national guard, they train for stuff just like this. they did everything they needed to do. made sure we had floitation devices. but we didn'tent end up needing
2:59 am
that because there was a boat with new bern teenagers and they got us and our news crew out and able to help some of the members of the national guard as well. they ended up getting their vehicle out the three who were going to get resued did get resue canned. we cannot stress the danger some of these first responders are dining on these rescues. i think we take it for granted because they're so successful for the most part. and it's scary for them. almost every first responder has talked about a frighting horror story they've dealt with here in the craven county area because there's so much water and so many rescue cans being done. more than 300 at this point in this just immediate area because of hurricane florence. so everybody is okay. the story is the fact that look know the risk these people are taking when they're come dining
3:00 am
get people in these conditions. the wind is getting stronger than it has the last 24 hours. >> the eye made landfall with a wind speed of about 90 miles per hour. there has been a pummelling, and though the winds might not be as strong as they once were, it is the flooding that is so dangerous this morning. and more than 900,000 people waking up in the carolinas without power. good morning, i'm christi paul. and victor blackwell waking up with us in myrtle beach.
