he hears more about brett kavanaugh and the accusations he did. i wonder how that will affect it. >> a remarkable day and a consequential week. wolf picks up the special coverage right now. have a good day. hello, i'm wolf blitzer and it's 1:00 here in washington. we start with breaking news here in washington. the president, president trump talking about the fbi investigation into allegations against this u.s. supreme court nominee, brett kavanaugh and fighting back against claim that is the fbi is setting the scope. the white house is controlling the investigation and deciding who gets questioned and about what, but just a few moments ago at the wide ranging white house rose garden news consequence, the president spoke about what he specks from the fbi.

>> i want them to do a very comprehensive investigation. whatever that means according to the senators and the republicans and the republican majority. i want them to do that. i want it to be comprehensive. i actually think it's a good thing for judge kavanaugh. it's not a bad thing. i think it's a good thing. with that being said, i would like to to go quickly and the reason is so simple. because it's unfair to him at this point. >> let's go to kaitlan collins who was in the rose garden asking him questions on several subjects on brett kavanaugh, the u.s. supreme court nominee. he didn't answer your specific questions, did he? >> no, he didn't. this was supposed to be a victory lap for the trade agreement between canada and mexico, but it turned into

questions about whether or not brett kavanaugh would be confirmed to the supreme court. he resisted taking questions about brett kavanaugh at first and said he wanted to focus on trade and he did come back to the questions and you heard them about what has been a big concern from democratic senators and they are limiting the investigation into the claims made about brett kavanaugh. that investigation that was requested by key senators. if they don't vote for him, he will not be confirmed. he wanted them to talk about whoever they believe is appropriate, but he didn't say what that means. if he believes they should speak to the third accuser, julie swetnick. he said he wasn't sure if she was a credible enough accuser. when he called on me, he turned to whether or not brett kavanaugh mischaracterized his drinking habits when he testified on capitol hill. that's a concern we heard from several democrats saying we should look into that and brett

kavanaugh's former acquaintances from college days saying he was not truthful about it. here's what president trump said when asked if he thought he should should be disqualified if it is found he mischaracterized his drinking habits. >> if he did lie about his drinking, does that mean you will pull him? >> i don't think he did. i'm just saying, i'm not a drinker. i can honestly say i never had a beer in my life. it's one of my only good traits. i don't drink. whatever they are looking for something, i said i never had alcohol. for whatever reason. can you imagine if i had, what a mess i would be. i would be the world's worst. i never drank, okay? i can tell you, i watched that hearing and watched a man saying that he did have difficulty as a young man with a drink. the one question i didn't ask is how about the last 20 years. have you had difficulty in the last 20 years.

nobody said anything bad about him. they go back to high school. >> president trump said that brett kavanaugh said he did have difficulty with his drinking. you and i watched this together. that is not how he characterized it. he sought to downplay the questions about his drinking, characterizing it as normal and said he has never thrown up from drinking or blacked out or had memory loss from drinking too much. that's why there were questions about whether or not that was truthful. president trump said he made up his mind and when he was asked, if there are more credible allegations are found as they were conducting the investigation, is he open to a plan b here? he said yes, he has an open mind and waiting to see what the result is just like the rest of us. wolf? >> it started off as a lengthy statement on the trade agreement first with mexico and now with canada. it quickly became an extended

q&a with the president in the rose garden involving the confirmation process of judge kavanaugh. i don't know if the president wanted to go down that road, but he took a bunch of questions from you and your colleagues. >> that's right, wolf. initially he would not take the questions on brett kavanaugh. he wanted to stay focus on the trade deal which is big news, but so is brett kavanaugh. that's a big question about whether or not -- this is also about senate republicans and senate majority letter mitch mcconnell in particular. we saw the frustration play out in the president's answers saying he believes bru has been treated unfairly as well as his wife and children throughout this process. he did seem to contradict himself because he said he wants

a full and complete investigation and wants to know whether or not there is validity to the allegations and said it shouldn't take that long and turn into a witch hunt, which is something we heard over the weekend. if this is not a fishing expedition. especially the ones on the committee by saying it needs to be a thorough investigation. that's what this is a lifetime appointment. the highest privilege you can have on the supreme court. they want all of the questions asked and answered. >> a lot of drama at the white house. good job. thank you very much. gloria, first of all, it was stunning to see the q&a that the president went through on the entire kavanaugh nomination. >> it was and i think in a way if you are pro kavanaugh and watching this, you would say uh

oh, the president department help us. he said over and over i want a full interview. if they want to interview kavanaugh, that's fine. then he said he had difficulty with the beer. things that happened when he drank. he didn't do that before the committee. maybe he we are not aware of. he said he wanted to look at everything. if you are pro kavanaugh, you look at the president today and you are like that didn't help us very much. >> same thing. he didn't have to take questions in this announcement. it was all about this trade agreement. he could have just had that statement and walked away and went back to the white house, but he clearly wanted to in some way to talk about trade and he went to talking about brett kavanaugh. i agree with gloria. this opens up an idea of brett

kavanaugh's drinking. he is suggesting he may have had a problem drinking. we know how the president himself feels about drinking because brother had an alcohol problem. if you are brett kavanaugh and watching this, you are probably not happy. how do they unring this bell. the president is open to kavanaugh talking to the fbi. that seemed to be not something they were wanting to do because you get a situation where kavanaugh said certain things to the committee under oath and in public and does he say something differently to the fbi and do the stories match up? >> you covered the supreme court and i'm curious to get your perspective. >> i can tell what you he thought. he would have been winding up lunch on his first day of the term. they opened today with a hole in the bench where his chair would have been. everything had been on track as we know after the first set of hearings and mitch mcconnell

wanted a vote before now. obviously the nominee wanted a vote by now. he could not have been witnessing that news conference without feeling like can i get a good strong show of support from the man who nominated me? but the real crucial element is what's going on behind the scenes. this is all drama and. >>s of what has been an event-filled nomination. we do not know what will be given to the president and senators by the end of the week. he could still be confirmed. it it will just take longer. >> the fbi launched the investigation after friday when they decided after jeff flake and the republican senator from arizona debanded it and the president and supporters didn't have the votes to confirm right away. they said no more than a week, but it could be less than a week. can the fbi and you work with the fbi for a long time, can they do the job in a thorough

way? >> maybe. it depends on the scope. the president said that is so important is the senate essentially is driving the process. so if it's grassley and graham who are setting the parameters of the investigation, that could be done in two days because they only want them to talk to three or four people and be done. if flake and coomb coombs is dr the process, each ends with the person being asked, is there anybody else we should speak to? that's the last question of every even. if names are given and the fbi is given the authority to ask the other people, a week may be too short. if they are not asking that question or given authority to investigate, this will be wrapped up and it's really just then pretext. this is not real and not a true investigation. >> isn't this up to the white

house? the president said it's whatever the senate wants. we know don mcgahn is very involved in this. he could say deal with other than senators and say this is really what we want. don't the instructions always come from the white house to the fbi? >> remember a couple of things. this is mcgahn's legacy and getting this guy confirmed. he has no interest if a broad investigation that may torpedo this nomination. this is why dianne feinstein said give us the written order that defines the terms was investigation. until we see that, we don't know whether this investigation is real or show. >> doesn't he need to please people like jeff flake? >> if he's happy with what comes in, he will vote. he premisesed that and said if he's not happy, he might not. >> i think they presume to be quite honest in talking to

meanwhile, a new claim from a former yale university classmate who said he saw firsthand many years ago what kavanaugh was like in at this time college days. chad ludington told cnn i can unequivocally say i can deny the possibility his blackout. he has not told the truth. that contradict what is he said under oath. >> i drank beer with my friends. almost everyone d. sometimes i had too many beers. sometimes others did. i liked beer. i still like beer. but i did not drink beer to the point of blacking out. >> back with us, did the supreme

about more time. a week might not seem like a lot of time in terms of an fbi investigation, but it's a lot of time in terms of public talking about people coming out and snl doing a spoof on it. the idea that the president now is talking about his drinking in the way that democrats are talking about his drinking, that must be very concerning. we will see what his people come out and say. does he release a statement? does someone else try to tamp down on the question of a person who has a drinking problem. he didn't suggest that in his statement before the senate there, but we are talking about his drinking. >> it's so beyond the supreme court seat. it has to do with his reputation and dignity and so much more is in the air. he made the comment when he testified about do you know how long these 10 days have been. do you know how long this 24

hours has been? that is exactly what this man fears and what republicans fear, but there is a long way between today, monday, and friday when this report presumably handed to the white house and senators. as i said, it's so much more now than the supreme court seat. how does someone who has been at one point had such sterling credentials for 12 years we call the second highest court in the land, the d.c. circuit, either he gets on to the supreme court and this is a cloud on his head or he goes back to the d.c. circuit where it's still a cloud over his head. >> from the legal standpoint, one of the questions is did he drink excessively in college is disqualifying. it has been a long time since college. he may have testified less than forthrightly, but is that material enough to torpedo the

attacking. this was donald trump on twitter. it sounded like a tweet to me. i will attack all the people who would challenge kavanaugh who is my guy. as for the anonymous charge, i don't see how a president levels that. it's kind of stunning, actually or how he knows it. it was astonishing to me that he would level something like that. it was astonishing he would take on the senators, but he feels like cory booker could run against him for president. he is not shy about this. we shouldn't be surprised about anything except for the anonymous one. >> it was like shades of lindsey graham. when he was on the senate judiciary committee reeling against the democrats on thursday, very charged up and yelling at that point. in terms of who he is talking b with these ark none muss claims, who knows. he has done this before.

this is not a president who is good at keeping secrets. i imagine if he had damaging information about a senator, it would be all out there. >> he's done this before, but the one area of his presidency that seemed to be roped off and working as a tradition at republican was the judiciary and the supreme court. initially the president removed from don mcgahn's operation that he was doing with the federalist society had been moving along at a nice clip with a lot of controversy and not the kind that burst on to the screen. very effectively putting many lifetime appointments throughout will be donald trump's greatest legacy. real significance and to see him go out there on something relative to the court is a big

actually do a separate interview with judge kavanaugh? >> they are not going to cover old ground as far as the inkwiry follow-up. they will cover the allegations and elicit as much detail as they can. they are not going to reboil the ocean here. >> i assume if they go do a separate interview, that would be the last thing on their agenda after they interview all the others on their list. they are going to gather as much information as they can from anyone who may have knowledge about the three incidents and get as much detail as they can and as much corroboration or contradiction from records or contemporaneous books or documents they can put their hands on. probably have a final interview with the candidate. >> the president said the white house is not directing this investigation. they are only doing what the

senate is asking for. walk us through the process. how is this sproez supposed to from the fbi perspective. >> the fbi has the mandate to do inquiries for white house nominations for cabinet level positions, judgeships, federal judgeships and may have done thousands of these. they are all done the same way and they are interviewing and record checks. they are not investigations in the sense of the world and they don't use grand juries or under cover operations and all the techniques they used. to distinguish this from a traditional investigation, they call it a special inquiry or a spin. they are done the same way every time. often the originalor which is the white house will ask for a follow-up. he left the sdrugz up to the fbi to know where to go with it.

they will know what needs to be followed up. >> president was asked about all three of the allegations from the three women who came forward leveling the charms against the supreme court nominee. the president said he would be all right with the fbi interviewing all three of the women. listen to this. >> just to be clear, should the fbi interview all three of brett kavanaugh's accusers. >> it wouldn't bother me at all. i don't know all three. i imagine they will interview two. the third one i don't know much about, but it wouldn't bother me at all. i have heard that the third one has -- i have no idea if this is true. has very little credibility. if there is any credibility, interview the third one. i want it to be done quickly because it's unfair to the family and to the judge. it's so unfair to his kids and his wife.

>> so far, only debbie ramirez who was has classmate at yale, only she, we are told so far has been interviewed. will the other two women specifically be interviewed in the next few days? >> i think so. if the fbi is left at its discretion and judgment. this is potentially derogatory information. they will do an interview. there has to be a scoping letter that came to the white house from the fbi so they don't go too far. they are going to focus on the issues at hand which are derogatory information coming in and may have some bearing on the decision maker who is are in this case the congressional or senate committee. >> you think the fbi can complete this over the next few days? >> they have the resources and the experience to do that.

whether or not she left in a fury or agitated and emotional or simply left the party. he could either put a bow on it or say mark judge said i don't recall the event at all. that's not the same as saying it didn't happen. leland is somebody named by brett kavanaugh and his testimony very, very adamantly that she doesn't know me and doesn't recall this incidence ever happening. two occasions that bolster credibility or go along with the same story. not saying it's fabricate and i don't recall this event at all. this is a foregone conclusion that he wants to dot his eyes and cross his ts. >> what do you think? >> i think what the republicans are trying to do is basically do the absolute bare minimum to get the votes they need. this was something that collins, murkowski and flake will go

along with and anyone who wants the truth would look beyond the four people. running down alibis in the way christine blasey ford said she ran into mark judge in a safeway. get the safeway employment records and find out exactly when he was working there. investigate july 1st of 1982. on the evidence presented, that's the most likely date according to brett kavanaugh's calendar for when the party that christine blasey ford described could have occurred. it was a classmate of brett kavanaugh at yale saying he was drinking heavily and the image he presented in this hearing that he had a few beers and that was about it. that's not accurate. he was a very heavy drinker not must in 1982, but the veracity in determining whether he gets an up or down vote. i'm disappointed they are not

doing more. it needs to be a more indepth investigation. >> the republicans are clear they wanted to wrapped up. there was an extraordinary moment when the president levelled a charge against a democratic senator. he said this. let me play the clip. >> you know, i will tell you what. i happen to know some united states senators. one who is on the other side who is pretty aggressive. i have seen that in bad situations. i have seen that person in very, very bad situations. somewhat compromising. you know, i think it's very unfair to bring up things like this. >> somewhat compromising. later he was asked to name that senator and he declined. >> a lot of things with trump, usually when you know you might do it privately behind the scenes, he is publicly saying cut it out and don't go after my

nominee or else. he is publicly threatening a united states senator. he didn't name the senator, but this is behavior that no other president engaged in publicly. i think we can agree on that. >> it was stunning when you heard the president make a charge like this. >> there is no meat behind it. he made a comment that he hasn't provided evidence for. that's what he is criticizing this information about. a witch hunt and a fishing expedition and now he cast a line. he put a green mask on somebody in the senate. one important thing, just last week we heard explosive claims about a third or a fourth person that is not on the list. somebody not brett kavanaugh at yale and somebody who knew him in high school who said he was present at a gang rain or in line for it.

i recall what donald trump himself said about north korea just in january of this year, in his state of the union, where he said, no regime has oppressed its own citizens more totally or brutally than the cruel dictatorship in north korea. and he introduced the parents of otto warmbier, the american student, who was killed in north korea. this is the same regime. it hasn't changed one iota since january. this is the same murderous thug that he was rightly denouncing in february, and now he's in love with -- i mean, literally in love with. this is crazy. i can't imagine any former american president saying anything remotely like this, and if he had, republicans would have gone crazy, and rightly so. this is just so -- i mean, i don't know what to say beyond the fact that it's crazy, deranged, and makes no sense. >> one of the important things that a president needs to do is be realistic and honest about the threats that the united states faces in the world, right? not to overhype them, not to underhype them. but his entire view of threats is based on his personal relationship with the leader. and it's bizarre, to say the
