but technical setbacks. they've been waiting for this day for many year ss and may ha to wait longer. welcome to viewers here in the united states and all around the world. i'm george howell. >> and i'm natalie allen. day afrz jamal khashoggi seemed to vanish in thin air. the saudis now confirm he died after entering the saudi consulate in istanbul october 2nd in what is described as a fist fight with more than one dozen of saudi officials. >> this is after weeks of it nils. now five high ranking officials have been removed from their

post inlecluding the number two man. 18 saudis are being detained in the ace and here is how news broke. >> translator: the investigation showed that primary disugz cans was hoowas inside the consulate in turk ay. was not carried out in a proper way, which led to arguments and hand-to-hand fight with officials and khashoggi which exas exacerbate the condition that led to his tegt. >> and when asked whether he found that credible, u.s. president had this to say. >> i to, i do.

we haven't finished our investigation but i think it's a very important first step and it happened sooner than people thought it would happen. sf >> live in riyadh, saudi arabia for us. and first to you, sam, saudi arabia finally talking about what happened. in their consul there in turkey. what is leadership saying? >> reporter: 1:00 in the morning the state tv ran the statement from the royal court in which it announced first and foremost for the first time that swru mall khashoggi had been kill canned and killed by by saudi suspects inside the consulate. up until that point the official line had been that he left safe and sound but that the saudis were jointly investigating this

disappearance as they characterized it until the hours of the morning. now, they also announced that 18 people had been it taindetainedt of the saudi investigation which they say is based on the information that they'd received from the turks. woo don't bknow yet whether thoe include whom the turkish say flew into istanbul ahead of what we now know to be the death of the washington post columnist on two aircraft on the day that he due swd flew out again. but we may well learn that later on. this is the interesting bit. five very senior members of the administration, including the deputy head of intelligence who's very close to the crown prince and then the crown prince's most senior mediaed a vdser have been received of their positions.

plus a number of other senior intelligence officials. publicly the saudis are admitting that people very close indeed to the man who is on a day to day basis ruling this country, the crown prince, were received of their positions. they've not been detained, not yet being described as suspects but they've been received of their puswrugzs. we don't know yet why they've been received of their positions. a sinnic would say perhaps they didn't know the consul was bugged and a more likely is they're being removed as part of the crown prince's new investigatoratory committee which will be prejieding over the intelligence services. both toads end in a month's time. >> they have not said where is

the body of mr. cushogy. nick. does the saudi narrative hold water? >> reporter: there's a lot of it that's going to be scrutinized very carefully and there are elements that seem tobbeg of belief. the notion that they would say this is regrettable incident belies the fact that family of jamal khashoggi has been waiting to find out for two 1/2 weeks what happened to jamal khashoggi. and still the full extent of that information is not there so this is deeply regrettable. they're still left wondering where the body is. but i think if you try to

examine it from the turkish perspeckive that part of the announcement by saudi officials talked about a cooperation and says saudi arabia sent a delegation of work with turkish authorities on the sixth of october. that's four days after jamal khashoggi's disappearance. and another nine daw business forthey get inside the auconsule and they find much of it has been taken over. that doesn't really speak to the close cooperation that statements are alluding to. trrs the fact they haven't said what's happened to his body after all this time again points to a lack of coop raugz. there's much that doesn't stand up to scrutiny and in part

because in essence they haven't said why these people have bun removed, why they've been detained. it's all up in the air and if you will buried in their statement because they say their investigation will run for another mujt. so there's a a lot about this that beg as belief, not least the timeline here. >> government and intelligence officials who have appearond cnn do not find the explanation plausible. however, the u.s. president has said he finds the saudi's explanation credible. you have to wonder what is going through the white house as it fig wrrs out what is the future of this saudi prince? he's been rule thing world and now it's not look ging for him. what could be next for him? what are the possibilities, nick? >> well, it was intriguing that

president trump actually said this statement from the saudis had come sooner than most people had expected. the statement that came from the saudis initially was that he acheal had left the consulate. and that's the statement that's been standing for well over two weeks. i think most people are staggered it's taken them more than two weeks to, given they believe he died untheir consulate due to this fist fight and that appears to be a close itscription when sitting next to what turkish officials have described is happening. >> the message that emerges at this time is the man who's had pretty much soul charge of the key moves that kingdom makes, the that's the image that's

presented globally is now perhaps more untouchable than other. and he's regarding his most advised officials. he's left in charge of the clean up operation as you will. it's being dressed as a reform but the reality is clear. the saudi state -- and a lot of it is -- in the hands of pour and so been in the kingdom or raids harngsd well, this wasn't right and we don't feel fortable with about how it way events are going to be. is going to be more afraid of raising a critical voice. he was kill canned and we're likely to be able to sweep this

under koorps. and the man whomany believe has responsibility is not going to be touches in all of this. of course maniy feel what's happened is the result of some sort of political scheming between turkey and qatar against saudi arabia. but for those that will examine this carefully, that will be the take away. challenges are going to be even more remote in the future. here in the united states law makers, many of them are not buying into khashoggi's death and republican senator lindsey graham tweeted this.
