the van covered in political decals, images of the president and vice president and one saying cnn sucks. a frequent chant at the president's rallies. sayoc attended one of those rallies in melbourne, florida in 2017 and held up a sign with the same message. he has been active across social media, posting images of himself at trump rallies, attacking many of his alleged targets, even attacking bullia nair investigator billionaire s ooros. other alleged targets, vice president, joe biden and congresswoman, maxine waters and a series of threats directed at cnn, anchors, correspondents and contributors. one of his former employees describe thing disturbing images

on their van. mannequins with their heads cut off. ku klux klan, a black person being hung, torchings, bombings. they say he had an extensive arrest record. including drug possession, grand theft and one in miami in 2002 which he threatened to eblow oputility company worse than september 11th. he was sentenced to a year's probation. now he faces five federal charges, up to 48 years in prison. >> it's cowardly and reprehensible and inathmuto our democracy. >> he'll make his first court appearance monday. ultimately we're learning this case will be brought by the southern district of new york. the same court that have handled many international terror cases.

cnn, washington. the bomb suspect has a criminal history which includes a 2020 arrest by miami police where he threatened to blow up a utility comp an. >> spoke to anderson cooper about that arrest. >> i still recall when i got the phone call he was arrested for threatening florida light and power company. he was working with a laundry matt. hooactual he actually owned it. he got on the phone, begged them to put it on, they wouldn't. started screaming and he blurted out if i load up your office, i'm sure you would turn it on real quick. i can make it like worse than 9/11 and they hung up on him and of course they called the police who came and investigated.

found no indications off bomb making but they charged him with the threat and when it went to court the judge and the prosecutor saw it for what it was. he was someone who was sick. at that time he clearly had no indications of carrying out such tavs. it's now 16 years later. his sickness has obviously worsened over the years and they put him on probation and gave him a break. >> the suspect threatening to blow up a utility in 2002. that was ron who has known cesar sayoc for years. his family inkrnled him to get mental health treatment and hoonever dud. >> he never showed an interest in politics until president trump ran for office. president trump also urged

trying to stop his movement, as he calls it, the most powerful movement in the history of this country. never mind the civil rights movement and other movements in this country. we don't know how this will play with independent voters and others. but take a look at what the president said. >> everyone will benefit if we can end the politics of personal destruction. it we must unify as the nation of peace, love and unharm an. the media has a major role to play whether they want to or not.

and they do indeed. they have a major role to play as far as tone and as far as everything. and we all say this in all sincerity, but the media's constant unfair coverage, deep hostility and negative attacks, you know that, only serve to drive people apart and to undermine healthy debate. for example. we have seen an effort by the media in recent hours to use the sinister actions of one individual to score political points against me and the republican party. >> the president clearly trying

to get the midterm election back. not talking much at all about the suspected serial bomber. going after democrats hard on immigration, accusing them falsely of trying to bring immigrants here to the u.s. to vote in some cases. there's been no evidence of wide-spread voter fraud. it's something he likes to talk about again and again and talking about with increasing frequency going to the midterm elections. a little softer tone in some respects but taking no responsibility for his role in this over heated political climate that certainly led to, at least the arrest of that suspected serial bomber in florida. >> two of the intended targets were former cia director john brennan and former director of national intelligence, james clapper.

good to have you on the show here. the suspect arrested had a van full off pro trump stickers. clearly someone who supported the president. mr. trump taking no responsibility for the tone of his personal attacks but one of the critics who areceived a package in the mail was james clapper. >> i do think though that all politicians are responsible for toning down the rhetoric where possible and first among those politicians is the president off the united states who occupies the most influential bully pu pullpit not only in this country and the world. real a the leadership starts

with the president of the united states. he has to set the tone. >> so this issue of rhetoric is the question. how much will investigators look into the motivation of this suspect as clearly we see the political leanings off his feelings, opinions, very evident on his van? >> well, george, in every investigation law enforcement wants to understand what was the trigger that pushed this particular individual to his radical behavior? and it's clear from all of the intelligence, the open sourced information as we collected and been shared through the media, and mr. sayoc was a disturbed, demented man. he became active in politics in 2016 in the run up to donald trump's election and so when we look at the rhetoric that's been pervasive with this white house over the last nearly two years, it's quite clear that he was moved by many of the comments

about the media being radical, the media being evil. democrats are out there to hurt america so and so forth. it's difficult for them to get at that core root of why he became radicalized and so what they're going to do is talk to his family, look at his associates and you've seen on cnn and other channels, looking at his social media that he's clearly motivated by the hateful rhetoric we're seeing far right of the republican party and that the president of the united states that is likely to push him over the dop. >> we heard him say specifically about the devices that thaw were potentially lethal. thankfully none of those devices exploded. but what do you make of the message this suspect was trueing to send with these devices?

>> this is an act of domestic terrorism fewer and simple. we're thankful those devices did not go off. one thing not often mentioned they were soent sent to president obama, president clinton, various members of the democratic senate and so on and so forth but at any moment any one our u.s. postal workers touching those packages, it could have exploded. so the fact that they did not explode, i'll call that the we got lucky but be clear this was an act of terrorism, those were live devices and it just so happened he happened to be a poor bomb maker and we were able to avoid a national calamity. >> here's a bigger question really. how vigilant do investigators need to be?

is the danger still out there that there could be copy cat incidents or other pages throughout? >> the simp answer is yes. there is no indication we've received from the homeland security or department of just that all of his potential packages have been accounted for. the last 72 hours it seems we're finding more and more packages. i believe the last one was tom stieer, a known democratic supporter. we're still in that period where they're going to be looking at potential other target said he may have mentioned on any one of his social media posts to sooif there are any other targets. and often time when we see these violent incidents you have this copy cat phenomenon. oblamembers of the political establishment need be resolute and on the lookout potentially for people who are trying to

been brokered. a spokesperson wouldn't comment on that reported ceasefire and that's not uncommon. israel has not responded to or ackbaunled any of these cease fewers in the past. since the report of that ceasefire we have seen some black smoke thing distance, perhaps the ceasefire not holding. we' we'll wait and see at this point. happened in the last 30/45 minutes or so. a ceasefire has been reached with israel. and thaw would commit to stand by the ceasefire as long as israel did. islamic jihad fired nearly three dozen rockets or perhaps a few more from gaza into israel. a number were intercepted by israel's iron dome aerial defense system. israeli carried out a series of
