welcome to inside politics. i'm john king. thank you for sharing your day with us. president trump hits the road and brings new meaning to the term campaign stretch. immigration is his top priority. sticking to the facts, not so much. nancy pelosi, should she be so
9:01 am
confident. turnout for this week. it means skip the good economic news and channel the president. >> caravan is coming. some cheering them on. don't be scared beto tells us. >> scacaravans coming yet too liberal to care. who is tough enough to secure our border? >> we begin the hour with the midterm math and new math in to control the senate. it is advantage republicans heading into these final days but perhaps a sliver of hope. if democrats would have any shot of seizing control of the senate they must win seats now in republican hands. seats like tennessee, seats like nevada. seats like arizona. they have to win two or three of those. new polling out here in the
9:02 am
western states. let's start in the state of arizona. first the democratic candidate right now ahead 51-47 here. a four point race now. democrats are ahead. republican though is a little bit closer although talking to republicans the last 24 hours, they are worried about this one. democrats still in the hunt they must win if they have any hope of retaking the senate. that's arizona. now nevada. again, the democrats. it is leading here 48% over the most vulnerable. 48-45. a three point race now. that is what this one has been for quite some time, locked to the end. senator heller believes he will pull this one out. democrats could take a sliver of
9:03 am
hope in the fact they are leading. this is one of the reasons republicans think maybe we pull both of these out in the end. look at the president standing. the approval rating 47%. up 8 points from september. in nevada the president at 49% up 4 points from september. republicans think the president focusing on senate races as he is in these final days. democrats hoping they will hold up on election day. look here in nevada. it is 2018. sounds like 2016. >> dean heller got back in line. >> a liberal and a lock step partisan just like hillary clinton. >> i am a hillary person. >> with me today abby phillips
9:04 am
and david with washington examiner and rachel. i was heading to nevada yesterday and the ads are just off the charts. i said you're either god or satan. i can't figure that out. when you look at these polls ties statistically. you could say slight advantage to the democrats. the republicans are most likely will hold the senate and maybe even gain a seat or two and some think three. is that right? >> i think that's right. i think republicans are a lot to hold the majority. the question is can they gain a couple of seats? that's why arizona and nevada become so important. it is the two areas where democrats have a real chance to flip the seat, oust republicans and hold down their losses. i think north dakota is gone and indiana is on the verge of being gone. the other two seats we are going to look at to see where the
9:05 am
senate shakes out are montana and west virginia. s it is a tough math for democrats. it always has been. if we didn't know it then the kavanaugh hearings helped seal the deal in a lot of states we helped them do well anyway. >> you're right. they think it will leak out. maybe the kavanaugh thing fading a bit. a lot of people, the president knows he is an issue. the president is always an issue. some sort of stay at the white house. this is talking about immigration. look at our poll among likely republican voters. look how much immigration has jumped. in nevada look how much it has jumped. so the president staking essentially his part of his election ton 2016 reflectioxes.
9:06 am
you have nevada and arizona. as you energize the trump base you run the risk of energizing the other side. >> i think he is staking this over his own people which we know is extremely strong. i think that's what numbers really demonstrate when he focuses on an issue he can sway their opinions on this issue. he can push it up to the front of the line. it can make a big difference but to your point, democrats, you know, this is particularly with the birth issue with whether you can become a citizen in the united states if you're born here. things like that start to really stick and it starts to really kind of push over the line from energizing your base to antagonizing your opponents. in some of these border staltes you mind find it has the opposite effect.
9:07 am
you might have diminishing returns. >> what it has always done is divide republicans. you saw sort of the scorekeeper. coming out and saying this whole notion that the president wants to get rid of it, it goes against the constitution. you had paul ryan push back against that and a bunch of republicans say you can't do that. you know, that, he was trying to again, continue the success he has had to things like immigration that help republicans and energized the base and made a lot of these races closer. did he overstep with this? right now they are fighting. >> we'll find out on tuesday. in 37 states people can vote early. some times things happen in the last week. >> all i was going to say is this is the story of this election. what helps in the senate hurts in the house. this is just the way it has been breaking the entire way.
9:08 am
so yeah, this probably helps him a little bit in some of these places but in the house races in florida and california, you know, this is the kind of thing that turns democratic voters on. the one thing i want today say about nevada too, there's a bit of a democratic machine there that he has put in place over the years. they have managed to pull out some elections in the past including his own which he probably should have lost. i think that's a factor heefrre. we have to see how fawell they n get their vote. >> we focused on the president's rally. we focused ton big activity and it's all about mechanics. each says we think we need this many to win. let's find them, text them, grab them by the year. they are focused on that right now. we mentioned immigration. it's the same poll. this is where they are spending
9:09 am
all of their money. it's a big part of their speeches. health care among likely democratic voters. health care jumping up again. it is a motivating force. am i niaive to think they are t litigate issues? if democrats carry these seats will it do health care legislation? >> it will depend a lot on what happens as it always does. everything turns on a dime. i think democrats really found an issue with health care they were surprised it has the residents that it did and that the -- you can see it in the way republicans had to fight back against it.
9:10 am
>> four years after they lost the senate majority and largely because of obamacare. >> it is republicans that are largely on the defensive. yes it is about preexisting defenses. you look at these ads and this thing for them is finally paying off or at least appears like it might really pay off. it is amazing to see how the script has flipped when you look at how damaging the entire health care effort was. >> republicans have clearly already learned the lesson, do not touch preexisting conditions. they have saying they vote today protect people with preexisting conditions. it is 100% false. i covered it and i remember specifically when they put in the language giving insurance companies to opt out of the
9:11 am
requirements. >> speakingov of policy it show you americans now expect preexisting conditions to be covered. whatever else you want to say about the law, and plenty to say positive and negative it is fundamentally changing the politics of health care. >> without a doubt. one more example. we showed you the president's approval rating. another one of these races the democrats still think maybe we can pull out a victory in
9:12 am
tennessee. if republicans can pick up one of those democrats can joe hang on? one of the ways elections in the midterms are about debates. joe in the end trying to stake out ground in the middle. >> bet you never heard this in a political ad. i may not be the candidate for you. if you're part of the extremes in either party, the anger, hyper partisan ship, violence, i'm not that guy. stop demonizing, work with both parties and bring america together. >> you could cast that as an appeal to independence. you could cast it as a hail mary. let me throw this one up and see if it works. >> i spent time over the summer. i think what you're seeing in that is the real him.
9:13 am
you're trying to do everything you can to convince people that they can feel comfortable with you. i think that as mike has become more known i think it was always his biggest challenge. i think the challenges are taking hold the same way they did in 2016 when todd toyoung ended upbeating. >> it helps the fundamental dynamics. i think we should also not forget the thing we haven't been talking about in the last several weeks which is the russia investigation. it always helps president trump when it isn't hanging over his head as much as it was for example in the heat of the summer when there was a lot going on. there were indictments, people pleading guilty, people being found guilty. i think the president benefitted from this last stretch allowing
