13 minutes past the hour. we just heard from president trump who quote has to take a lot of things in consideration. this is in regards to the death of jamal khashoggi. this as we're learning this morning the cia learned the crown prince mohammed bin salman personally ordered the death of jamal khashoggi. >> president trump says he has not yet been briefed on this cia assessment but he had been briefed a couple of weeks ago and says he has a lot more to think about. >> looks like several pieces of evidence, several sources to look at so only now are we hearing that the cia has reached the conclusion that the saudi crown prince mohammed bin salman was behind the murder of journalist jamal khashoggi, that
5:15 am
he in fact ordered it, this is what intelligence sources have suspected for a long time just because of his involvement in matters of this country. it seemed impossible he would not know about this or be involved. but what the president said today pretty closely echoed what we heard before. he said he denies he was involved. this would be a rogue element. >> you know we also have a great ally in saudi arabia. they give us a lot of jobs, a lot of economic development. they are they have been a truly spectacular ally in terms of jobs and economic development and i take that -- i'm president. i have to take a lot of things into consideration. so we will be talking with the cia later and lots of others. i'll be doing that while i'm on the plane.

thursday is thanksgiving. it's a holiday the president said sometimes used as an opportunity to visit with and thank american troops fighting overseas. >> let's see if we got anybody more senior that can read the president's thanksgiving speech. is there anybody back there that's more senior than us? >> that was president george w. bush making a surprise thanksgiving day visit to iraq in 2003. president clinton travelled to kosovo in 1999.
5:23 am
president h.w. bush went to have thanksgiving dinner in saudi arabia in 1990s. again these are off an surprise. see it's not out of the ordinary that the white house has not publicly announced whether president trump will make one of those unexpected visits. however some are frankly disappointed that president trump has not yet visited american service members in a combat zone, not just on a holiday but at all. he's been in office 666 days now. let's geback to president obama's administration. president obama first visited camp victory in baghdad 77 days into his administration. afghanistan on day 342 and president george w bush he didn't go to afghanistan until 216. -- 2006.
5:24 am
vice president mike pence, he made a surprise visit to troopess in afghanistan just before christmas. jared kushner went to iraq. when president trump was asked why he had not visited trooped in a combat zone. quote i will do that at some point but i don't think it's overly necessary. i've been very busy with everything that's taking place here. the president has visited troops in south korea and elsewhere last year but over the last nearly two years, he did not visit u.s. combat troops, even when he was nearby. his first official trip was a to saudi arabia. there were more than 5,000 active duty troops in iraq, afghanistan and qatar. president trump didn't visit any of them. the president went on to israel.
5:25 am
there were 1700 or so troops in jordan, many fighting in syria. every president is busy. there's always work to do at the white house but former defense secretary says these vists are necessary. >> i think rilts bigger than just a misstep. i think it's a failure of an obligation, a basic obligation off a commander and chief. he's commander and chief of our forces and not to go to a war zone where we have men and women dying, that's just wrong. >> maybe the president will surprise troops overseas by thanking them in person but if this thanksgiving is like the last one, he'll thank them but he'll do it it from mar-a-lag oshs. >> we're being talked about again as an armed forces. we're really winning. we know how to win. but you have to let you win. they weren't letting you win

5:27 am
president trump is a big supporter of our troops. i'd say what they really want is more readiness and the funding to do their jobs for america. >> all right. overly necessary. >> while i agree with rebecca they want to make sure they're investing in our readiness and they don't wake up everybody wondering if the president is going to visit, his fail dwroor do so sends a terrible message about his commitment as earlier report in the segment, not once has he visited soldiers, airman or marine in a cambat zone. he failed to viz at symbolically important site, the american cemetery in france. didn't go to arlington national cemetery. no matter how busy a president is, part of being busy is showing our support to military

administering the post 9/11 gi educational benefits. one of the largest we've seen during the administration of this program where there are reports that veterans relying on these benefits are facing homelessness because their housing allowance is not coming through. youv got president who talks a lot about supporting veterans and military members but when it comes to executing, he's failing. the chief administration officer is vacant. they're operating on a legacy it program. there's been missteps with hiring leadership and there are still 45,000 vacancies that congressman has provided appropriations to fell. and veterans are suffering because of that. >> rebecca, let's talk about this deployment to the border. the southern border. thousands of u.s. troops.
5:31 am
we saw defense secretary james mattis go there and he says long term what their mission is somewhat to be determined. but this is what a senior administration official told our jake tapper. it's a joke of limited opportunity and a waste of our time. mattis knows it, kelly knows it but he was hell bent on troops. is this waste of time? he called it an invasion and adamant about these people coming into the country up until the election. assent said as much about it since. is it a waste of time? >> no. i think it's perfectly approp reet for our troops under northern command to be deployed to our boarder to support the border patrol activities. i don't have a problem with our troops deployed and let's
5:32 am
remember both president bush and president obama deployed troops to that boarder and we've had troops there since the spring on another operation. i'm sure they'd rather be home with their families. but i'm fine having troops on our southern border. >> drirts moralizing. look, i had concerns of the national guard to the border. er for that's one issue. but active duty soldiers to the boarder. 7,000 active duty and national guard. that's more than the number of service members in iraq and syria combined. half the number in afghanistan. those are real threats. secretary mattis, i think he must have been embarrassed when he asked about their mission. they're laying wire in texas when the migration looks like it's moving towards san diego and california. service men and women i deploy during the haul days.
5:33 am
i missed many special family occasions and we don't mind doing that when the mission is real. this is dubious at best. quite frankly i know the president is going to california. he ought to bring some of those troops to california. they'd be more useful supporting the rescue, the search and the fire suppression efforts in california than shoveling manure on the southwest border in support of the custom and boarder patrol. >> thank you so much for being with us. congressman, i want to keep you for another question or two. saying he likes nancy pelosi and thinks he can get votes for her for speaker. will you vote for nancy pelosi to get the gavel? >> yeah, ium supporting nancy pelosi. we need our best generals on the field if we're going to pass meaningful legislation.
5:34 am
year an article 1 institution. we're the congress. we don't need the president's help while we would welcome republican support of nancy pelosi for speaker, we're going to be able to leect nancy pelosi speaker with democratic votes alone i think. nancy's going to be the next speaker. and my good friend, jim is going to be the majority whip. that will be our trim have the at the top. the most diverse congress we've seen in the history of this country. so i'm looking forward to the 116 116th congress to get lenl slagz done on health care and theconomy. >> you sound confident in pelosi's ability to get the votes. are there more than a dozen democrats who say they won't vote for her. >> there's an overwhelming
5:35 am
majority of democrats in our caucus that will vote for her. you have to understand you're either voting for the democratic nominee or the republican nominee and quite frankly i'd like the see the democrat in our caucus who's going to vote to hand the gavel to lead that chamber to the republican minority who for two years has been unable to pass meaningful legislation. >> i know you're optimistic about nancy pelosi's ability to get the votes from democrats alone. but considering your support for her, would you be comfortable with republicans crossing over at the president's ur surging t support nancy pelosi as the next speaker? >> again i don't think it will take republican support to elect her. however, if republicans are willing to vote for nancy pelosi for speaker, that would be strong bipartisan support and
5:36 am
that's the kind of bipartisanship we do need in the 116th congress. >> the question is what she would have to negotiate to get the votes. congressman anthony brown of maryland, thanks so much for being with me. well, president trump says he'll be submitting his answers on the russian probe to special counsel robert mueller next week. and just more than 24 hours to go. thousands of votes to count by hand. who's going to be florida's next senator? we're take engyou thrive florida. i switched to sprint because they have a great network and i knew i'd save a ton of money. sprint's nationwide lte advanced network is now up to 2x faster than when i switched. and their total lte coverage is 30% larger. that's big news!! don't forget unlimited. sprint's unlimited can save you nearly $1000 in the first year over verizon and at&t. just think what you can do with all that extra money. 5:44 am
>> you mentioned former attorney general, loretta lynch. and we know james comey. is there an expectation that they are going to give anything to house republicans that the president has wanted them to give regarding the clinton email scandal? >> i don't think so and i think that's why james comey is now saying he wants this public. let's see exactly what the political strategy in the games are. the parling games being played. he's kind of calling them out on it. i don't think that's going to happen and it's anybody's game in january when democrats take power. the republicans are trying a little bit off a ploy here. >> so, page, give me a timeline here. when do you anticipate, based on what we know, the mueller report will come out?
5:45 am
>> at this point it's complete speculation. obviously the special counsel's office wants to get these questions answered. and those answers may encourage additional work in the investigation. i mean we have no idea, number one, what the questions are, much less what the answers are. the special counsel's office will review them. if thafbl ey've said we're not answering question five or seven or eight, yes, you are. that process can take months. >> can they force him to answer the question? >> ultimately, no. if the president says i'm not going to participate, i've given you what i thing is reasonable and that's it, then he does not have to provide any additional answers. then the ball goes back to the special counsel's office. do we want to proceed with a subpoena? and if we do, does the president challenge it? i don't think either side wants
5:46 am
to go down that road because of the legal implications. >> the president did say there were questions he did not like and questions he didn't answer. can this investigation be legitimate without everything answered from the president? >> probably not, christy shs and i think that's the point of it. he thinks and his lawyers think they're trying to set him up. and they're watching for those questions and i think ticket why he's huddled with his lawyers much off the week to figure out how these questions are going, how they're playing out and if they are trying to trap him. his lawyers have been hesitant from day one to put him out there. this is why he's submitting these questions in writing. so anything else, they're a little freaked out that he could go unhinged if he is to answer the way he would want to answer.
5:47 am
>> could there be a perjury trap there? >> not in this case. you heard the talk about they may ask if it's raining or a nice day. perjury is giving intentionally false information on a material fact. so if he wants to commit purnlry, he can do it butted it's not going to be a trap simply by answering the questions. the machines couldn't get done and now thousands of votes in florida are being counted by hand. of capital? what's critical thinking like? a basketball costs $14. what's team spirit worth?
